"It's all about the structure. not beatmatching" That is the most useful line I've heard in regards to mixing pop music. As someone who plays at 18ths mostly, this was incredibly helpful. A lot of pop songs will being their vocals immediately so it was virtually impossible to properly beat match. Thanks heaps for this tutorial!
Needed to hear that I’m still a real DJ even though I don’t beat match 8-16 bars in between each song. Weddings are so on the fly, and the dance floor is so picky every single gig,, sometimes I’m picking the next song 10 seconds before I play it,, lots of audibles, impossible to blend for 8-16 bars and mess with bpms instantly. BUT you raised the most important part. Count your 1,2,3,4s Again, thanks for the reassurance
I feel hip-hop & afrobeats are the hardest genres you can ever mix. I would like to see you take on some hiphop tracks. I'll jump start with a list: 1. Lick - Cardi B 2. TTD - Nav 3. Mask Off - Future 4. Bambi - Jidenna 5. Tunnel Vision - Kodak Black And if that doesn't wear you off and you feeling like superman, i'll like to see you take on these afrobeats tracks: 1. Mad Over You - Runtown 2. Daddy Yo - Wizkid 3. Prayer - DMW Ft Davido & Mayorkun 4. Away - Psquare 5. Do like that - Korede Bello Hopefully if you decide to take on this challenge, we all can be able to learn more tricks !
Johnathan Lewis 2017 - "What I've got here is another very poppy song, Maroon 5. OMG! You know, never thought I'd be playing something like this in a turorial BUT, music is universal. " LOL!
I wish you made this tutorial months back when I had my first gig where I couldn't play mostly electronic music and had to improvise with Top40 stuff...but I figured out those tricks quickly. So thanks for confirming that what I've been doing is correct! Slowly fading in pop songs with other pop songs only works if there's no lyrics in the intro, which is always hard to find, but I found that using a delay/echo combined with a HPF helps you in the case of vocal overlays
There's more to transitioning than cueing and cutting, put your own feel into it at the right time. Best advice to beginners is to know your tracks! Know what you're playing, prepare and practice
I don't think anyone at the christening or bar mitzvah will be worried if you miss the beat, bar or phrase! I'm not being negative cos you clearly love music and that's all that matters to me. But Id always say that a bag full of the right music will always deliver more than any mix at this level, in fact at any level. Its always about the tunes ✌️️
I have my very first gig on 4th September, a 40th surprise birthday in a social club, so gonna knock out some 90s some Motown and a couple of ska, not my kind of thing, I’m a tech house guy, but got to get out there, I refuse to play wham or ABBA 😁 I’ve been trying to transition using the eq controls but it’s pointless, or at least hit and miss, so I had resolved to sliding one in as I slide one out ( how boring ) but know I can at least attack the 90s dance with your chop 😁😁
You are a Jedi, I’m a mere padewan, but I look at your setup and see similarities, it’s about the music not super neat wires, and perfect brand new top of the range equipment, if you can DJ, you can DJ, you can be an ‘all the gear no idea DJ’ or you can be a DJ, I wanna become ‘a DJ’ Thankyou
Man. You been my main man go to guy for this shit since 2011. I learned my way around pioneer decks literally 80% because of you. And copped some great songs from your tutorials too. O, I even can hear tweeks in the mix and I know exactly where your going to scroll the tempo match wether clockwise or counter. .... I'll tell you what though. Don't put two vinyls and a mixer in front of me. I'm new age the next generation and can't stand to work out that shit old school
im mew to djing im a beginner. i got a numark pro 3 to practice and look at videos. can u do a video series for beginners? like start from the way start to doing better and tell us how to do it step by step and what this does and mean if so please respond to me😊 thank you, you seem like a pro dj thays why im relying on you. thanks again😊
I was really interested in figuring out how to transition from house to other genres or just do sets with other music other than house where I can do slower transitions and UA-cam recommends this. I really worry too much about "perfect" transitions.
You’d be surprised the amount of mixes I hear from pro dj’s when I’m looking for new staff that just can’t get the simple stuff right! Mixing in key is so important yet some pros just can’t wrap their head around it.
Some people prefer to play red as they'll change the main volume from the sound system. I try to keep my levels just below red always, just to avoid any sort of clipping or compressing.
What software on the laptop are you using in order for the controller to work on Ella ? i have the same controller and would like to know what's the best dj software for this controller.
Hi Jonathan, virtualDJ doesn't support Pioneer XDJ-RX... you mentioned in the beginning of the video that you are using Virtual DJ... how? I'm a big fan of VirtualDJ and recently bought XDJ but disappointed that it doesnt support virtualDJ... I'm not a big fan of Rekorbox... Please suggest
MIDI mapping. If you have a license on VirtualDJ, you can go on their site and find a mapping for the XDJ-RX. Or you can do it yourself, but it will take a while.
+Damian Lewandowski In my opinion, get the Traktor Kontrol S4 MK2. It's compatible with VDJ, and you also get Traktor Pro with it for free. that's what I've done, at least.
Please, don't do that. The VU meters are completely in the red, and the master channel is too low. The channels are clipping and sending a bad signal to the speakers. For mixes, we don't use the channel faders at 80% like this. While one channel is muted, there's no reason to lower a channel that's playing solo. Otherwise, any technique is a technique as long as it keeps the rhythm of the dance floor...
"looking up and thinking 'what is this? we don't know it'"... how sad is it to expect someone to only play "the music I know". Shame on everyone like that. Nice video anyways! not my style but it's nice to learn something new
Thanks for the tip! I am 18 y/o and I always play at birthdayparties. But most of the time I mix the intro of one song together with a phrase of another one. Like in this mixtape: www.mixcloud.com/laurens-decraene/l%CE%BBmbicious-mixtape-4-/ I feel like your method is a bit to simpel... no effects (I use filter and echo together), no beatmatching. I only do this when I don't have a good version with a intro. But a good video nevertheless!
Lλmbicious I feel you but you're coming off like you know it all. Jonathan is a pro & been in the game for years. "Saying , you could do it like that " is arrogant as all hell. Nobody is gonna take a tip from you . Respect the real DJs & learn.
Never meant to be arrogant though... I'm not a native English speaker. Just wanted to give my thoughts because that's what the comment section is for, no?
sorry but that's not mxing bro. thats just playing tracks one after another and the one u mixed was awefull, cutting off the vocal part. being a club owner i will never book u. My honest opinion.
This is a beginner tutorial for DJing at weddings and the sort, not clubs. He wasn't trying to make an intricate and complex mix, he was showing how to keep music going at a party.
why? maybe because your crowd asks for it or they just happen to love that music. Mobile DJ's are always confronted with that even more when the customer asks for it :)

Thanks man I have a gig next month where I have to play mixed music and I'm used to only play house and techno 😂

unitedvibes get the Nu ark dj2go2 it is a tiny controller only 70 dollars on amazon
@@Eroicer108 Hercules Instinct is a better value option. Works perfectly with mixxx
U saved my tomorrow's gig😂❤️this is amazing
Thanks for everything you're sharing on UA-cam. I've learned alot from your videos!
Cheers from Germany!
Same me, thx

Engine Start I mix tunnel vision all the time. there's a part towards the end of the song with just the beat I usually start with that
Shut up

Nobody ever talks about mixing in phrases. It's so important! Thanks for mentioning that.
always good info from J no matter what level your at ....
using key can also help keep nice transitions between genres .... not just beat matching
Thanks for this tutorial J, really needed these tips to improve my pop mixing. Thanks again! Julian, UK.

This actually helped a lot, I have to make a demo mix to try to get a DJ gig and I needed some help on how to make one.
'Nuff Respect Every time! Recently purchased my first controller and soaking up the lessons from NYC. Keep up the great work
hello! how's your djing? What model u have ?
You are a Jedi, I’m a mere padewan, but I look at your setup and see similarities, it’s about the music not super neat wires, and perfect brand new top of the range equipment, if you can DJ, you can DJ, you can be an ‘all the gear no idea DJ’ or you can be a DJ, I wanna become ‘a DJ’
Thankyou
very simple mixing...and this is actually a perfect video....for a beginner like ME. Thank you
Where is that part of "Time of our lives" without the vocals? Can't find it... Is it another version?
Man. You been my main man go to guy for this shit since 2011. I learned my way around pioneer decks literally 80% because of you. And copped some great songs from your tutorials too.

Gavin Wohlfard You should check his old tuts. There were so many of 'em.
incredibly helpful info esp for mobile small party gigs
I was really interested in figuring out how to transition from house to other genres or just do sets with other music other than house where I can do slower transitions and UA-cam recommends this. I really worry too much about "perfect" transitions.

Wow,wow,wow. Amazing, learning a lot.
Incredibly helpful!! Thank you! 🙏🏿
Hi Johnathan, please would you mind to tell me between the denon MCX8000 and the pioneer Ddj-rzx despite the price which one is the best?
you make this look so simple and easy be for sure to be trying this!! (just getting back in the game) 💪
Is it normal that your mixer goes in red? I try to avoid it but is that needed?
Some people prefer to play red as they'll change the main volume from the sound system. I try to keep my levels just below red always, just to avoid any sort of clipping or compressing.
i love your attitude and the way you teach! awesome!
Whats the song that you played after azealia?
Good one ....learnt a lot from your teachings
It's all bout mixing mixed genres, anybody can mix house and I mean anybody
yeah, it's probably one of the easiest genre's to mix....
ye! Just release your ears :P
but still there are fuckin bangers in house
really? can i hear your easy house mix? and or "different genre mix"
Your mom can't!
Mine can't either.

Thanks dude, i learned allot and had a laugh aswell. Thanks allot
Can I work at the radio
Hi Jonathan, virtualDJ doesn't support Pioneer XDJ-RX... you mentioned in the beginning of the video that you are using Virtual DJ... how? I'm a big fan of VirtualDJ and recently bought XDJ but disappointed that it doesnt support virtualDJ... I'm not a big fan of Rekorbox... Please suggest

How much bloody gear do you have? Did you ever used any twice? Great tutorials mate.thanks
thank you very much Jonathan:)
the tracks mixed need to be same key right ?
Cường Nguyễn Mạnh not necessarily. As long as you have no clashing frequencies, if you are cutting or you are using keys that work well together
He blatantly bought a "Now that's what I call music!" Cd from Tesco's 😎
How about a video on needle working and flower arranging? Can't say I've ever heard that first song at all
+ellaskins For skype tuitions, Can I use my smart phone software while the tution classes are taking place? cause I don't have any DJ hardware.
Very well video. THX!
Great video on where great music goes to die. 😂
THANK YOU FOR EXPLANATION!!!!
Very helpful, Thank you!
Thanks a lot for your help!!!!
Cheers from NZ
practicamente mezclo dance music, y las que si eran mas pop hizo fue una transicion de selector.
Ok but some song dont stop talking how you do to change the song?
YOU SAVED MY ASS
Good mix! Now i try to mix some pop songs. What model u have on video?
It looks like a Pioneer XDJ-RX
Which dj controler do you recommend for beginning? I have only used virtual dj in my computer :)
dj weego is good but you have only 2 cd player.
+Damian Lewandowski In my opinion, get the Traktor Kontrol S4 MK2. It's compatible with VDJ, and you also get Traktor Pro with it for free.
that's what I've done, at least.
This is so brutal, that i would not recomand to take that as example
man ! this is so helpful
Please, don't do that. The VU meters are completely in the red, and the master channel is too low. The channels are clipping and sending a bad signal to the speakers. hello dj do you virtual dj? please let me know thanks mate
wow turns the unbearable to bearable very nice
do u have a patreon?
Hey what controller is this ?
Its a pioneer XDJ RX mk1
I have the same mixer, the same headphones and that same PC stand on the right lmao. are u my twin?
is this denon ?
"looking up and thinking 'what is this? we don't know it'"... how sad is it to expect someone to only play "the music I know". Shame on everyone like that.
Nice video anyways! not my style but it's nice to learn something new
ahhh no im gna have to take up needle work hah
thax man
its just dropping one for another that's not mixing its house party DJing may as well be on your phone
Learning key isn’t even important at certain times. ESP if it’s not a long mix
100000milion points for azealia banks :D
Thanks for the tip!
I am 18 y/o and I always play at birthdayparties. But most of the time I mix the intro of one song together with a phrase of another one. Like in this mixtape: www.mixcloud.com/laurens-decraene/l%CE%BBmbicious-mixtape-4-/

But a good video nevertheless!
Lλmbicious bro .. you are so new to this DJ game. my advice.. don't try to act like you're already a pro.
just giving my opinion, it's not even promotion, just wanted to give the example and see if maybe there would be some useful feedback 😉
Lλmbicious I feel you but you're coming off like you know it all. Jonathan is a pro & been in the game for years. "Saying , you could do it like that " is arrogant as all hell. Nobody is gonna take a tip from you . Respect the real DJs & learn.
also .. using effects at a birthday party is straight up uncalled for.
Never meant to be arrogant though... I'm not a native English speaker. Just wanted to give my thoughts because that's what the comment section is for, no?
The bar could just save the money and play the jukebox ffs
give me hardcore!!!
50th
Why would you mix modern day pop? it's not even music
Bartlemy .. it's called making money.
gotta pay the bills sometimes bro
I know what your saying but one must be principled when it comes to grooves..
yeah man, I couldn't personally happily DJ pop music but I can't get mad at anyone who does for that reason. Life is so expensive
but it's also undeniably fucking wank music ;)
sorry but that's not mxing bro. thats just playing tracks one after another and the one u mixed was awefull, cutting off the vocal part. being a club owner i will never book u. My honest opinion.
The easiest way to mix. There are more hard mix. I am not expert but i think it depends what kind of skill someone has.
This is a beginner tutorial for DJing at weddings and the sort, not clubs. He wasn't trying to make an intricate and complex mix, he was showing how to keep music going at a party.
still awefull
Has few helpful tips for beginners but all he's doing is cueing and cutting but at the worst time except for one good transition, awful is correct.
Lol exactly
Why would anyone want to mix pop music!?
Pick a real genre and get to work
like house? the easiest one to mix
why? maybe because your crowd asks for it or they just happen to love that music. Mobile DJ's are always confronted with that even more when the customer asks for it :)
How much bloody gear do you have? Did you ever used any twice? Great tutorials mate.thanks
@D J He has all that gear to show a wide range of possibilities on how to use it. Not every DJ is using the same stuff lol
