I'm no rotary guru, but I'd say to start and get it mechanically as clean as possible. Oil and coolant diagrams can give you insight on the different orifices' intent. After it is mechanically as clean as possible, then consider coating it with a rust preventative- especially on sealing surfaces- and wrapping it in a VCI bag with desiccant packs to keep it pristine until the next time you need the part.. from a cleanliness nerd
My engine builder painted my housings and irons, I think he used an enamel spray paint, it's been on over a year and still looks fine, it's quite common with engine builders to paint the engine in various colours options
