My partner is Thai and I am often in Thailand, as a general guideline, just avoid anything that involves a Tuk-Tuk or 'tours' in the area around the Grand Palace. Try and stick to the BST and MRT wherever possible. BKK is an amazing city and as long as you are aware of scams, there should be no issues.
We absolutely loved Bangkok. It has become one of our favourite cities world wide. We learned a valuable lesson that has helped us not only in thailand but in other countries since 😊
*Mine isn't a scam but felt like I could have easily ended up in anyone's taxi van, Booking an airport hotel shuttle bus and it had no signage on the van, the butler looking guy didn't have any logo of the hotel either and before that it wasn't the driver meeting at the located door at the airport it was a random woman i spoke to and immediately took a photo of me and then showed me out to the driver, I just felt it could have been anyone lol until I also asked a couple that got in the van after if they were going to the same hotel. A few I feel like would be scams near the airport is when the grab cancel's on you maybe I am right or wrong but after a few minutes when they ask you to cancel instead of them cancelling, I feel that might be one.*
Glad you had no real issues. I think airports are always a prime location for scams. Grab will refund you if you have a legitimate reason too, or atleast they did with us once. 😁
@@LostKnox The funny thing is, after all my travels around asia, the worst place for me was Portugal specifically Lisbon airport taxi . They did keep the meter on until we got to the hotel and then they turned it off and doubled the fare. I had it recorded and spoke with the hotel staff for the correct price, it was an airport hotel nearby anyway and he got so annoyed throwing my luggage down and giving me what i was owed back. That was actually at the designated taxi meter location too for the airport.
You are a lovely couple. So genuine and thank you for the time and trouble you have taken to tell your story. I am aware that the number one scam in Bangkok is for tuk tuk drivers tell tourists that the GRAND PALACE is "CLOSED". I warned my sister-in-law of this potential scam prior to her visit to Bangkok and lo and behold she fell for it. Her driver said that he could take her to another 'similar' Temple. She stupidly agreed to go and she as taken through various back streets where there were no tourists and she became very anxious for her safety. She was taken to a shop where she was urged to buy something. She then demanded that she be taken back to the Center of the city. She was scared. Take heed.
Aww leanne glad it worked out for you in the end, it's a bit disheartening when something like this happens, Paul and I got scammed for a lot less coming out the airport in deli, by a taxi driver, its easily done, these people know exactly what to do and say to reel you in , glad you had a happy ending, love watching 💖
You could submit this video to the local thai news. This is really in depth. It could help save their tourism. There are tons of good people and thank god you guys managed fine 👍🏼
We gave a detailed description to the thai tourism police. Unfortunately we are no longer in Thailand. We made this video hoping that it might help others not fall for the same thing. I think the more people that post about it the less it will happen 🤞 😁
Thank you for sharing your experience. Not that the many other videos on the topic aren't sincere, yours is the most authentic, comprehensive and heartfelt IMO.
Thank you. We know it is a bit of a long winded video but we want to give as much detail as possible to help others spot the red flags and how they might be able to sort the situation if they find themselves in it 😊
Bless you both, you both are not stupid, these people pray on westerners and it’s lucky you both had the sense to sort it, I’ve been scammed before, they are very good at what they do, happy journeys guys xxxx
Google will tell you if a temple is closed or not. If someone tells you its closed, they're lying. Even in the worst case scenario, you can directly ask the staff of that temple if its closed or not.
I litterally went trough the exact same tuk tuk tour and unfortunately i bought a suit for 10000 baht. When i realized i got scammed i called the tourist police just to ask if the scammers can (and/ or will) do anything with the information i gave them ( where i stay). They wanted me to go with them to the shop to get my money back, but im very sure i'll get nothing back as to i have no contract and the contract i signed said no money back. I am travelling solo and honestly am not feeling comfortable even picking up the suit anymore. Advice on what to do next would help out allot, thanks in advance
I would go with the tourist police. All the tickets we had said no refund also. The situation may feel uncomfortable but they really helped us. We didn't think we would get any of ours back either but we did. It is worth a try. Worst case is you don't get your money back. But there is a chance you will 😊
My first visit to Thailand was 24 years ago. They tried the tuk tuk scam on me. I knew it is dodgy when the guy said 20 Baht for the tour. So I went with him to 2-3 shops and got bored I told him I have enough, I did catch a taxi and left him. I was not rude or aggressive (not recommended in Thailand anyway) but firm. Of course I could not or can not dodge things like double pricing but I try my best. At least I steal something from Thailand, my caring, beautiful wife (married for 20 years).
Guys you seem like very good and honest people, the problem with that is we don't live in a good and honest world. Alot of bad people out here, all over the world. Always feel comfortable with saying no thank you and walk away. I'm planning my first trip to Bangkok soon and I'm doing ALOT of research on prices, transportation and especially scam which you should do all the time. Scammers will look for sweet people like yourselves to take advantage of.
A little trick when you are a foreigners in a foreign country and a local offer to take you anywhere take some pictures with him if he's a scramer he won't want his picture taken
You guys literally come off as naive and ditsy within the first minute of speaking and im english. I would see you as a victim too if i was a scammer. Your fella needs to be more dominant and assertive fr.
We were super naive. It has been 9 months now since the incident and we have definitely changed since then. We don't fall for anything like this anymore and are much less likely to take people at face value.
Sorry to hear about this. It does happen a lot in Bangkok, these confidence tricksters are very clever and it’s not your fault at all. I’m glad you contacted the Thai tourist police, they are very helpful. We jumped in a tuktuk once as we wanted to go to China town. The driver said it was closed and he tried to take us to his brothers restaurant and also a diamond shop. We said no and got out of the tuktuk and walked away. We try not to use that form of transport anymore. Please don’t let this incident spoil your Thailand holiday.
We absoloutly loved Thailand and can't wait to go back again, especially Bangkok. This experience made us wiser and now we are more careful, thanks for your kind words 🙏
Wow...what an experience. I used to live there in Thailand - so I feel for you guys. I was in India last week (8 days New Dehli and Agra), Late 2 days from missed flight, and I had a tour guide take me to all the temples sites - they took me all the unwanted stores - even a low-key massage place. I stood my ground and said no (as experience traveler I KNEW what's up) I didn't even go to the massage place. Sketchy. I had two open days left for Agra (Taj Mahal), and needed consolidation with no hiccups - got it done. Sometimes you got to weigh out your options. Imagine going in to get a basic massage at an unknown/unlisted massage parlor then a girl tried to mount you after. And they are asking for prostitute money even if you didn't ask for anything else. RED FLAGS everywhere! The tour cost me double than normal. Fine...the experience is what I'm after in the limited time. No point in getting lost or catch the wrong train. Best to have some sort of guide. Afterwards I found out a few places my driver didn't pay for my ticket to a few sites and kept the money. Told me to take pictures outside. He was a nice guy, BUT like all scammers-untrust worthy. He even contacted me days later in message app that he lost the tip I gave him and needed money for medicine for his daughter. Gotta laugh at the situation. (Blocked him)
If we had known about this before it had happened we would not have fallen for it. We are just grateful now that we managed to learn a lesson as it has saved us a few times since.
@@LostKnox Hard lesson to grow and learn from. The tourist police are a Godsend if contacted and really are on your side. Since a few are expats themselves and know every scam well. Safe travels - I'll be back to Thailand in August, next stop is Dubai.
Hi guys - this sounds like such an ordeal. Glad you managed to get some of it back (hopefully all of it by now). We actually had someone tell us a temple was closed yesterday, funnily enough. We just walked right past him as we've heard this so many times! There are nice legit tuktuk drivers out there, too! Hope the rest of your Thailand trip has been GREAT! 😀
My family too encountered very similar scams some years ago. A woman who spoke very good English, followed us from one end of the road to the other end just to get us visit a temple because it was a special Buddha Day ...we shook her off after a while.
Gutted for you. I’m glad that I’m quite cynical and question everything. To be honest though, they’re so good at what they do. I’ve been scammed a few times but nothing in the realms of £1000 (thankfully). You’ll live and learn though and come back better.
Hello, we were unfortunately scammed the exact same way beginning of last week and we don't know what to do to get our money back. The tourism police wasn't very helpful, as they state that it can't be proven that the tuk tuk drivers and the other actors work together with the TAT or the suit shop. Do you have any recommendations on what we could and should do? Thank you very much in advance. We really appreciated your video.
Hello David. We are sorry that they were not as helpful in your case as they were in ours. The only thing I could recommend with the tourism police is to email them with an in depth description of the whole chain of event from start to finish. That is what we did and they called us back the next day. Their email is 1155callcenter@gmail.com If that gets you nowhere the only other thing I cam recommend is to contact your bank and launch a disputed transaction claim. The bank may be able to reverse the payment are give you your money back that way. All the best and I really hope it works out for you 🙏
Theres really a lot of scam in the world, when i was changing money long times ago, in their office i count myself, three times, it was 150 bills, but when i count again in my hotel room is barely 100 bills, i count over and over, the bills missing like 40+, i dunno how?
Two seconds after leaving the station, told the palace was "shut". Replied "Really??". Just kept walking to the open palace. Then went to the wonderful reclining Buddha. Kept smiling and saying no to the Tuk Tuk drivers all day. Had a good time. The train was great, and I enjoyed the walking even though I am not young. Thanks UA-cam and Google Maps! 😸
Glad you had a good time. We returned to the reclining bhudda 2 days ago and were not surprised to see people trying to tell us it was closed again. Enjoy your trip 😊
@@LostKnox Cheers! When I go to a country, I watch YT vids (including yours - now SUBBED) before I go, get a sim card at the airport, constantly look at Google maps, and say "no" to people all day long. Works for me!
Those guys are a plague in Bangkok right now. As soon as someone comes up asking what you are doing today I always say I’m looking for a floating market then continue walking laughing hilariously to myself. The look of pure joy/confusion on their face is priceless.
Four of us went to the grand palace and a guy came up to us and asked where we were going told us the palace was closed luckily two policemen came walking by and this guy disappeared we asked them if the palace was closed they then took us to the entrance and spoke to us in very good English and told us we were about to be scammed they told us to always be aware there are so many scams going on in Thailand.
This is just simple advice that is very helpful for anyone. Before you travel to your country of destination, please do some research about the place, any possible scams that you may encounter, and how to avoid them. If you do, you are good to go.
Ok you are new to Bangkok, this kind of scam happens a lot near the kings castle, they say it’s close but it’s not, then they suggest something else that is 10 times more expensive than usually it is. Another lesson you can learn is don’t take any advice from tuk tuk guys or taxi drivers, any attractions that they suggest will be 10 times more expensive than normal. Taxi drivers at night also like to not turn the meter and overcharge a lot. Apart from taxi drivers and tuk tuk drivers, Thailand is very safe
@@LostKnox yes it’s an amazing city, I love it there as well, next time you go to a new country do some research on Google “common scams in …” or “what to watch for in…” I,ve found a warning about taxi drivers and almost fell in to the tuk tuk scam as well. good luck on your travels, your videos are nice 🙂
Thank you. We are going to a new country this Saturday and have already been researching the common scams. Thank you for your concern and advice. We will not be falling for it again 😊
Great video thank you. I am sorry to hear you have been through this. Tourism is an important income for people in Thailand and the Tourism Police take any scams very seriously and will crack down on them very hard. My wife's family are Thai and they are lovely people.
Are you aware that the scammers pay various authorities to get into the locations to scam you?😀 I once called a taxi right at the front of the king's palace. I noticed during the ride that the meter was ticking over far too quickly. I suddenly told him to stop and I paid him a certain amount of money. I kept walking up to the next corner while he was stuck in heavy traffic and I told a policeman at the next corner about it, and I pointed at the taxi and said he was a scammer because the meter wasn't working. The policeman then walked up to him and then opened his car door and apprehended him. 😀
Sorry you got scammed, but this is one of the oldest scams going. When i first went to Thailand 16 years ago people were talking about this and other scams you may encounter while your in Thailand 🇹🇭 on TripAdvisor and other travel forums. Back then people would recommend travel agents and tour operators, im sure thats still the case.
@@LostKnox seem like some people only watch the youtube videos of the great stuff you may encounter, ive just watched another video of a whole bus full of tourist getting ripped off with an age old scam, even the guy filming knew it was a scam but still ended up allowing himself to get scammed and paying these low life scammers.
Thank you for sharing this. @@LostKnox That’s awesome that you got the money back. You also helped others and hopefully this scam has stoped as its so not right. Yer I know the feeling Bangkok is an amazing place and I can’t wait to see more of it. Are you still travelling or have you gone back home?
@@joegiccominato7402 we have gone back home. But only temporarily. We had a few things to sort out back home. We will be back travelling in a few months 😊
I’m always suspicious when someone approaches me. You can’t be so trusting when people approach you. And I like to get a couple quotes. I don’t like being ripped off, and I have a few times but most I’ve lost is about $10.
The Thai people need to be mindful of this bc this could deter tourism, which is @ 18% of their economy. There's also karmic consequences for treating people like this. I learned about all the scams before I got to Thailand. I avoided all tuk tuks at all costs. There was one man who was trying to be playful by tapping my arm with whatever was in his hand after I said no twice already. I gave him the dirtiest look. With that being said, you two are too nice! Sorry this happened to you.
We realise we were completely naive. We have not fallen for anything like this since and research scams beforehand. Generally if anyone approaches us in the streets we don't entertain them. We have since been back to Thailand multiple times and have spent around 5 months in the country in total. We really love it there. We are actually planning on heading back next month. 😊
@@LostKnox I got ripped off as well via being overcharged for items like clothing and jewelry but it's just a few USD no biggie. I don't appreciate it but I figured they need it more than I do. Overall the Thai people are very nice and honest. It's just the few bad seeds that give the country a bad look. I know a guy who lives here (I'm in Thailand now) and he says on the news they talked about tourists who got charged like 600k bahts for a tuk tuk ride. They refused so that's when the dilemma ensues. That's just ridiculous! Glad you're all good with Thailand now. I really enjoy my time here. I just wish it wasn't so darn hot!
Do you not check before travelling to any country about possible scams, you really should make yourself aware before you go. This particular scam is one of the oldest in the book. I am glad you managed to claw back most of your money but pease you own it to yourselves to do your due diligence on all your travel destinations.
Ever since this incident we do research on every country we go to. We were generally just quite trusting and naive. We won't be falling for anything like this again.
I completely agree. We learned a valuable lesson that has protected us since. We absolutely loved Thailand and stayed there for 3 months. We cannot wait to come back 😁
We would never want this video to put anybody off visiting Thailand. It is a beautiful country that we absolutely love. Just be aware of people trying to take advantage 😊
Sorry you were scammed, My question is, If you paid with a card, could you not go back to your bank and stop the payment? Maybe I didn't understand how the payment was made, here in the US we have recourse of going to our lender and reporting scams to get a refund. There are scammers everywhere, it sucks that you had to go through all that. thank you for sharing your story, I hope others learn like I did since I am traveling to Thailand soon.
The money was taken off of my debit card rather than my credit card. Most banks in England have now signed up to a scheme that guarantees to refund fraudulent payments, however the bank that this card belonged to has not yet signed up to this scheme. If it had been taken off of my other bank card or my credit card the refund process would have been so much easier. Don't let this put you off your trip to Thailand though. We fell in love with thailand and even Bangkok. All I would say is be wary on anyone that is over friendly. Thai people in general are quite shy and very polite 😊
@@LostKnox Thank you for the super fast answer, I am going for sure, It has been a dream of mine since I have been very young and read about it. (now 55). I hope it all worked out for you, I didn't see an update on what you actually got to use or refund of the tickets you were given.

the number on scam when driving people from the airport to there hotel in Thailand, i understand how if its your first time how you can be pressured if you don't know the prices of anything but never trust any of these people, as a foreigner you are seen as a walking atm for a lot of these people, book your own stuff on the street at "tour booking place " or after some research

You should have called Thailand Tourist Police at the beginning. They will come to you immediately. E-mail to claim a refund is a longest process and not recommended.
We did call the tourism police immediately. But because I don't speak Thai they asked me to send an email. The tourism police were great and we got 70% of our money back within a week. 👍
They did. Someone called me back the next day. We arranged an interview with the scammers and got most of it back. We didn't know it was a scam straight away but if we encounter any problems again we will call them immediately 👍
Don't let your guard down when people are too willing to help you. My friend has been scammed too by a guy who said he was an ex policemen and working as a chief security for a mall. Then he start telling us about Lucky Buddha and the scam goes on from there. So if someone shows you an ID card claiming he was a policeman or ex cop and start telling you about Lucky Buddha and buying gems stones or jewellery at a special discount. Get away fast.

To be fair the Tuk Tuk didn't charge us extra. It was the travel agents pretending to be a government run organisation. The Tuk Tuk driver agreed on a price but took us to businesses that he would get a share of any sales.
Why no one does their search beforehand... It's a well known scam, same as the patpong scam.. Never got scammed in Thailanded, never, I have been going there for 7y

Great information! And super glad things reached the climax just like the way a good independent film would end.
Google will tell you if a temple is closed or not. If someone tells you its closed, they're lying. Even in the worst case scenario, you can directly ask the staff of that temple if its closed or not.
Good advice 👍
That's a standard scam, the temple is closed!! I fell for it too but didn't pay him a baht.
I'm glad we realised it was a scam when we did and managed to get most of it back
I litterally went trough the exact same tuk tuk tour and unfortunately i bought a suit for 10000 baht.
But there is a chance you will 😊
@@LostKnox thanks!
We completely agree. We learned a hard lesson that day and believe us it won't happen again 😁
Two big Thumbs up for honesty and warning others.
I know a few people this has happened to. It’s easy especially on your first time. Thanks for sharing!
A little trick when you are a foreigners in a foreign country and a local offer to take you anywhere take some pictures with him if he's a scramer he won't want his picture taken
Good advice. Thank you 😊
You guys literally come off as naive and ditsy within the first minute of speaking and im english. I would see you as a victim too if i was a scammer. Your fella needs to be more dominant and assertive fr.
We were super naive. It has been 9 months now since the incident and we have definitely changed since then. We don't fall for anything like this anymore and are much less likely to take people at face value.
Thank you for sharing this unfortunate scam, you have educated many of us who never heard or encounter this type scam. Thank you thank you thank you!
@@LostKnox ❤️
Thank you! I feel like we needed the experience 😅 it's definitely made us wiser! We are still loving Thailand so far and have extended our stay 😊
Thanks for sharing. Im in Phuket with my family now and do plan on getting to Bangkok in a couple of weeks.
Hope you have an amazing trip 😊
Simple rule is never purchase anything from people who come up to you in a public place.😀
Yep. It's a good rule 👍
My family too encountered very similar scams some years ago. A woman who spoke very good English, followed us from one end of the road to the other end just to get us visit a temple because it was a special Buddha Day ...we shook her off after a while.
I'm glad you didn't fall for it. We were very tired and silly.
It wo t happen again
Gutted for you. I’m glad that I’m quite cynical and question everything. To be honest though, they’re so good at what they do. I’ve been scammed a few times but nothing in the realms of £1000 (thankfully). You’ll live and learn though and come back better.
Please report TOURIST POLICE is call (1155).
We did. They were great and helped us get a refund 👍
Their email is 1155callcenter@gmail.com
If that gets you nowhere the only other thing I cam recommend is to contact your bank and launch a disputed transaction claim. The bank may be able to reverse the payment are give you your money back that way.
All the best and I really hope it works out for you 🙏
@@LostKnox thank you very much! We will try that.
We wish you all the best. Keep having fun travelling ❤️
Theres really a lot of scam in the world, when i was changing money long times ago, in their office i count myself, three times, it was 150 bills, but when i count again in my hotel room is barely 100 bills, i count over and over, the bills missing like 40+, i dunno how?
We have learned to be more careful whenever we do anything now
Two seconds after leaving the station, told the palace was "shut".
We are so glas that someone was there to help you prevent this.
We hope you had a great time in Thailand 🇹🇭 😀
thank you so much for the warming. I really like that you guys talking all the detail and process. I would definitely keep it in mind.
We are glad that it may come to help people. 😁
I cycled across Thailand and the first number i put in my phone was the tourist police number, luckily I never had to use it
We didn't even know they existed until that day. They were so helpful 👍
This is just simple advice that is very helpful for anyone. Before you travel to your country of destination, please do some research about the place, any possible scams that you may encounter, and how to avoid them. If you do, you are good to go.
Could not agree more. This is what we now do everywhere we go 😊
Lesson learned, don't pull out Google maps as soon as you arrive. It's like a flag saying you're a mark to con men. Nice informative vlog though.
Yes we have learned a lot in the past few weeks and will continue to do so moving forward 😁
Yes we learned a valuable lesson that day. We still love bangkok though 😁
I'm in Bangkok now. These scammers seem more active than usual.
All I would say is just be aware of overly friendly people approaching you.
Other than that enjoy Bangkok. It is an amazing city ❤️
Great video thank you. I am sorry to hear you have been through this. Tourism is an important income for people in Thailand and the Tourism Police take any scams very seriously and will crack down on them very hard. My wife's family are Thai and they are lovely people.
We agree. We absolutely love Thailand and the Thai people. We are actually back in Thailand again now for our 3rd time 😊
Are you aware that the scammers pay various authorities to get into the locations to scam you?😀 I once called a taxi right at the front of the king's palace. 😀
It doesn't surprise me. There is corruption everywhere in the world. But there is also so many good people too 😁
Im going to thailand soon and will NOT get anywhere near a tuk tuk. Thx for the information
We have used them in other countries but wouldn't use them in Thailand again
wow, what a story. I'm glad you got a happy ending

I heard about a variation of this scam where you buy entrance tickets from an imposter
This happens also. People will wait outside temples and charge entry fees to temples that are free to enter 😬
God bless you for having the guts to post this. 99.9% of thais are lovely people but thius stuff does happen. best wishes
Thank you. We absolutely agree. We love Thailand so much and the Thai people. But in every country people need to keep their guard up 😊
Thank you for sharing....it will help so many people
The Thai people need to be mindful of this bc this could deter tourism, which is @ 18% of their economy.

Thai people in general are quite shy and very polite 😊

the number on scam when driving people from the airport to there hotel in Thailand, i understand how if its your first time how you can be pressured if you don't know the prices of anything but never trust any of these people, as a foreigner you are seen as a walking atm for a lot of these people, book your own stuff on the street at "tour booking place " or after some research

@@LostKnox Interesting! I'm sure Thai travel police can speak English or can find translator.
