Well, I am glad you're OK and it did not mess up your M1. Thanks for sharing this as it reminds us that we should keep an eye on it at all times as it is doing its job. The safety instructions are not just for fun.
If you had the exhaust fan hooked to a hose and vented outside would the smoke still have been seen or would it have been sucked outside and not given you the warning?
Yes, it would have been harder to notice. Luckily, I was keeping a close eye on it being my first time trying those test grids. Anytime your working on a new project, you haven't done before, your better off watching it like a hawk just to be on the safe side.
Hey mate, thanks for your videos. They are great for me. I have a question. Can you put a part of thick paper or cardboard which you cut with scissors as a template. So you scan this with your camera and cut this contour out of wood?
If your referring to scanning it with the camera of the M1, you can. When you load the machine and close the lid, it takes a picture of whatever is in the M1. You can then use the drawing tool to trace the object on the screen using the xTool Creative Space software and save that as a project. I am not sure how well it will scale it but once you get the basic drawing finished, you can resize it in the software itself.
The test file I used was not designed for wood. It was designed for testing on a diffferent material and heated up the wood too much. Enough to make it catch fire. Luckily I kept an eye on it and was able to take care of it quickly. On a side note, the xTool M1 handled the fire like a champ. Nothing inside was melted/damaged in any way.
Just found your channel and subscribed. I have a d1 10w and I was interested in seeing your material settings for cutting and engraving. I figured if you have the same wattage machine I could use your settings as a beginning point. When I clicked your link I did not see your spreadsheet. Can you point me to the correct link. Thanks in advance.
@@MonkeyWoodworks I was looking for the m1 settings. I found the p2 but I do not have a p2. I have a d1 10w and I thought that the m1 settings would be helpful. If you can forward me a direct link it would be appreciated. Sorry about the mix up.
Currently, the only way to send a job to the M1 is using the M1 software. I use XCS (xTool Creative Space) to design and send jobs to the M1. I have used Inkscape to add cut/score (aka vector) lines to a PNG image and saved it as a SVG. And I have used AutoCAD to make a couple of DXF files for it. DXF files are read by XCS as vector lines.
It was a crazy 20-second frenzy of decision making haha. At least I know what ill do if it happens again. Perhaps the situation will be a little more calm.
Hi Michael! Thanks so much for doing this series for the M1, it's been super helpful! I'm new to the whole laser machine, and having a lot of charing when I cut most things, I seen your video on the air assist and thinking of getting that to see if it helps, aside from that, what's the best way to find the right settings for materials? For example, I was trying to cut a coaster, and some of the details come out super burnt including the back side, I used their starter kit wood and settings and it came out pretty burnt. Second question, I tried to engrave on a bamboo cutting board, and I'm not sure how to figure out the settings since they don't have it as an option on their materials. Do you happen to know how to do it? And third, (I'm sorry for all the questions, but your page has been the most helpful), what is the reason for having foil in your machine? Thank you for your time and help! Blessings, -malia
First, thank you so much for the kind words! On the matieral settings, have you visited my Google sheet I shared? On that file, I share all the settings I use for different projects. Have a look at the description of any of my M1 videos for a link. Figuring out what settings to use is all trial and error. That is why I felt the need to share what settings I have used and found worked for my projects. If you have not already done so, I suggest you view all my videos in the series. You will find that I add more tips/tricks in my videos as I learned them along the way including what the foil is for. If you still have questions after that, feel free to reach out to me via Instagram or Facebook and we can chat! Good Luck Malia!
@@MonkeyWoodworks Thank you so much! And yes, such great info on that Google sheet! I'm saving that for sure 🙌 I will continue to watch your videos and learn along the way! Thank you again so much! 😊
I cut black acrylic in my latest video. Its my understanding it can cut MOST opaque acrylics but it cant cut blue and maybe some light orange. And it definitely can not cut clear unfortunately. It has to have color particles in the acrylic for the laser to hit and melt/cut.
I am not sure if you have addressed this in any of your videos, but I am trying to use the image extract mode but have been unsuccessful. This video is the type of function I am referring to ua-cam.com/video/AT2eR1L0Vq8/v-deo.html. I know this video is for the D1 but I was under the impression that the M1 can do the same. Thank you for the videos you have posted, very helpful.
I have not covered it in a video but I have used it. I was surprised at how well it worked. I was able to extract it onto the screen, the used the image edit feature in XCS to remove the background area that I did not want to use.

You are welcome. I am happy to know it has been helpful.
Appreciate your videos
I am glad you find them helpful!
Wow that's crazy! DId you ever find a good file for testing the power?
Yes, they updated the file in the facebook group to the correct file type. No more flames lol

@@MonkeyWoodworks sounds good. Thanks :) I need to try it as soon my M1 received
Scary! I have a spray bottle of water next to mine in case something like this happens.
I have one now as well lol
Did you figure out why it caught fire? Was it set for a different material other than the wood you were using?

Look for my Material Settings link in the description. It's a multi-tab Google sheet with lots of good information.

have you cut leather by any chance with the laser?
I have not. I have engraved a baseball glove but that's it as far as leather goes.
Could you posted a link to the test file? Hopefully, I do not have the same results.
They are posted in a private M1 group. Someone is modifying them to work better with the M1. I will post a link once they are finalized.
I want one of these so bad. But they don’t cut acrylic well, or at all.
True. They can cut certain colored acrylics but that's it.

Hi. Can you please tell me which acrylics you were able to cut? I've tried with a few pieces I had and it didn't work at all for me.

Can it cut gold?
Do you have link to test file?
It is in the Files section of the FB group.
