I’ve been fascinated by Steep Holm since the first time I saw it when i was 11. I have visited it once on a 12 hour day trip but have never seen all the way around it. Thanks so much for doing this.
It is a fascinating place with loads of history.. they have started doing trips there now were you stay on the Island for 12 hours.. thanks for your comment 👍
No problem. Like i said I have only been once when I stayed for 12 hours. I’m hoping to visit again in September. I’ve subscribed to your channel anyway. Stay Funny ( the ant bans, loved it!)
Nice video. I have visited the island many times in the past with the old Bristol Queen. It was a very sedate journey compared to your boat! 😀 We nearly always circled the island before landing. Do book a visit. Probably be next year now.
At 03:33 into the video you mentioned the westerly end of the Island mate. That’s called Rudder Rock! If you decided to go over to flatholm it’s a lot further than it looks and you’ll be crossing the main channel for all shipping going into Newport, Sharpness and the Bristol ports! The big car carriers are normally doing nearly 18 to 20knots by that point so make sure you check the traffic because you will just be a small dot. There’s a small slip on the north east side of flatholm but I do believe you still need permission to land and if you do decided to go around watch the wolves rock on the north westerly side! Anyway nice videos and I’ve subscribed! Just a word of warning but please don’t take this area of water likely, it can be very dangerous which I’m sure you know.
Thank you very much for the advice 👍 I know this water can be dangerous, I always get my mate to come with me in his bigger speedboat.. just in case anything happens. Sounds like you know this stretch of water very well. Thanks for subscribing to my channel
@@WestonSuperMan good idea with the extra boat. The area inside the islands will be on Ch12 which is Bristol VTS and the pilots will call up between the holms giving information which will be handy! Yes. I’ve been sailing in the area as young child like my ancestors (Pill Pilots) did and I love my history, especially the Bristol Pilots which traditionally all came from Pill. I was only talking to my mother about flatholm yesterday about an old story…the Pill Pilots would go ashore on flatholm and get blind drunk and leave the cutters at anchor. One particular time the wind got up and young boy who was left to watch the cutter drowned! The channel has lots of history and was renowned for being very dangerous!
@@PillSharks wow.. sounds like you have a lot of stories about the channel. I’ve recently read about pirates that use to hide on and around the islands.
Love it iv looked across at the Holm's for a few years and always wanted to do in kayak..but that channel is a bit naughty..my plan was to take it over when their...kinda zombie retreat...edit..looked from Burnham on mud
Thank you for sharing with us your video, it looks amazing I wondered what it was like closer up as I've only ever seen it from beach, can you get on the island or is that forbidden, look forward to see your video, take care xx
Ive been on there, many years ago, maybe 92, I took my son also. it was a trip on the Balmoral or another boat similar I think it was a paddle steamer, maybe the Waverley. Anyway, the whole Island had a really strong smell of seagull poo poo, there were eggs everywhere near the footpaths so we had to be careful where we we stepping. the ants were bigger, saw a dead rabbit that looked as if it had been gutted, which I thought was strange. there was a canon and a post office, the post office was in use at the time I believe.
Wow.. I bet that was amazing going there on a paddle steamer 👍 When I went there were loads of birds, the place was covered with them. I really want to go on the Island next and have an explore. Thanks for your comment 👍
I think you might be confusing the Holms islands for Lundy mate. Lundy has a pub and a post office and has always been visited by the campbell steamers until they left the channel and the Waverley and Balmoral then took over some years later. Flatholm had more on it I believe with a stationed lighthouse but Steepholm was a battery which goes back over many years… I think I’m correct in saying that Flatholm is under the jurisdiction of wales and steepholm under Somerset. I’m sure nothing was running out to either Island in the early 90s.
@@PillSharks hi, it was definitely Steepholme (I’ve never been to Lundy) and there was a shop/post place there, at least I was told this when I was there. You could send a postcard from there and I definitely went on one of the mentioned boats, most likely the Waverley. The boat stopped away from the Island and a smaller boat took us there. Then it went over to Cleavdon. It’s so long ago. Maybe it was the late 80’s. I don’t think these trips were common back then and it was always weather/tide dependent. We left from Penarth Pier. Hope this helps. Just found this info. Once there, the island’s visitor centre sells Steep Holm local stamps, which can be used, alongside a Royal Mail stamp for onward transit, on mail posted in the island’s postbox. The first set of Steep Holm stamps for such use is believed to have been issued in 1980, and further issues have continued to be produced through to the 2010s.
@@jarrahdrum I stand corrected. I’ve just found a photo of the balmoral anchored off steepholm and it looks like a 80s/90s photo. My father was on the Bristol Queen cambells paddle steamer in the 60s and visited all the places…you can still see the large timber dolphins in Cardiff bay where they were moor up to. He was the only Englishman on her so all the crew would leave the ship and turn the generators off with my dad being left all alone in tiger bay..not a nice place in the 60s as a 15 years old! His cousin was a Bristol pilot and had a lot to do with the paddle steamers like the Waverley and balmoral so I’ll ask him about the holms island’s next time I see him!
