      @@joshuaschmitz Wrong, Mark Cramer is using the correct *Their in the correct context.
      Their: Means belonging to. Example "This must be their car."
      They're: A contraction of They Are. Example "They're getting a new car."
      There: A position/place. Example "They got into a car accident over there."
      Using all three examples in a sentence>
      *They're* putting *their* new car over *there*.

    You know what heats and cooks everything also without carrying a grill? Fire! I know it's crazy all you have to do is grab some wood and give it a spark and you have fire. It's the greatest thing.

    #1 The Kodiak Canvas Sleep system when packed is bigger than a large family tent. Why not just pack a 5 person tent and have more room. If you want a single tent, get a bivvy sack.
    #5 I go backpacking to get away from arseholes blaring music.

    • @utubeape
      @utubeape 8 років тому +8

      I agree, especially when you are driving a pickup truck, the tent size isnt a problem, a 2 man tant would be half the price and pack smaller. I like the ventilation though.
      People who take technology such as speakers camping are not getting the point of camping!

    • @TheOtherSteel

      I'm an Aussie - and a swag is bulky and big, but it includes a (very comfortable) mattress, and you can roll your sleeping bag/pillow up in it as well. They are typically warmer and more waterproof than a large tent, and are made out of heavy duty canvas (i.e will last you a lifetime). They also setup in 30s-1min ready to sleep.
      They are designed for single/couples travelling in a 4x4/overlanding type travel. A tent/bivvy isn't really comparable and is designed for a different purpose - lighter weight, thinner materials & you must keep your bedding seperate.

      Swag is good cause blankets, pillow, mattress, and the swag it self are in one bag. normally tied to the roof so you dont give a shit out big it is cause it's not inside your 4x4

  • @erikgranqvist3680

    The only remotly interesting was the baloon. I could see something like that connected to life-boats and vests.
    Could also be handy for the alpine rescuers in North Sweden. It can be near impossible to find someone up in Lappland - and you cant count on working phone services either.
    The bivybag was laughably clumpsy - why have a 1-man system thats bulkier than a system for 2 persons including sleepingbags?
    The grill to big and to clumpsy for taking with you - and to small for home.
    The filtersystem was to expensive.
    The boom-box... well, I am not one for violence. It is wrong to hurt other people. But if someone started something like that when I was out camping (not happening - I never camp out anywhere else than in the middle of the woods), I would seriously consider to put that speaker in a dark bad smelling place on the owner.

    • @Raven1024
      @Raven1024 8 років тому +3

      Filter doesn't seem that expensive, $60 base and then $30 every 300 gallons. Not not that bad for what it does. It's about on par with other filters that do the same thing, but are larger with less flow.

    • @ApocGuy
      @ApocGuy 8 років тому +1

      for now katadyn combi is still my No.1 choice.sure its big, bulky and not great for single person backpacking, but works flawlessly and has some 13.000 gal filtration rating.

    • @InDisskyS131
      @InDisskyS131 8 років тому +2

      I agree on most of your comment and thoughts.
      Might I add, why not solar strips on that balloon?
      The grill is completely ludicrous.
      One point we fully agree on is concerning the macrobox. I have only come across others once in my lifetime when camping. I assure you neither they nor I had any damn boombox on tow. Pretty sure I would be considering the same thing as you but I would make sure it was sideways.

    • @Raven1024
      @Raven1024 8 років тому

      ApocGuy It doesn't have a rating for viruses though.
      The ceramic element in that is good for 13,000 gallons, but the carbon filter is only good for 106.
      You could buy four individual of these for the same price as one of those and have a higher filter rating for destroying viruses.

    • @pk13910
      @pk13910 8 років тому +1

      +Raven1024 Seems like fear mongering. Has anyone using a current filter like the Katadyn, Pure, Lifestraw, etc had problems with viruses? Pretty sure if you are that concerned, you wouldn't venture out of your house.

      For you kid camping out in the backyard or his bedroom. lol Although the Balloon if not to costly would be nice for on the water. It would have to be considerably cheaper than a PLB they are now about $250 and they notify the Coast Guard your exact location and almost all have a flashing strobe as well. Even the really good EPIRB which sends a distress beacon to a SARSAT satellite which automatically sends a Search and Rescue distress signal to the entire network and it has also has built in GPS so they will find you in a hurry. They also have a strobe and even the Class II can be activated by water. They are about $450 for a good one maybe a little more for a Class II.

      The issue of it being radar reflective while just at 150 feet is rather useless unless someone is already in your immediate vicinity and is actually looking for you and knows what they are looking at.
      I've worked and done a lot of travel since 2005 and I have seen balloons in some pretty far out places.
      My response " That`s interesting " and I keep moving.
      Just seeing what looks like a shiny party balloon in a far out place doesn't mean someone is in danger.
      150 feet is too low to be a serious consideration if you are relying on a radar reflective device to give your location away.
      Quite laughable actually - Who the hell goes camping and gets lost in a dead flat area ? I mean- REALLY ?
      There is a reason that a helicopter at 3000 feet gets lost on radar at a certain distance from the radar installation.
      It works line-of-sight and anything continually giving off reflections is filtered out or the radar beam raised so they aren't detected.
      Same principal applies to Alarm systems with PIR units that are able to be set for non-detection of pets moving around the house.

    *Canvass Swag Tent:* A cross between a 1-man backpacking tent / bivy sack with a self-inflating mattress, and at least four times the volume and weight of both those things together. Seriously, I've never seen such a bulky and heavy 1-man system.
    *Velocity Grill:* Seems like a pretty nice piece of gear for car camping. I like that it can efficiently burn wood that can be literally found almost anywhere rather than having to depend on gas canisters. Were I in the market for a new camp stove, I would definitely give this a serious look.
    *RescueMeBalloon:* Given the ever-expanding range coverage of wireless coverage, I'm not seeing much use for this down in the contiguous 48. And "GPS is useless"? Since that's a fucking _satellite_ signal, short of one's device running out of juice, I really wonder where on the surface of this planet your GPS can't give you a location. Can someone tell me what I'm missing, or is that simply deceptive advertising?
    *Pure2Go:* Despite what this promo would have potential investors/buyers believe, there are many filtration systems on the market (and for less money) that will eliminate everything right down to and including viruses. Filter or purification, whatever gets the job done - there's nothing new here, results-wise.
    *MacroBoom:* For jerk-ass backpackers who want to drown out that irritating peace and quiet or those annoying bird songs when they're enjoying the great outdoors. And as an added bonus, you can ruin the experience for other backpackers around you who do like those things.

      I have an 8-man dome tent that packs into a 9 x 9 x 24 inch bag. According to Kodiak's website this 1-man tent packs into a 12 x 12 x 36 inch bag. It also weighs 17.5 lbs and costs almost $300. I bought my tent on sale at Dicks for 80 bucks.

    • @stipepredanicpredavanja5938
      @stipepredanicpredavanja5938 8 років тому

      About the RescueMeBalloon: I think that by "GPS is useless" inventors wanted to warn people that GPS isn't omnipotent savior and that it isn't a communication device - it helps in positioning you on the face of the planet and that's it, you may or may not have a location of the nearest house/motel/station, you cannot send that data to someone etc.
      On the other hand, the product tried to get their funding on the Kickstarter and failed. So it's not a real available product.
      Also, I don't think that Velocity Grill is something special - except for the car camping. In every other situation it's either a too heavy overkill or a big underperformer.

      Having grown up in the mountains of Idaho I have noticed a severely drastic change. You can't even go to a calm lake anymore without some group of people who are terrified of silence blasting their shitty music on their boats as loud as possible or at their campsites even in the early mornings and late evenings. I have had to stop going to my most beloved places because it has become an epidemic of these disrespectful douche-bags (also of just people in general), they have pushed us into the the furthest remote locations as possible just to get away from them. To make it worse only less than 20 years ago everyone camped in modesty usually in tents or a small trailer at best. Now if music is not your problem these once peaceful places are packed with an over-sized rv's or trailers with 50 dirtbikes and fourwheelers zipping around constantly at everyone else's expense.
      I know that my complaining will change nothing but I am heartbroken watching what has happened here and knowing that things are only going to get worse. Technology has blessed us and ruined us at the same time because nobody can just spend a few days in silence of solitude or the company of others.

    Kodiak Canvas Swag Tent: way to heavy and big for a single person tent! 17.5lbs!!!
    Velocity Grill: gosh, who wants to carry that huge thing AND power supplies? Maybe fine when camping with a caravan but backpacking? forget about that!
    SOS balloon: seriously a VERY good idea and probably cheaper than EPIRBs - yet someone has to see it while an EPIRB will call for help via satellite.
    Pure2go: basically the purifier Sawyer should have built in the first place - very similar design, just a few improvements
    MacroBoom: why?!

    Swags are perfect for 4wheel driving and are far better than tents for traveling because they are so quick and easy to set-up and roll back up, They are pretty heavy especially the double swags I've got, plenty of room inside though.

      If you have a bivy tent, aren't they used mostly by hikers and backpackers? That 17.5 (!) pounds would be too much for them. And are there not roomier tents that can be used by 4wheel drivers? The easy open and set up pop tents come to mind. It was a good idea and had a great look to it, but it needs to be constructed of a lighter fabric that is durable enough.

    The swag is very popular in Outback Australia but its not made for hiking etc. Its made for throwing in the back of your vehicle if you are going away overnight or for a few days, prhaps mustering cattle or an event that means you needs a bed..Most people like a comfortable bed and tailor it to suit them. Its usually waterproof, insect proof, wind proof and warm and we don't have any large predators like cougars, wolves and bears.

    I'm an Aussie. I've had a swag for almost twenty years. at the moment I have one that can sleep two people. we don't call them a swag tent its just a swag. they may be big and bulky but we would rather be comfortable in the wind rain or under the stars. plus you just put it in the back of your 4wd anyway and its always made. check out oz trail or Burke and wills. everyone has one or has used one. the one in this video isn't even an Aussie brand!

    • @M3rVsT4H
      @M3rVsT4H 5 років тому +2

      Not that it really matters, but in the Aussie bush, rain isn't often much of a problem. So the earliest swags were just a bedroll, you'd have it on the back of your horse and you just roll it out and it's ready. Leaves you more time to get the fire going and boil your billy. Modern swags evolved to keep the many small annoying and deadly creatures out of your bed and worst case scenario, even keep you dry enough to get some sleep if it rains. Not suited to backpacking, but still ideal for motorbike touring.

    • @TheMasturCheef
      @TheMasturCheef 8 років тому +4

      I think it's a good idea, but there are already systems out there that are way more advanced and more effective and reliable.
      There are EPURB devices which are smaller than the balloon and will work more reliably. The only thing they need is a satellite connection, which I would argue is easier to get than placing the balloon visibly.
      Some can turn on automatically when dropped in water (e.g. for sailers).
      They will contact radio / satellite emergency networks, act as a positioning beacon and if they have a GPS they will also transmit the exact location to the emergency networks. You can add personalised information like emergency contacts.
      From these global networks the "mayday call" will be forwarded to local rescue operations and you *will* be rescued in the fastest way possible, no matter where you are in the world.
      In contrast, the balloon will only stay up so many hours and in that time somebody has to be within a distance of a few miles *and* he has to notice the balloon *and* he has to get the hint. Then *this guy* still needs to inform rescue operations, which he may or may not be able to do quickly.

    • @timg375
      @timg375 8 років тому +3

      TheMasturCheef
      Maybe add a SOS beacon to it to transmit on a radio frequency. The problem with EPURB is cost, and not easily usable in mountains where loss of site to satellites
      is common.

    • @the_mighty_bearcat

      I like the balloon for the fact that it is cheaper than most electronic or satellite systems; can be seen by people that may not be monitoring electronic systems, who might be able to render aid; can be used as a non emergency beacon for campsites; and the balloon may have an added psychological boost for those who do deploy it in an emegency, as something they can see and know is working, as opposed to a purely electronic system, a boost which may be essential for survival.

      I've been looking for something like that though. I camp all over the country and a lot of times I'm just looking for something I can unroll and sleep in. This is something between a tent and a bivy. True, it's really built too heavy to be practical for anything but car camping, but has the right idea. A bivy can get pretty flipping annoying if the trip is more than a few days the weather sucks. A tent is great if you're someplace for a few days, but it can add a lot of time when I'm just spending the night before moving on. I've setup my one man tent a couple hundred times and can do it fast, but after a few days I just dread the breakdown and stuffing/rolling bag, pad and organizing all the related crap - be nice to just roll and go.

    #1: Umm, no thanks. I'll just sleep in a traditional bedroll that I can make for $110 instead of the $300 MSRP.
    #2: It's a great concept, but it means you'd have to have hardwood chunks to get the kind of efficiency they talk about and that's just not feasible. If it works well with pine or fir, then it might be worth the $160.
    #3: No damn way. The more parts there are, the more there are to foul up when you need it the most. I'd rather stick to a pencil flair gun and the portable smoke beacon that Creek Stewart teaches you how to build here on UA-cam (SOS: How to Survive - Making a Mobile Signal Fire).
    #4: Bullshit. A 2 oz bottle (virtual lifetime supply) of potassium permanganate is around $5 on amazon and it kills everything in under 5 minutes. Don't like the taste? Add a bit of drink powder to the water.
    #5: No. Just, no. You wear that shit and anyone who sees you will wonder why the fuck you're even out in the scrub instead of back in the city where you belong.

    I'm a big fan of the Pure2Go purifier for the fact that it also kills viruses and not just bacteria. It also prevents the growth of bacteria and viruses from growing in the purifier itself after use which is a major problem with many on the market. Of course some others on the market have a big base due to the time they have been around, but they do not all kill viruses like Pure2Go. If you take a look at their website they list out all the testing information as well that comes directly from the lab, so it's definitely not just fake information.

    Love how people are talking shit about a speaker. If you are close enough to other "campers" to hear them then you aren't camping. You just pitched a tent in a parking lot essentially. Dont have the audacity to complain about noise when you put your tent 15ft from others. Jazz and classical go great with nature by the way. Love how humanity has shunned any individuality. Can't ride a bike, hike, camp, and do anything without some douche telling you how your doing it wrong (even though the "right" way has no basis in logic)

    • @the_mighty_bearcat
      @the_mighty_bearcat 6 років тому +4

      Not to sound rude, mate, but the basis in logic here is that most people who go camping in the wilderness do so to get out into a world of natural sound, peace & quiet. This can be reflected in the upswing of popularity & copycatting of UA-cam videos and channels based on wilderness survival and camping that lack speaking, and sounds other than nature, as a branding style. So it makes little sense to develop and market a rather large (macro) boombox to this demographic. It makes even less sense to list it on a 5 must have camping gear list, as click bait to make ads profit. While the boombox is designed well, and surely has useful applications in both urban, rural, and wilderness settings, the ad itself, which depicts people carrying it around mostly on day-hikes in the wilderness, probably does not ping on most camper's "must haves" lists effectively.

    • @whechi
      @whechi 6 років тому +2

      The Mighty Bearcat I won't be buying it. While I enjoy music on my trips, that looks too heavy. Point is all you people hating on it are posers and imposers. Poser hikers trying to impose on others joy. My top five list is not your top five list and all of UA-cam is click bate, get over it. I'm not out there for a day hike, I'm out there for weeks on my bicycle and in the woods so I tend to get bored and listen to music, podcasts, or watch TV on my phone. Most of the comments are how all these "hikers" would confront someone with a speaker one way or another and that is not what being a hiker is about at all for anyone. Hiking, backpacking, camping, ect for me is to escape from reality which mostly includes society and the people like this within. If anyone came up to me to impose their opinions on me in the middle of nowhere, they better pray I'm already in a good mood. That's not some UA-cam threat that's just a cautionary hypothetical to help you understand why it might not be such a good idea to tell people what to do especially when no one else is around.

Mu 7X7X5 foot dome tent weighs far less than that, is dry, comfortable, ventilation, a rain fly if needed and has a hell of a lot more room than the Kodiak thing! It's sized for 3-4 men. Even my single tent is bigger and far lighter than the Kodiak. Granted, neither one of them has a built in mattress, but you can buy small ones like that that inflate by themselves and still wont weigh that much. I looked it up the kodiak tent and they go for around $230.00 What a rip off!
    -- I like the idea of the "Rescue Me Balloon" but I don't see it for sale any where. Seems there was a KickStarter for it in 2014, but 5 years later... nothing?!
    My only gripe about it is you can't use it in a Red Wood or Sequoia tree forest. Those trees grow to be more than 150 feet tall. No one would see you. Also, how long does the balloon last once inflated?
    -- Pure2Go doesn't seem like a bad thing. And it is actually for sale. They seem to run from around 20 bucks to about 50. Not a bad thing to have in a real emergency situation, but I would still boil the water afterward if possible.

    For the American car campers. Do yourself a favour and buy a swag (Kodiak sleep system)
    I've had mine over 10 years now, I've slept in -5c in it in a clear open paddock. I've slept in + 40 both times I was comfy. It becomes your cocoon of sorts. I roll my clothes, pillows (have a double), and blanket all in mine and I'm ready to go away at the drop of a hat.

    That's a basic swag...

      Umm, no it's not. A basic swag is a waterproof canvas tarpaulin you wrap you and your sleep pad in like a fecken burrito.

    Where do I find the _"few pieces of flavored hardwood"_ while camping for days in the High Sierra with your grill? And how does something born in the Australian outback get named after the Kodiak brown bear of North America? Wouldn't _kangaroo_ be more appropriate for a sleeping pouch anyway?

      Exactly, the internet is the place to express your ignorant opinion, not in the wilderness. Easy to talk tough here where the laws of man apply, rather than in the wilderness where they really don't. There will be no moderator, law official or ability to delete your comment out there.

    If cycling I would use a small speaker, but also try to be considerate of others. If hiking you can use a lighter pair of headphones, you don't need as much hearing as when you are cycling, and you won't disturb others. Just be aware of you surroundings.

    The swag is not a ‘tent’. Its a portable bed. Nearly all stationhands and owners etc own one and it will usually last their whole life. It is used when you need to sleep out while mustering for a week or long trips mending fences, checking feed and water supplies etc or lastly when bush partying where the nearest accommodation is hundreds of miles away. They are largish, heavy etc and not meant for hiking or recreational camping etc. They are carried in station vehicles and might occasionally be carried on a horse if necessary though those are usually lighter ones. It is a work item primarily, not recreational. Necessary to keep out snakes and other creepy crawlies plus rain etc.

      Patriot Jefferson It could be, depending on what bedding etc you are using. Australian swags don’t usually have legs but that would be useful in very cold weather to get you off the heatsucking ground!

    The last fucking thing I want with me when I'm out camping is a fucking portable boom box!
