Gator is referring to "MIDI thru" - but that's less common on these mini synths; neither the JU-06A or the MicroFreak has a dedicated Thru port; hopefully one can set the Out ports to be Thru if they aren't using Out - otherwise, the best bet is likely a midi splitter/thru adapter
You get yourself a Kenton midi-thru unit, the standard one is 1 to 5, take the out from the keystep to the in of the unit and you can attach 5 other units with no loss of latency or throughput. Done.
Firstly, thank you for getting straight to the setup and how things work. Lot's of other videos about it, but everyone goes the long way round. Yours straight to the point. Wish everyone was like that.
Love your vids. You’ve taught me a lot. Use a MIDI thru box to add more synths. For example, run 1 MIDI OUT from Keystep Pro to a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru. That box has 4 MIDI thru’s to run to MIDI INs of 4 synths. Use other MIDI OUT from Keystep Pro to your Drumbrute.
And using MIDI THRUs as suggested by one viewer does work… but the more synths you chain this way the more latency you introduce down the chain. And if one synth powers off or fails, everything downstream will fail too. You’ve helped so many people with your reviews etc. And I love your songs
Thanks so much for the vid on setting up Tracks and Channels with the Keystep Pro and Logic. I couldn't find any help in the manual and was tearing out what little hair remains when I lucked onto your channel. Now I will sleep tonight. Where did you pick up on the Auto demix setting? Couldn't you use MIDI Thru to expand your setup?
This setup is so dope man! So inspiring having all of your fav sounds at your fingertips. Your beats have gotten next level - I’d love to see you drop a beat tape one day!
Hey Patrick - nice. I love studio tours and gear setups like this - it's really helpful and inspiring to see how other musicians use their gear. Re. controlling the Impact - you could try a MIDI switcher. In my old studio I had switchers and Thru boxes all over the place and could route anything to anything else - providing I could remember what was plugged in where :-) There's no substitute for having ALL your gear accessible and playable at the same time.
Thx bruh. I used your vid as my inspiration for my setup. But i run 1 midi out to a thru box and connect it to 4 synths. And the other midi out to my drum machine. And the usb to my ipad to run all the virtuals. All clocks connected. Keystep runs 4 tracks and i play the others independent, sometimes using their built in sequencers. The sound gets BIG. . . maybe too big😱
This is great-a hybrid producer who is showing us how to move out of the box (Thedesktop/Laptop). You should look at joining Produce Like a Pro Academy-because we have no EDM Ableton Live Instructors (Yaeh-shilling). What makes this video awesome is you are showing quickly how to route MIDI channels to individual hardware devices-while recording/documenting them at the same time-which is the Holy Grail. That's enough for now-but great tunes-integrating played string instruments instead of Plug-ins is awesome-sauce! Thanks again man!
4:11 dude! You don’t need a separate cable for each synth! Your synths should have MIDI Thru on them. :) You should be able to run all your synths from the key step.
I just got a Keystep Pro, and I have yet to get any hardware instruments. As a total newbie, I really appreciate this comment. After a bit more research on my end, it looks like each track is just a separate channel in the same MIDI data stream that's going to each device. The various pieces hardware should only need to read one particular channel.
hey awesome vids - I am trying to use my drum pads instead of the keystep pro keys to create drum tracks (using sequential drum tracks drum machine) any advice on how to use the drum pads on the drum machine instead of the keys? I can't figure it out for the life of me! perhaps its because I am using an old school drum machine?
So cool man we have almost the same set up! I use a MIDI splitter to connect the 4 instruments and also remember to set the MIDI channels correctly in each piece of gear. Despite having the same synths, you and I sound very different. How cool is that?
Thank you for this. I'll be using a hybrid set up as well. I'm just confused on how you connect all those synths with just two midi outs? Wouldn't you need. a cable for each synths midi in?
Hi mate. I’m pretty new to Dawless jamming so have a question. I’m in need of a hardware sequencer of some sort. My JU06a is synced via USB to the MX1. If I had 5 pin midi out from an external sequencer like this Keystep, will it be all good send midi info on regard to the notes / chords, but not affect the sync that is midi via usb? Sorry if that’s nonsense but I am new to MIDI, so I’m just curious about what the JU06a, or any other synth tbh, will do if it has 2 different lots of midi in. The midi via usb is vital as that’s audio, midi, sync, but of course the on board 16 step sequencer is a bit limiting so sending riffs from a Keystep or beatstep would be wicked. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I just don’t know. Cheers man. Happy jamming. ;)
Hey Patrick! Really enjoy your videos and your playing! Thank you! I have a question though, how do you make videos of your looping jams? like, do you use Ableton automation? (although i think you use Logic Pro) or you just record parts separately and than you edit it in the video that looks like one thing goes into another? It would be really cool if you could share it in one of your videos, cause I've been trying to post some videos with looping / jamming / beats etc. but it all looks bad in the end hahaha. and most of the time i have no idea where to start. Please, share the secret!
Honestly man, I haven't quite perfected this for myself. Check out Aldo, he has really cool loop/jam videos. Just one camera shot, but his videos are super cool. This might be the way to go. As for me, I just shoot each part / instrument separately and edit everything together in Final Cut.
@@PatrickBreenMusic you mean it takes TIME??? I haven't got TIME!! (it shows..nice vids and great walkthroughs and playing especially the wamchicka wah lines at the end).
Hi Patrick, thanks for this video. Shows in a very nice way what I wanted to know! I wanted to know if a Keystep Pro can be used as a step sequencer for hardware synths and VSTs.
Nice! I’m thinking about picking up a Keystep pro to go with my own hardware synths, guitar, and bass. I’ve often wondered if an MPC would make sense. Does the Keystep pro take away the need for an MPC for you?
@@joegrant413 I only have a lil Arturia mini lab MK2 so I can’t tell you what the Pro does (I’m sure someone posted a video about it somewhere). But I use my mini lab as a keyboard for my mpc. So I’ll do like all my drums on the. MPCpads but all my bass, keys, and everything else on my keyboard. Honestly the MPC One is so amazing once you really learn it..never had such fun making beats and with such great sonic results like the possibilities are really endless. I was looking into the key step pro cause I want a keyboard with more keys but I might wait to see what AKAI is releasing next cause it looks Like they’re doing a combo MPC/keyboard.
Thanks for the video! I'm thinking about to get this nice Keystep Pro or... continue to work with my Roland A-800 Pro and somehow to get similar results (with DAW of course). Any thoughts on this are welcome, plz! I just want to mention one thing I've seen/heard here. Roland's "boutique" serie isn't beating real analog synths. It's only a "label" that you're buying. It's not those old cool Roland synths from 80s. Maybe in 15-20 years this "analog modelling" will become really close 99.99% to real analog oscillators, filters, overdrive circuits and etc... But it's NOT NOW yet :) I've didn't seen the code of course. But if that's based on PolyBLEPs feature (for oscillators) then it has the noticeable drawback(s) (with amazing improvements of course!). You can believe whatever you want of course. I'm not blaming anybody :)
Thinking of swapping out my Keystep 37 for the Pro. What’s the best all around Boutique for bass and synth sounds. I’m torn between the Ju-06 Sh-01a and Se-02. Great video!
I think both work great it depends how well can you design the sound. Initially I thought of using my Ju06a for pads and melodies only, but its so much more than that. Same for the Sh01a
