I walked 60km from one end of Montreal to the other

- Join me for an epic 60km adventure where I walked from the very northeastern tip of Montréal island at Parc du Bout-de-l'Île, to the southwestern point at Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. This preposterous promenade took me nearly 14.5 hours to complete, but it was a wonderful way to see parts of the city I’d never otherwise see.
If you enjoyed this, check out my video where I rode my bike 150km around the circumference of Montreal Island: • Riding my bike 150km a...
CORRECTION: at 4:00 I mention that I'm in the heart of Anjou, but it's been pointed out this is actually Montréal-Nord. Apologies for that!
First off, props for surviving the walk!! Not even just for the distance, but for choosing to walk the the highways... If I were to ever attempt such a feat, I'd take the scenic route through the denser parts of town, watching this felt like exploring a concrete wasteland
Thanks! And yeah I know... it would have been more pleasant along one of the shores instead of right down the middle by the 40. Next time I do something like this I'll try to plan for less concrete & tarmac.
You just described all North American cities
That'S because it's way longer through scenic route.
on the west island section you could have waled down brunswick instead and then maybe down chemin ste marie until the timberlea area@@DanSchaumann
@@che8866 Except Montreal does have a lot of beautiful green places and trails to walk through, and you can walk alongside rivers and canals across the whole island. But it will mean walking along the edge of the island and hence adds quite a bit of time to the walk,
J'ai fait des 25 km mais 60km d'est en ouest en une seule journée et avec ce genre de condition c'est incroyable. Merci de partager ça avec nous. ☺
Merci d'avoir regardé! Je suis content que tu aies apprécié. Yes, it was pretty rough out in the cold and rain but I’m happy to have made it. 25km is still a great effort
Ah bien oui jammie
I have lived in Montreal all my life, and lived in Ste-Anne for a few years, while at Mac. You definitely showed places in the east end I've never seen or even knew about. However, I think your trip would have been much more pleasant had you walked along Gouin (north shore) or the Lakeshore (through Beaconsfield), as this is where a lot of the early colonization took place, and there's some historic windmills and other structures along the way. Another place you might also like to walk is along the shore from Pont-Viau, (see Parc île de la Visitation) all the way north to the eastern tip. The Visitation Island is also a historic place with an old water mill of some sorts, I believe.
feels weird to see a place I went every lunch at school to in a decently big video like this
Tabarnak felicitations! Tout qu’un accomplissement,tu m’as donné le gout de faire ca une fin de semaine:)
Merci Shawn, bonne chance! On a lush summer's day / avoiding the 40 I think it'd be quite pleasant
Vas tu partir du parc du boutelou

Dude, I used to live there. Can’t imagine going to Sainte Anne de Bellevue from pointe aux trembles by walk.
I live my youth in L’ile Perrot and all over the place to down town. You’re courageous, kudos.
takes alot of mental fortitude to get through those sections with all the traffic - on top of all that distance. i very much enjoy all your videos thanks
It's rare that i come across beautiful souls like that, i can sense the passion in your videos and music. Keep grinding brother, you're among the rare ones
Quite the achievement! Let’s see more of MTL!
FYI, in the west, there is a bike/walking path about 1km north of highway 40 that goes from about des Sources all the way through to St-Anne de Bellevue. Or Blvd Gouin which is the longest street in Montreal (57 Km) that goes all the way to St Anne’s. Kudos roughing it on the 40 service road (but really not safe…).
He was actually on the bike path you're referring to. It starts off right as he exited Bois de Liesse. You see him walking on it up until Spring Garden I guess.
crazy how we have it easy with modern transportation, really highlights why cities are mostly built around rivers
around drivers 😛*
Yeah it really highlights why a city made for drivers sucks the life out of everything when you take the time to look at it! Could hear the highway noise even in the nature reserve.. no escape
Me and a friend did the same 2 years ago. Took us around 14 hours, but we followed the saint lawrence river and canal lachine the whole way.
We also did something similar in NYC last year.
South side along lakeshore is the only way to do it. You can get killed walking along the highway like that!
@@futureofwhat To be fair, you could die on any street.

@@billsk8 Not from a car going 60mph...
@@billsk8u might be right but walking along the highway is the most dangerous tbf
Was hoping you’d stop at Paulo et Suzanne and you did! The best place to eat along that route for sure.
I was shocked when he didn't get a poutine though 😅
Same😂😂
Im glad you passed by the Route Verte cycling road 6:14. It is the longest continual cycling road in America. I love it and I use it daily for my commutes and fun. The view along the road is awesome and on windy days you get a fresh breeze from the river.
Wow! I'm a Montrealer and would never even consider walking the whole lenght of the island like you did. Impressive feat of ebdurance!
congrats on the achievement. Thank you for taking us along on the journey!
My kind of adventure! Did a cross south to north in Laval in spring 13 km coming back from an appointment downtown. Lots of fun and it is so true you see and find sights you would never come across in other ways! Keep it up mate!
Amazing! I grew up in RDP and now I live in the West Island. I never thought someone would walk this distance. Very nice idea for a video.
listen... that was insane. props to you for not failing to stop and fall into the river at ST-anne-debellevue. awesome stuff
Wow, that's quite the achievement, especially at that time of the year! A month later, it might have been easier.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Bois-de-Liesse and were able to show it. It's one of my favourite parks on the island.
Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on doing it. This brought so many memories for me. I grew up east of town, now live in st Laurent and work in the West Island. Needless to say it was nice to see so many areas that have been important in my life in a single video. Thank you
Always good to get an outsiders perspective on things. Often brings clarity!
Nice walk, well done ... what a shame you elected to walk alongside the 40 from Galleries des Sources to RioCan in Kirkand. There's a pretty good walking/cycle path that runs east-west along the hydro quebec servitude from Bois Francs all the way into SADB village, I believe the last 18K of your walk would have been a lot more pleasant had you taken this route :). Thanks for sharing your video.
Recognized several sections that I've walked on breaks from work. Kudos on doing the whole thing in one shot like that. That's a heck of a commitment.
That comment about the roadwork is so true its sad.
The real reason is because it is Mafia controlled.
What an amazing video, really entertaining, you're so underrated! Haven't seen such a good video on youtube like this in quite a while. Keep it up!
I have always loved watching your videos. You are such a great (and funny) storyteller! 🙂 Congrats on the 55 KM/89K steps hike!!!
Awesome! I did 60km across Edmonton a couple of years ago and it was awesome. Hoping to do it again this summer
wow Dan, a man after my heart. this is incredible! I love walking absolutely absurd distances, but nothing like this! congrats and I bet that sleep after was unbelievable lol
That's so cool to see you living a true adventure in such a simple way! So nice to watch, I will walk more in Montreal now :)
First time here. I am happy of your walk and your tenacity.
Thank you for sharing this video. Merci, Salut.
Thanks for the tour! Here at home in Toronto we got a guy named Johnny Strides that walks lengths of various streets .. looking forward to seeing /learning more about Montreal from your channel.
Bravo monsieur , vous avez beaucoup de mérite et j ai découvert des nouveaux coins de Montréal
great video!
I did the same walk a few years ago, except I just followed Gouin and Senneville streets the entire way.
Thank you! Gouin and Senneville would have been a lot more scenic, a few extra km though.
By the way, I was just scrolling on Reddit and a certain r/montrealcycling post showed up. Before I even saw it was you I was like “that has to be Adam” haha
My comment exactly. Great bike route, too.
@@DanSchaumann LOL
I was curious so I went back to check, and you walked about 1km more and took around 10,000 more steps. You went out of the way to go look at cool things (I literally just followed Gouin and Senneville without diverting), you started at the actual east end of the island (I only started at Sherbrooke/Gouin), and a couple of detours+construction sites probably added some mileage for you.
I remember practically limping and barely being able to walk by the time I got to Senneville (the last 5-10 kilometers were ROUGH). Major kudos to you 😀
@@adamwertheimer OK now I've got to do this. Added to this list, on top of biking from Ottawa to MTL.
Wow! Well done, Dan. Another awesome video!
Hey beau travail mon gars!
The longest i've walked was around Frontenac to côte de neige , And I walk to the food bank every month but this is an epic walk, cheers.
I've started to walk a lot more again after a nasty incident that left me unable to walk for 3 months, and I love exploring Montreal too! Very fun video to watch, thank you for sharing and inspiring :) It's been a goal of mine to explore parts of the city I've never seen and after watching this I want to make sure I do so this weekend.
as a person who lived in montreal for 9 years i am subbing
Awesome. Congratulations! As a long distance walker, I felt your pain, though I’ve never gone that far in a day. My daughter lives in Montreal and I walk a lot when I visit her. You’ve given me some great ideas of nature places to check out. Thanks.
Great walking challenge! Congratulations! I like to take long walks in Montreal, but I prefer to use Sherbrooke, Notre-Dame, go through Old-Montreal, sometimes walk along canal Lachine. I did a round trip between metro Langelier and Lachine a few years ago. Mostly bike paths and no highways. About 50km. It was a long day, but a very pleasant early fall challenge. Good luck with your next challenges.
Congratulations to you. This was pure determination and perseverance. Great video. I ran a few 100 km ultra-marathon, so I can totally relate.
Good job man. That's a nice feat, you made me discover stuff I've never seen and I've lived in Montreal my whole life.
Great job with the video . I spent my childhood summers in Montreal thanks for bringing back good memories
That was a refreshing video that i stumbled upon randomly , im from Vaudreuil pretty closee to Sainte-Anne. Great work keep it up
Loved your video. I did a 50 km bike ride like a week ago and I gotta say, the bikable part of the city is so small compared to the actual island side. Still, I loved my trip, it's so fun to explore the hidden gems of tje place you live in. Yeah sorry I'm french sooo
Wow! Congrats and thanks for sharing!
that is unbelieveable!! Congratulations on that amazing feat!
That's amazing!!! thx for sharing it with us!
Inspiring video - thank you! I agree with the idea of walking the shorelines - gorgeous quiet parks along the water all the way from Old Montreal all the way to St. Anne de Bellevue. Lots of places to grab a lunch, coffee or ice cream. Maybe a summer challenge:)?
you deserve more subscribers! your video is so calming. wow
I've cycled this, but walking it.... props to you sir!
Discovering the hidden gems of Montreal! Merci beaucoup🙇♀
Quite a lovely stroll through such an exquisite city. Keep it up!
Great video! I’m from montreal and I enjoyed watching your adventure!
Good on you sir. You did the walk for me so I wouldn't have to. Much respect for your efforts !
nice video et belle aventure ! Aux plaisirs den voir dautre. Malheureux cette culture du tout voiture
Great video Dan!
This is crazy I’m from Montreal and I always wondered what this journey would be like pretty cool!
it s always nice discover new parts of Mtl . thanks
2:00 such a unique building. I'm always amazed at old building like this and curious on the building techniques of the past.
Congrats on your accomplishment. I know how difficult it can be. I did the 100,000 step in 24 hours challenge last year, which I don't recommend. It ended up being around 77 km (48 miles) and took 18-19 hours to complete. It was brutal but I survived. Cheers and keep walking!
Thanks, cheers from Vancouver!
Great video! 60k in a day is pretty epic! I'm taking it little bits by bits on my project ;)
Classic haha all the construction detours. Thanks for the vid
Those are a pain.
Really enjoyed the part near the La velocite des lieux sculpture, that's montreal-nord, where I lived for the most part of my life. I was great seeing the place I remember. Grats on wlaking all that way, that was very fun to watch.
superbe video. great demonstration also of the state of the city even looking for the bascis of it, which is walking paths... congrats for the accomplishment
It’s the first time I hear of someone who enjoys walking as much as I do! The longest walk I’ve done was from McGill station to a little north of the 40 and Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Pointe-aux-Trembles. Kudos to you 🥳🍾✨ I can’t help but wonder though, how was the recovery?
Visited Montreal once and it definitely had more character than Vancouver!
Wow kudos to you mate for crossing the island of Montréal east to west! Very impressive!
This is great! I appreciate this type of adventure. So many people travel far and wide, but don't really get to know their own "backyard."
I did a walk from downtown Calgary past Nosehill Park close to QE2 highway once. The blisters I got haha. Thanks for sharing Montreal :)
That's an insane walk, I felt your pain 😂
Thank you for exposing me to so many little lovely places that I had no idea existed
Interesting! I like that kind of Urban Exploration. Awesome vid.
By the way, that Park in Pointe-aux-Trembles (beginning of video), is very popular for local bird photographers.
Super intéressant et inspirant! Thanks for sharing
Amazing, congrats Dan! I walk an hour every day, can't imagine walking 14 times that in one day.
I wish cities were made for walking and not for driving.
Nice journey! I’ve run from my house in Pincourt to the clock tower in Old MTL along the Lakeshore and Lachine Canal…it was a fun, tough and rewarding day!
I appreciate the footage of what Montreal is like when going from end to end. I also take offense to all the stroads and highways that plagues our beautiful island, what I wouldn't do to tear down a majority of stroads to break them down into streets. Really, I'd take just about any downsizing of car-culture.
Anyway, thank you for showing the wilderness pockets that still exists in the island.
I love traversing through a city like this, imho it's the best way to really get a feel for it.
I think going out / in / out again is also interesting for the architectural changes and the economic changes as you pass through different income areas.
60km is a hell of a long walk. It was very interesting so for sure your time was *not* wasted. Thanks.
Amazing stuff you did congrats for defeating Montreal🎉😊
4:39 this is Route 125 or Boul Pie XI with a bus ferris wheel art installation. The other end of r125 starts in Hochelaga and goes south of the olympic stadium and le jardin boutanique. The R125 BRT is also there.
Maximum respect !
You made me discover spots in my city that I had no idea existed. I am definitely going to take my camera and wander around this summer
Also, it's really funny to see you walk in my neighborhood. I'm always curious to see what the others think about it.
From what my friends told me, Paulo and Suzanne has quite a reputation as their food is really good
Great content, as a Montrealer thats lived in the East and West, I would definitely suggest doing the lakeshore route
Sainte Annes
Beaconsfield village
Pointe Claire Village
Dorval village
Lachine Canal
Rapids of Lasalle
Into verdun
Atwater canal
Old port
Almost all of this has some sort of biking or walking lane. The scenery is gorgeous, great places to stop and eat and tons of history and nature.
i once got out of the theater in downtown Montreal after watching The Matrix 2 and i walked all night long (35 KM walk) starting at 1h30 A.M. and got to my suburb town of Repentigny at around 8h00 A.M. ... was working graveyard shift back then so it was a nice walk instead of working 8 hours .
I honestly want to give my congrats especially for the stretch around Pointe Ste Claire. You didn’t even start to complain that I knew it would be the most terrible part, even if not the longest and even if the start wasn’t even remotely scenic either lol
I used to live in Montréal and would do this all the time, especially in late spring/ early summer. Not this EXACT route, but it sure felt like I might as well have tried this. Great job !! :)
Great video, really loved. It was great to see the easternmost part of the island, which is quite unknown to most residents of Montreal. The parc du bout de l'île where you started your walk is a favorite spot of mine. I usually ride there on my bike on summer mornings. It's about 30 km from my house in Saint-Laurent and another 30 km back, so a nice workout. The whole area called the Parc Nature de la pointe-aux-prairies is lovely. And yes, you can see deers out there. Around the 6:15 mark in the video, you're walking in Ahuntsic, more precisely the Parc Maurice-Richard, named for Rocket Richard, who lived just right by it until he died. This is also a favorite spot of mine on the island. I went a few times to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue on my bike, but I hardly ever go now because the bike path on Gouin west is quite dangerous and very, very badly designed. It's only good after Cap Saint-Jacques, but before that, it's a real pain in the neck, especially in Pierrefonds, in my opinion.
Awesome video my man!
Cool to see a fellow Montrealer do this crazy trek. I've always wondered what it would be like to walk across the island! :)
Great video man
Respect
Looks lovely.
WOW !! i live in MTL so i know exactly what you went thru ,,, along the TrasnCanada HW ufff impressed , thats a horrible one to walk specially when you already walked like 70% of the way. Well done congrats !
Awesome video and feat. Compliments to you.
Another Montrealer seeing parts of his city for the first time - but - when you got to Galerie des Sources and started along the highway, there is a parallel road that you had been on earlier - Gouin - that continues along the river and is much quieter :)
great video!
Nice!!!!! Thanks for sharing
Amazing!
You deserve a thumbs up and a follow for that. 🇨🇦
Congrats for completing your trek. I sure hope you were wearing some sort of reflective material when it reached dusk. It's essential when walking along a highway.
What a walk ! Cheers mate
