- I am stepping away from macrame tutorials today to fulfill a special request. If you follow me on Instagram @FibersOfMine, you know that I weave and spin yarn as well.
Few people reached out to me recently with questions about spinning art yarn on a spindle.
It is tricky for sure, but it is possible.
This is a quick video on how to chain ply on a spindle.

Wonderful tutorial! I’ve been doing 2-plied yarns and I wanted to try doing a different ply this time. All the tutorials I’ve found were on spinning wheels, and not on spindles, so thank you for your video! ☺️✨

Does the ply have to be perfectly balanced or can you have twist to make it a little smaller? Will it go away when you snack it?
I would definitely recommend thwacking the plied yarn. It will make it more fluffy and loftier. As to the twist, if I have a bit extra twist in the yarn after plying, it usually does go away after setting and thwacking. I hope this answers your question.

You can use a weavers knot to tie the two ends together. There are a lot of tutorials on UA-cam that show how to tie it. Hope this helps :)

Do you need to have really thin spun yarn?
Hi Nicole. No, you don't have to have a very thin yarn.
I've just recently been learning spinning on a drop spindle; and when I looked up ways to ply the singles (when the only tool I have at my disposal is the drop spindle), this popped up. I'm wondering if maybe I should try this, rather than rigging up some kind of makeshift bobbins or something... Or is there a better way for me to learn? I've been practicing with acrylic roving style fiber I found at Hobby Lobby, as I don't want to ruin any wool (yet, lol).
Hi Rosie. Thank you for reaching out! Are you talking about the center-pull ball that I created on a yarn winder before plying? If so, than yes, that is one of the ways you can ply and you won't end up with some of one of the singles left. Because if you create two balls of signles it's hard to get them in even lengths, so you will always end up with some leftover yarn. So what I do usually if I have two bobbins or two singles that I am plying, I would get to the end and then create a center-pull ball to ply the rest. did that make any sense? LOL
Oh, and as to your comment about practicing on the acrylic rowing, I truthfully would recommend to bite the bullet and get some beginner friendly wool. Because you need to learn how to draw properly and if you are working with material that is not beginner friendly and hard to spin, you will not get the same experience, you might not be stultified with your results which might lead to you quitting altogether without even realizing how amazing spinning actually is. That is just my take on it. My first yarn wasn't great, but I still used it in my weaving, so it wasn't a waste.
@@fibersofmine Thanks for replying! Yes, I have a small yarn winder that I can make small center pull cakes with. My trouble has been knowing where to go from there! I've seen people saying that if you ply with both ends from one cake, you can mess up your twist. So I was wondering a couple of things: does that really mess up the twist? And if so, maybe this chain ply technique is the way to go? And I do have some merino wool that I haven't touched yet. I'm really paranoid about spoiling it, but you're probably right. I'm sure it will be different to work with than what I'm practicing on..
@@RosieLeonhart It is true that you will loose a little bit of twist plying from a center pull ball, but it is not significant. So I wouldn't say it will mess up your twist. You might just want to put a tiny bit more twist into your single if that is a concern, but if you are just starting out and practicing, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I would suggest trying both and see if you notice any difference. Of course you will have to be sure to do this experiment with the same batch of single that you spun.
As to the chain plying, it is essentially a 3-ply not a 2-ply, so you will get less yardage at the end, just keep it in mind. But I certainly encourage you to try it. I love chain plying personally. It was a bit of a learning curve at the beginning, but when you get a hang of it, it's goes pretty fast.
@@fibersofmine Thank you so much for all the advice! Overthinking things is a specialty of mine, haha. But yeah, I appreciate you taking the time to explain to me a bit! It really helps. I think I'll try both methods on the acrylic practice fiber I already have started on my spindle, just to see how it goes, and then take the leap and start using some wool. Thanks again!
I set the drop spindle yarn before the ply. Can you do it again once you do the ply?

If you set your single and then plied it, you should set the plied yarn again.
