TCM Wetness Wicking & Shift Issues
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2022
- One common problem with our Sprinter vans concerns the transmission control module connectors get wet under the driver's seat. If you find this too, the round connector and seals on the transmission should be replaced. This connector should always be replaced when servicing the transmission so you can see that in a few of our other videos. Today we only talk about the immediate fix, cleaning the connectors. Without addressing the seals at the transmission this problem will return.

Thanks for always mentioning the tool type and size.
Good one! 👍
What were the transmission issues that led you here? What was the result to the cleaning? Darn amazing the ATF crept that far up the wires. Did you also need to change the plug at the transmission?
The plug was changed a few hundred miles ago and I think the oil was already here, just hadn't started being a problem until more recent. it may need to be cleaned again before it stops spreading the oil already in the wires. The van recently started needing a poke to get out of park and a couple times seemed stuck in 2nd gear until restarted. This van also has shift flare, 430k miles, and not driven 500mi since pandemic started. So it has some 'personality' all over the place. LOL
Did this happen on your nice van? That thing is too pretty to have problems! All the shifts on my van are quite soft & I get a bad flare on 3-4 shift unless I'm into it pretty hard. I'm not sure if the soft shifting is normal or not. When I swapped engines, I did a full service, plug replacement, whole 9 yards on the trans so I know the fluid is good. Maybe imminent failure?
My MAF sensor is faulty, maybe this is like GM vehicles in that it can affect trans shift schedules & line pressure? I'm going to order a new one thru the website.
Shift flare can go on for years without getting worse. It's definitely not imminent failure. My daily driver is seen at the end of this video but the work was actually being done in our #2 that has red swooshes where mine has blue. Our 'red' van has shift flare also but there is no fixing that, just live with it until rebuild is otherwise needed. I was in red* van recording Mike driving my blue* van at the end of this video. Cleaning did solve the odd new symptoms.
Should one disconnect the negative battery terminal first before disconnecting the connector at transmission and or TCM connector?
Not necessary.
I thought that for electrical parts you should use a electrical cleaner? More safe? For electrical components
Or You used because it was what you have at the time?
I find electrical cleaner is not very effective on motor oils.
Looks like time to replace the Transmission Adapter Plug Housing. I'd use CRC Electronic Cleaner about 5 bucks a Walmart but I guess brake cleaner will do the trick in a pinch or if you don't want to run to the store ...
Agreed, this van actually had a transmission service with new plug not long ago. I think the oil was already there and just beginning to show a problem when we serviced the trans. Probably should have started with the TCM connectors for troubleshooting* but the trans service was due anyhow.
Can you swap out a TCM from a 2005 to a 2006 if the part is identical, but the H/W and/or the S/W dates are different?
Yes, I offer loaner ECM sets so you can confirm the trouble stops with replaced parts and keep the van running while getting your ECM repaired. You can* leave a replacement ECM set installed indefinitely but there are some advantages to putting back a repaired original. When I get my set back I refund $700.
Excellent explanation and description! Would this contribute to p0715 code?
P0715 is not a valid code. Your van didn't give that code as it is not in the van's vocabulary. The code reader you are using is misinterpreting some other code. We have links to compatible code readers at floridavanman.com/links and video showing how to setup the AP200 correctly for a Sprinter.
@@FloridaVanMan thanks so much for your reply!!
I got an i carsoft scanner, was able to delete the code and drive van home
The code read from i carsoft is p2203 - speed sensor 3 faulty. I will try to check on this tcm and its oiliness
Thanks very much!!
Thanks so much for your input!
I couldn't find any oiliness in the tcm.
I intermittently getting error and it causes the van to go into limp mode. Van has started stalling while driving, showing "can" fault p240a, implausible engine speed error. Esp and wheel trouble light come on when stalling... and idea of what to check first?
I replaced my transmission connector and was very careful when fitting lubed up new seals/connector and torqued to 7nm after a week it’s still leaking, it even seems worse, any ideas what it could be ?
Hey guys you think you could do a video on how to do a cooling system flush? That would be great! 🤙
Why are you flushing? We do it a few times with Dawn dishwashing liquid in this video. ua-cam.com/video/2EPz-Qp83zc/v-deo.html
@@FloridaVanMan the reason I'm flushing is because I'm not sure if the previous owner switch the fluid and my van has 50k right now so I just wanna be on the safe side 🙏
@@FloridaVanMan should I just leave it alone? The color doesn't look bad it has a tone of greenish
@@fabioalmeida9281 I would definitely leave it. Coolant gets exchanged inadvertently when servicing hoses and water pumps. Our coolant should be HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) which lasts at least 5 years in the engine under normal operation. Since your van has only 50k I think it was more of a museum display. Haha! Some of us put that many miles on the first year. I know I did.
@@FloridaVanMan great! Thanks alot!!
Hey Bill . What is the other big module under driverseat at the back ?
Central timing control if you have electric locks, trailer light module if you had factory towing option, yaw sensor for everyone, maybe more. Picture and part number would help identify which module you have.
Mine will not down shift from drive will not move like hand brake is on. Let it set goes back to working, then does it again. When it happens, no forward or reverse.
Sounds like a clogged transmission filter. Feels like the van wants to go but is chained to the floor??? Full service with filter, including draining the torque converter, recovered my van from this situation. We have a couple transmission videos.
Here's a stupid question... Is it really safe to spray all that brake cleaner on the module and connector ends? I would think that liquid might work itself inside and cause other issues?
"Safe" is not a simple yes or no question, but I'll say "mostly yes". Brake cleaner is Tetrachloroethylene and will damage plastic and circuits if exposed too long. However Tetrachloroethylene evaporates very fast. Be careful not to spray painted surfaces or breath brake cleaner. Contact cleaner would be a better option, made with isopropyl alcohol.
@@FloridaVanMan Cheers!
Did this happen because the seal on the transmission electrical plug went bad?
it happens when the 13 pin connector starts leaking, and isn't replaced soon enough.
Yes, correct. The plug at the transmission was replaced not long ago during a full transmission service, but the oil on connector symptoms hadn't started until more recent.
What symptoms lead you to look at that?
Weird shift issues, sometimes wouldn't come out of park without a poke, sometimes shifted at really dumb times. Seems OK now but not driven much.
Would this scenario put me in limp mode with a P0715 code?
Wet TCM connections might put you in transmission limp mode which is much more severe than other limp modes. P0715 is not a code generated by your van. Get a compatible code reader that can communicate with your van. Using generic code readers on a Sprinter will only mislead you. We have two good code readers linked here. floridavanman.com/links/
Trans fluid can wick all the way up that far?! O_o
Yep, it is a fairly common problem with these vans.
Will this issue throw a code?
Yes, it can create short circuits across several pins causing many different symptoms and unpredictable. This is the first place to look any time our transmission does weird things.
Same problem yesterday with abs/Esp lights on the dash.
Code 2225-1 fault at control module a4.
When I did my engine swap I noticed tcm plug did not sit in donor trans as snug as original one, will swap over today
Thanks Bill
