  • One of the most beautiful and picturesque valley in the heart of Polish Tatra's is Dolina Gąsienicowa (Valley is called Dolina in Polish).
In a way it extends along the edge of the mountains, yet it belongs to their center, having the features of a high-mountain landscape.
The name of Hala Gąsienicowa (Hall is called Hala in Polish) comes from the well-known Gąsienica family of highlanders, one of the oldest in Podhale (highland region).
The ancestors of this family had their pastures here, where they grazed sheep and cattle. In winter, a chairlift transports skiers from Dolina Gąsienicowa to Kasprowy Wierch . It is one of the best ski areas in Poland! Another gem of this valley is CZARNY GĄSIENICOWY LAKE at 1628 m and is 1.6 km ahead of Hala Gąsienicowa.
Nestled in the foothills of the Tatras ZAKOPANE is Poland’s best-known mountain resort. In addition to outdoor pursuits Zakopane is known for its beautiful wooden villas dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of these now house museums, while others have been converted into hotels or pensions. We booked a Swiss style cottage away from the main town near Tatra National Park. Our accommodation was comfortable, clean, cosy and surrounded by tall pine trees where chirping birds was our morning alarm.
Although there are various trails to reach Hala Gąsienicowa we took the one which start from Kuźnice from where the blue trail starts. We purchased admission tickets to the Tatra National Park. After completing the necessary formalities we started trekking on a slightly uphill path.Initially we crossed dense spruce forest that grows first on the slopes of Nieborak and then Boczania.
Enjoying a wide panorama of the Beskidy Mountains en-route the trekking trail which is easy and the rise in the elevation is gradual. A comfortable, rocky path runs among the fine mountain pine, gently climbing the slope of Mały Kościelec. The trail leading to it is interesting not only because of the views, but also the events that took place in this area years ago We came across Karłowicz Stone in memory of the composer, photographer and mountaineer Mieczysław Karłowicz (1876-1909) who died in an avalanche.
The obelisk which commemorates this event is located on the left side of the trail below in the place where the dead artist was found. This accident accelerated the establishment of Tatra Mountains Ambulance Service.
We however without going down to the stone continue on the trail. After crossing a steep ascent to the moraine of Czarny Staw we were welcomed by the distant view of the pristine Gąsienicow Lake. It is an extremely charming place, attracting many trekkers who like to rest in the vicinity of the monumental Tatra peaks.
Tatra National Park has lot to offer to adventure enthusiasts, nature and photography lovers.
