- The 12th Annual Windless Kite Festival, January 18, 19, and 20 2013. AKA Open Individual Indoor Unlimited competition with Spencer Watson. Thank you to The World Kite Museum for putting on this event.

Roughly 20 competitors, a dozen or so recreational fliers and a few hundred spectators attended the 2013 Windless Kite Festival in Long Beach WA during January of this year… During the event, MTP Studios (Matt Cyphert and friends) were on hand to film the event and went on to post those videos on UA-cam on January 26th.
Just a couple days later, Spence Watson posted a link to his Windless routine on Reddit where it gained over 2600 “up votes” and over 900 comments… From there, things have gone crazy viral.
As of today and as far as we can tell, the video has now drawn more recorded views than any other UA-cam kite video in history with a truly mind-blowing 1,002,498 views (yes - over a million) after a mere 73 days online!
Needless to say, the exposure for kiting is fantastic - probably one of the largest possible media outreaches we’ve seen.
I think this reinforces a valuable lesson about simple promotion using social media… A video on UA-cam, a single post on Reddit, and people ran with it - even bringing the video to the attention of news sources that have republished the video on various TV shows and websites… Very little work actually applied, just a lot of passion and some key placement.
Many of our readers have seen this video before, but it’s such a noteworthy accomplishment that I wanted to be sure we documented it somewhere in the magazine as a standalone item for easy reference.
Go fly, go film, tell the world!

Dang I will honestly say that was the coolest kite thing I've ever watched.
I never realised this was a thing... Nor would I have deemed it possible. Amazing what skills and manually created airflows can do to, an otherwise, lifeless kite. Simply incredible.
I thought I'd only watch the first 20 or 30 seconds -- just to see what indoor kiting was. Ended up watching the whole thing because of the complete dedication and sincerity this guy has for his craft.
"Why yes, I am flying a kite indoors synched to an orchestral version of Paint it Black."
How did I not know this existed! That was awesome!!
Wow that was really awesome!! The way he moved the kite made it look alive plus the epic soundtrack paint it black :)
brought a tear to my eye! great flying and awesome music
OMG...best indoor Rev. Ballet, I ever seen by now !
Easily the best indoor kite flying video I have ever seen.
You are an artistic pilot :-)
Thank's for the show!
this is awesome !
so much hard work, time, dedication ! i hope you won
i did not know that existed, have no idea how hard it is to do what you have done there, but it's awesome!
This is one of the most inspirational videos I have seen, striving to surpass Spencer is my motivation this year. Scratch all my previous new years resolutions as I now have one and that is to use my currently being delivered kite to beat nay destroy Mr Watson in the sport he has made self-conscious discomfit to the performance I will deliver.
I must say, I've never heard of anything like this, but this was spectacular! Very impressive :)
How cool! I had no idea what to expect. This is actually quite impressive!
I loved the instrumental version of "Paint it Black," and awesome job with the kite!
Very Nice!
Your timing is really good. I like the touches to the floor on the creschendos.
I've flown quad line, outdoor kites, they're challenging enough with wind, I can imagine the practice it take to go windless.
I didn't even know such competitions existed, but the whole 4 minutes I was completely breathless. MAD SKILLZ YOU GOT THERE.
The thing that takes the performance to the next level is the amazing musical piece.
Nailed it. Never seen a kite flying indoors but you deserved your 1st place for sure!!
Thank you!
The most amazing video i've seen in a while. A wonderful ballet.
I didn't even know kites still existed, let alone had cool events like this. Awesome routine.
Awesome Job, Spence!!! Keep rockin' it, mister!
Great job Napoleon. Pedro is crying tears of happiness.
Great job Spence!!! Theresa looks so proud! Its adorable!!!
I never realized Apocolyptica did a cover. Thank you very much :)
This is the last video I thought I would see a Starcraft reference. Well done!
Most excellent! I'll have to watch one of these events if they come around to my part of the country as this video was A LOT of fun to watch.
Awesome! It's amazing what people can do when they put their dedication into it.
thanks for coming out. i know your parents might not understand but good for you.
"Whatever you are, be a good one"...Awesome show, never knew this existed.
Bwaaaaa! AWESOME!!! I have never seen a competition like this and I would love to learn how to do it.
Glad you know him personally, however I doubt he would appreciate you sharing this with us.
That's pretty sweet. I can't fly a kite on a windy day, let alone indoors! Good job.
I never realized that my cousin was so awesome. I didn't see this when it came out initially. Making a kite fly without wind is pretty cool. :P
this made me cry... tears of joy
Beautiful. Thank you for posting.
I've always wanted to get into indoor kite, I used to do indoor and outdoor guard along with tons of ballet so I'd probably enjoy it. You however, are incredible at it, don't ever stop flying.
this is badass, and i have no idea whats going on. this kid put a lot of time and effort into this and he is very talented
That was so totally awesome!!!
Must admit, that was pretty cool. Great job, mate
I didn't know this existed.. Well done.
That's awesome! I didn't know this even existed!
the cargo pants was really the cherry on top
Very talented, thanks for the video.
Stunning and technical. Love it.
Really graceful! That was pretty cool.
Excellent job, Spencer.
4 minutes of my life I will never get back.
This was strangely fascinating to watch.
He's so talented. I think he's ready for the big stage.
Okay... wait... WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS?!? That was stunning. Very few people in this world can translate music into motion, and this guy is one. Wicked song choice too, I think I like it better than the original.
yes, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The album is called Classic Rock
This is kinda awesome! Well done dude!
He did a great job. I enjoyed the video.
I found this completely hilarious for some reason.
That was sick actually... nice work
That was incredible! I've always thought windless kites were awesome.
dude this is amazing no joke :D
Outstanding!!!!!
For all of those looking for the song it is by Apocalyptica - "paint it black".
Originally a Rolling Stones song with the same title.
Never thought I'd hear Paint It Black in an indoor kite flying competition, then again, I never thought I'd be watching an indoor kite flying competition.
This would be AWESOME to see in WGI!
Thoroughly impressed
If a man enjoys what he does well, then who am I to judge? Awesome job man!!
I listen to AC/DC while I watch this. Gets me SO PUMPED UP!
Totally awesome! Who knew??
That looks amazing
I just want to point out that dislike does not mean do not like. In other words, if you are indifferent to this video, you do not dislike it. You merely do not like it. Dislike means to detest whereas do not like does not imply any amount of loathing.
I didn't even know this was a thing. Pretty cool!
I know the music in the background is "Paint it black", but what version is it? Where can I get it?
Wow! For everyone who has something negative to say, go do that better than he did then! Good for you Spencer! That was amazing!!
The magical wonders of a boy and his kite.
What song is that at 1:12. Ive heard it somewhere before
There's no worse feeling than showing up at the rec center to play some ball only to find there's a windless indoor kite competition happening.
who knew indoor kite flying could be so awesome.
were the crowd sounds dubbed or are there actually like 5-10 people standing behind the camera?
nice work Napoleon Kiteamite!
I enjoyed this
He's fantastic, but I enjoyed listening to the orchestral Paint It Black even more :)
officially over a million views. this is what mtp studios does.
this guy is super amazing with wind!!
whats this song i swear ive heard it before?? like on game of thrones i think...
Iam so proud of my Grandson doing this , Love ya Grampa
Interesting video, had me mesmerized.
This is cool, I've never seen anything like it before.
This needs to be a Olympic sports
I clapped when it finished before realising I was all alone in my room.
that was amazing the kite had a personality
Great. I'm watching indoor kite completions on UA-cam. I'm going to die alone.
i never knew this something like this existed until watching this video haha so dope
Great. I always liked windless kites.
Amazing hand/eye/body control!
There have been 12 of these competitions?
Wow. Bravo, sir.
seriously lacking a sparkly leotard, but still i dig it.
Amazing!
how would one get into this kind of activity?
Fantastic music too - which version of Paint it Black is this?
