Bran castle is advertised as fictional Dracula the vampire castle, not as castle of the real voivode named Vlad III Draculea, or Vlad the Impaler. As some wrote its true that voivode (duke) Vlad the Impaler had the Poenari fort wich also true is in ruins today, he also had 2 or 3 other forts, one of them also ruins at Bucharest, there is only the underground more or less intact. Vlad was founder of Bucharest, as city there, can see today a small monument and the ruins and underground of his previous fortress.
Poenari is considered an important fortress, its in the Carpathians on the border of historic Wallachia and Transylvania on a high peek (thats the beauty of the place that you can see on one side Transylvania and on other Wallachia), near the river Arges that is also seen in some fictional movies. In truth this area felt several earthquakes since Vlad's times , probably one of the reasons why its in ruins, another reason would be it was abandoned 1 or 2 centuries after Vlad. Poenari is not so far from Transfagarasan, the known mountain pass road. Despite Vlad winning several battles agaisnt the ottomans, their numbers were still many times more, for a small country like Vlad's the ottoman empire had alot of resources and always resuplied their army with gold and troups. Its said that Vlad's wife jumped from the Poenari fort to where the Arges river is today and so came to be a river there. Also its said that the paesants that were living near the fort made a plan to extract Vlad from the fort , they turned the horse shoes from a horse around, and took Vlad from the secret tunnels and ride away on that horse. When the ottomans saw the tracks they looked like someone came to the castle not someone left, so they never chased after him. Despite proven results and skills as general he was out of resources, he went ask suport from his christian friends(?), king of Hungary, Mattias Corvinus, who from what we know was half romanian from his fathers side, John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara). Sadly because of political games, he was staged as he would have made peace with ottomans, a fake letter was sent to the pope with his sigil , and he was imprisoned for around 12 years .
After this time they realised the ottomans were becoming a great threat, or some say voivode of Moldavia Stephen the Great asked Corvinus to release him. He returned to Wallachia but his new rule was short, maybe he was weakened in the prison, or maybe he was betrayed by some boyars that feared him and didnt want his return. The ottomans claimed they killed him in battle, however many great romanian voivodes were assasinated.
He lives on in memory, or not only ? :>

I would love to spend the night during a sleet storm! I'm always curious about when and how modern acouterments such as electricity and indoor plumbing were added to these ancient structures. Did they have gas light in the 19th century? Do they still collect the slops in bed chambers overnight and throw it out the window in the morning? How about a central heating system, is that possible?

actually, it is not the castle of Dracula. Poneri Castle was called Dracula's castle, that is where he really liked to be.

Vlad Tepes son of the Dragon, never claimed this castle for his home.He did spend sometime there for a while, just as long as one of the battles which he leaded and won as Count of Wallachia, against the Ottoman Turks took place outside Brasov in the Carpathian mountains. So he was somekind of honored guest there who helped stop the Turks from entering the place of Wallachia that we nowadays call Romania,n used the castle for his residence while staying there(a period about 15 to 20 days approx.)

When I first visited Bran, some 20 years ago (shortly after the iron curtain came down), they had big informative signs up explaining the history of the castle, and stating that Vlad Tepes had once laid siege to it, but been stymied by the thick casle walls and so had eventually given it up as a bad job. When I returned the following summer, the same sign had been altered, carefully leaving out the part about Tepes never actually getting into the castle, and suddenly they were selling Dracula-themed gifts in the gift shop. It's a LOVELY castle, far more charming and photogenic than Tepes's actual castle, but the Dracula/vampire links are pretty much all made up just to get tourist money.

OK, so for all you out there, I'm gonna make it simple:
    1. There is Vlad Tepes(familly name: Dracul, not Dracula), who had a series of castles in Romania, amongst which Bran Castle. He lived back in the 15th century, and he was real.
    2. Dracula is a sci-fi character imagined by Bram Stoker(the author of the novel Dracula), character that was inspired by Vlad Tepes. Actually, Dracula's castle is not in Brasov or Targoviste or anywhere else. It is in Bistrita-Nasaud county of Transilvania, in Pasul Tihuta, most of the novels action takes place in Bistrita-Nasaud county. He describes the Castle that actually exists in Pasul Tihuta (cca. 35 km from Bistrita city). Read the fking novel, and stop mixing Vlad the impaler with Dracula the vampire.

+paull dven Dracula is real man because Vlad Tepes is called Dracula. Vlad Tepes is a real live vampire in 15th century. He had murdered so many people for blood & he uses blood for sauces & drinks.

In popular folklore of the Carphato-Danubiano-Pontic area we DON'T have vampires! Strigoi aren't vampires and DO NOT suck blood, cause they are immaterial beings, toumented souls of the death!

it's rather stupid to say that "strigoi suck your blood" (1:02) :))) Death is a transition to another state of existence. Strigoi are in continual conscious torment.I think you should know better popular beliefs and Balkans folklore rather than talk about them in a superficial way and spread lies as someone did in this film.
