- Written by Hiski Salomaa, "Lännen lokari" describes the romantic pursuits of a western logger. Of course, while he sings of the benefits of having a woman in every town, we are also privy to the uncertainty of work and the itinerant lifestyle that many loggers lived.
This version is performed by Laulu Aika out of St. Paul, Minnesota. You can find more of their work here: www.lauluaika....

If you're looking to sing at home with English lyrics, check out the translation of "Western Logger" or "Logger of the West" on pp. 180-181 in "Songs of the Finnish Migration: A Bilingual Anthology," available from University of Wisconsin Press: uwpress.wisc.e...
I’m a logger from the timber camps of the West,
And I’ve rambled nigh all over!
I have been out to Butte and L.A. to boot,
Red Lodge and Miami, sir.
I have been on the sea and the continents,
And the peaks up in Alaska!
And just ev’ry place I go the wild girls all know
The loggers of the West.
Now a logger is a guy who’ll take him a gal,
Even if she is somebody else’s.
Never fear, not a tear will he shed at all,
When he leaves those Eastern lasses.
‘Cause a Butte gal is fine, L.A. stars they shine,
what a snow bird in Alaska!
and they whisper one and all, “Have you seen this fall,
that rambler of the West?”
Where’s a Mexicali gal, Honolulu pearl,
Or a pretty Filipina,
There this logger has been with them one and all,
Better than any city slicker.
Where I cast my eye, my heart beats high,
What beauties head to toe!
If their singing you heard, you would think it a bird,
This logger’s heart does know.
Now Frisco I’ve seen, Oregon I have been,
Where there’s summer and mountains cold.
To Dakota I’ve come, at Palm Beach I’ve swum,
Greeting friends both young and old.
When you build your house, settle ‘neath the pine,
That day for joy you’ll shout.
Though the storms of life can cause us strife,
Freedom finally does win out.

Helkkarin hyvin laulettu, en olisi paremmin laullanut.
Ihanaa kuunnella Amerikan "poikia" laulamassa Lännen Lokaria. Juurista ei irti pääse, vaikka ei ole tarvettakaan. Kiitos
Hiskin esitys on ylivertainen mutta hyvä tämäkin. Hiski's performance is superior, but this one is also good.😊
@@jarikinnunen1718 mistäs hiskin esityksen näkee??

Parhautta! This is probably the most famous of Hiski's songs and while he was not a great singer, he definitely had a way with words. Nice performance!

Hiski was an artist and his lyrics & Finglish still put a smile on everyone.

Wery well done!!!! Thank you of behalf of Lännen lokari!
Musiikki toimii LIVE pohjalta todella hyvin eikä laulukaan moitteita saa. Persoonallinen tulkinta
unohtamatta kuitenkaan Hiski Salomaan ääntä . Pidän hänen versiotaan edelleen parhaimpana
tästä kappaleesta puhuttaessa mutta hyvä että toisetkin muistavat aikansa legendaa.
I cannot say it better, thank you so much. Never seen as a devotion for a foreign matter. You know, Hiski Salomaa was from the area where I've spent my summers. With my wife, we even bought a cottage from there. Every summer, they have special party there, to respect Hiski. The one, whom had courage enough, to leave his home at the wilderness and head for the New Continent. Lastly, thank you again :) Edit: How could you ever sing such a perfect Finnish! Your pronunciation is as good as we do it! Great respect also for the band, of course, very skilled musicians. And wearing the masks, it's an extra plus for you!
He is awesome! this is hard to sing even in finnish.
@@LatexifulNiinpä.Lassi. Täällä Suomessa talvi. Suku asui kyllä Mainessa. Muistin väärin. Omistivat tehtaan. Oli Lauri Toys. Nimi nyt jo kuolleen Vaarin kunniaksi. T. Kari-Pekka

A translation from another youtube-vid of the song:
I'm a walker of western woods and bushes
I have wandered everywhere.
I've been to Butte, St. Louis,
Red Lodge, Miami.
Have crossed the ocean and continents
and Alaska's high hills.
And everywhere the wild girls remember
western wanderers.
And walker is a walker and takes as a girl friend
even someone else's wife.
Well, eyes will not water
even if the eastern girls can't be seen.
For Butte has a rose and Louis has a star
and Alaska has snow buntings
and all of them whisper:
"Have you seen the western wanderer?"
Where there's Mexico's Lempi and Honolulu's Impi
and Philippine's dark-eyed girl,
there the walker has been in their midst,
but has Iiski's Ilkka been?
Where there's walker's darling, there heart beats afire,
so beautiful is their hair.
When you hear the song, you think it's a bird,
again western Jack falls in love.
One has visited Frisco. Oregon seen
where there is summer and snowy mountains.
In Dakota threshed, in Palm Beach swum
and thrashed both old and young.
But when you build you cottage in the redwood stump,
there arrives a happy day.
Though the world's storms rock us,
freedom will certainly win.
Lokari = Logger not walker
Great sounds and arrangement!
Kiitos!
Olipa hyvä!

Great ! Finland on my mind!
My favorite Finnish American singer was always Leo Kauppi; he had this modern rough style, though he didn't write many songs. How nice that you preserve the Finnish American music heritage. It's close to my heart.
Yhä enemään näistä tykkään!!
Hieno veto!
What a treasure!
this is even better than hiski's version. greetings from finland! this should be made into studio quality!
Great vearsion :)

Anteeksi vain. Suku oli Mainesta kotoisin. Mutta punapuun ' raitilta'. Ollaan. T. Kari-Pekka

"Mexicon Lempi ja Honolulun Impi.." Lempi and Impi are old Finnish female names. Lempi also means Love, and Impi means Virgin.
Impi meant a young maiden originally, virgin was a secondary one
