"Death Letter", also known as "Death Letter Blues", is the signature song of the Delta blues musician Son House. House's 1965 performance was on a metal-bodied National resonator guitar using a copper slide.
Lyrically, the song is about a man who learns of the death of the woman he loves through a letter delivered to him early in the morning. The narrator later views her body on the cooling board at the morgue, attends her funeral, and returns to his home in a state of depression.
00:00 - 00:58 | A part from the original Death Letter by Son House.
01:00 - 07:56 | The White Stripes edition of the song.

loved the Son House intro, adds a cinematic touch
Jack was born in Detroit in 1975. Son House died in Detroit in 1988 and is buried here. I like to think their paths crossed, they breathed the same air and Son House lives on.
This, to me, is up there as a best performance ever for intensity sound and feeling and just over all awesomeness. Love that song .
Completely incredible performance, the raw energy is overwhelming. And thanks Jack, for introducing me to Son House! :)
Jack White, Led Zeppelin, and Nine Below Zero were my gateway into the Blues... the white stripes were the first of these bands that I loved and this shows why...
The reason I listen to Jack is because of his respect for the real blues.
This is so unbeliavably heavy
Bonus for having Son House footage at the beginning but I could do without captions. Thank you for sharing these 2 great Son House songs done by White Stripes
I didn't know that i loved her... till they began to let her down
