- A popular Tongan dessert, I bring to you, Faikakai. The rich coconut milk is blended with the sweet caramel sauce, added to it is a touch of homemade sweet dough. I hope you all enjoy!
Note: I made the recipe before but the sauce wasn't quite right. I found it was easier to make the caramel sauce with white sugar than brown. Anyways, hope you all enjoy!!! Malo.
Ingredients:
Caramel sauce:
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup coconut milk
Sweet dumplings:
1 1/2 cup flour (sifted)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/3 cup water

I visited Vavau when I was married and my wife's grandmother made this with pumpkin. I never forgot how beautiful it was.
how with pumpkin do you recall?
This is perfect ,for those people like me that don't know how to cook, good way to start, malo...
I love your videos please don’t mind the haters and their two cents. Vave mau pe kihe fakaanga ikai ko ha ulungaanga ia oku lelei. I love your videos because for me growing up, I loooooooooove my mom’s peito and these dishes! I’ve always loved to eat, but never really the kind to sit down and learn how to do it. So now that I have a family of my own, I want to show my little two year old what I grew up eating. So thank you for the recipe. You’re my go-to channel of making Tongan or just Polynesian in general. Malo ‘aupito. ♥️
Paea Fotu aw malo aupito. Glad you love the videos, it’s my pleasure. Let me know the cooking goes and hopefully your girl will enjoy the dishes 😊
TasteoftheSouthpacific oh my! We made the faikakai topai and it was soooooo good! We couldn’t wait, I, actually haha! When it was cooked i didn’t wait for the topai to cool down before slicing and coating it with the lolo but boy it was so ifo! Thank you again for the recipe!
TasteoftheSouthpacific hahaha sorry just realized my husband’s account is linked to mine 🤣🤣🤣 is me Paea though. Lol
I wouldn't call it fkanga....I call it helping out for improvement. Ive tried this n it came out pikipiki. So having others add n help out with their experience is good and help others as well. .I love reading other people two cents for improvement in cooking. There is really nothing wrong with others two cents to mine, every bit of opinion helps,🙏🙏
This Vid brought back memories of my mum. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Ikai pe teke ngalo.
Stay humble thaz our Polynesian way 🤙🏾
Instead of white sugar brown or raw sugar is best more natural then white sugar. It gives it that brown redish colour and smells way better.
thanks have made and cant believe took me years to even know this.. after having so many craves along the way. thank you. such an easy short go to video. Very much appreciated 🙏
I remember this when my grandmother made it for me he was from Tonga. I miss her so much

does not really matter which island belongs to, thanks for the upload from San Rafael ,I'm going try this, ofa atu 🇹🇴
Malo ai leva ke fai ha feiga ngaahi fakakai 😍🥰
A woman presented this to her great grandchild in a taste test video and I was like, I bet I know exactly how that's made. I look up a recipe video, and sans the coconut, I was right!! Interesting dish! Definitely something that comes from a poor home trying to make something delicious. As an italian I can not only appreciate that, but even say admire it. I bet despite all the coconut *I'm not a fan normally* I would probably enjoy this dish, or a variation thereof. Is there a way to do this without the coconut cream?
I came here after that video too. Lol
Yeah I saw that too, you can use full cream instead.
@ohrewahard I have no idea it was a year ago
Ifo atu 🥰😋
Too all those people complaining bout how it’s like this like that, te’epilo. No one asked for your 2 cents
If one is going to post in UA-cam, expect 2 cents and more. Cheers

Greetings from India
Finally found it.
How long does it take to make the Lolo??? So I can know when to start making it after church???
For me it took around 15-20mins. Just set the heat on medium high and make sure you're constantly stirring
Why so much complaints......then lets see if yall can make it......that was a good how to video....thanks....
Sione Malafu I don’t think the healthy minded person would ever attempt to make this. This is diabetic soup
I already made the lolo and it's dark brown lol did I do something wrong??? And my dough is taking forever to cook lol it's still cooking! Lol when I mixed the flour and stuff with the coconut milk and water it didn't really do as much forming as yours did it was still a little dry so I added water little by little til I got the right paste feeling...could that be the reason my topai is not cooking fast???
1) Firstly, its fine if its dark brown, just as long as you didn't burn it (when the sugar is burnt it'll taste bitter(or kona).
Trust me when I attempted the first time making the caramel I burnt my sugar but what I realize is that if you set the heat at close to medium heat and constantly stir till the sugar completely melts, you're good.
2) If your dough was too dry, yes, add a bit of water till you're able to get a somewhat sticky dough.
3) For your dough not cooking fast, it took me about 20-25mins till the dough was cooked. Make sure your water is boiling before you put in the topai.
AND finally, I hope what I mention helps and if it doesn't let me know. Good luck!! 😄
TasteoftheSouthpacific ok yea i burnt it. Dammit!! Lol I'll keep trying tho...I kept my burner on medium high...between #7 and 8 then when I added the lolo I put it down to the #5 obviously I wasn't thinking lol but it smelled really good lol omg the things I do for food lmao. do Thank you so much!!
Lol if it helps try setting it a little lower that way your sugar won't get burnt. Just remember to stir consistently. Let me know how it goes! 😊
TasteoftheSouthpacific I will thank you!! 💙
its all about the heat once you know how to control it then your legend mate
Yall need to try it with coconut caramel sauce 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
suukkeeeee!!!
Gonna try with brown sugar, if I mess it up, gonna paai myself on the head...
Lol you'll do fine, hope it turned out alright
Is there a green version to this? I swear I had it when I was younger. Maybe I’m tripping
No you're not and yes there is. I've been meaning to make a video of it. It's called ngou'a (in Tongan), its made out of taro leaves and it has a jelly consistency.
TasteoftheSouthPacific
I would love to see a video of how to make ngou’a version, my favorite!!!
@@talltonganMe too! I will be putting that on my list of videos to make
Uakai in Buenos Aires 🤦🏾♂️👍🏽🤙🏽
Is that kopai in Samoan??..
Yes it is! 😊
USOz Forever yessir
Hahaha its called faikakai more like faakaikai.
Yes Topai ,kopai same dish! My fave is with the lime sauce! Malo au pito for sharing!!
In PNG call faikaikai kopato
maamaalahi pe ai kii meani..ifo mo fakauakai..hahah ofa atu
That's a pikipiki topai faikakai hihihhh
U don't turn down the heat before u put in the flour. U turn it down after at least it boils twice while topai is already in if you want a mafu(fluffy on the inside) n don't want pikipiki. Topai should grow in size from baking powder. Cut them in pieces n let cool first before adding the Lolo.
I wouldn't add any sugar or milk to the flour mix since ur adding lolo to it which already has so.much sugar n coconut🙏🙏
I cant tell if ive done something with the dough cause i takes ages to cook 😂🤦🏽♀️
Was the water boiling when you put the dough in? Did you put baking powder?
The topai turned out to be glue balls ! Ewww. How come they didnt turn out fluffy ? Any tips pls
Did you put in baking powder? You have to make sure the dough isn't too runny. You want a thick paste.
Yummy! Whats the song please?
Thanks 😄. Funga Sia by Ulise
Lol my Lolo taste kona... did I miss something??
Don't worry, I've been through that. That just mean you burnt your sugar. When you're melting your sugar you want to just start it off at medium heat for about 5 mins or so and than turn it to low heat and you have to keep stirring. Its a process, but keep stirring. I hope you get it next time! And if not, I'll will try my best to walk you through it lol
tolongi he luva toko hhh
@@TasteoftheSouthpacific I'm thinking to usr coconut sugar. You think that would be a good option?
@@twistedara I never tried coconut sugar, but that sounds like no problem at all. Give it a go and let me know how it turns out.
@@TasteoftheSouthpacific Will do. Thanks for responding. 😊
😍Your recipe is perfect. Why don't you add your recipes on Khal page? It's the world's only cooking social media.... You will definitely get many followers.......🤩😍.......🤩
This is originally a Samoan dish called Ko Pai.
no it aint.
Lol polys have some what similar dishes
This is originally a Tongan dish you stupid
Here we go 🤦♂️
It’s originally just food so fuck up!
I had this the other day and now I’ve got diabetes
Love your videos, malo 'aupito
so dough boys lol? bahaha
Thats what I thought 😂😂😂
yes its from the white man.. obviously theyre the ones who came up with flour first back in the day.. i mean after they stole everything from afrikaans!
Look, I'm Pacfic islander myself, and that does look somewhat delicious, but that amount of sugar just spells DIABETES and a lot of health issues. Why not try a healthier route like with maple syrup or agave syrup?
True, I just wanted to create the original recipe but i do like the idea of creating a healthier version. I'll definitely create one, thanks 😊
nunyabiznes nunyabiznes you might aswell go eat a lettuce
Shove that agave syrup up your arse.lol.
Gluten free???🤣
Kaleve toddy is used in Eastern Micronesia and Polynesian Outliers (Coconut sugar/syrup) to sweeten their traditional dishes. Just cut the bud of a flowering coconut or palm tree, collect the sap and boil it into a syrup. Most islands especially those who were shown how to cut kaleve had a lot of sugar in their diet but did not suffer diabetes until the introduction of imported foods and table sugar. Kaleve syrup has a GI of 35 about half the GI of normal sugar.
This website account was deleted n taken by some else that this website is not belong to you the owners are telling fb n you Tube how their receipt being copy and vanished n now we seeing it from Tonga side n you are taking over someone else page will take it to the police hahahahshame
I'm tongan and your lolo does not look right it's to watery!! And your not stirring it constantly enough to get it thick but not too thick it's not cooked all the way ... but hey everybody makes there lolo different!
This doesn’t look like Tongan faikakai to me tbh , a Tongan faikakai looks more rounder and tasty and the brown sugary thing is not meant to be like that !! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I know cause my parents make the best faikakai 👌🏼💯
Parents Make the best Vaku Sala LOL
Very good delicius #gachamovie #caffeejuicereceitafacil #tvbrasil #prayers
