A wonderful performance
One should never forget that by actually perfecting one piece one gains and learns more than by starting or half-finishing a dozen.
― Johannes Brahms
This cycle was the first music I heard Quasthoff sing - just after he had won the ARD-Musikwettbewerb in the 1980s (the encore was Ol‘ Man River).
I fell in love with the voice instantly and until today I haven’t found a better interpretation of the Vier ernste Gesänge - or a more ideal voice for this music.
As good as it gets
