Yeah, here in Chile no one calls the Aysén region by its full name, only for "official" occasions. I have visited some of these wonderful places in the region, such as the fjords and snowdrifts. The Laguna San Rafael Park, the Queulat National Park and the Patagonia National Park are beautiful, and all of them are worth visiting.
I visited them on a trip with my family when we took the so-called "Carretera Austral" (southern highway), a road that goes through important places in the southern regions of Chile.
As you said, it is very likely that the Chonos became extinct due to the diseases of the Europeans and because they mixed with other natives, the Huilliches, the Mapuche people who lived in the south of the country.
To add a little more "recent" history: the southeastern part of the region was very problematic because the border with Argentina was very confusing, and although official borders were established, the Chilean government changed the border, as Chilean settlers settled on the Argentine side, many of them without knowing well that it was Argentine territory. This would cause a small conflict in 1965, when some Chilean settlers in Argentine territory would ask Chilean police (Carabineros) for help due to a warning from Argentine frontier police (Gendarmes). The Chilean police officers went to safeguard the place, and when the Argentine police officers arrived, a shootout broke out and ended with one Chilean police officer dead and another injured. This caused a stir in Chile and the incident became known as the Battle of the Desert Lagoon (la Batalla o Incidente de la Laguna del Desierto). As it is technically on the Argentine side, it is not part of the official history of the region, but it is well remembered because it is considered an important event for the following years: territorial tension between Argentina and Chile would grow over another territory, the Beagle Channel (Canal del Beagle), reaching to the point of almost starting a war in 1978.
Also:
The sign at 16:11 was saying "No tirar basura", wich means "No littering".
Those caves at 17:01 and 19:50 are the Capillas de Mármol/ Catedral de Mármol (Marble chapels or Marble Cathedral), considered as national monument. I also visited them.
The images at 22:23 and 23:49 are basically the scenario that you see in the forrests of south of Chile, the so-called Selva Valdiviana.
Here in Chile the pronuncation of Paine (for the Torres del Paine) is not like Maine or pain, is more like "pie-na".
I've loved these series of videos where you have visited various regions of Chile (such as Atacama, Araucanía and now Aysén). Thank you so much! I hope you make more!
Cheers from Chile!
i love your nails!! also hope you do another atoll video soon…. the way you say it is so satisfying!
Thank you🦋
You're right. California and Chile are very similar. I'm Chilean but I've been from San Diego to southern Oregon, several times, and it felt like being in a bigger copy of my country, lol.
Love the pride nails!💖🌈
