I have been a loyal Apple user for over a decade, having recently sold my iPhone 15 Pro. I've recently purchased the Samsung S24 Ultra and am quite pleased with its performance. This phone is more versatile than the iPhone, offering more functionality.

I went from the pixel 8 pro to the s24 ultra. I was always about vanilla android, but not anymore. Pixels hardware is way too lackluster. Google keeps trying to cheap out on the storage speeds, modem, biometrics, and battery life.

My best Samsung vs Pixel comparison is "how many taps does it take to call someone from the 'recents' list?" That comparison seems to play out through the rest of the software as well.

Not a single reviewer talks about how bad the modem is in the Pixel 8 Pro, I returned it as it was a deal breaker for me. But I was glad to hear him mention this and show it in real life. I've been at home with family all of us on Verizon and I could barely send a text, while they have great signals. I got tired of it 10 into the 14 day return window and took it back. It was weak everywhere I went.

Samsung is responsible for all the hardware and Google is responsible for making sure the software is perfectly optimize to maximize the hardware to it's fullest capabilities. Have you tried a Galaxy lately? What is the killer feature on Pixel for you right now? I was a hardcore pixel fan but now Samsung is far more customizable, runs much smoother, and generally feels like there are no compromises. Pixels, especially since they switched to this garbage tensor processor, feel like a budget phone dressed up with software gimmicks that try and make you for get the laggy interface and missing features.

An interesting and relatively rare comparison. As a non-flagship user of Pixel phones (3a and now 6a) and as a fairly serious photographer (Olympus OM5 Mk 2, ACDSee, studio lighting, etc.), I feel compelled to put in my 2 cents worth.
I like the Pixel 'Eco system' including the Pixel Watch 2. I looked at Samsung, since I had just retired a Galaxy S3 Frontier. Fitbit software is very much ahead of Samsung Health. It can scan barcodes, to track what I eat, and automates nutrient conversions (say, from grams to ounces). As a diabetic, the greater accuracy Fitbit offers is particularly important to me. S-Health is fine for casual tracking, and I used it for 7 plus years successfully.
I literally just came from the gym. Both for the watch and phones, heart rate, calorie burn, and step counting matches the LifeFitness gear the gym uses within2-5 points, and that's close enough for me.
True, Samsung offers Dex, which I think is cool. But I wouldn't use it with a phone, maybe with a tablet, but the phone? Not likely for me. I'm less impressed with Google's tablet offerings at the moment, but I do live in hope. Like you, I hate the duplicative, ugly, and lesser quality of the Samsung Apps.
Now, to the Camera(s). A fairly serious photographer cares less about vibrancy 'punch' than he or she cares about dynamic range. Vibrancy can be added by editing, but you can't add the details found in the shadows and highlights that the camera doesn't catch. You can fake it a bit through editing, but you can't replace it. That is why sometimes a Pixel produced photo will seem a little 'dull' to some. It has captured more dynamic range so the photographer can control the edited output a bit better.
Both can produce fine photos for the casual photographer; and I use my 6a as a camera of convenience. However, I really appreciate the output of my 6a for its ability to go farther in terms of producing quality output via editing.
On the whole, I don't think you can go wrong with either system. But a little self knowledge of what you want and need from your communications gear will go a long way towards keeping you happy with your purchase.

  • @Jo5ue1

One of the main reasons I prefer the Pixel 8 Pro is its simplicity. The Pixel 8 Pro runs a clean version of Android, free from bloatware and unnecessary customization options. This makes the phone feel fast, fluid, and easy to use. The S24 Ultra, on the other hand, has a lot of Samsung's own software on top of Android, which can sometimes feel cluttered and overwhelming.
Both phones have great cameras, but I think the Pixel 8 Pro takes more natural-looking photos with better color accuracy. The S24 Ultra's photos can sometimes be oversaturated and overprocessed. The Pixel 8 Pro also has excellent low-light photography, thanks to Google's computational photography magic.
Plus the P8P is always $200 dollars off. That's an easy decision for me.

The only complaint that have about this review as well as many others is the fact that they characterize bloatware as some permanent fault that should be considered when purchasing a mobile phone. You can literally delete most of the consumer facing applications from most phones very easily, so I believe that having bloatware really shouldn't be a factor. " Oh no I don't want Microsoft Apps on my phone, what should I do?" Well uh, press and hold the application, then choose uninstall, duh. It takes literally seconds. The only caveat would be the primary apps like camera, photos, contacts, phone, and messaging. Those apps shouldn't even be considered bloatware because they are homogeneous to the platform owner.

@glenbarrington2634 Let's be honest here. A majority of people who watch tech reviews are the hobbyist and enthusiast. Normies aren't watching UA-cam to help them shop. They just pick up the newest model they can afford based on personal preference or FOMO.

One major question: which one overheats more? I've had a Pixel and it gets hot very easily but I've heard Samsung's Exynos chip does the same. I'd go to Samsung tomorrow if it solved the overheating problem that seems to plague the Pixel line. I am so happy that you are discussing and comparing the issue of mobile connectivity and the effect on battery life of the Pixel (and vs. Samsung ) Thank you for being honest with consumers so they know beforehand and can decide based on their own usage situations. Why does nobody else properly cover these issues on phones. It doesn't matter how great a phone is if you cannot get and keep a decent signal and your battery life is not adequate on cellular data. I love Pixel phones!!! However my problem is I am not on wifi all the time and in a smaller town in the US that doesn't always have the best signal and it's killing the Pixel experience 😢. I think I am going to have to use another phone as my daily driver until Google starts producing better custom chips with TSMC (and better modem hopefully) and try another Pixel in 2025 or 2026. HOW DOES SAMSUNG S24 ULTRA COMPARE IN THIS REGARD TO THE ONEPLUS 12? I AM ON AT&T CELLULAR SERVICE. PLEASE ADVISE AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO COMPARISON ❤.

Audio quality is just average to meh on small flagship smartphones. It's just physics. Smaller than ever earpiece speakers and a thin and lightweight build aren't conducive to balanced sound creation. It's actually much better than the s22 (and probably s23-didnt own that one). Worse than older phones like the s10 which has much bigger earpiece speakers. There's always a trade off. Playing with the EQ and downloading third party app 'wavelet' helped. The 8 pro has good speakers (less balanced/detailed than some like the iPhone 15 pro max/s23 ultra but surprisingly excellent base). The pixel 8 didn't compare favorably to the s24 base so I don't think it's going to be what you're looking for.

Nice review, but pointing out a couple of things that aren't factually correct -
    1. The s23 ultra did not have stainless stell, the frame is aluminium, that's why the switch to Titanium doesn't reduce the weight of the 24, aluminum was already quite light.
    2. The back of the phone is gorilla glass victus 2, and not gorilla armour, like the display on the front.

The S20 Ultra was stainless and they switched back to aluminum on the S21. I had the S20 and it was fantastic and the most durable phone I've ever had. I carried it without a case and dropped it plenty of times onto concrete and it looked brand new. I've since switched to using a grip and if I had put one on the S20 so I wouldn't drop it on my face in bed I would probably still have it.

I mostly love my Pixel 8 Pro as I did the 7 Pro. The 8 Pro is a decent upgrade from last years phone and a more worthy competitor to the S24U than the 7 Pro was to the S23U. Now if the Pixel 9 Pro leaks pan out, I think that camera bar design change and flat sides especially if it's all matted and not shiny like on the 8 Pro, it will go a long way in my book to make it look more sophisticated looking on the exterior anyway. I just hope the Tensor G4 is a noticeable upgrade over the G3. I don't have any major complaints but software wise, One UI looks more polished in this video just navigating through the OS than Android on a Pixel. Don't get me wrong, the 8 Pro is very smooth but performing tasks in One UI just looks more surefooted for lack of a better term, in that sense more iOS like which is how I hope Google would optimize Android for Pixels.

TouchWiz, OneUI and many other skins are why I prefer PixelUI/stock Android. I just like minimalism when it comes to my devices regardless of it being Android or iOS. DeX and GoodLock are cool and I wish Google would develop their own variant of it but otherwise I still prefer a Pixel over a Galaxy. I have used every Galaxy since the S3 but I haven’t purchased one since the S3. When I bought the Pixel 4a it was almost enough for me to want to leave iOS altogether. I’ll continue buying Pixels over Galaxy phones unless Samsung drops OneUI.

@@AziaVenom I know how far Samsung has come, I just don’t care for them anymore. OneUI is better than TouchWiz but I still don’t like either one. I have been following tech news about Samsung and many others for years and though Samsung has been killing it feature wise doesn’t mean much to me if they still have bloatware and other things that I hated about them like always having to wait for updates because of them having to implement their “fixes” on top of what Google has already added.
I know Galaxy was before Pixel and I regretted getting one over a Nexus. I can’t tell who is worse nowadays Apple fanboys or Samsung fanboys. Not everyone is going to like or agree with you on things and that’s okay but I must be smoking something strong because I don’t see the hype behind Samsung or any company for that matter 🤷🏾‍♂️

I love love love Pixel, but the removal of customization since A11 has really made me consider leaving. I miss icon shapes, vibrant colors, notification shapes, icon packs... etc. I also wish there were more options for lock screen/always on. I just went back to the original A12 clock because the ones added in 14 are not that good.
Going to get the P9Pro most likely, and if customization options aren't added and colors stay the ugly pastels I might consider switching back to Samsung, or maybe someone like OnePlus or Nothing. Sad Google has iPhonified their software so much.

Without a doubt the ultra is the better phone that’s not the point but is it worth the extra money is really the question. I bought the regular eight this time around, but I won’t do that again because it seems like Google is holding back some of the AI features only for the pro model. Really good job on the comparison and I personally would never buy the ultra cause I wouldn’t use the S pen but it’s definitely a nice phone.

I didn't realize there was still so much pro pixel bias in the community. If you ignore the opinions and just listen to the observations it is obvious that the Pixel has serious problems for a premium flagship. The last big Android feature drop came to Samsung FIRST and most of the Pixel advantages come to any phone via Google One. Pixel has NEVER been very customizable and now that OneUI is really great it is hard to find usability advantages on the Pixel. The Pixel's AI features are objectively SLOWER than on Galaxy and the modem, battery life, and overall processing power have always been generations behind with tensor and it hasn't gotten much better. Samsung makes hardware look as easy as Google makes it look hard.
Having been a "pure android" fan and owner of many nexus and pixel phones, from the S10 forward every time I've switched to pixel it has been a clear downgrade and it will be a while before I go back.

correct and errors and spelling uk english please i was daily driving the s23 ultra and Pixel 8 pro for a few months. My conclusion was the Pixel had the better camera, but worse video, i found the pixel 8 battery just average, display was great, but i missed the .1of an inch, because it felt a lot narrower, i love the editing features they are pure magic, but once i got back from my holiday where the camera was my main focus the pixel hardly got a look in, i went back to the s23 ultra, then sold the pixel which was hard work and then traded the s23 ultra in for the s24 ultra, so the s24 ultra cost nothing. I had to switch from the Gboard to Samsuung keyboard due to the A.I features and it took probably a day to get used to it but zero issues, the camera is more flexible and they have fixed the green colour issue which annoyed me. the when had a lot of folks complain about not being as vivid, but i actually preferred it, I am used to working with a more colour accurate displays so I am used to the more muted colours, one of the other big things that I didnt pay much attention to was the anti-reflective coating but i actually now love it, the screen is excellent, battery life is amazing, Oh and one thing I forgot to mention WTF is google doing releasing a phone with 128GB in 2023!!! I swapped my 8 pro to an s24 ultra as the launch deals were pretty generous. Overall I am happy with the swap as its a better all round phone, especially for media consumption. The screen and speakers are awesome for watching content. Battery life is also better. I use the 80% battery saver mode on my ultra and get roughy same bettery life as my pixel charged to 100%. My biggest reason for changing was performance. The pixel lags and stutters through so many 3rd party apps. Unfortunately the pixel camera is just leagues better. They are pretty even in good lighting but the samsung is genuinely terrible in low light. Its like a midranger. Really noisy with unnatural colour profile and poor detail. Wish they had upgraded the sensor though i suspect its probably just rubbish tuning from samsung.

Pixel 8 pro has been found around $800 (normally $1000) since release. The S24U is $1300. Depends on what you define as lesser. The pixel has stock android and a great camera at that price point. If we were talking PC specs I'd agree but the fact is that the G3 performs fine too. Pixel and Galaxy are the only 2 viable options for me since they have the longest software support they will have the best resell value. OnePlus and Nothing are contenders but I'd still pick sam or pixel.

There are little things that Samsung does, which very few (if any) reviewers mention and they are noticeable as a Pixel user:
    1) The lockscreen. On a Pixel, if you're using what is now called Extend Unlock you can simply tap on a notification and get taken directly to the app. This DOES NOT happen in Samsung devices. Instead, you tap on the notification, then are forced to swipe up before getting to the app. This SEEMS like a small deal, but it's VERY cumbersome in the real world when you're used to the Pixel way of doing it. It was so annoying for me on my last 3 Samsung devices that I just turned Extend Unlock of and put in my fingerprint each time. At least that way I could avoid the darn swipe up.
    2) NO PHONE TAKES CLEAN SHOTS (especially up close) LIKE THE PIXEL. Sorry to yell, but it's very noticable. This actually includes the current iPhone. As a Pixel user, you KNOW almost every shot will be clean. Google's software makes sure of it. No other phone does this for you. Time and time again I see blurry shots from various phones shared in my chats. They're ALWAYS Samsung and iPhone shots. Whenever I see a crazy clean photo, I almost always find out they came from a Pixel. Again, this is especially true with close up shots. The Pixel just gets it right.
    3) Samsung shutter/processing lag. I hear this is fixed in the s24U. Anyone care to comment? Reviewers have just been ignoring and making excuses for this issue as long as I can remember. It's truly nuts.
Now, to be honest, the Pixel camera app (in my opinion) is the best overall, but the Tensor chip isn't it. Seriously. Google needs to switch it up because there are times when it lags. The iPhone camera app is very solid and doesn't have any shutter lag. Apple kills this, even if the shots fall behind the Pixel's.

    • @stevanb.2590
      @stevanb.2590 3 місяці тому

Shutter/processing lag (and motion blur following it) are the same like on any other Samsung flagship from previous years. Don't believe what "honest" youtubers say, every year it's "shutter lag is almost gone/non existant" and every year Samsung flagship just can't take clear and usable pic of subject with even slight movement. People, kids, pets... especially indoors (even with great light), pictures end up blurry and unusable. If it was any better this year, 95% of reviews would mention it at least twenty times in all these videos, phone/camera comparissons

Apple doesn't have to send a link, unlike Android. & Before anyone says, "Only the US uses imessage" well, I'm in the US. I also have the orange S24 Ultra, Z Fold 4, Tab S9 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. So why can't I just send a quality photo or video from Android user to another Android user? I can easily do quick sharing from my phones or tablet but what about another Android user that's not close to me where I can quick share it?

Not sure why you are having that issue. Maybe you don't have RCS enabled?

@@blueciffer1653 rcs is enabled on both phones and I'm using Google messages. It gives me the warning ⚠️ video will be trimmed and the video maybe only 15 seconds

@@eciv2006 I've not noticed this issue. And I'm fairly certain the videos are longer than 5 seconds. Something isn't right.

Clean, vanilla, stock android is overrated. Android skins from samsung offers quite some amazing features.
