I am a 100% metalhead but am not ashamed to say I love ABBA. Arrival was the first album of theirs that I got on release (on cassette) and it remains a favourite. The title track is an unsung (no pun intended) gem. But the cream of ABBA for me is Eagle, on The Album, stick that one on and crank it up…it’s an absolute masterpiece!!🤘🏻
Sometimes old compilation albums include surprising gems. In the 80s, a friend's parents had one that included the Undertones' single Teenage Kicks, which I'd never heard before. Fantastic.
Rockin' Robin was performed by the Jackson 5, but it was written, performed by, and released by Bobby Day in 1958. Just a little history for you. Keep up the good work Phil !!
War and Gentle Giant two of my favourites. Currently working my way through the entire catalogue of McCoy Tyner. Such an accomplished keyboard player who eschewed the electric piano.
Nothing wrong with Abba!…beautifully crafted commercial songs, many with a subtle melancholy feel, wonderful harmonies and arrangements…Now I admit I love my prog rock, blues rock, indy rock, a bit of folk rock, 70’s singer songwriters etc etc but there’s still plenty of room for well written “pop” ☺️
Alright Mate , playlist looks like this : David Bowie ' Rock and Roll Star ' ( Box set ). Faces ' At The BBC, ' ( Box Set ). Ian Hunter ' Welcome To The Club ' ( Vinyl Double ). Whitesnake ' Ready an Willin ' ( CD ). IQ ' Road Of Bones ' ( CD ). I look forward to your Bucks Fizz Album breakdown after ABBA!!!!. Take Care as always.
I’ve just bought tickets to see Deacon Blue in April and now I’ve bought their “ Legacy edition “ 2Cd version of their classic debut album “ Raintown “ and I’m so pleased that I did as this edition has been remastered and it’s like Wow ! Sounds really fantastic on my decent HiFi much better than the original cd copy that I’ve already got and I would say that it’s one of the best sounding albums that I’ve ever heard .And 8 don’t say that lightly ! The music speaks for itself and is just wonderful . I’m really looking forward now to seeing Deacon Blue in April.
Good afternoon and happy Sunday "funday" Phil. I just was turned on to a late 60's and 70's UK solo artist that I had never heard of before and one that I think would make for a good/great forgotten/overlooked segment on your channel...Terry Reid "Seed of Memory" and "River". Although Terry was from the UK, these albums first appeared stateside on ABC Records and Atlantic Records respectively and both are available on CD. Thoughts...
Hi Phil, Some eclectic new year listening. Richard Thompson - Ship To Shore, Bill Ryder Jones - Ichyd Da, Mott The Hoople Live 30th Anniversary, Nazareth - Loud And Proud Anthology and Chopin Complete Nocturnes.
Great stuff again, Nine Below Zero - I saw them supporting Eric Clapton at the NEC also on the bill were ZZ Top & Joe Cocker, It was a Charity concert,
Some interesting stuff there Phil, I never got to hear Andy Mackays album as I was more interested in Manzaneras solo stuff at the time, however, I will try and get hold of the Eddie Riff album now. I love ABBA too by the way, perfect pop, I always loved the exsquisite vocal harmonies and production. I been listening to: Motorhead - No Sleep Till Hammersmith (a fine live album) Loop - A Gilded Eternity ( Hawkwind influenced space rock from the 80's) The Carpenters - Best of ( vocal perfection from Karen plus a favourite guitar solo from Tony Peluso on Goodbye to love). Cheers
Great show, started listening to the Isley Brothers following your recommendations, maybe interesting to do a show of artists from different genres, I would recommend Mando Diao, Nothing But Thieves still the greatest UK band, Bad Omens and LEAP. This week mainly been buying and playing Oceans of Slumber
Hi Phil, Crazy Crazy Nights sounds a great compilation. Some great ones came out in the 80's, Hot City Nights and American Heartbeat spring to mind. The record company would generally put one of two tracks on that didn't fit the genre at all just to promote the band. American Heartbeat is an AOR compilation but has dance hall days by wang chung and I got you by split enz on it! Some great choices in your list Phil, thank you.
Phil, I was 16 when I bought the triple live album Isle of Wight. I could not listen to the Miles Davis track " call it anyrhing". 10 years later I was a big fan and I love the track now. 😂
Great play list! I'd forgotten about NINE BELOW ZERO.🥶Cool band. I was introduced to them via their appearance on The Young Ones TV show, albeit many years after it's original broadcast. Take care!🎸
Great list Phil. Here is mine: Gentry Blue-Fragments Six by Six-Beyond Shadow Land Kings X-Dogman EchoVerse-Whispers Between Worlds Robin Trower-Bridge of Sighs Judas Priest-Sad Wings of Destiny Queensryche-Empire
Thanks for the update on what you’re listening to. How about AM.PM by Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera. Starts off with Blue Skies and takes off from there. Great stuff. Rock on!
Lots of good stuff you are listening to! ABBA's Arrival is excellent, as is every other album in the group's catalogue. "Dancing Queen" - as ubiquitous as it is - was never one of my top favorites; I like it, but there are dozens of other ABBA songs that I love even more. That WAR album is fantastic. Like one commenter below, I wasn't aware of that deluxe version until I saw this video. The Gentle Giant story was amusing - Octopus was my first GG purchase; I enjoyed the album, but not enough to pull it out frequently at the time. It was my second GG purchase, the band's eponymous debut, that truly hooked me - played the album to death, and subsequently became a huge fan. As time went on, I grew to love Octopus to pieces; it is now my 3rd favorite GG album, with "Knots" - inspired by the R.D. Laing book of the same name (and a cool read, I think) - having always been my personal favorite from it, and a top 10 Gentle Giant track for me. The Doors' self-titled debut is a bona fide classic, and my favorite from the group, while ELP's Works, Vol. 1 is good; I love Emerson's concerto, and Lake's "C'est la vie" is gorgeous. Caravan? The Doobie Brothers? Yes and yes. Great albums. District 97 is cool, and I'm into a fair amount of the names listed on that Crazy Crazy Nights compilation. I will have to check out that orchestral DP album, and likewise for the Andy Mackay one. Great!
Hi Phil on my Christmas break I was listening to my no1 band Deep Purple Stormbringer first album I record on my tape ,Riverside,Anathema and Barclay JH Live 1973. Can you do any reviews on Kansas and Robbie Stainhard with your lovely wife? You probably know why? All the best in NY2025 for both of you from Polish Messi from 🇨🇦 Canada
I agree with what you say about Abba. I have the box set with all the albums, and the two I love most are 'The Visitors' and the post box set 'Voyage.' Anyway, I digress. I've just listened to Catfish Rising by Jethro Tull, for the first time in a long time, and I think it's magnificent. Also been playing Feel no fret by AWB on heavyweight clear vinyl (a Xmas present) which is a stunning collection of songs. I enjoyed your review of the Jim Capaldi box set of his last few albums, but I wonder if you know of the Open your heart box set of his first three island albums. I bought it wanting 'better sound quality ' than my old albums, and it was worth it. Great sound quality on these three CDs.
Hi Phil! I bought a color vinyl ABBA box set a while back. It's great music. WAR are a deep dive for me. Please do a review of them. This week I have been spinning Quiet Riot and Slade.
Hi Phil another great video. Going through my collection alphabetically & chronologically for each group/artist currently on J & listening to the Jam box set. As the collection is currently on ~1700 I reckon it will take 2 years! Keep up the good work!
Works is in my collection that I will have to replay Keith used to live near me in Sussex about that time he also had a fire from badly wired equipment
This week I have been listening to: AC/DC - Live At River Plate DCD/BRD Black Sabbath - Hand Of Doom 8LP Box-Set Average White Band - AWB 50th Anniversary 15CD box-set Blue Öyster Cult - 50th Anniversary Live: First Night TLP / 50th Anniversary Live: Third Night BRD / Imaginos CD David Coverdale - White Snake CD / Northwinds LP Def Leppard - Live At The Leadmill CD/BRD Cats In Space - Diamonds: The Best Of LP
Also, just to say the Hand Of Doom picture discs were the best quality in terms of listening I have ever experienced. They were all just as good as the original vinyls I purchased in the 70's & 80's - definitely a great buy for me.
My playlist for the week is due to a "vinyl splurge" in an antiques shop yesterday where I picked up 10 albums for £40! Roadmaster - "Hey World" (1979) - a US AOR band from that time, probably the first vinyl import album I ever bought from good old Quicksilver Records in Reading! Johnny Diesel And The Injectors - S/T (1989) - I believe they're an Australian hard rock 'n' roll band, a "blind purchase" but at £4 it's worth a shot. The Blues Band - "Ready" (1980) - the first album I've ever owned by them but I know a lot of their stuff with Paul Jones on vocal & harmonica, of course. The Alvin Lee Band - "Free Fall" (1980) - I am already a big Ten Years After fan, I know a lot less about Alvin Lee's solo stuff but, again, worth a shot at £4. Judie Tzuke - "Road Noise" (1982) - I had this double live album on vinyl many years ago but never got around to replacing it on CD, looking forward to playing it again. Medicine Head - "Two Man Band" (1976) - I know their first couple of albums but not this one, but with Tony Ashton on keyboards it has to be worth a pop. Trooper - "Knock 'em Dead Kid" (1977) - the title track was on every CBS / Sounds compilation album, I have this on CD but I also had it on vinyl so nice to have it once again. Pat Travers - "Heat In The Street" (1978) - again, got in on CD in a box set but another classic returned as vinyl to my collection. Pat Travers - "Makin' Magic" (1977) - ditto. Kayak - "Phantom Of The Night" (1978) - I know of them as a Dutch symphonic rock band, I thought it was worth a pop at £4.
What a fabulous haul! Makin Magic is a great album and that Trooper song Knock em Dead I have the same compilation. The Judie Tzuke live album is superb as well. I don’t know the Alvin Lee album, perhaps Cherry Red should do a box set of Alvin Lee solo albums?
Did not know about that WAR boxset...visited my usual haunts & now I see a LIVE IN JAPAN 1974 2-cd set is due out in February 2025. They're a great live band...
Lucky enough to have seen ABBA live in ‘79 at Bingley Hall, and last year the ABBA Voyage show which is a quite thrilling experience. Their albums contain some real gems apart from the familiar singles.
I’ve been listening to the new album “ Some Dreams” just released by A Flock of Seagulls and I have to say it’s really enjoyable ,even better than expected and I have give big compliments to Mike Score for the fantastic production on this new album . It sounds fantastic on my decent Hi Fi , as does another album that I recently took a chance on . Sisters of Mercy kind of passed me by when they were making new music but I’ve bought the remastered Cd “ Floodland “ by the band which Jim Steinman had some involvement and I’m really enjoying it and pleased that I bought it
Hi Phil. I was thinking about your piece on music genres and so I have been listening to Fairport Convention, What We Did On Our Holidays, and Unhalfbricking. Apart from the fact that one of this country's greatest female vocalists Sandy Denny sings on both, they seem to defy genre listing. I have also been listening to Ian Hunter's latest albums, following your recommendation! As well as some older Mott music.
ABBA was my fathers favorite band. So I bought their box set. Going to go grab it. Melodies....Chillicothe -Ohio - 6 weeks at Recording Workshop. We had a lecture about ABBA. I bought Tommy Bolin fusion Billy ? Cobham ? Andy Gibb 4 LP Box. Just had to listen to this kid's music. So sad. He was a rich kid. Gun & Gurvitz Brothers. I was listening non stop to Kiss's trilogy "Destroyer - Love Gun" Hooligan. Week 2
Phil - Does your Deep Purple collection include the two albums by the band Warhorse? It was Nic Simper's band in 1970 - '73. Rick Wakeman played with them for awhile early on but had left for the Strawbs before their first album.
Nothing wrong at all with ABBA.....indeed it's Ritchie Blackmore's favourite band - he's on the record a number of times professing his love and respect for ABBA. If Ritchie likes them, then they must be good! 🙂
Albums played this week: 1) Gillian Welch @ David Rawlings- Woodland 2) Joni Mitchell- Hissing of summer lawns 3) Tori Amos- From the choirgirl hotel 4) Led Zeppelin- BBC Sessions 5) Rory Gallagher- Photo Finish 6) Mark Lanegan - Whisky for the holy ghost.
This week i have been listening to, Stone The Crows - Transmissions 4cd+2dvd, Chicken Shack - The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions 3cd, Savoy Brown - Songs from the road cd+dvd. Skin Alley - To pagman and beyond 1970, Tonton Macoute - Same 1971, East Of Eden - Same 1971, Catapilla - Changes 1972, ALVIN LEE and CO - Academy of music, New York 1975. Regards András.

ABBA "Arrival" was my first album, though to be fair it was my mother who bought it. I played it to death as it was, for a while, the only record in the collection...I remember that "Dum Dum Diddle" and its lyrics was panned at the time. I'm a Doobies/Michael McDonald fan and I really like Liberté, which was recorded without McDonald though he was (and still is) a member of the Doobies when it was recorded. I Love Michael McDonald' latest album Wide Open. If you can say "latest" as it was released 2017. I should check out Nine Below Zero. Until recently Mark Feltham was , to me, the guy who played harmonica on Talk Talk albums and I didn't know he is an original member of the band and still a member. I wonder if I'll ever be a fan of olives or Motley Crue. Probably not LOL.
Mr. Phill, forgive me, but, maybe because English is not my first language, I did not understand which version of Octopus by Giant you like most. The original one or that new remix that you bought? Thanks in advance
Too Fast for Love did NOT need to be remixed but that was the blessing and curse of the "majors"...they had the money to support the bands (promotion, etc) but they also used that "leverage" to get what they wanted...
This week amingst the many, Abba - The Album. The Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach. Focus - Hamburger Concerto. Black Sabbath - Vol4. The Stone Roses - Self Titled. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing. Steleye Span - Wintersmith. Many more.
Nothing wrong with listening to ABBA Phil, the songwriting and musicianship are top notch.
The Visitors is a superb album.

I will have to check out that orchestral DP album, and likewise for the Andy Mackay one.
Great!

Hi Phil! I bought a color vinyl ABBA box set a while back. It's great music.

This week I have been spinning Quiet Riot and Slade.
Slade ! Good one ☝️
Hi Phil another great video. Going through my collection alphabetically & chronologically for each group/artist currently on J & listening to the Jam box set. As the collection is currently on ~1700 I reckon it will take 2 years! Keep up the good work!

Been listening to the Deccan Traps CD thanks to yourself, and revisiting some Buckcherry 😊
Proving your point Phil Never mind the genre it's the music! Yes I have the ABBA box as well! 👍
Funny...I was on the phone, came back, heard you mention three songs and knew you were talking about Crazy Nights.

They're a great live band...
The Darkness come on stage at their concerts to the ABBA tune “ Arrival “ . A track that has also been covered by Mike Oldfield
Some Canadian content is always good!
Lucky enough to have seen ABBA live in ‘79 at Bingley Hall, and last year the ABBA Voyage show which is a quite thrilling experience. Their albums contain some real gems apart from the familiar singles.

Glad to report: NO ABBA in my playlist!
Hi Phil, have you heard if there is any news about a Jess Roden reissue?
Eagle on ABBA The Album is very proggy.
Hi Phil, don't know if you've heard the music of Beth Hart, a fantastic singer, songwriter and musician, blues to rock to jazz and amazing talent!
'Arrival' is a great album
