What’s funny about this scene too is that Sheira thought she had the upper hand. The Gilmores may not have been as rich as the Huntzbergers, but Emily could crush Sheira socially if she wanted to. Emily was part of the old money circuit and ruled it with her friends with an iron fist, and she just reminded her of it.

I think Emily lovers are a minority within the GG fandom but I absolutely adore Emily. She's a classy, cultured, refined lady. It's not her fault Lorelei is naturally rebellious and rejected the morals Emily and Richard tried to instill in her.
Imagine being financially and socially blessed and having parents that wanted you to practice hypergamy then throwing it all away to go be a struggling single mom living in a storage shed.

It was weird how during the ‘Friday Night Fight’ episode midway though the season, Richard and Emily both then denied any knowledge of Lorelai coming to them to spell out Rory’s situation before they agreed to let her stay in the pool house.

I hesitate to say that that was the moment Richard realized that he had failed Rory. More like it was another sock-in-the-gut reminder of just how remarkable Rory was. Organizing a DAR fundraiser in the middle of her crisis.

100%, you can see it in his eyes. It's unfortunate that Emily and Richard only took accountability with each other, then gaslighted Lorelai to avoid having to apologise sincerely and really dig down into why they didn't believe her. That wall they built is exactly why there is such a disconnect in their relationship. And they'll never acknowledge it

@@blairbrown4812I don’t think he was proud. It looked more like the fact that Rory was about to become like all the socialites, organizing events, when she was supposed to become a fierce career woman. He got very upset a few episodes about her living this lifestyle and losing track a few episodes after. With her giving up Yale she basically confirmed what Mitchum said about her.

Emily’s face at 2:16 will never fail to get me that’s you messed with the wrong grandmother face. If Richard is bad when he’s mad oh Emily’s is worse. The Gilmores don’t play when it comes to their granddaughter. Rory is their most prize possession and they’re not gonna let some fools such as the Hunzburgers talk smack about their girl. Love that Emily didn’t hold back to call Shila a gold digger which is so true and talk about her weight, oh Emily was on Fire. this is a prime example of the difference between old money and new money. Shira is influential in her circle to a degree due to her being extremely wealthy, but she'll never get the level of respect and power that someone like Emily has, simply because she wasn't born into it, which ironically is exactly the reason she dislikes Rory for...

Richard & Emily think they are so elite. Well bred, upper crust. They expect everyone to treat their Rory like a princess. They thought Logan Huntzberger was such a match for Rory. They talked about great-grandchildren with Logan’s blond hair and Rory’s big blue eyes. What’s not spoken here is the Huntzbergers look down on Rory for being a bastard, the product of a scandalous teen affair then being raised by a hotel maid. As for Mitchum, it didn’t even occur to him to be nice to Rory just cuz she’s a Gilmore or that she’s his son’s girlfriend. He was too honest with his opinions. For the first time in Richard’s life, he realizes Lorelei may be right to raise Rory away from this whole lifestyle.

I would argue that Loreli was a bad mother and role model for Rory, and keeping her away from that life left her at a disadvantage with not knowing how that world worked, the back stabbing, the lies, rumors, etc. Loreli didn't want to be a part of that life, but she didn't do Rory any favors, she was selfish. She wanted what was best for her, not for Rory, or she would not have taken away the advantages Rory could have had. Had she grown up in that circle, she would have learned how to maneuver it, like Emily does. She could have still kept her grounded, in reality, but at the same time given her opportunities she didn't have.

I have said it before, and I will die on this hill, Mitchum did NOTHING WRONG TO RORY. The ONLY thing he was wrong for was only taking her in for reasons other than her abilities. That is IT. He handled Rory very professionally and even sat down with her HIMSELF and for once in her life, told her the TRUTH. He wasn't mean to her. He didnt call her names. He handled her with great care, while being HONEST with her. It wasnt HIS FAULT she couldnt handle the rejection, which happens to EVERYONE starting out. The FAULT with that lies with Lorelai, Emily, and Richard. Period.

The way I interpreted that scene with Richard being disappointed or sad for Rory is that deep down a part of him realized Mitchum was right because the way Rory embraces the DAR's and everyone else's praise and respect in that scene he sees his granddaughter hiding from Mitchum's criticism and running away from her failures instead of learning from them. In that moment he realized him and Emily failed Rory by enabling her fear of failing

She was always put onto a piedestal by her mom, Luke, her grandparents, and never faced really world, professional criticism. And honestly, Mitchum, for the reputation he has, was actually very gentle when he gave Rory his opinion. He was also far from wrong (watch the short 4-episode revival). Yes, she was a bit young, but she gave up way too easily for something that was ''her dream''.

Yep. Though I don’t 100% agree with the way Mitchum spoke to Rory, he did give her a dose of reality because no one is going to hold your hand and console you out there. You have to deal people pretentious people and have a thick skin, as well as find your niche in society. Moreover, with regards to Rory not being accepted at the Huntzburger house, that is also a dose of reality because not everyone is going to deem you a worthy person with whom to consort. At least she found out where she stood with that family early on in the relationship. Rory just kept whining and vying for acceptance. Annoying.😅

If you’re in a position of power and you are deliberately saying something to break someone’s self-esteem, that isn’t being realistic, it’s just cruel. There is a way to give constructive criticism and that wasn’t it. Everyone loves to hate on Rory because they can’t handle that she wasn’t perfect! A character without any problems or flaws would be boring because human people have flaws. The point of Rory’s story isn’t that she’s supposed to be a super successful reporter. It’s that she has an image in her head of what she thinks she should be and that prevents her from finding out who she really is. And I think a lot of people can relate to that.
