@@MooncakeEnglish I came from a Training background. Mostly adults and very academic (Project- and Change Management) Luckily with a lot of people factors. Meanwhile, I had to "lower" myself to a children and teenager level. I am out of nature (and aptitude tests) very flexible and adaptable, but still missing a lot of techniques, like classroom management, performance measuring and and children motivation. I am humoristic, enthusiastic and interesting, but moving between different classroom abilities, specially when mixed and constantly changing, remains a challenge. Your videos and approach, amongst others, many others, brings a deeper perspective. Different learning styles, is very important to me and to have a wide variaty of "tools and techniques are vary important. Trail and error is your master guide!. At my current English Center they want a "learn by being exposed to words and sentences. That is not enough for me. The gap is to big from Vietnamese to English.But I try. It frustrates mee, and I will soon look for another job, where proper ESL principles are followed. I am too academic to believe in " learn by heart" and one day it will come to you. Thank you for the opportunity to share with you.

Great ideas for teaching larger groups. I am used to teaching small groups, 6 ESL students at the most. This year I have 13 first-graders who are so behind in learning to read because of the pandemic. The methods I have used to teach small groups don't work as well with this sized group. I have been drawn in to support the teachers at the local government primary school with 2000 learners here in a rural school on the outskirts of Lilongwe in Malawi. The first language is Chichewa but the National language is supposed to be English. I say 'supposed' to be because English is passed down from poorly taught teacher to poorly taught teacher. The teachers want to me to assist with their learning of English, which I am really happy to do, but I am not a teacher. Last week I taught a Standard 4 English class to 93 pupils aged between 9-14yrs with a huge variation in attention/comprehension/fluency and literacy. It was great fun but I think I can be put to better use. All the pupils could do with some support: to take the top students further and to get the ones who are struggling up to speed. I have the time, the energy and the commitment to helping them, but I have no idea where to start. Smaller groups would obviously help but other than that I feel completely lost. I am doing an online phonics course with Queensland University of Technology (!) which is teaching me the theory and basics of phonics (so far anyway). It seems to favour play based learning which is how I stumbled on you through my trawling through the internet. My biggest challenge is trying to pitch the lessons at the right level for the age group and ability / abilities. If you have any suggestions, thoughts or ideas I would lap it all up. Yum yum yum! I'm so glad you have been enjoying the channel and that it has been helpful 😊 Regarding letter names, I usually start to introduce them once students are blending diphthongs and digraphs. By that point students are usually very confident with the letter sounds, can blend cvc and four letter words and starting to write and spell words and sentences themselves. I hope that helps 😊
Thanks so much for this. I have been working in a training centre and they've been getting us to teach the letter sounds and name simultaniously - for 'phonics' - and I can see the negative effects! They are confused and had low retention of the letter sounds because they were not prioritised. I will be bringing this to their attention. So, when is the right time to teach the letter name, if now is not the time? What about teaching phonics to preschool? I find they cannot grasp the concept of teams.
Hi C0rnf1ake, thanks for watching! I hope things are going well where you are? In preschool I usually start teaching the letter sounds at around 4 years old. In some parts of the world this is considered quite early, but, I'm based in China where there is a lot of pressure to learn things quickly. You will find that most of your students won't quite grasp the ideas of blending until they are around 5 years old. Regarding the letter names, once students are confident with the sounds and are blending you can start to teach the names without too much confusion. I hope that helps!
Very helpful but am teaching pandemic kids who skipped two grades and I have only a Friday( once a week) to do so, if you have any tips on my situation. To be clear it’s not a school it’s a once a week class for poor and orphan children

Different curriculums will ask you to teach a different number of letters, for example, Jolly phonics teaches in. groups of five. However, at our school students start learning letters at a very young age so we learn one per week. I would think about your students and what you think would be best for them. I hope that helps! 😊
Hi there, thanks for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! When teaching the letter sounds, we teach the phonemes which is the smallest unit of sound. If we are adding a vowel sound to the end of letters such as /f/ then it can lead to mispronunciation when the letter /f/ is paired with a different letter like in the word 'friend' which can make it difficult for students to hear the word when blending. Most especially in synthetic phonics where every sound in a word is important, students need to know the correct phoneme. In Analytic phonics, you will likely see more word families (such as /at/ and /en/) and consonant blends taught (such as /br/ and /cl/). But when it comes to the letter sounds, the smallest unit of sound (phoneme) is still taught. I hope that helps 😊

Almost everyone I know still teaches the names first. My school wastes the first year teaching the name of the letter then in the second year you have to try to reprogramme the kids to say the sounds.

I'm so glad you have been enjoying the channel and that it has been helpful 😊 Regarding letter names, I usually start to introduce them once students are blending diphthongs and digraphs. By that point students are usually very confident with the letter sounds, can blend cvc and four letter words and starting to write and spell words and sentences themselves.

Thanks so much for this. I have been working in a training centre and they've been getting us to teach the letter sounds and name simultaniously - for 'phonics' - and I can see the negative effects! They are confused and had low retention of the letter sounds because they were not prioritised. I will be bringing this to their attention. So, when is the right time to teach the letter name, if now is not the time? What about teaching phonics to preschool? I find they cannot grasp the concept of teams.

In preschool I usually start teaching the letter sounds at around 4 years old. In some parts of the world this is considered quite early, but, I'm based in China where there is a lot of pressure to learn things quickly. You will find that most of your students won't quite grasp the ideas of blending until they are around 5 years old.
Regarding the letter names, once students are confident with the sounds and are blending you can start to teach the names without too much confusion.

Very helpful but am teaching pandemic kids who skipped two grades and I have only a Friday( once a week) to do so, if you have any tips on my situation. To be clear it’s not a school it’s a once a week class for poor and orphan children

How many sounds to you teach per class when you start from the very beginning?
Hi Jo, thanks for watching! It really depends on your students age and language level. Different curriculums will ask you to teach a different number of letters, for example, Jolly phonics teaches in. groups of five. However, at our school students start learning letters at a very young age so we learn one per week. I would think about your students and what you think would be best for them.

Why don't we add a vowel sound on the end of vowel sound, e.g f fa could be for family

When teaching the letter sounds, we teach the phonemes which is the smallest unit of sound. If we are adding a vowel sound to the end of letters such as /f/ then it can lead to mispronunciation when the letter /f/ is paired with a different letter like in the word 'friend' which can make it difficult for students to hear the word when blending. Most especially in synthetic phonics where every sound in a word is important, students need to know the correct phoneme.
In Analytic phonics, you will likely see more word families (such as /at/ and /en/) and consonant blends taught (such as /br/ and /cl/). But when it comes to the letter sounds, the smallest unit of sound (phoneme) is still taught.

Hi Eli, thanks so much for watching. It depends on where you would like to teach. In China, you need to be a passport holder from a native speaking country, have completed a bachelors degree and TEFL certificate. If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend it!

Almost everyone I know still teaches the names first. My school wastes the first year teaching the name of the letter then in the second year you have to try to reprogramme the kids to say the sounds.

What’s the benefit of getting little children to compete against each other in your ‘match’ game? Making children compete at a young age in a learning environment is irresponsible. Children should be encouraged to co-operate together and not compete.
