- My expedition to the Far North of Russia continues in the suburbs of a ghost town Vorkuta. I expected to see completely abandoned towns, so imagine my surprise and shock when I saw that some people still live there...

Man I love the internet. When I was a child I would look at the world map in books and wonder what life would be like in those parts of Russia where no one ever visited before. And nowadays we have people like you who provide us with videos and content. Thank you so much for all you do. It's very interesting! :) And I agree with you that part of the village with abandoned houses looks creepy lol would make a great film location for horror movies.

it's a famous place, millions of people died in Vorkuta... We even have a saying in Lithuania: Utiutiu an Vorkutu, na tretem putiu (in translation, train goes to Vorkuta on a third rail pass.)

I’ve always been fascinated by cold climates, as a child I spent hours reading about Svalbard, watching documentaries about Greenland, and so on. I find this part of Russia beautiful beyond words, even though the decaying state and abandonment looks sad. I would love to visit and stop for a few days in the last village you showed, the people there look friendly and warm. Thank you for giving the opportunity to see such wonderful exotic places!

Human density is correlated with average temperature. Cold place like this is more or less similar with very low population. Low density favors individualistic personality.

My mum grew up in the Northen village in the 60s. My grandad was a coal miner there. I heard so many stories about her childhood. Thank you for showing me this place
I live in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, and I often tell people that it can be depressing during the winter because of the lack of sunlight, the constant cold, the lack of entertainment. It's the largest city, yes, but cannot compare to large cities like Los Angeles or Chicago. This video helps to reinforce the idea that no matter how bad a person thinks their situation is, there is somebody somewhere that is experiencing it even worse. This place is extreme. I think that seeing all of the abandoned structures might make the feeling of isolation and depression even worse. This is not the first video I've seen about this place, but so far this has been the most interesting. Thank you.
Hi Eli. I’m from Philippines where climates are only wet and dry. I was amazed how people there just abandoned their houses leaving everything behind because here in the Philippines most residents cannot afford to buy their own house. But I don’t think I can also survive on extreme cold weather like that because an 18 deg temp already gives me chills. Thank you for doing this kind of vlog. It’s like a free travel around the world. As a child, I lived in the PI and other tropical countries. When I came to the States, I made the mistake of moving to New York. The cold of winter was actually painful to me. I only lasted a year.

Always remember that ethnic Russians conquered these lands by force and repressed the indigenous population. Even now they are racist towards the natives. No different from how white Americans systematically and brutally removed the Native Americans.

I remember how in Soviet times newspapers wrote about the development of these places, the names of cities in the film were on the front pages of newspapers. And people moved here because it was possible to get housing quickly and there were high salaries. How much life has changed, and not for the better!

There is beauty in these places. Monuments of hope and strength of the people who built these buildings. They show a dignity some wealthier places don´t have on earth. Even if it was an error to live here it is a source of serious reflection about the values of life. Great video! Nice people shown in it. Thank you for showing it .

Gulag prisioners built these buildings. 70,000 of them lived in these areas in 1950s - more than today. It's a truly dark place.
Those buildings were build by the labour camp prisoners! There is no beauty, there is dark history, blood of the political prisoners who died there and it's a manifestation of brutality of soviet regime. Send prisoners to brutal arctic climate to exploit the nature, to dig coal and profit. An abomination.
It's sad to see all these buildings empty. Makes you wonder what happened to all the people that once lived there. Thank you for the tour. Please take care of yourself, and be careful in your travels.
I live in rural Pennsylvania in the United States and aside from the very extreme temperatures, this place very much reminds me of where I live. The population has been shrinking here for a long time because the job opportunities (including coal mining) have decreased and it’s becoming difficult to find healthcare services in some places. It’s also not uncommon here to have our last snow around the middle of May. This year it’s been getting colder fairly early and we will be seeing almost freezing temperatures overnight this week (last week of September/first week of October). In contrast to that, our summer lasts at least 3-4 full months and it can get up to 100 F/37 C on occasion.

Wow! Vorkuta is socially interesting. I use to live in a very cold climate too. -20 F and something -30,-40F. Yes mosquito’s are very bad during the few months of summer. I can relate. I think I want to start a video blog showing the abandoned places in our country to educate just as you have. A toast to your health and wellness miss Eli! I just started the video and seeing the woman talking about her life there makes me want to give her a standing ovation! So many of us, spoiled privileged brats complain about shit, but many people lead such difficult lives and they’re still grateful. They still smile. Much love and appreciation for such characters. Hello Eli I live in sunny Puerto Vallarta Mexico....and I started to watch your videos a few weeks back and I love the way you show us the other side of the world and its culture....I would never imagine that in some places they can get up to minus 70 degrees celcius ....(here in puerto vallarta our winter can get 15 degrees and we are frozen ourselves) anyway congratulation on your videos I will keep watching it.....

Wow, such a great video! I live in Edmonton, Alberta. We are used to very cold winters here too and they're much longer than many of us like, but it is nothing compared to this place. In a way those frozen buildings look beautiful. Perfect for some apocalypse movie.
I liked how clean the snow was and how there was no vehicular noise, unlike Edmonton. (Go Oilers!)
Large parts of Russia is too cold like -60 c. Canadians don’t live up north in the territories.

Thank you for these true and practical reports of life in Russia. we are people who live in tropical or subtropical countries, never image how people live in such cold weather conditions.
I feel amazed by the beauty of nature, the peace and death are married. This is a poetic view of something I will never reach. Maybe someday, I might be able to visit these places but the probability is very low.

This city will rise up.... I don't mind living there. Less stress, socialize with people you know and love, kids grow up with manners and culture.....unlike in big cities where you don't know if your kid gets shot or fall into drugs.

It's ironic that here we have a town with all these empty apartments and there are people in Canada and the US that cannot afford to buy a place to live, or worse live on the street. I found some of the buildings rather lovely--it's really too bad that nothing can be done to save these old Soviet towns. Thanks for the fabulous insight into a different world.

It would seem like a good idea to consolidate the remaining residents into certain areas and to focus on making those areas as nice as possible. Tear down the old buildings to make the place look less abandoned.

Russia is definitely my kinda place. I've always loved chilly and frozen weather. I wish to visit this country atleast once in my lifetime
There's Canada, Norway, Sweden and Finland too that face freezing winters. Not too exclusive if I say so myself. Russia also has some grim history with my country so visiting them to feel winter would be least of my concerns.
Russia is a very beautiful country indeed. To me, it has always been like a magical place.
Russia is a beautiful country and has lots of things worth seeing i think, however due to between 10-11 wars between Russia and my nation i do sad to say feel reluctant to actually see Russia for my own eyes.
These towns of the north are almost like small worlds of their own with only a railroad to connect them to the rest of the world, while it is sad that so many people have left and so much now is abandoned there is strange and bizarre beauty to it as well and hopefully there might might still be a bright future for these towns if only the right people can come along and see something that those before have missed.

New subscriber and I just loved this...warm thoughts from the U.S.
I was born and lived for the first 18 years in a sub tropical climate. When I moved to find work, I ended up in some arctic conditions some of the time. While it was totally foreign to what I knew, I adjusted to it and came to like it more than the high humidity hot climate. I only go back to visit family but I wouldn't live there again. I have been so far north that there was no day, just night, for about three months of the year. Then later during the summer, it was the opposite. All daylight and no night for about 6 weeks. The winters were very cold, dropping down to -40 degrees. But even then, I was able to adjust and sometimes worked outside for up to a half hour with only a tee shirt on. You can adjust and get used to it. I would imagine the people who live in Vorkuta feel the same way about the weather. The social conditions are another story. When it was the USSR, the government kept everything running. It was probably running at a loss but overall, the country made up for it from the economy in the warmer areas. In a free market country, the government doesn't control or support the economy so every enterprise must make its own profit to survive. This is what has happened there in Vorkuta.

This perfectly explains, how a completely free market economy wouldn't work in country as inconvenientle located geographically as Russia is.
Captivating comment. I'm like you used to be, living in a sub-tropical climate, it has 4 seasons but is dominated by high humidity hot summers. I enjoy the lush green vegetation mostly in the spring and fall, but sometimes i miss the dense heavy cold air and the big ceiling skies of the North, it makes everything feel bigger including life itself. Hot climates tend to make everything feel small and cramped including one's life and breathing isn't as satisfying since hot air has less oxygen. I grew up in a continental climate that was colder. Based on your picture i think you are more stocky and large boned that I am you probably had the genetics to live in cold climate. I am more the thin and long type, not good for keeping the warm in.

Your analysis of government subsidized economy vs free market is interesting. Although you are aware that the west is running a ponzi scheme right from the FED that extremely worrisome as it can not end well, and there is little time left on the wheel.
I think the best is somewhere in between those two systems and the central bank must be nationalized and under government control, not private bankers as in USA.

I live in north-eastern Brazil, just 3 degrees bellow the Equatorial line, so it's hot throughout the year in here. I simply can't imagine how does it feel to live in that cold conditions.

Hi Ely !! I think in this kind of city the people know each other and support each other more, and sure when they need to talk they always find somebody to talk... I think really they never feel lonely, it's the opposite in big European cities. We live in wonderful conditions, but we don't speak with each other any more, even my neighbours in the house I live in we don't talk each other, only 10 apartments and everybody avoids talking each other not even hello and bye, not a word, they look at each other as complete strangers, and we live in the same house for years... so YES, I would love to live in this cold and Human city !!!

While watching, I was wondering much the same. Would people form close bonds because of the conditions and isolation? There would probably be some hardcore hermits too.
Some 10000 spread over several settlements you would hardly call a city and in other European towns of this size people also speak to each other. Certainly a city of several million is more anonymous but it also depends on the neighbourhood and it is also always up to you: You can greet others, you can join a club and make friends also in big cities, if you like.
... and Workuta is still in Europe by classical definition.
I think the same way. Working ( Not Living) in a Huge city of Millions of people causes people to be Rude driving, Standoffish, and Generally Non Caring for their fellow human being. That's what I've noticed. Living in a small Lake town people are Friendly as their Dogs. Usually. I does seem Living around less people overall is just a better Lifestyle.

Eli, Your videos are unique and so well produced. Clearly there is no future for life in the far north when there is no economic purpose. If these people have not moved for whatever reason, it must make more sense for them to congregate in one apartment building rather than remain keep services to half-empty buildings with no occupants.
Fascinating and scary, too, I would think, for the people living there. I could tolerate harsh conditions to a point, but here I don't believe I could. Gods bless them.🙏🏽

This was a very interesting vlog, Eli... I often think about similar questions and stories when I shoot images of abandoned homesteads or towns here. I have lived in the northern US Plains where the winters are bitter but never this far north.
I think what you witnessed in the region you shared is normal history in action. You witnessed the normal migration of people as needs and resources change.

I love your series about the Far North! It is strange to see those ghost towns and to try to imagine how life was 20 years ago. There is so much SPACE and open land there. I am sure it would be possible to develop it into a great place again. With enough energy one could build greenhouses and grow food all through the year.

Yes, you can grow vegetables inside. Just burn coal for heat add to generate electricity for the artificial lighting. Can you imagine what it would cost to grow a tomato that way?

@@nojeep2726 There are pot growing operations in Fairbanks Alaska that has serious lighting and heating demand but they must be making money or they wouldn’t be doing it. You might want to talk to one of them about growing tomatoes and see what they think it would cost you to grow them in Siberia. Unless you just have money to lose, Which would be a different story.
The best thing for all the people who live there would be to all live in the same buildings and make make use of the same buildings this way they would not have problems with frozen water and it's easier to keep repairs on one building then several buildings. Thank you for your videos Eli.

I was going to take my grandson to Russia after his high school graduation, but in light of what has been happening, we are going to stay in the USA.
