When Distributist mentions the Paradox of Tolerance at 31:11 and how the bread tubers love to use it, he's referring to a propaganda comic used often by Leftists to justify their want to censor and pre-censor non leftist thought. It is actually a subtle transmutation of Popper's quote into the thesis of Herbert Marcuse's essay Repressive Tolerance.
It's propaganda because it deliberately cuts out the lengthy middle portion which clarifies conditions when it may be necessary to suppress, saying
"In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by use of their fists and pistols."
The goodreads quote of this also conspicuously uses an ellipsis in place of this middle portion.
I think this portion of the Paradox being left out is telling as the radical idealogues on the far left do in fact come much closer to meeting the conditions in this middle portion; denouncing all argument as deceptions of, say, white supremacy, the patriarchy, capitalist elites, etc. and will rise to the level of violence over rational argument.
Reframing Poppers quote to smuggle in Marcuse's idea that all ideas emerging from the right of himself should be suppressed and even pre-censored in publications, etc, so the idea can never manifest in the Reactionary's mind is a clever way to subvert a liberal idea and disseminate a fundamentally Marxist idea into popular use by ordinary people.

The notion that repressing a reactionary idea will prevent it from being manifested "in the reactionary's mind" doesn't sound like a "fundamentally Marxist idea." Marx argued that ideas are a consequence of the economic base of society. A society founded on chattel slavery, for example, is naturally going to see arguments that slavery is "natural," "humanitarian," etc. propounded to serve the interests of slaveowners. The way to prevent such ideas from being manifested in the mind is ultimately to abolish slavery as a mode of production. Hence why we can read pro-slavery writings today and react with amusement and disbelief at concepts like "drapetomania," and also why you don't see modern reactionaries forming groups arguing that slavery is economically superior to capitalism.
Liberals by contrast tend to exalt the power of "reason" (whether wielded by pen or sword) to eradicate "bad" ideas, the latter being portrayed as coming into being merely due to ignorance rather than due to the objective economic circumstances humans find themselves, including the division of societies into antagonistic classes. Religion is a good example of this: Marx and Engels saw it as the consequence of man's lack of control over his environment. By contrast, Enlightenment-era liberals like Voltaire and Volney tended to portray religion as the product of centuries of charlatans and tyrants duping the people. This doesn't mean Marxists don't think religion can serve the interests of frauds and ruling classes, but they don't think atheist propaganda, by itself, will do away with religion.

@@IsmailofeRegime The problem is the Marx had zero experience with the things he complained about. Ism is defined as just an idea. It’s a mini religion - ideology ,a strict adherence to authority dogma or doctrine. Ism is not freedom of thought , freedom of opinion. Logic , reason , science or Objectivity . Ism is a symbol replacing intelligent dialogue .Marks inverted the Bible ,the United States Constitution and he’s playing the game of backwards using the dialectic . It’s what a child does. Marx did not want to work and criticized people who did ,but never really worked himself Therefore he’s not qualified to weigh in on labor or market economics at all. Tell
Me . What’s the plan after the revolution ?Im curious . Or are you following someone who is tricking you with big words and secular dogma ?

    • @IsmailofeRegime
      @IsmailofeRegime Рік тому

@@lalaboards Whether you think ideology is a "mini religion" or not is irrelevant. Marx's argument is that ideologies, like religion, arise due to the material conditions men find themselves in. In a society divided into antagonistic classes, the ruling class seeks to disseminate its own ideology and portray its economic system as eternally valid, moral, etc.
To say "Marx did not want to work" is nonsense. Marx worked as a journalist who was forced into exile due to his revolutionary activities. After the International Workingmen's Association was established he quickly ended up its leading figure, having to help coordinate the activity of workers' organizations across Western Europe. He was also an author on multiple books. To say he "criticized people who" worked is utter nonsense and shows your ignorance of Marx's views.
And unlike utopians such as Robert Owen and Charles Fourier, Marx disdained to write up "plans" for how society "ought" to run. His purpose was to explain why capitalism is ultimately as temporary on this earth as slavery and feudalism were, and that communism will be the outcome of capitalist development. Any "plan" will be the task of the millions of workers to solve as they actually deal with the practical matters of the transition period between capitalist and communist society. To quote Marx, mankind "inevitably sets itself only such tasks as it is able to solve, since closer examination will always show that the problem itself arises only when the material conditions for its solution are already present or at least in the course of formation."

@@IsmailofeRegime Too bad it always fails. The only half success has been China and that's only because it allowed capitalism into its economy. We also know religion and rituals (thanks to archeology) pre date civilization and appears to have played a huge role in our evolution. It has nothing to do with the material conditions men find themselves in, but rather the start of reasoning as humans attempted to explain and understand the world around them beyond just an instinctive level. We are seeing it now begin in some Ape societies as they are evolving. That's why humans, as a majority, seem to always need something similar and will replace it with something else. Before you do the "it's never been really tried" part of the argument, I'll point to Vietnam where the final stage was reached twice and failed twice. It results in hunger and death not to mention the purging of everyone that thinks differently. I'm curious how many more millions of citizens of various countries must die from it being attempted before it can finally be deemed a failure?

Another great show! I had not heard of "The Distributist", but I like his thinking and plan to look up his work. I listened to this on my phone last night, and a few relevant (IMHO) quotes that came to mind during it were:
Religion: "Whether or not you believe in God, you must believe this: when we as a species abandon our trust in a power greater than us, we abandon our sense of accountability. Faiths… all faiths… are admonitions that there is something we cannot understand, something to which we are accountable. With faith we are accountable to each other, to ourselves, and to a higher truth. Religion is flawed, but only because man is flawed. The church consists of a brotherhood of imperfect, simple souls wanting only to be a voice of compassion in a world spinning out of control.” ~Dan Brown
"Irrevocable commitment to any religion is not only intellectual suicide; it is positive unfaith because it closes the mind to any new vision of the world. Faith is, above all, openness - an act of trust in the unknown." ~Alan Watts
Identity politics: "Do you see yourself as a victim of the world, or do you see yourself as the world?" ~Alan Watts
"It's never what people do that makes us angry; it's what we tell ourselves about what they did." ~Marshall B. Rosenberg
"People who prefer to believe the worst of others will breed war and religious persecutions while the world lasts." --Dorothy L. Sayers
Covid: "As our own species is in the process of proving, one cannot have superior science and inferior morals. The combination is unstable and self-destroying." ~Arthur C. Clarke
The woke: "Those who are convinced they have a monopoly on The Truth always feel that they are only saving the world when they slaughter the heretics." ~Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
Trans: "Every major horror of history was committed in the name of an altruistic motive. Has any act of selfishness ever equalled the carnage perpetrated by disciples of altruism." -Ayn Rand
"Beware of altruism. It is based on self-deception, the root of all evil." ~Robert A. Heinlein
Thanks if you made it this far. :)

While today's is a welcome diversion, we cannot underestimate how critical those detrans stories are and especially since they are ABSOLUTELY detested by the trans activist and UA-cam as a platform.
      .
I have no doubt that Mr. Benjamin is ever watchful of how his content is perceived by those who would wish those conversations never take place. Benjamin walks a pretty fine line, so as to get what needs to be known out there for all to hear, but in a way that makes no compromises nor takes any prisoners in the process.

Dave is a unique and valuable thinker, but NRx, despite its undeniable strengths in critiquing democracy, is plagued by a fatal flaw. And that flaw is the freedom of expression. If NRx clamps down on forms of expression that potentially threaten the stability of society, then society will stagnate, decay, and ultimately be conquered by other civilizations that had the courage to explore dangerous ideas and grow. But if NRx allows people space to explore ideas, then it becomes functionally indistinguishable from liberalism, and opens up the very same door that it accuses liberalism of leaving open for the Woke. I believe that this paradox will be left unsolved, and it will ultimately kill the dissident right. Thus do I declare myself the first post-NRx liberal.

it could be useful to point out liberalisms flaws, in order to find ways to fix them. Or make them better.
Catholicism has something that isn't common these days.
It's an institution that exists outside of " markets" and exists outside of "politics" and exists outside of " "popular culture". Plus it's always been around. So it's utterly stable. It has traditions that are small and enacted physically, the cracker, the hand motions, the sitting, kneeling, and standing, the phrases spoken. It has widespread common phrases for each sin committed, hail marys,
It has statuettes, trinkets, and rosemary's, crosses,
My point is, it has its reality, in reality.

"it could be useful to point out liberalisms flaws, in order to find ways to fix them. Or make them better. "
The issue is that those flaw are not fixable, they are fundamental structural weaknesses in the bed-rock of Liberalism, to "Fix" them would undo Liberalism at its core.
There is no fixing up liberalism to face reality when one of its basic ideas is that everyone is equal, be that physically, mentally, emotionally, or any other category you care to name, when that is not true, never was true, and never will be true. If you do "fix" this, so that laws and political power accounts for the fact that equality is a myth, then Liberalism just withers up and dies.
This is just one of the flaws at the base of the structure of Liberalism, there are others equally unfixable. Liberalism must be rejected whole-sale, with something different replacing it, and maybe a few things can be salvaged, like equality before the law.

35:00 ish. Popper's paradox of tolerance is often misrepresented, as it is again here. What makes an open society is that everyone can have their opinions and all ideas can be raised and discussed and their merits and foibles can be debated with society as a whole honing its philosophy rationally. Allowing for the open discussion of all ideas is tolerance. The intolerant however, in his formulation, are those who ... well let me let Popper state it himself:
"In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols."
Of course this statement is somewhat gameable as people can argue over who started being intolerant first but one philosophy has taken the game to an all new level by claiming that debate and even having ideas in conflict to theirs is the same thing as using fists or pistols - that is they have denounced argument but have portrayed themselves as still tolerant by accepting a rainbow of fringey contrafactual opinions for which they have already authored volumes of (impenetrable) "arguments".

I don't think this guy is talking about liberalism is he? When I listen to Americans I really am not sure what the meaning of their descriptors are.
From my perspective there is no liberal conservative dichotomy.
The Tories in the UK are not conservative, they are right of centre liberals who believe in leading by example.
The Labour party is (was) a left of centre social democratic liberal party.
Conservatism is liberalism with the handbrake on, it's not a defendable political philosophy, more a clinging to tradition and establishment for security.
Margaret Thatcher was a right of centre liberal. Tony Blaire was a Post Marxist, not a Social Democrat.
Two countries divided by a common language as a famous Irishman once said.
Here in Australia the right of centre Liberal party is in permanent coalition with the Nationalist conservative party.
I think we've all forgotten what these words mean.

“Liberal” is usually used to refer to a Lefty position, though what I tend to mean by “liberal” is the “classical liberalism” philosophy of John Locke, a political philosophy based in natural law and rights, individualism, and freedom which casts the role of the government as prioritizing the protecting of human rights rather than the socio-economic supporting of its people.

I was about to write a long reply, but couldn't be bothered, Burke and also Scruton can explain a defendable conservative ideology for you, and liberalism, marxism, progressivism are really just different clothes fro the same thing, if you doubt it , study the actual policies that they (currently) all line up behind and against. There may be superficial differences but they all do the same thing.

I'm an atheist, but studied a thought control tactics, which is a broad subject, but understanding authoritarian cult tactics is an understanding of culture.
What our cultures share with our Christian religious heritage is our masses holding a moral authority that supercedes the state. Hopefully enough of us are still willing to give any state authoritarianism the old Protestant middle finger?

There is a place for the margins and a place for the normal. Compassion that overrides that is not real compassion, it's weakness, a failure to stand up for what's right.
