    Steve, I believe that those Excell rims have the inner safety rims (as per tubeless) so if you use the extremely effective Outex tape you can easily turn them into tubeless.

    • @steve_kamrad5216
      @steve_kamrad5216 8 місяців тому

      Mmmm, well, if you buy this bike, you don't want tubeless tires, you want the non dot racing tube type stuffz but that is a good point and I will ask about.

      @@steve_kamrad5216 Maybe strictly for racing but lethal for continuous high speed freeway work as HD tubes run very hot and can blow out. They add considerable unsprung weight which saps BHP and adds vertical and lateral inertia which screws up suspension settings and braking and turn in. And a nail or long catus thorn will still lead to total deflation instantly. Tubliss system is much lighter, runs cooler and can hold a tire on the rim even with a sidewall slash. Downside you need a 100 psi pump and a daily top up. My preference is genuine tubeless with puncture resistant tires and OKO fluid which balances better than any wheel weights ever will and slows deflation. Easy to fix punctures with a plug in seconds. Downside is tire changes are messy. There is no perfect solution even now.

      @jamesfairmind2247 if you have all these theories and concerns about tube type bikes and these issues, this just isn't the bike for you. And you should stick to the DesertX standard. Cause it will just ease ur mind. This bike is for the offroad performance weapon category.

      @@steve_kamrad5216 I wouldn't buy either of them. Any bike that pretends to be a serious off road bike yet takes a 30 minute strip down to replace an air filter is not on my radar. My comments (none of which are theories but very well established facts, provable on a dyno etc ) re different tire solutions apply to every bike made and are a headache for all of us. No harm in airing them.

    • @steve_kamrad5216
      @steve_kamrad5216 8 місяців тому

      @jamesfairmind2247 I wouldn't choose which motorcycle I wanted based on air filter maintenance times. And to think that Ducati built a bike thats pretending to be serious, when your opinion is that tubed wheels are not the right choice proves you have some theories, but ask any really aggressive, capable, experienced rider/racer and they'll tell you that the advantages of non-dot tires (all of which are tube type) with tubes is much more reliable for the type of riding this "very serious" off road bike was built for. Some times through text things come off harsh, but if you think tubeless is the way to go, I think you're leaning towards a capable ADV bike. These Desert X's have already proven themselves in races like the erzburg prolog and Biltwell 100 and other rallies so far, and if you ask any professional moto journalists or racer, the Desert X rally and the ktm 890 rally are the two most serious adv bikes on the market currently. Infact the Desert X Rally is the first ADV bike I haven't been able to "over ride". I'll have to ask a bit about the excel rim and the tire bead still. But also something to consider, the closed cartridge kyb front forks need to serviced (seals and Teflon wear bands) every 17k kilometers. The rear shock is 48k kilometers. It's a built race/hardcore bike and should be celebrated no matter what manufacturer builds it. Cheers

    Looks like the mounting for the muffler is bolt on, but what do you think of the placement of mufflers in general on adv bikes? People unnecessarily concerned, or should manufacturers find ways to put them more out of ways?

      @TwoHawksHunting 4 місяці тому

      The only way to get that tailpipe completely out of the way is to run it up underneath the seat and out the back like Ducati used to do with the 916. Unfortunately, they couldn't stop all that heat from roasting the riders buns. 😂 9:20

  • @williamb.6918

    I think the question is not why did this bike come with tubed wheels, but why those widths? The similarly targeted KTM model was the same way. A 2.15/3.5 combo would have been perfect for the more aggressive tires available. It kind of sucks to buy a top of range specialized model and feel like you immediately need to go out and buy expensive new wheels.

    • @hagestad
      @hagestad 8 місяців тому

      Its Volkswagen. They are weird like that. Nice bike but they expect you to service that bike @dealer. That is ridiculous for a bike of this type.

    • @steve_kamrad5216
      @steve_kamrad5216 8 місяців тому

      I hear ya, but also the 2.15 and 4" will take most of the fatter dirt bike rubber and adv bike rubber. They're is actually no better option for widths and a as person with rally width rims from woodys (90/90, and 120 rear 2.15) you'd actually be hard up to find tires that can handle the load rating or be justified doing adv work. So these are the best, strongest choice

    • @steve_kamrad5216
      @steve_kamrad5216 8 місяців тому

      @hagestad I hear ya, but you can't do normal maintenance, they just don't want you to do a valve adjustment or computer work, which I (let's say I'm Ducati) I wouldn't want to trust you to do you own valve job either. Heck I don't trust myself to do valves and used to work on hydraulics and air frames in the Marines. So

      @@steve_kamrad5216 Yeah. It was nice to get a 2.15 front at least. Many of the better tubed rears until you get really skinny are 140's which are best with a 3.5 (and most of these have an appropriate load rating for bigger bikes). Thankfully we can get the 908RR's or Desert H/T's in either 140 or 150 these days (although you are getting a TL design with the 150 in some cases).
