- Dr Chhaya Chauhan (GDC: 83940) explains how you should floss (clean in between) teeth.
Step 1: Pull out and cut off the reel of floss about 18 inches (45cm)
Step 2: Wrap the ends around your two index fingers, and stretch it between them, so it is fairly taught, leaving about 6 inches between the two fingers.
Step 3: Gently position the floss in between teeth, flex the floss slightly so it cups around the edge of one tooth in an C like shape. Move the floss up and down to get rid of plaque. Repeat this for the tooth on the other side of that same gap.
Step 4: Repeat this for the tooth on the other side of that same gap.
Step 5: Repeat this process for all teeth and gaps in the mouth.
Step 6: Dispose of the floss.

Schools teach hygiene, aren't it?
I remembered when I was a toddler, my mom brushed my teeth, cleaned my tongue, showered me, dressed me, and combed my hair. When I was old enough to properly hold a toothbrush, she taught me to do it myself, but she'd stand there watching until I was done. Whenever I didn’t do it correctly, she'd take the toothbrush from me and showed me how it was done. I can't recalled how old I was when I began doing all those things correctly for myself.
Our school teacher also taught us hygiene. Every morning was an inspection line-up. Our hair had to be neatly combed, teeth and tongue had to clean, fingernails well trimmed, uniform neatly pressed, and our white sneakers had to be cleaned and white, "not grey or black!" Every teacher in our school did the same with their students.
Btw, dentists also came to our school (all children were scared to see that big blue van), every few months to check our teeth, and we never had to pay for anything!
This video was extremely helpful. I hate flossing but after my dentist appointment today she definitely recommended me to do it more often but the proper way. I was so use to using the wax ones with the handle but she preferred the string floss which I hate.

Great video. I, like many others arrived here after getting some very overdue and needed work carried out on my teeth at the dentist yesterday. Flossing was also recommended to me. Are there major advantages with using a water or air-based electric flosser, or does the traditional manual floss suffice? Having a huge water device in the bathroom seems a bit cumbersome. Thanks!
Great question. There is a much longer answer, but the short answer is floss and/or interdental brushes are generally considered best and will more than suffice.

@@ElectricTeeth Very helpful, thanks! Will try standard floss to begin with. How often do I need to use more floss? Is six inches sufficient for a whole session, or will I need a further six inches for each new "gap" I clean?
You should be able to use just 1 piece of floss per session. If you need to use more you can. 👍
I always thought flossing would be after brushing, thank you for the info
You should, that's what my dentist told me at least. The fluoride from the toothpaste kills the bacteria in between your teeth by flossing.
@@broes that makes no sense. Why would you get all of the debris and plaque off of every other part of your teeth just to floss afterwards and then fall sleep with debris sitting everywhere from flossing after you brush? Just doesn’t make sense.
@@ArchMannarino I brush then floss and at the end use mouthwash. Based on my teeth condition it works really well.
Ok I'm buying a water flosser thanks to this vid! Always avoided flossing as my teeth are tight together and its scary when the floss rips and gets stuck inbetween my teeth, so a water flosser will hopefully be ideal.
I've been hearing two sides for flossing. One being before brushing to get everything out then brush so toothpaste can get in between teeth better. The second way being brush first, floss after and the floss would be simultaneously getting everything out while pushing the toothpaste in between you teeth and gums better. Then let's say you use an anti cavity mouthwash after so either way food is getting out of your teeth. Is there a better way or is it a continued debate?
Continued debate. Simply put doing either is better than nothing.

I never knew you’re supposed to get right up beside the gum. Thank you!
Could I use water flossing after the tape flossing?
The sequence look like this:
Tape floss < Water floss < Toothbrush
Yes you can. There is some argument that the effectiveness of the water flosser would be reduced as the majority of plaque and bacteria build-up will have already been removed. But, if you are happy to invest the time, then no issues with this.

Flossing is actually a great time killer, lol. I'm having fun doing every then and now.
Water flossing DOES NOT replace string flossing. Of course, water flossing is better than not flossing at all. Ideally, you should use both. I use a water flosser before brushing, then string floss afterward. When you use string floss after brushing your teeth, you're spreading the flouride toothpaste between your teeth. It's all personal preference, I suppose.

i believe i am starting to develop the very first stages of gum disease. what should i do to prevent it from further getting worse and to stop it now before it is too late. thank you so much!
Hi Victoria.
Bleeding of the gums or red and puffy gums are usually (but not always) the only sign of gum disease.
The main thing to do is brush twice a day, for at least 2 minutes each time and with the correct brushing technqiue. You should then floss at least once a day too.
Using a manual or electric toothbrush is fine, but if you have or can use an electric, it might be a bit more effective, removing more of the plaque that causes the irritation of the gums.
You then want to ensure you are using the correct brushing technique. Here are a couple of videos to guide you.

Keep this up and within 2 weeks you should begin to see improvement. If you do not see improvement and you are experiencing pain etc you should speak to your dentist.
Hello! I have a question, do you recommend flossing in the morning or before bed ?
Great question. This is one that isn't talked about all that much and the honest answer is that either is fine as long as you do it at least once a day. Our preference would be before bed.

A classic.
well .. thats what she said
how come I've never known about flossing my entire damn life?
I just switched to string floss but I find the preloaded floss much more easier and suits me well. Should I switch back or stay with string floss?
I am not sure how long you have been using floss, but maybe try giving it a bit more time to get used to it?
If it has been a coupe of weeks already then it is unlikely to get much easier.
Sticking with string floss will be better for the environment, than preloaded floss. But, ultimately you need to opt for the tool that is going to ensure you floss regularly and correctly and that may well be the preloaded floss.
Fort the first time ever I have started flossing. I floss after each and every meal, even after eating snacks. And boy did my bad breath went away.
Now there's a pleasant smell coming out of my mouth from time to time.
This is Iike the best thing I've done in a very long time.
By the way, I use this one 3:39
I floss morning and night and after eating, so several times a day. I use a Sonicare 2-3 times a day. My dentist said if I get a water flosser I can get into the missed spaces! So instead of adding another thing on my counter I’m trying the All in One toothbrush head by Philips to target the area. I’m surprised with using double time on my brushing and excessive flossing and rinsing I still miss some area of my teeth.
Interesting. I am somewhat surprised.
Water jets can reach areas you might be missing with floss, but it's unlikely to make a big difference to the results you are getting. If you are doing everything 'right', which it sounds like you are it's a little uncommon to suggest.
Did your dentist suggest you are missing a lot of areas or have a lot of plaque buildup?
Have you had your flossing technique checked by a dental professional?

Thank you very much for this video 😇 However i would recommend anyone not to use jet floss. I chew xylitol gum after every meal.. My teeth have become superwhite after 2weeks since I started. Some studies say it's more effective than flossing as they kill bacteria that produce acid in your mouth. What do you think?
Chewing gum can have benefits. A study has shown that chewing gum *_could possibly_* have the same advantage as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly. However, the likes of the American Dental Association make it very clear that this should not replace these vital procedures. They recommend brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque from the tooth surface and flossing regularly to remove these bacteria from between the teeth.

If you are struggling you might want to look at interdental brushes on long handles. The TePe Angle brush for example will help you reach the very back.
"when something's really long, it's hard to put it inside your mouth".
LMAOOOOOOOO
How long should you floss for? I feel like I'm spending way too much time in the bathroom JUST flossing before a brush even goes anywhere near my mouth. Also, if you're not supposed to reuse the same piece of floss, why on earth do those floss sticks exist? Do you just rinse it? Is that safe/hygienic? Or are you supposed to use a fresh one for each tooth which seems super wasteful to me..?
Once you have perfected flossing, it should really only take about a minute or so to do the whole mouth as a very rough guide. Using interdental brushes can be easier and quicker, if this is something you haven't tried.
You can reuse floss, but usually, you will pull out a length of floss and as you move around the mouth use a fresh part of that length of floss between each tooth.
Aim to use a new piece of floss, each session, for example, ideally don't use the same floss morning and night. But you can use the same piece of floss for the whole morning flossing session.
If the floss is damaged, like it rips or shreds, then you might want to get a new piece.
@@ElectricTeeth 2 different flosses morning and night??? Don’t you floss once a day? And why do we need different floss
@@ElectricTeethOnly one minute? It takes so long for me to get the floss between my teeth without cutting my gums because they are very close, it takes at least 8 minutes. Even the dentist needed some time to get it in
Than you for this informative video. I have difficulty of using floss but after I watched this, it made me easy.
Question! For the pre-loaded flossets, do I have to grab a new one for each tooth? So I won't be spreading the debris to my other teeth? Or can I use the same one for all of my teeth?
Use the same one for all your teeth.
The passing of the floss through the interdental spaces, should free up any debris and that should then be cleared away with brushing.
If you notice a buildup on the string, give it a wipe or a rinse to refresh it if you prefer.
It's a bit difficult when your teeth are misaligned. Plus I'm the one who produces quite a lot of saliva in the mouth. It's just HARD.
I'd recommend a water flosser if you have misaligned teeth. Also it may be worth looking into getting them straightened as they may cause other gum related issues

Yes. It's a con by dentists ensuring repeat custom.

The floss will and should naturally move up and down the side of the tooth and under the gum too as you work towards the bottom of the tooth. It is important to get under the gum to remove all the plaque and debris. It builds up most under the gum.

Okay, I tried it and I gave up lol.. looks like it's going to need some practices..

How’s ur teeth and gum health right now? Prior to flossing
Not good. Cz I literally gave up. But I plan to start practicing again bcs I got some gum issues lately 🤦
Are floss holder good? Do Floss holders like Flossaid allow a user to turn the knob to a new section of floss.
I have not used this one. They can be helpful for many people.
That was extremely helpful. Thanks 😊
is flossing with string better than a water flosser? also if you use a water flosser, should you do that before or after brushing?
Great question David. Most professionals would say yes, flossing with string/tape floss is better than a water flosser as you have the physical contact of the floss with the teeth. So if you can do this, then it is better.
If however using a water flosser is more convenient for you and means you are more likely to floss than perhaps not at all or very rarely, then use the water flosser.
A happy medium might be a combination of both.
As for flossing before or after, debate will always range on about this too. Our view is better before. But ultimately either is better than not at all.
Use interdental brushes. Much better.
Do you have to use the same string of floss for every tooth?
You don't have to, but that is the idea. 1 piece of floss for the whole mouth.
hello Electric teeth, I have recently started flossing(never did this before). its kinda tough for me to get the floss out from between my tooth and the region I am flossing starts to bleed mildly. This is the first time I am flossing so is that normal?
Bleeding when flossing is not 'normal'. However, it is normal if you haven't done it regularly before, if at all. It will usually stop within a couple of weeks. If it doesn't there might be another cause.
Try not to force the floss, take your time. If you don't find a particular floss easy to use, there are different types that might be better suited. Some are thicker, thinner, waxed and unwaxed. Most flosses work for most people though.
@@ElectricTeeth Thanks alot
Hello. I had never flossed until today. I was extra careful to went down to the gum lines but there was no bleeding at all when I was done. So am I doing something wrong maybe? Should I try to go even deeper when I reach the gum line?
The floss should be passing a little under the gum. You don't want to go too deep as you could do damage, but if the floss is actually reaching under the gumline slightly then you are doing it right. Not everyone will bleed. It sounds like your have good teeth and gums. Of course the best opinion comes from a proper assessment form a dental professional.

1:32 When you go to the other side from the same gap, do you still use the same floss with the debris from the left side?
Many will, but you can change or clean the floss if you prefer.
Electric Teeth is it okay if i use the same part of string for everything but i rinse it with water everytime after i've flossed one side?? Please answer thank u so much!
Yes it is, to a point. You may find the floss becomes a little less effective with repeated use of the same part, but you should be able to manage a floss of the whole mouth with no trouble.
Ok, I brush my teeth twice a day and use mouthwash regularly, but I don't floss, am I the only one? 😂😂💔
same here
Shiet, same brotha
I floss everyday but I never use mouthwash, is that okay ?
Mouthwash isn't essential
Well then you would regrets later as even after brushing twice and using mouthwash my back tooth is sensitive to hot and cold..so flossing is essential
Is it too late to begin?
No, never.
Perfect example Thank you ❤️🌹🙏🏾💪🏾
