PLY Magazine is running a Spinalong to coincide with the launch of their book, 51 Yarns to Spin Before You Cast Off. You can post your entries on their Facebook, Instagram and Ravelry groups with the hashtags #51yarns, #handspunyarn and #plymagazine. There's a different theme each week and you can find a list of the topics and other information here: plymagazine.com/ply-books/51-... The best part is that one winner each week gets a one-year subscription to PLY! I've decided to play along in video form as well by creating a video each week to correspond with that week's spinalong theme.
This week it's Chain Ply (also referred to as Navajo ply). Since I've already demonstrated how I chain ply on a wheel in the Self Striping week, this time I talk a bit more in depth about chain ply and show how to ply on the fly when using a spindle.
    Here's a link to the Self-striping episode: • How to Spin a Self-Str...
And one to Grace from Babbles Travelling Yarns episode where she discusses Ply on the Fly: • Babbles Travelling Yar...
Next week (w/c Monday 24th September) is Medium Wool. Hope to see you again then. In the meantime, happy spinning!

The best instruction I could find!! Thank you. The part with the crochet hook really brought the concept home

Thank you so much for this. I've only recently started spinning, and my spindle is a little on the heavy side, so I've been having issues dealing with thin singles during plying. It occurred to me to think about chain ply on the fly to help with that, so I looked it up and here you are! Also, LOVE your plied hair! Actually paused for a minute to go try it on my own! :D

Your ply-on-the-fly demo here convinced me I can do this. I now have an Akerworks drop spindle with arms and mastering the techniques. Thank you for sharing this. I am looking forward to demonstrating this in the summer at farmers markets.

This was a great episode and demonstration of ply on the fly. I’ve tried this long ago with a spindle somewhat successfully, before I purchased a wheel, but this has motivated me to give it another go. Thanks so much for your videos!

Another interesting episode...I'm just learning to spindle spin after 40 or so years of wheel spinning, but will definitely try this plying method when I gain more experience and confidence. I had to watch more than once as I kept getting distracted by the gorgeous sweater (jumper) you're wearing, and also by how well Dexter color coordinates with it! Such a handsome boy😗

Enjoyed this episode. Going to give chain plying a go with my drop spindle, hopefully mine will turn out as yours did. :)

Interesting plying. Can spindle but never tried chain ply. May try this some day. Thanks Becks

Thank you for this. I did my first chain ply on my wheel but keep running the spin too high as I was all fingers and thumbs. I'm going to try this with the turkish and hopefully the slower ply will help my hands to get the method.

I have ordered the Akerworks lazy Kate at your recommendation. Was getting ready to order a drop spindle and had been looking at the "lotus" design (because it's pretty). You have convinced me that this design is more functional and that's what I am really needing as a new drop spinner. I like having another option other than my Kromski Minstrel. Thanks, Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee

What kind of drop spindle is that. It looks very interesting. I learned to spin on a homemade drop spindle with angora fiber. I don't have the money right now to get a nice wheel (plus I can't decide what one to get) though I did have a dodec wheel for a while. I have chain plied many times but I love the spokes on your spindle for parking your loop. Wonderful video. Thank you
