I am sending a spindle and top to my great niece along with this UA-cam to help her learn how to spin. She has recently seen Sleeping Beauty and is interested in spindles. My nephew is going to help her learn how to spin. This is the clearest tutorial on spindle spinning.
I recently became a member of the Fiber Artists of Northern Arizona. They showed me how to spin on a drop spindle, lent me a spindle & gave me fiber to practice at home. When I started looking for additional internet help, this video stood out as the best one on the internet for beginners. Thank you Schacht!
This is GREAT - I have watched so many tutorials on youtube and this is the first one that helped me actually be able to use my new drop spindle! Thanks!
Excellent tutorial! A few friends and I watched and none of us even noticed the music and heard everything you said perfectly. Including two friends that have some hearing loss that were seated 8 feet from the screen. Very easy to follow. Can't wait to start spinning some vegan fibers! Thank you!
This is a great turorial! Haven't seen a better one yet. During social distancing due to Covid-19 al over the world I finally can take the time and start to spin. Thank you so much for making that possible
I have never seen a spindle with the hook on the whorl end! I've only ever seen them with knobs on the whorl end and hooks on the staff end (or no hook at all - just a knob on both eds) Thanks for the upload - I love seeing new things.
i'm hoping to make a lot of textile-based things for the commune friends and i are joining--here's hoping i'll get to use what this video taught me lots and lots!
Thank you so much. I just received my first spindle ( top whorl) today!!! So excited to start and you have demonstrated wonderfully. P.S music didnt bother me at all, wasn't distracting at all heard everything you said.
Are you left handed? Does this give your yarn a different spin direction (Like Z versus S)? I'm super curious how this works for leftie spinners Thanks!
In this video, Ben is right handed! The spin direction stays the same for right and left handed spinners. We have a short video on Z Twist and S Twist here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsWikByPmxrD8 and we also offer a detailed article on spinning with a drop spindle here: schachtspindle.com/a-beginners-guide-to-spinning-on-a-drop-spindle/ If you have further questions, feel free to e-mail us at info@schachtspindle.com. Happy spinning!
I've been trying to get this started for the better half of an hour, but I can't seem to get it to the point I see pros at where I can hold it in one hand and slowly pull in the other- it starts spinning back so quickly that I just don't have time! Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
Hi there! Spinning on a drop spindle takes a lot of practice! We would love to be of help. Feel free to e-mail us with your questions at info@schachtspindle.com :)
I really liked your video but for new beginners learning to ply they needed to know how to test for a balanced yarn. An over twisted yarn can cause so much trouble when you knit with it. 😀
There was bg music?? Weird. Your hands are piano hands! How many octaves, I wonder? Did having long fingers help learn to spin, or hinder? I thought my own stubby fingers helpful for embroidery, is why I ask.
Thought the tutorial was great, learned so much thank you. Honestly I found the background noise off putting, not the music, but the clatter noise of things and people, I found this disconcerting whilst trying to concentrate on your very informative well presented tutorial. Thank you I wish I could spin like you, sigh, maybe someday😊
I don't think music belongs in tutorials. It's an unnecessary distraction. Some people have hearing problems, and the acoustics in the room are terrible. He sounds like he's down in a well. Personally, I hate these "talking head" tutorials. None of us want to see the presenter. We want to examine the products. He lamely waves a ball of roving around; they supplies are shown for an instant and you can't examine them. Frankly, it's awful. You need some still close-ups at key points. I suggest you go to a local high school or junior college and get a geek who understands this sort of thing to help you make an effective tutorial.

We're thrilled to hear that! Let us know how she enjoys it!

Yes, this IS the most helpful demonstration I have seen. Thank you and bravo 👍🏼
Brilliant demonstration and tutorial thank you!I have watched several on UA-cam and this by far the best.Concise and super clear🙏👍😊

Glad it helped!

You look EXACTLY like the type of guy who would know how to use a spindle. Amazing!
Thanks - this is exactly what I needed! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
The end is charming.
Very good video, I learned a lot from it.
Thank you very much.

Which way do I wind yarn on the spindle? The same as my twist or the opposite way?
Very informative thank you so much.

Visually this is great. But that music drowns out a lot of the syllables, makes it stressful to listen. Please lose the music and keep the speaking.

Thanks for the tips!
Huh.... It's an upsidedown spindle from what I'm used to seeing. And I've never seen anyone use a "leader" from other yarn before. Interesting.
🥰😍🤩
"And that's why they called it drop spindle" 💀
😂
Nice tutorial! But please invest in a lav mic
Good tutorial. Music like a Chinese water torture.

Explications parfaites mais en effet, cette musique, trop forte, est horripilante et nuit à la compréhension :)
I turned off the sound because it was so annoying with the music used CC
Very interesting but why that irritating background music????
I'm happy to hear you find it interesting! This is one of our much older videos, you should check out our newer ones!
Background noise is quite annoying.

Thanks for the input, Karen. See you next Tuesday!
