True!! It was my giging amp as well. Did 30-40 gigs with it for years. Such a solid beast it was. And I had Recto and some Marshalls as well but I always played on my Switchblade. H&K makes awesome amps!
Framus Dragon is a brutal MIDI controlled tube amp as well. I'm a Mesa Recitfier fan, and when I plugged into a Dragon w/ my Baritone I was blown away. Crushing tone w/ a unique character all of it's own. The programmability & MIDI recall features are legit.
I regret selling mine as well. I was hell bent on using rack gear at the time. Now I'm using AxeFx 3, but there's still not a Dragon model yet. @@bradhill935
The CoreBlade was out in the early to mid 2000s and got the Core part of its name from Metal core. It was very much supposed to be a challenger for the space of ultra saturated, big low end and super tight sound (Framus Cobra ruled the roost at the time, but also 5150s and Mesa were used for this. Hughes & Kettner has always had the curse of being a lesser known name, even in modern day. They make really high quality amps and have had some really nice amps but because ofnthe quality and workmanship their prices have always been close to, if not the same as bigger name competitors. As a result some of Hughes & Kettners more niche offerings were really short lived because the sales didnt support them.
I legit searched for one of these when I was looking to get my first tube amp! I ended up with a H and K statesmen, which I traded for a 5150 combo. Coreblades are awesome!
Thanks! I follow a decent handful of guitar reviewers and this is the first time I've EVER seen and H&K demoed. I love that ultra gain channel, and i might be looking at one now.
Scored a switchblade a year ago.... I will def keep that Amp. They are highly overlooked. Blends very well for recording as well, and has a great lower mid growl
Try the switchblade if you can. The lead channel sits between crunch and ultra. It's more like a hot rodded 800 and the drive channel is more dynamic than this one. I've always loved the switchblade, but could never get on with the core blade.
I warmed up to the amp a bit when you changed modes, but that clean mode left me cold. The distortion modes are perfectly serviceable, but I like what you said about being unique. Anyway, I don't think this amp would be my first choice, but that's just me, and I'm sure lots of others would find it inspiring. Thanks to your student for letting you demo it.
That Battery riff in Drop D is wild. A guitarist I've worked with a couple times uses a GrandMeister with similar programmable functions. It sounds pretty decent, plus having the RedBox built in and the ability to play it silently with the also-included loadbox makes it a solid choice when a silent stage is important (I'm one of those rare FOH engineers who is usually not a stickler for a silent stage, but sometimes it's necessary). It also has a fairly serviceable clean channel, and the built-in boost helps add a little character. This Coreblade model probably isn't as versatile for covering a wide range of styles, though, so I can see why it's not for everyone.
I had a Tubemeister 40 for a bit, really awesome features and form factor but man the tones were not my jam. Was pretty sad to sell it because it was awesome in theory.
These were always interesting to me but they aren't widely available to try in the US. It seems like it could use a boost / front end EQ. Thanks for the demo!
I think you’re thinking ENGL when talking about that clicky high end thing. ENGLs have that weird compressed “scream” that some Hughes and Kettner amps have, it’s part of their signature.
The Coreblade came with a Midi footswitch which can store up to 100 presets. If you play on a festival with short changeover time you only have to put this one footswitch on the stage and you have all the sounds you need for traditional metal. I really like the delay for leads and the chorus and phaser are also totally sufficient for live use, But this amp is really not for playing with the volume pot on the guitar. You have crystal clean (that Nothing else matters sound) or brutal high gain. Works very well for me, but definitively not for every style of music.
I have the H&K grandmeister deluxe 40. The coreblade seems to be a less refined version of that amp, however no doubt a great starter. Check out the gmd40 for a great sounding amp that can do it all
The Ultra 1 is kind of like the archetypal H&K drive sound to me. It's somehow a bit muddy and fizzy at the same time? It's no wonder it's kinda Dual Rectifier inspired considering when these came out.
Actually.....you can save 128 presets via MIDI and access all the settings....not just independent settings for the 4 channels. It’s really 4 “modes” as opposed to “channels”. I’ve had a Switchblade 100 for about 15 years. The Coreblade started as a metalized version of the Switchblade as a signature amp for Jeff Waters of Canadian metal band Annihilator. The effects on these are ok, nothing super great....but as a grab’n go amp or something sitting around to “scratch the itch” without having to hook up a bunch of pedals......it’s a cool amp. I think the original Switchblade would be more Leon’s speed as it’s less of a “metal”, and more of a “covers all the basses” amp. Cheers! 🤘🤘
i wanted to like this amp as i loved the hk zintera we had for awhile, but truly, not 1 sound was anything i'd want to play through or listen to. its a super neat idea and hk always did there own thing which was fun to watch..but..just sounded tinny and cheap if you get what i mean
Cant wait to hear this now after Euge Leon.. im sure lupin has his popcorn there .. 😺......well i think you too just got thru listening to Euge there Leon.. you know you made that amp sound awesome mate.. .. .. make sure lupins got enough popcorn... 😺 🌏
I have Hughes and Kettner Grand Meister 40 Deluxe man. Try turning that first Master volume higher than a quarter of the way up. When I use the built in load box RedBox I have to turn the Main Master up and the Channel low in my apartment, but it gives it way more saturation for my type of metal and the Leads are awesome!!!!. All the channels sound fuller! The Crunch even sounds like ACDC man hahaha try it! That master volume being so low is killing the tone of the amp
Is there an App for this amp? The Modulation is different than mine. Once I figured it out the chorus is quite nice actually. I never seen this amp, but it looks pretty cool. I'll stick to this one for now it has all the tone I'll ever need.
I dislike Ultra 1. Way too fizzy and Rectifierish. Other than that s good amp I think. Thomas Blug did interesting work at H&K and still does in his own company.
With 4 channel's, that all seem to do there own thing...with pedals (if needed) I'd say even just channel 1+2 are super useful....and if you do need so cosmic dirt, then the other two channels have got you covered?
I just want to thank you Leon for bridging the gap I felt between vintage and metal guitar sounds. You're a breathe offresh air compared to Stevie T and Glenn Fricker!😂
I had the previous version, the Switchblade. I think its a better sounding amp than the Coreblade, all channels were voiced more towards hard rock. The Coreblade was supposed to be the "metal" version of the Switchblade and the high gain Ultra channels missed the mark a bit IMHO. The Switchblade had a great Lead channel that was dropped in the Coreblade but it was the best channel on that amp. If you can track down a Switchblade I'd definitely recommend you trying it out! I like this format of amps. Basically an all-in-one 100w rig. I wish more companies would make amps like that.
I would have to agree with his assessment. I have a Switchblade 2x12 and a Coreblade. It is tough to make the Coreblade work and get the sound you want but the Switchblade is much better for rock.
I've played the Triamp (alot), owned the Tubemeister & the coreblade. They have their own sound...which I dont like. As you said, the cleans are ok, the crunch is not bad, i found the ultra 2 to be quite nice for leads...ultra 1 seems to be for a certain style...the amp has it's own sound, i didnt like it, i play thrash & I like that really tight saturated sound with clarity & this amp i found to be quite flubby. A decent pedal sorted that out, but then doesnt that defeat the purpose of a 4 ch "metal" amp with a built in boost? Bottom line is that it's passable for rock, great for nu metal & pretty much anything sludgy, but not much else...& the fx are medicore at best.
Your pickup seems too hot for this amp. As you've noticed the amp produce kind of weird distortion with the gain knob at 0 at Ultra I channel. Amount of gain at the last two channels is suspicious. I've got a Switchblade head and its nothing like this Coreblade. I need to tweak gain more than a half at Ultra channel to achieve metal sounding guitars.
Hmmmm I think you were super kind here. If you're 15-16, you'd probably be better off with a 2x12 Boss Katana. And when you're a bit older, pick up an FM3 and a powered cab for home use.
Well some people don't want to use a computer software to edit your amplifier. Some prefer tactile. While the FM3 can technically do that on device, Fractal's UX truly suck. Hopefully they fix that for the next gen!
@@Taylor___ That's not tactile though XD Having Axe-Edit on mobile would still be quite terrible UX, just like now. I'm talking about physical knobs, like real amps have
Nahh sorry the “unique” take on the distortion sounds are not my thing, having said that it has some innovative features but just listening to my FM3 or Marshall rig now I don’t see the HK as an amp for me.

Also a switchblade guy - played thrash with it, now playing doom! It's brilliant!

Dragon and Cobra were THE amp when I was really getting into guitar but I've never tried one. Curious now!
I owned a Dragon, my biggest regret was selling it, by far my Fav tube amp
I regret selling mine as well. I was hell bent on using rack gear at the time. Now I'm using AxeFx 3, but there's still not a Dragon model yet. @@bradhill935
Really great demo. Hughes & Kettner might be the only "big" amp builder I have not tried yet
Definitely a brand that has their own sound. I’ve owned a few of their amps and all were really good…had a duotone, Triamp mkii and trilogy
