I really don't think it was appropriate to include Black Myth Wukong or Jedi in this discussion of other souls-like games that are "second pick" to From Software games. For one thing Black Myth Wukong is a highly polished and amazing game; Wukong isn't trying to be a souls-like game, there are some inspirations, sure, but Wukong is more of an action game with souls-like elements and NOT a full blown souls-like game. Jedi isn't a souls-like either. Those games are more of a souls-lite than a souls-like, an action game at it's core but with some souls elements. Which is an important distinction to make, because you judge them based on different sub-genres.
valid point, i go more into depth why/how i think black myth wukong strays away from the “soulslike” formula in my video on it. I was mostly just looking to put footage of a game that takes inspiration lmao.
Jedi is more similar to sekiro than any other souls game. It is the strangest game of all FS games and i wouldnt count it as souls, just because it has neat combat.
it was my first ever souls-like game. It is my favorite game up to this point. Technically the player is the puppet that houses the ergo of Carlo so while I consider it a "Pinocchio" story, I feel that the truth is that you are playing as Carlo. I played DS1 and DS2 afterward, and I am almost finished with DS3. I just started Elden Ring. I loved the story, the atmosphere through audio and visuals. As linear as it is, I still got lost a few times because I got turned around. I completed ng+5. I am glad to see the game is still getting some love❤❤❤
You don't really play as Carlo. Yes, you're moddled after him and hold his "soul", but you're still Pinocchio. Geppetto never truly saw you as his son, Carlo. This makes more sense depending on the endings you choose so, spoilers ahead, be warned. After beating the Simon Manus boss, you see Gepetto, as per normal. If you refuse to give him your heart, however, you fight one more boss - the Nameless Puppet. But this puppet is not nameless, no. This is Carlo. Geppetto made two puppets - one using the corpse of his dead child, Carlo, in the hopes of bringing him back to life. The other, Pinocchio, to take Carlo's heart around and gather enough Ergo to revive his son. If you choose to give your heart to Gepetto, he puts the heart in the same suitcase/chest/thingy on the ground that he revives the Nameless Puppet from. Later we see a cutscene where what appears to be Pinocchio, though is most likely the "real" Carlo now, exits Hotel Krat after murdering everyone inside. If you beat the Nameless Puppet though, after refusing your heart to Gepetto, then something else happens. You get knocked to the ground, wide open for attack, and the Puppet lunges into the air to thrust his sword into your chest - and Gepetto takes the sword instead, "saving" you. Notice how saving is in quotes? Because then he has the voice line "Were you going to destroy Carlo's heart?" So Gepetto doesn't care about you, the puppet he created, Pinocchio. He only cares about the heart you carry. Carlo's heart. The one that the Nameless Puppet was supposed to get so he could transform back into the "real" Carlo. Anyway thanks for coming to my lore dump.
@Seraphim_1172 I've 100% the game, watched tons of lore videos, and I just happen to disagree. No where in the game are you named. No where are you called Pinocchio. "P" is assumed to be for Pinocchio because that's what book it takes the original story for the game, but what if it's actually for the Korean word for Blood or what if it stands for Paracelsus and not your character at all. I have seen multiple theories, and I just happen to think YOU are the real Carlo, not the Nameless Puppet, the shell that was Carlo's original body. I understand where you are coming from, but I think it is more superficial. I just happen to think, the way the game developers like to play with the story, that it's a bit deeper.
@@MakingLemonadeFromLemons It almost certainly doesn't stand for Paracelsus considering that that name belongs to the guy talking on the phone during the ending cutscene. With that said, of course the game is a Souls-like, and as such much of the lore is up to interpretation. One thing that supports your claim is that Romeo recognizes us as Carlo during the boss fight, and wonders why we're fighting him since we're friends. But, see, the reason I tend not to believe that we're Carlo is this - we don't have his memories. That, and the costume item "Someone's memory", which is Carlo's old school uniform. Now, if we were Carlo, wouldn't it make sense that it would've been "Our memory", perhaps? Now, it could be interpreted as being Gepetto's memory, but that can go either way, since in my theory it's still stated that we're modled after Carlo, just that we aren't actually him. We also have to consider the third theory that floats around. We aren't Carlo, or Pinocchio. We're just us, whoever we want us to be. We're our own puppet, who happened to be thrown into the events of the story. While I don't believe that theory myself, it isn't completely ruled out. I still personally hold onto the belief that we are still Pinocchio though, and that we're just modled after Carlo. After all, when we hand over our heart, we presumably die. We fall to the ground, our eyes slowly close and the screen fades to black. Then, later, we're shown another puppet who looks almost exactly like us, but they've followed Gepetto's orders and murdered everyone we considered a friend. This is what I believe to be the true Carlo, or at least, the revival of him through the Nameless Puppet, who was gifted our heart during the bad ending. So then, it could be argued. Is it the memories that makes us Carlo, or is it the heart that makes us Carlo. We don't have the memories, but we do have the heart. But does having somebody's organ make you that person? Our memories make us who we are, after all, as without them we become completely different people. This is proven in real life, where people who suffer brain damage and, as a result, memory loss, can develop entirely new personalities. It's because of all this that I truly believe we're still Pinocchio, we're the wannabe, the means-to-an-end for Gepetto to bring back his son. But all theories are valid, and I won't be the one to tell you what to believe. I just believe what I will, for the reasons stated above.
I just finished my first playthrough and I'm halfway through my second already lol. This game hits the spot since I was obsessed with Bloodborne and Sekiro. It's an amazing experience and Lies of P is one of my favourite Souls games now. Even though it's a "souls like" I think this game deserves to be called a true souls game. I'm really looking forward to the DLC now.
@Amurit- In general, I don't like Gank fight. Hell, it's the only reason I feel Gael is better than Friede. The Gank in Phase 2, while well designed it requires increased passivity. Not my strong suit tbh.
I treated myself to the Korean collectors edition of this game and let me tell you the packaging and set up of it was better and more beautiful than most. This really was a project of love for these developers. I can’t wait to see what the DLC will bring!
Spot on! Love Lies of P. I'm still missing a few trophies and I'm so happy I have an excuse to finish that 2nd playthrough! Absolute masterpiece. That and Armored Core 6 were my 2023 GOTY contenders
I played the demo and then preordered the game knowing very well I would get it for free on gamepass. I have no regrets, this became my favorite game ever. I was and still am a huge fromsoft nerd but lies of p is better than everything of fromsoft (in my opinion). So if you are reading this and are on the fence of playing it go now!!! I truly believe this game is perfect. In my rant i also had to say that i loved the video!
Lies of P is probably my favorite souls game ever (as much as I hate to admit it considering it's not an actual FS title). It does everything nearly perfect. The only problem I initially had with it was that I did think it was a bit too difficult. Like, harder than all of From's games by a long shot difficult. However, I knew that it was going to be easy one day, just like all souls games aka once you do something enough times, you will learn it no matter what (which is actually the lesson that i'm referring to when I tell people that souls games changed my life). Also some patches helped. Other than that the game is just a straight up gem to me. I feel like it's been in my life for years and years and years. It boggles my mind knowing that only just recently did we hit the one year anniversary of it's release. Crazy shit, time flies. On a side note, I genuinely believe that the deflect hard tear wouldn't have been in SOTE if it wasn't for LOP. I can't say that for sure obviously, and of course FS pioneered, or at least made popular the concept of deflecting. But, taking deflecting from Sekiro and introducing it to a soulslike title side by side with dodge rolling is the brainchild of Neowiz, and I really think FS liked that. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the new standard going forward (having the option to deflect, or dodge in all soulsborne games made by FS). Anyway, $4 a pound.
The mechanics are so good mashing different ip's ideas, the bosses combat is hard and fair u don't have to fight against the camera and stagger status is visible not hidden like ds, the weapons are a joy. And the Best thing: it runs on unreal engine (5?) dunno why From stuck stubbornely with havok, the buildings and brick look like made From cardboard
This is the only game in the Soulslike genre besides Bloodborne to make me just fire it up to feel that weighty yet snappy, juicy combat even for a minutes before turning it off again. It's like crack. I would rank it below Elden Ring, Bloodborne and DS3, but tied with DS1. The fact I'm even ranking it among fromsoft's games is insane to me but it absolutely deserves it. First playthrough I mastered the twin dragons sword and on my second I was just making absolute abominations of weapon and handle combos just for the fun of it, and this mechanic alone made the second playthrough almost as fun as the first. The really really cooked with this game. Absolute banger that doesn't feel like a developer's first foray into soulslikes.
This game is hard, harder than any FromSoft title, and that what I like about it. The approach that yhe developers took was an absolute win, and definitely the linear level design was the better choice, it was the only game that when I finished it I said: well then, let's go for round 2. Also the soundtrack touches you during every moment of the game. I hope the DLC quality is twice that of the base game.
It is def not harder then any from soft title, having moments where bosses freakout and flail around is about the only thing it has, If you play the RPS game properly the game is stupid easy. With me having a video of owning ng+2 in much the same ways I owned NG and NG+
I played it last summer 2024 and I had a total blast! I really wanted to 100% it and NG+ Laxasia was too hard and even if I somewhat managed to pass her, oof, after seeing that Nameless Puppet, I think the few remaining trophies will stay unlocked. Maybe I should’ve spammed the shield-spear combo! 🤭
@@PhantomSouls-04oh you commissioned it? That explains a lot. I knew I recognized the artist’s name before and it turns out it was from trying to find the source for another one of your thumbnails.
I think lies of p is a great game. I won’t lie though I didn’t fall in love exactly like anyone else. Maybe I need to play through it again. But in comparison to sekiro, to me it falls extremely short. In terms of difficulty and replayability. Sekiro is my favorite game of all time though to be fair and I would play lies of P over Elden ring.
Floor guardian isn't a gimmick. A gimmick would be like Yorn the Giant where you get a super strong sword that only works on him. Floor Guardian you hit his shins until he tumbles
Best souls like ive ever playied that isnt made by from soft, and i gotta say most from soft end bosses dont hold a candle o the polished dificulty of laxaxia and the nameless puppet, the fights took me hundreds of tired and not once i tought a mpve or mechanic was unfair or bs
I hated the idea of Souls games, and had zero interest in ever playing them. I was intrigued by Lies of P's setting and aesthetics , so I put by biases aside, and settled in for the grind. I ended up loving it so much that I did a second playthrough, then played Lords of the Fallen (2023), and about 25 hours of Elden Ring. Lords of the Fallen was okay, but not nearly as good, and I got bored with the cryptic open world style of Elden Ring. I much prefer the linear style offered by Lies of P, where it's all about overcoming the enemies, rather than running around giant landscapes and giant castles/dungeons looking for the next big fight. I'll immediately snatch up any Lies of P DLC or sequels, because this game was something special, and got me to fall in love with a style of gameplay I thought I'd despise.
I rank Lies of P above basically all From Soft soulsborne games except Elden Ring and Sekiro. I'll explain why. Combat: The combat in Lies of P is better than all of them except Sekiro imo. Dark Souls series has good combat but the older souls games is mainly just R1 spam & dodge. There is very little incentive to use anything else because your DPS is just higher if you spam R1 and there is no mechanics like a stance system that encourages you to use other attacks. The combat is also fairly slow in DS3 with the stamina usage being high and stam regen being slow. Elden Ring fixes this with the introduction of the stance system, making heavy attacks and weapon skills deal more stance damage thus given you reason to not R1 spam. Elden Ring also sped up the combat, stamina regen, lowering the cost of actions, etc. But, One of my major complaints with the Dark Souls games and Elden Ring aswell is the noticeable input lag these games have, the input latency is so noticeable that it negatively impacts my gameplay and adds an extra layer I have to adjust to to become more skilled. Lies of P has an excellent implementation of Combat (arguably the best in the souls-like genre), I am much better at Lies of P compared to souls games because Lies of P the inputs happen as soon as I press them, I don't notice any input lag. Plus Lies of P has mechanics like a stance system the encourages you to use other attacks, deflect, and be aggressive and the deflection system is extremely satisfying, the boss fights are extremely well designed with excellent animations, patterns, and tells. I also really like the focus system (blue bar), and the comeback mechanic of the healing flask replenishing from combat & being able to get health back from blocked hits is amazing. Lies of P has a level of satisfaction from skill that I only got from Sekiro. Level Design: Elden Ring is open world, so I will compare it to more similar types of games like the Dark Souls Series. I prefer the level design of Lies of P more because in the Dark Souls series I often find myself lost in dark labyrinths and catacombs not knowing where to go, and sometimes the natural progression of the level will lead you to a dead end and you have to back track and find some side path to move to the next area which I never liked. I also felt the runbacks in the Dark Souls series to be particularly painful. Lies of P was more linear but had tons of shortcuts, boss runbacks weren't too bad, and had enough areas off the beaten path that allowed you to find hidden enemies, items, and hidden quests. It felt just right for me, like a more manageable version of From Soft level design. Story: Lies of P has probably the best story out of all the souls-borne games, Lies of P actually tells the story while leaving just enough up to your interpretation to feel meaningful along with hidden meanings, multiple endings, etc. The side quests also felt enjoyable and easier to discover yourself thanks to the level design feeling less like a maze. While often in the From Software games (except Sekiro) I'm confused as to what's even going on in my first couple playthroughs. Lies of P is like a 9.5/10 for me, it was my game of the Year in 2023 and I cannot wait for the DLC!
For me, the game is nearly a 10/10. The only aspect that made the game 9/10, is the exploration. I love linear games. But exploration feels a bit too « easy ». There is not the fromsoft magic like there is in bloodborne / ds1 / ds3. But what a masterpiece
dodge is fine i can even no damage Nameless puppet only dodge and parry red attack, it's is just too tight for those fromsoft nerd who think they're really good at gaming
First souls game I played was No Rest For The Wicked, fantastic game. Then I tried Lies Of P, also fantastic game. I don't like Dark Souls are so gory and bloody and dark. Gonna try Elden Ring next probably
Call me whatever but most of these bosses aint all that. They start off pretty difficult and somewhat interesting, but when a combo form the boss starts, you always know how it ends. Initially great fights like romeo lose their luster on the second playthrough when you see how barebones the moveset really is.
Man I gotta say you done an incredible work here, just one minor correction here. Black myth wukong is not a souls game or souls like, but rather an action game which has its own elements borrowed from other games, in this case you can take some elements of the souls games, and take these elements to evolve itself and the genre to new heights. Other than that I'm glad that you are doing this. Whether the veterans, casual, or more recent newbies want to admit it or not, lies of p, black myth wukong, stellar blade and so many other recent games have and are evolving the souls genre along with others and even creating new ones (black myth wukong is the best example of this) in so many ways that it's annoying seeing how many just praise from software and miyazaki even though they have made a lot of mistakes in elden ring; where if you don't have favoritism, you can see how flawed it is ; while lies of p being the first major title of round 8 studio and its director are taking everything that made the souls game so good to the next level. This is something that from software and miyazaki have failed to with elden ring and I hope they can do more In the upcoming titles they are working on, because if they keep making more games with such mistakes like they do with elden ring, they'll be left behind on the same genre they made and honestly I couldn't feel so bad for them, I've known them longer than many people who speak with me think : I've been with them since the ps2 era lol. And I know they can do more than souls game, I still want another armor core title different from the last one. Other than this long comment I also suggest you to do a future video criticizing from software, miyazaki and its mistakes, don't be another blind fan or reviewer praising all the they do. Lies of p is objectively speaking better than 85% of from software's catalog with only dark souls and bloodborne being above it ,and perhaps sekiro matches it in some areas because it is also a souls like, and yes sekiro isn't a souls game but a souls like just like lies of p, but the others are bellow it again making special emphasis on elden ring and the dlc. Lies of p is the next great evolution of bloodborne in the majority of it's aspect mixed with some other el from the dark souls trilogy, dark souls and elden ring while sekiro has its second best hand here. This is what the souls and souls like must evolve into ahead of the future, and I can't wait to see what comes in the dlc. If read my very long comment I appreciate it and wish you the best for the next video.
I really appreciate the comment and I totally agree with you! I certainly plan on making a video regarding the flaws i see in from softwares games and I’m glad I have someone so passionate about these games in my comment section. Thanks for the support!
Cinnamon changed soulslikes forever... so did dirt, air, orangutans, pick any word and just throw it into a youtube title, doesn't have to make sense, or be true.
That is a hot take, for sure. Both are good at what they do. If you want a fast paced dance where what you use doesn't matter - Sekiro. If you want a vast selection of weapons to code your own playstyle and go ballistic on any enemies you want in any WAY you want? Lies of P.
I agree, for me the game does what sekiro does best in therms of combat, but it adds build diversity and weapon variety wich always makes a game better
I agree to me it’s not even a hot take this might be my favorite souls game period I didn’t play any of them until elden ring but since I’ve played bloodborne sekiro and ds3 and 1 and I think it’s on par if not better then all of them to me it’s neck and neck with bloodborne and elden ring I’m on new game 10 plus in all 3 I think I’m new game 15 in elden ring and lies of p I only played through sekiro 3-4 times and ds3 twice there’s no doubt lies of p is goated
Lies of p is great no doubt but combat isnot flawless it's not fluid and animations sometimes is janky on the other hand lords of the fallen combat is great although it lack in other aspects.
What he means is it's fast compared to the other game at topic WHICH IS SOULS and what did you also just say? It's faster then SOULS GAMES Do I need to add anything or did you finally understand how stupid that sounded
Not enough visual variety, verticality, optional areas, and side paths for optional loot for my tastes. I couldn't believe how disappointed I was after hearing nothing but good things about this game. Definitely not worth being a full price game imo
I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure both companies working on it have had almost 0 Triple A tittles and even less Metroid or souls like games so some issues are to be expected, it's definitely more linier but I feel as it definitely pulled of what it had to pretty well. But obviously comparing it to something like elden ring I'd be disappointed too.
Lies of P is such a fun game, and it's one of my all-time favorites.

I feel the same way. This is one of my favorite souls games. And I’m genuinely really excited to see what the DLC and sequel has in store.
It's above Bloodborne for sure par with sekiro
South Korea and japanese is rocking with video games
That boss laxisia and Black rabbit was harder than anything in sekiro
Where did you find the thumbnail art from. I went to the artist’s instagram page and didn’t see it.
She does not post the art she makes for my videos sadly. Maybe she will in the future!
@@PhantomSouls-04oh you commissioned it? That explains a lot. I knew I recognized the artist’s name before and it turns out it was from trying to find the source for another one of your thumbnails.
I couldn’t understand how this game wasn’t up for GOTY. They were robbed. It is a much better game than Black Myth wukong in my opinion.
Lies of p was an amazing game it just needs a coop system to play with friends!
I’ve always thought that Lies of P was the only souls like game that’s as good as a souls game
Love LoP and this was a good video but...11:43 "No fights are gimmick ones"
Let's call Door Guardian the exception that proves the rule then :)
Floor guardian isn't a gimmick. A gimmick would be like Yorn the Giant where you get a super strong sword that only works on him. Floor Guardian you hit his shins until he tumbles
Its so good
Best souls like ive ever playied that isnt made by from soft, and i gotta say most from soft end bosses dont hold a candle o the polished dificulty of laxaxia and the nameless puppet, the fights took me hundreds of tired and not once i tought a mpve or mechanic was unfair or bs
Combat:
The combat in Lies of P is better than all of them except Sekiro imo.
Level Design:
Elden Ring is open world, so I will compare it to more similar types of games like the Dark Souls Series.
Story:
Lies of P has probably the best story out of all the souls-borne games, Lies of P actually tells the story while leaving just enough up to your interpretation to feel meaningful along with hidden meanings, multiple endings, etc.
Wow your right sekiro and lies of p is just so better than most fromsoft I hope they get a sequel.
For me, the game is nearly a 10/10. The only aspect that made the game 9/10, is the exploration. I love linear games. But exploration feels a bit too « easy ». There is not the fromsoft magic like there is in bloodborne / ds1 / ds3. But what a masterpiece
I'll die on this hill
Lies of P > Elden ring
Hard Disagree, it's a good, maybe even the best souls-like (not made by FromSoftware), but it's a 7,5/10 imo.
Only thing i hope they improve is the dodging. I dont mind parry beeing difficult but dodging is sometimes little wonky
dodge is fine i can even no damage Nameless puppet only dodge and parry red attack, it's is just too tight for those fromsoft nerd who think they're really good at gaming
First souls game I played was No Rest For The Wicked, fantastic game. Then I tried Lies Of P, also fantastic game. I don't like Dark Souls are so gory and bloody and dark. Gonna try Elden Ring next probably
The Lies can have my P
:)
Me over here praying no one looks at my yt (I love this game & have beaten it numerous times)
Lies of P overall is better than even bloodborne but Old Hunters is better than P. I heavily lean on bosses when ranking though.
Call me whatever but most of these bosses aint all that. They start off pretty difficult and somewhat interesting, but when a combo form the boss starts, you always know how it ends. Initially great fights like romeo lose their luster on the second playthrough when you see how barebones the moveset really is.
“Lies of p is a decent game and here’s why” doesn’t mean “lies of p changed souls likes forever”
@PhantomSouls-04 whenever you need my friend
LIES OF P DESERVED GOTY INSTEAD OF BALDURS GATE
preach it brother
Tried it. The world building is what turned me off. Secondly, soulslike that work for me have dont have defined characters.
Cinnamon changed soulslikes forever... so did dirt, air, orangutans, pick any word and just throw it into a youtube title, doesn't have to make sense, or be true.
Hot take..it's better than sekiro ...haha
That is a hot take, for sure. Both are good at what they do. If you want a fast paced dance where what you use doesn't matter - Sekiro. If you want a vast selection of weapons to code your own playstyle and go ballistic on any enemies you want in any WAY you want? Lies of P.
I'd put it on par with sekiro, above bloodborne and below ds3 and ER
I agree, for me the game does what sekiro does best in therms of combat, but it adds build diversity and weapon variety wich always makes a game better
My mind is telling me no, but my heart says yes.
"its fast" bruh, just because its faster than a snail's pace doesn't mean its fast. Gameplay is still very slow, just faster than souls.
What he means is it's fast compared to the other game at topic WHICH IS SOULS
and what did you also just say? It's faster then SOULS GAMES
Do I need to add anything or did you finally understand how stupid that sounded
Not enough visual variety, verticality, optional areas, and side paths for optional loot for my tastes. I couldn't believe how disappointed I was after hearing nothing but good things about this game. Definitely not worth being a full price game imo
I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure both companies working on it have had almost 0 Triple A tittles and even less Metroid or souls like games so some issues are to be expected, it's definitely more linier but I feel as it definitely pulled of what it had to pretty well. But obviously comparing it to something like elden ring I'd be disappointed too.
Can't wait for the DLC... Hopefully it comes out in 2025 🥲
Eagerly waiting for the Wizard of Oz DLC.
You have any plans on making a video on Black Myth Wukong?
I do!
