Some of you caught it, but I misspoke on the model of turntable - it is a Technics SL-1700 MKII (not a 1200). And I made my one mistake for the year so early this year!!!! LOL

So cool! I bought that model way back in 1981 thru the navy exchange catalog. I loved it. Direct drive, auto-return. I bought it tax free. it was somewhere around $200.00 new back then. But It's hard to say. I purchased my whole set up thru the catalog including a Marantz receiver AR15 speakers and a Teac cassette deck for around $700.00

Just discovered your channel and really enjoying your down home approach! I’ve been collecting LPs since the early 80s and have a well curated collection of about 2000, plus numerous CDs and 45s. I just recently cataloged all of them in Discogs and have about 500 for sale in a consignment table at a local record store. It was a great experience bringing the collection back to a reasonable size. I still have some duplicates to weed out however. Now, back to watching your videos! Happy new year!

    Hi Melinda,
Phillip has such an accurate grasp on reality, and gives great advice. As I said before, record collecting IS an addiction and while finding a nice copy of a sought after pressing of a particular record at bargain pricing can boost the feeling of pride of ownership, it is not necessarily indicative of real musical passion.
I do think current economics plays a major part in the whole situation and explains the resurgence of CD as an indication that vinyl pricing has gone out of control, whether it be new or used.
Selective buying as suggested by Phillip might give you some things to ponder over in 2025, as you also need to factor in the cost of cartridge replacement when the time comes, which will probably be sooner than expected.
Wishing you both a Happy New Year.

  • @mattlupu152

I believe both of you are spot on when you say there are other factors when comparing prices from the 60 and 70's with today. It drives me crazy when people say with inflation it cost the same. There were less options back then and now you have a lot more things that eat your money away( internet, cable, cell phones, computers,ect.). That is not even counting wages. It is easy to cherry pick stats to make a point. It is so nice finding an unexpected deal.

I feel like our expectations are different today. When I was a kid in the 70s it was a big deal if a new record came in the house. Our family collection was *tiny* by most standards. Could say the same about cars, my parents usually owned second-hand sedans but these days everyone thinks they need a loaded, V8 SUV. I dont really love the price of full retail vinyl but I don't buy that much of it. Yet i *will* splurge on an audiophile pressing if it's something I *really* want.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  15 днів тому +5

I agree with you. We didn't have a lot of records either. I played the same albums over and over again. That's why certain artists and albums are so nostalgic. We used to spend a lot more time with each album. Excellent point. Thank you and happy new year. 🤗♥️

A week or two behind you, I finally got to see a preview of A Complete Unknown. The IMAX showing in London was introduced by 3 of the stars in person - Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), Edward Norton (Pete Seger) and, of course, Timothée Chalamet (Bob Dylan). It was so exciting to see them all in person! I thought the movie was fantastic - they managed to include so many people and incidents that are well known from Dylan's backstory; many in minor or entirely non-speaking roles were easily recognizable - eg John Hammond, Tom Wilson, Roy Hallee, Odetta.
There are a couple of albums you might enjoy that feature many of the artists who influenced Dylan back in the day - 'Bob Dylan's Greenwich Village', Vols 1 & 2, (LTEV 360 & LTEV 373). They include Pete Seger, Woodie Guthrie, Lead Belly, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Dave Van Ronk, Odetta, Joan Baez, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and many others who have led me to a great appreciation of Blues and Folk music, just through exploring Dylan's early influences.

I have a mint condition single-owner SL-1600 MKII (Fully Automatic) and it is my #1 turntable. It has isolation that is amazing. You can pound on the plinth or the table it sits on and NOTHING will make it to the stylus. I heard they used the 1600 MKII's in Radio Stations because of that. Way, way better than any of the SL-1200 versions out there. Much nicer looking too. No stupid slider for the pitch changes on the right side. And the original Red Strobe Crystal instead of the big blue pop-up strobe on newer models. Congratulations on your new acquisition! FYI.. Mine has a cueing lever and the button. As well as the Vertical Tracking angle adjustment at the base of the deck.

Happy New Year 2025 to you both. So nice to see your beloved husband Philip here with you. Melinda, your looks at Philip are so delicious. A Technics SL-1700 MKII. What a beautiful turntable. As the proud owner of an SL-1200G and two SL-1210MKIIs from the mid 80s, my love for Technics goes back to those 80s.
Why actually? I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was in a disco as a young teenager. I saw these two 1210s and a DJ from the States, who was already ageing at the time, mixed the records together perfectly. During a break, I asked this DJ why these twelve-tens? He replied with the words that have always stayed with me: ‘Well my young Bavarian friend, believe me, girls come and go, the twelve-tens are for life!’
Keep up the good work. A hearty ‘Servus’ from Bavaria

Happy New Year! Great to see Phillip. Really like his sense of humor. I’m buying fewer record, but not because of the higher costs. For new music, I just stream it on Amazon Music or Spotify. Like used vinyl 20 odd years ago, CD’s are making a comeback because used CD’s are cheap and plentiful. But, from what I’ve read the sales of new CD’s in 2024 were down from 2023.
The Technics SL-1700 was a great find. I have a the SL1200 Mk2 which is my main turntable. It plays records flawlessly and sounds great in my system. The SL-1700 will serve you well for many years. Congratulations on finding one new in a box!

Awesome find on the turntable! My main turntable is a fully manual Technics Sl-1800MK2 that I bought new in 1979 (my original best cartridge was a Shure V15 Type 4, now I’m using a Denon DL-103.). When I was kid back then my parents house has suspended hard wood floors and traditional turntables always had feedback. The Technics eliminated that, and I was already impressed with the specs-belt drives were nothing like they are today, at least in the price range I could afford. I’ve upgraded everything in my system over the years since, but I’ve had no desire, or need, to replace the Technics. As always, love your videos!

Agree with Phillip, it is an emotional and intellectual shock to the system when considering the inflationary impact of the last four years compared to the rate inflation used to increase. And it is pretty wide spread across the board. But maybe it will continue to decline as it has over the last 4 years, but which were much higher rates than the prior 6 years.
I don’t think the CD revival will be long lasting, but I do think vinyl will continue to be as popular as ever amongst the over 40 crowd. Too many great memories and emotions attached to this format to let it go. Who the heck knows what the youngsters will be in to in the next few years.

Melinda happy new year! I think CD's are making a come back. A couple of reasons. They are less expensive than when they first came out. They sound great if you have a good front end. Dac's have greatly improved over the last several years which has really improved the sound quality. I wonder if vinyl will lose some it's popularity due to cost? Who knows.

Still loving my ancient Technics SL BD20 from 1993 with a really nice upgraded cart in my bedroom system and a AT LP140 in my main system and couldn't be happier with what I am hearing. I thankfully kept all of my 300 plus records and have bought a few cheap ones including Cheryl Crow's debut for $13.99 on
Amazon which sounds amazing. I will not spend stupid money on any hobby personally.

Good to see you both on this video! Cassettes! Newer tape production is so incredibly high quality, it was a no brainer for me. I buy LPS as much as I'm able but with the significant price drop in cassettes and their production quality, I find myself buying a lot of tapes now. I invested in an awesome vintage deck as well as a We Are Rewind portable unit and I'm as happy as a gopher in soft dirt 😃👍
I don't do digital, cds, streaming, etc. Just analog for me, tapes & lps. It feels more authentic and genuine in my opinion.
    Thanks for sharing guys 👍👍

Excellent presentation and discussion Melinda! Nice to see Philip once again too. I agree with Philip 100% that disposal income is not as it was. Inflation at the moment plays a big part on how one spends their money. Grocery shopping is insane, and takes a good part of our income now. Perhaps CD’s are selling now because of the lower cost, but in time I think this will change. Vinyl is not going away. I’m jealous of your turntable purchase. It would be nice if table manufactures would bring back some of the amenities found on tables years ago. Tone arm returning, and even players with spindles that dropped multiple records. I thank you and Philip for sharing your thoughts in this video. Much appreciated!

Thanks for a great episode Melinda, Happy New Year! We've all got different circumstances but certainly here in the UK it's the "Golden Age" of CD buying. Second-hand CDs can be bought for peanuts, $3 or $4 equivalent, and there's far less risk than buying used vinyl. I rip CDs & play through my digital source, and I confess, being old & creaky, it does save having to jump up to turn records over...I still buy the occasional LP because I love playing them & reading the cover.

    • @badmofaux
      @badmofaux 15 днів тому

I never stopped buying CDs. (altho I don’t buy nearly as many as I once did)
Never could accept the idea of paying for downloads. If I’m spending the money, then I want to get something tangible for it. Yes I then just turn around and rip it into my computer but I still have the original stored away.
Anyway it was only 5-6 years ago that you could find them for next to nothing, sometimes only the cost of shipping. I even had a couple sellers on eBay send me multiple copies of something just to get rid of them.
At some point that changed. More some of the more obscure stuff has turned collectible it seems.

    • @badmofaux

Also, I just bought a new CD player to match my amplifier. Single disc, nice and simple. Remains to be seen how much I actually use it (I play vinyl mostly), but it’s there if I need it.
There was a period of time there where you couldn’t really buy one. I remember searching the thrift stores, which is not my habit. Never did find a decent one.

I took my mom and brother to see a Complete Unknown the day after Christmas. The three of us loved it! I'm glad the movie focused on the years 1961 to 1965 since that's the era of Dylan I'm most familiar with. My favorite Bob Dylan song is the live version of "Maggie's Farm" from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Mike Bloomfield tears it up with his lead guitar playing on that song. Hope you two have a Happy New Year!

Part of the problem with record costs is that now there are multiple color variants being released. Back in the day, there would be the normal release on black vinyl, the singles from the album, and maybe a picture disc. Now you have the clear vinyl, Walmart exclusive translucent red vinyl, the black vinyl, the Hot Topic purple vinyl, etc. So to the serious collector and enthusiast, you may feel compelled to own all the variants. And, mind you, each of these will be priced differently and the number of each will be different. The collecting game has changed.
New vinyl at $30ish seems in-line with inflation adjusted historic prices.

Great video to kick off the New Year! I agree with the observations Phillip made on inflation and its impact on our discretionary income. My guess is that moving forward record collections will blend vinyl, cd’s and streaming based upon availability, quality and price. We’re not going to give up our love of collecting music. We’re just going to be more savvy in our purchases. Issue 2: Love, love, loved A Complete Unknown. Timothy Chalamet wisely chose not to impersonate Dylan, but rather captured his attitude and demeanor. The big revelation in the movie was Edward Norton’s portrayal of Pete Seeger. Brilliant! Favorite Dylan song: Desolation Row featuring the brilliant acoustic guitar work of Nashville session ace Charlie McCoy. Thanks again for another fun show. I hope you and your family have a great year!

Congrats! You finally got a real turntable! Isn't it obvious why the better turntable manufacturers copy Technics? lol
In 60+ years, I never stopped buying records(gawd I'm old) and have never stopped buying CD's since they were introduced in the U.S. In fact, I've got a new CD and an LP which arrived today! I've got 2 shipments en route from UDiscover Music, because of their 50% discount. I've been waiting about a week for The Sound Of Vinyl to ship my last order.
Cassettes are supposed to be coming back but I was never into the pre-recorded cassette tapes. The quality was never there. I did buy a reconditioned Pioneer cassette deck to go with my Pioneer quadraphonic receiver. I have some blank cassettes and was given a box of newly manufactured ones, but I have no interest in pre-recorded cassettes.

Plus, when I went back to review the table image, I saw the black strip across the front, and the dust cover didn't come to the very front edge. You got yourself one heck of a deal on a beautiful table that is unused and has an incredible built quality! Take care and enjoy the new edition to your system!

Happy new year, Melinda. Nice to see Phillip. What a 2024 you had. Now you get to settle in and enjoy your new home and new location. I’m sure your daughter must be so pleased to have you nearby. I have not seen the Dylan film, yet. I may wait for streaming because… it’s SO expensive to go to the movies! (Speaking of how expensive things are. When I was a little kid in the ‘60s, the theater in my small hometown in Texas they had children’s tickets and it was - are you ready? - 25 cents. And my dad would give my sister and I a quarter to get candy and sodas. Now a night at the movies for two is easily $50!! But I digress.

Great to see and hear you both - a very interesting discussion. My view is that we shouldn't be comparing current prices for new albums with the 1970s, but rather with about 10 years ago, when the vinyl revival got going. I think they are about double now (I remember a new record in the UK cost £15-£20, and now they are often £30 - £40) - and I don't believe prices generally have increased that much. Also, 'set-up' costs for making records and printing sleeves mostly occur at the start of the process, they are not, generally, recurring costs. The material costs of the records (which are basically just 200g of vinyl and cardboard) is very low. Of course, we want the artists to get their royalties, but have royalty rates really doubled in a decade? My feeling is that retailers are essentially price-gouging, trying to make as much as possible before the novelty of vinyl wears off. And that is a real thing - my own kids (now in their 20s)were interested in collecting and listening to vinyl for a few years, because it was new and exciting for them, but not any longer - they are back to streaming. It's older folk like us who are the enthusiasts and collectors. Personally, I would say that only about 20% of my vinyl purchase in the last couple of years have been of new records - the great majority are second hand. So, I think that either market forces will stabilise new record prices at levels that people like us are prepared to pay, or maybe, sadly, vinyl will gradually disappear again as it did in the 1990s. I think we are currently living in a golden age of vinyl - just in terms of the supply of new, reissued and second-hand records. I love it - I just wish new records weren't quite so expensive at the moment!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  14 днів тому

Well said. I agree that in the end it's going to be older people like me that keeps records going. Lol. I also think that the used vinyl market is a lot more expensive than it was 10 years ago. What used to be a $3 record is now a $25 record. I'm sorry your kids lost interest but I understand. Thank you and happy new year. ♥️🤗

Wow! It's been playing for 45 years. That's awesome. I can't believe ours has been sitting in a box unloved for about that long. We are so grateful to have found such a solid turntable. We will enjoy it for years to come. Thank you and have a wonderful 2025.

That turntable is a good find and thank you for pronouncing "Technics" properly! Phillip made some very astute comments about inflation/ record prices with which I wholeheartedly agree. Too often, people trot out this line about records costing X in Year X 40/50 years ago then using an inflation calculator to suggest that the price today is equivalent. These inflation calculators are a very flawed tool because as Phillip pointed out, look at the cost of property and cars (the two biggest expenses for most people) and they have gone way beyond what inflation calculators would suggest they should be. So I think (most) people's disposable income just isn't the same.
When I was growing up in the 80s, we lived fine off what my father earned (and he was not a high earner) whereas how many families today live purely off the income of the father (or sole breadwinner)? I remember that an album (record/ cassette) cost £5.99 around then and no-one thought that was "expensive" per se, it was just what they cost. And back then, if you wanted to hear a given song/ band you either bought the music or may hear one or two of their tracks on the radio. Now you have several companies offering unlimited streaming of music for $€£12 (ish) per month, so vinyl records at £30, £35 seem expensive to most people because they are comparatively expensive.

Thank you so much for expanding on what my husband said. You brought up excellent points. Back in the day, one income could sustain a whole family. In most cases that isn't the case today. Thanks again and have a wonderful day. 🤗♥️

Nice video, a lot of topics covered. No, I am not of those guys who went back buying CD's if not for SACD's and even those I almost quit because of many titles no longer available. Glad you mentioned inflation and decreased spending power especially in the last few years, I am confident things will change for the better in the near future. As far as prices of vinyl, I don't have too many complaints, but, as I often mention right here, I will not spend ridiculous prices for a single album, $150.00 for whatever re-mastering edition, with some booklets and some pictures and whatever else, will never make its way into my house. I buy records for listening pleasure and not as a form of investment, Wall Street takes care of that and has for many years. Congrats on the turntable, a fabulous score! As far as the Bob Dylan movie, I will patiently wait until it makes its way into Blu Ray format and then I'll get it when on sale.
Happy New Year to you and family and the best to your daughter in her medical career, I remember "those days" several decades ago.

Thank you for your kind words. Our daughter is thriving in her residency. She loves this so much more than medical school. 😃.
The Dylan movie is great and I also plan to buy the Blu-ray.
I'm not buying CDs but a lot of my viewers are. It's a more affordable way to have the fun of digging and to own their own format of the music they love. I completely understand. We all have budgets we have to stick to. Thank you again and have a wonderful 2025. ♥️🤗

Happy New Year guys! Hope 2025 is FANTASTIC for you. The cost thing with vinyl is really a crazy thing. I don't think it solely the overall increase/inflation from 60 years ago that is the issue as much as how much of that increase has taken place in the 10-12 years. I know working at the shop we regularly find ourselves saying ..."That was a just a $3 records 10 years ago which now is normally going for $25" I'll have customer bring two records to the counter and I scan them both and the total is $92. Without thinking about it I will find myself double checking bc I felt I rang something in wrong lol.

    Aloha
    Melinda and Philip
    Hau'oli Makahiki Hou !
Congratulations on your Technics Turntable, such a score, right place right time!
As far as record prices getting to expensive, it was for me in 2024, I didn't purchase that many at all.
Disposable income is the key for me. Even here in Honolulu, Hawaii
people who just enjoy music are going back to Cd's, & these are ones who also have vinyl. Of course most of them are younger than I am.
These music lovers grew up in an era of Cd's most likely they were in High School in the 1990's when Cd's were the biggest selling format, if not the only one.
Sound quality depending on Stereo unit, but car units Cd's were King !
I still have a lot of Cd's in boxes
stored under our house. I even have a huge Jazz Cd's from a friend who gave them to me about 20 + priority mailing boxes full, he was really into Bill Evans, so there's at least 40+ of those.
Your husband Philip hit it on the nose
It's the generation behind you that will make Cd's popular again, They are at the age of disposable income...
Melinda, thanks always for keeping us up to date & having your husband Philip on camera. Looking forward to seeing what record album ms you purchased from Sound of Vinyl.
I also ordered from Sound of Vinyl 50% off sale, got some awesome record albums at great prices & with free shipping to Hawaii.
I also ordered from UDISCOVERED MUSIC 50% off site too, both of them had a few different items.
Looking forward to watching your next videos & hopefully your husband Philip will be in some of them.

The internet is great for repairing sites. I too picked up a old Technics SL-220 from a antiques shop needing repair, went on the internet, repaired it myself, works like a charm. Records I`m looking for are early pressings that are hard to find in good condition and cheap. I don`t mind used CDs or Cassettes for the low cost and some artists do put their music on cassettes. This was a good topic Mel, Phil and I saved some $$$ and that was a great find, also seeing movies of an artists life can be mind blowing. I recently got to see the movie Ray, and while they`re still alive at the time of the screening makes it all that much better. RIP Ray Charles.

Great video, and great to see Philip again, really appreciate his perspectives. Nice score on the turntable. Guessing he didn't break it in with a Dylan or KISS record hahaha.
Regarding CDs or vinyl, I'm seeing an increase in interest in CDs, particularly among younger people. I was at a record store recently, when a group of young shoppers came in and I heard them excitedly say "they have CDs here." I'm buying up used CDs at second hand shops and thrift stores, and storing them away. I buy vinyl as well, but only when I can find deals. Speaking of, I recently bought the VH For Unlawful 2 LP/2 CD/BR set on Amazon for $55 less 30% off coupon, for total of $39. Nice set, has the Grundman mastering, lp sounds great, better to my ears than the 2023 CD box set.

If you owned a vinyl-pressing company and you only wanted to break even, maybe out of the love for music, what would your wholesale price be? I don’t know the answer but I think an absence of scalability is a fundamental problem.

Happy New Year! i could definitely see CDs making a comeback. They're basically the perfect format and near-indestructible. I think they were just 'unfashionable' which means it's inevitable they'll become 'cool' again with the passing of time. PS: hate to be that guy, but isn't that a 1700, not a 1200? The 1200 is basically the same but has an incredibly solid, heavy base. You could throw it on the floor and it'd probably be fine
