    Cool trick! I do the same thing with my Source Audio Aftershock pedal. There are hidden "Voice" and "Voice Frequency" controls that allow me to boost or cut mids before the distortion circuit. They can be accessed through the app or bound to physical knobs (replacing "Clean" and "Tone" knobs which I almost never use). I accentuate high mids before distortion for definition, or low mids for "wooliness".
    This pedal also has 4-band parametric EQ after distortion, noise gate, low cut, clean high cut (making it possible to mix in only the low end of clean signal), and the WHOLE SECOND CHANNEL (with separate pre- and post-EQ) for distortion stacking! I just wish that there was a version of this pedal where all of its awesome features would be accessible as physical controls, and not only though the app.

    • @Paajanenae
      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому +1

      Oh yeah, I love the way Source Audio handles their pedals - everything except having to use the app 😅 I've been eyeing the EQ2 to replace the PD7 for me and do a lot more, but it's a bit expensive

    • @mgavrilov
      @mgavrilov Місяць тому

      @@Paajanenae I also have the EQ2, and it's much better in that regard. Thanks to the screen, 99% of the functionality is available without the app. Only some truly set-and-forget settings require the app, like routing options and footswitch modes (e. g. how tuner is activated).

    Thanks for officially answering those questions about this mysterious pedal. As I mentioned on your Instagram post, you made me buy one, and it's really good at shaping. It's almost like the DG Harmonic Booster but more specific in its kind. The form factor is quite annoying, though, but who cares for an always-on pedal?

    • @Paajanenae
      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, I'd love to have a more compact version of just the clean side of this pedal! The Tone-Lok format is a bit clunky 😅

  • @JordonBeal

    I sincerely disagree that the clean circuit of this pedal is it's only usable setting, the distortion channel is one of my favorite tones of all time, it's the only bass distortion I've ever heard without a blend control that doesn't struggle with low end loss. Not sure about the association with Hed PE but I do know that Jo Bench from Bolt Thrower used one, I was never able to find out how though. Either way, I'm stoked to see this pedal get the recognition it deserves, and I would totally buy a new one if any builders out there decide to make a clone. Thanks for uploading such a sick demo! I've got 4 of them in my collection but two of them have those goofy switches you mentioned, the retracting knobs are fantastic for the diy shows I play but the jacks and switches aren't great

    • @Paajanenae
      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому

      Well put! After talking with a friend who reads schematics better than I, I probably need to give the distortion side a new chance 😄 Perhaps even see what I can get for stacking multiple instances of PD7!

    Great video.
    I always hated the distortion sounds, while others said they are good Darkglass alternatives. And I thought I took crazy pills! Glad someone competent and knows great sounds confirms im not! At least in that regard... 😉
    Keep up the great videos, man!
    Really cool pedal! Finally someone who made it work (while many think they can run that hollow sounding distortion and have something cool going.)
    Btw I can only recommend the Tritonlab Lazy Cat mk2. They are not easy to come by, you sometimes can find them on the used market tho. It's hands down my favorite Overdrive pedal for bass, no competition and nothing sounds quite like it! I bet you would like it too.
    That pedal changed everything for me 😃

      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому

      Well said! I've often found that many pedals don't sound that good alone, but by carefully pairing those with other pedals that complement their sound you can reach great sounds! I'll need to keep an eye out for that pedal, thanks for the tip 😄

    I had one of these back in... oof... 2002 or 2003? My mum got it for me for Christmas I think. It worked for maybe a year or two, was obnoxiously noisy, then I got turned onto a Zoom multi FX unit and then the Boss OD, which has been my go-to. I guess the Ibanez Phat Hed took issue with that because when I went to plug it in the next time it was Phat... dead hahaha

    • @Paajanenae
      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому

      Hahah 😂😂 You're an early adopter then, I believe these were released in 2001 and first make an appearance in the 2002 Ibanez catalog but are not marked "new". It's definitely a noisy pedal!

    Great work! I barely can hear any difference. And your EQ section of video kinda approved it. Wouldn't having a parametric eq on your pedalboard would do the same + have more flexibility?

    • @Paajanenae
      @Paajanenae  Місяць тому +1

      Sure a parametric EQ could do about the same thing but those are usually large and expensive 😄 I was looking at the new Ibanez PTEQ for some recordings next month but those all sold out super fast and the next shipment isn't coming in for a while

      @@Paajanenae When I played passives I just used BOSS bass Equalizer GEB7, since then 2 of my main guitars (Kiesel & spector with DG pre) have 3 band eq with mid sweep exactly saves this slot on the pedalboard.

      70€ is the most I've ever paid for one 😅 These sometimes go on the market for more than a 100€ since they're not made anymore, but at that price point I would expect to have the original box and manual etc. included.

    Where the heck did you get the Hed PE connection to the name? It has zero to do with the PD7. "Phat Hed" is just your typical late 90s, early 2000s edgelord spelling. It means "Fat Head". Just look at some of the DOD pedals from that era, you could easily find a bunch of edgy naming conventions during the era when nu metal still ran mainstream. Nothing to do with Hed PE (which stands for Higher Education Planet Earth/Planetary Evolution).

    • @Paajanenae

      As the notation on that part of the video says, someone mentioned that on a comment on one of my videos 😂 No other info about that

      @@Paajanenae oh I see! Well, either way, Hed PE are definitely in the edgelord group too lol. Still, their first EP and their first two LPs are killer stuff! Their bass player and the tone of his Ibanez ATK (very Stingray like) are killer! Sure the lyrics are often extremely over the top, but it's fun in a "I can't take this serious" way. Definitely check it out! :D
