Whenever I hear this song, Field's of Gold and End of the innocence, it's the summer when I was 12 again. Right on the edge of childhood and growing up.
same. i miss my childhood days back in early 90's. my son love to hear this song. i was at his age when i listenes to this song. he reminds meof myself, when i was listening to this songback in early 90's.
I never knew this was Crosby until now. As a kid I figured it was just some one hit wonder guy who had Phil do the backup vocals. This is definitely a great song, underrated. Never heard it on the radio again, but it always stuck with me
After the 1993 NBA finals, they played a compilation video to the song. I thought it was one of the neatest things I’ve ever seen. I was so excited when I stumbled across the video because I had no idea what song was. What a great song! RIP, David Crosby.
What a magnificent duet by David Crisby and Phil Collins , they nailed it! What an Awesome song and many years later one of my favorite songs I Love listening to!
He has been gone for a year already and I have been a fan of his and Phil Collins for years since I started listening to this song all over again for first time since last year but he will be forever missed 💔 😢😢
David Crosby and Phil Collins were best of friends with each other and they had the best time record this song and I was thinking about how amazing they were and I miss him so much and I thank my lucky stars for being a fan of this song
What a magnificent song. It almost makes me wish to be back when it was out... almost. I'd say 1993 was the best year of its decade in popular music. Very well done David Crosby RIP and Phil Collins.
I remember this playing nonstop on the radio when I was 10. I assumed it must have been a huge hit. Looked it up on Wikipedia and it stalled in the 40s. Still a great song.
Great song! Great video! RIP, David. You are a Hero to many of your listeners who loved you and love you still. You are the true genius of song writing. And as far as I know, you never did "Cut Your Hair". Love you and miss you, Man. 😪
In the twilight of my Air Force Reserve career, this came out in the spring of 1993. First heard it in Denver, CO, then, This video is an absolute heartbreaker for those who experience family discourse. What a wonderful song.
CROZ: I wrote the lyrics for "Hero," and then I had a motorcycle accident. I had already met Phil Collins at the Grammys - he walked up and said, "I'm your biggest fan." I said, ''I'm your fan. You make great records." He said, "No. If I Could Only Remember My Name - I know every song on it." So we became friends. After the accident he came over to visit in Encino and showed me the music for "Hero." When I got ready to do Thousand Roads, Jan and I flew to London and stayed at his house and studio complex in Surrey to make the record. PHIL: DAVID HAS BEEN A HERO OF MINE SINCE I FIRST HEARD THE BYRDS. HE WAS THE ONE WHO PICKED OUT THE WEIRD, BEAUTIFUL HARMONIES. I ACTUALLY TRIED TO GET HIM ON FACE VALUE, BUT I COULDN'T FIND HIM. HE LATER TOLD ME THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE LIKED HIM THEN! WHEN I SAW HIM GO TO JAIL, I WANTED TO HELP BUT DIDN'T KNOW HOW. THEN AT ATLANTIC RECORDS' 40TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT I WENT UP TO HIM TO SAY HELLO, AND WE BECAME INSTANT FRIENDS. HE SANG ON "ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE" WITH ME AND ON "THAT'S THE WAY IT IS” ON BUT SERIOUSLY. WRITING "HERO" WITH HIM WAS A BIG THRILL. HE GOT VERY SICK AFTER THAT, AND HE HAD HUGE HOSPITAL BILLS AND THE IRS KNOCKING AT HIS DOOR, SO I GAVE HIM THE MONEY TO PAY FOR HIS LIVER AND KEEP THE IRS AT BAY. I JUST WANTED TO GIVE HIM SOMETHING BACK FOR WHAT HE'D GIVEN ME: ALL THE MUSIC. LOVE HIM DEARLY. - PHIL COLLINS {Voyage -Disc 2 -Liner Notes}
I knew that Crosby sang on Phil's album but didn't know the rest of that until now. Very cool of Phil to help out David in his greatest time of need. Also, thx alot for sharing.
Rest in peace to one of the all-time greats, David Crosby. Too many wonderful people leaving this life. Though, David, I know you will be at peace, singing and having fun with all the greats in Heaven. #CSNY were always a favorite of mine. Yet this duet by David and Phil Collins blew me away. I was reading lots of Hemingway for a college course at the time. EH is my favorite BTW. The #Hemingway spirit resonates with "Hero." ❤ "He never wondered what was right or wrong. He just knew. He just knew."
Very good song that didn't get the attention that it truly deserved, I didn't hear this song until maybe the Summer of 1994 and always thought it was another Phil Collins solo tune.
I got called out of a pep session 15 minutes before the school ended for spring break and was told to go home. I got home and was told my 32 year old brother took his life. I left to go to my daily after school hangout 10 minutes away and this song played the whole time. It's not a 10 minute song...
This video is kind of autobiographical in that this really was David Crosby's real life wife Janice. Idk who the child is. This is my favorite song of David's. The chords, tempo, simplistic tune reminiscent of the 1990's. Collins really shined here. David has sadly, left us as of yesterday. A once in a lifetime talent. I hope his mates make their peace w/him. RIP David.
I LOVE this song....David Crosby one of my faves anyway....but this was just him....and well Phil Collins too...which I loved....I cry when I hear this sometimes....I don't know why...kinda makes me think of my son and my dad....none of us went to jail but...idk this is a beautiful lovely song
Such a beautiful song. I remember seeing the video in the early 90s on VH1 in the early 90s. I didn’t know how significant to music David was at the time. I was only 12. RIP DAVID Crosby
It one of the song I don't stop listening. The first day I listened to it was in 1994 driving from Nebraska to Kansas it was on Ks radio station. When I came back to my home country Namibia the song brings memories when I was in the USA. Thanks to David and Phil.
IMO this and Too young to die (that follows on the album) are 2 among the greatest songs ever. Bought the album when it came out and still haven't got tired of listening to it. Love&Peace.

I know David Crosby made tons other hits with Nash and Young, but this one is one of my favorites. Rest peacefully David.

Anything but a One Hit Wonder. Its just this was bigger with the adults than the college age and younger.

This was an underappreciated song and video by two legendary rock/pop singers! It captivated thirty years ago and it still does!

Because radio was too busy playing Nelson and New Kids :(
My best friend sent me this song when I was in the Marines back in 93. We fell out of touch, but this song reminds me of her everytime I hear it.

a sad beautiful song
Rest in peace Croz. Very sad day.
It was one of those great stories
That you can't put down at night
The hero knew what he had to do
And he wasn't afraid to fight
The villain goes to jail
While the hero goes free
I wish it were that simple for me
And the reason that she loved him
Was the reason I loved him too
And he never wondered
What was right or wrong
He just knew, he just knew
Shadow and shape
Mix together at dawn
But by the time you catch them
Simplicity's gone
So we sort through the pieces
My friends and I
Searching through the darkness
To find the breaks in the sky
And the reason that she loved him
Was the reason I loved him too
And he never wondered
What was right or wrong
He just knew, he just knew
And we wonder, yes, we wonder
How do you make sense of this
When the hero kills the maiden
With his kiss, with his kiss
Well, it was one of those great stories
That you can't put down at night
The hero knew what he had to do
And he wasn't afraid to fight
The villain goes to jail
While the hero goes free
I wish it were that simple for me
Were that simple for me
RIP David 🙏
