  • Joe Wright, the BAFTA Award-winning director of "Pride & Prejudice," has reunited with his filmmaking team and his Academy Award-nominated actress, Keira Knightley, for another classic British romance, starring James McAvoy (BAFTA Award nominee for "The Last King of Scotland") opposite Ms. Knightley. Christopher Hampton (Academy Award winner for "Dangerous Liaisons") has written the screenplay adaptation of Ian McEwan's best-selling 2002 novel Atonement. Shot on location in the U.K., the film's story spans several decades. In 1935, 13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) and her family live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling hothouse atmosphere, stoking Briony's vivid imagination. Robbie Turner (Mr. McAvoy), the educated son of the family's housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony's headstrong older sister Cecilia (Ms. Knightley). Cecilia, he hopes, has comparable feelings; all it will take is one spark for this relationship to combust. When it does, Briony -- who has a crush on Robbie -- is compelled to interfere, going so far as accusing Robbie of a crime he did not commit. Cecilia and Robbie declare their love for each other, but he is arrested -- and with Briony bearing false witness, the course of three lives is changed forever. Briony continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.

For me...this movie deserves a 9/10. Don't watch the trailer. Just go and watch the movie. It was... I have no words. James McAvoy and Keira Knightley played their part until they almost touched perfection, in my opinion. And the story is mind-blowing...I even cried a little and had a...what the hell... I STILL HAVE a grudge on Briony.

This film is absolutely unique and heart-rending art. Films with a real sense, the ones that really grab your heart and deeply empathize with it, are the best in the world, and this film is one of them. A tragic story of true love, endless devotion and loyalty to each other until the very end. I have no words.

I cant bring myself to watch this movie, im a sucker for romance but when its really sad, and you have a feeling about whats going to happen at the end, and you hate it when the two main characters are pulled apart, and its not their fault ! you feel like screaming , its especially hard not to go and buy this movie when my two favorite actors Keira Knightly since "Pride&Prejudice" and James Mcavoy "Becoming Jane" are in it. two movies which i felt deserved Oscars ! Just like this one As well .

@bluefavorites You are wrong. She did NOT think she "saw" Robbie. She just "knew" it was him. I cannot empathize and even sympathizing is tough. I'd forgive her a few years of her teens, but waiting as long as she did was wrong, cowardly and damnable. She HAD the chance to fix her mistakes and didn't. She never stood up to Lola/Paul, never contacted her sister and never (to the reader's knowledge) set the record straight with her parents and/or Robbie's mother. Absolutely unforgivable.

The person who has made most impact on my life, was not a dude that took me to a fancy dinner, but a neighbor who prayed over me when I was a little girl, and I felt the peace of God. @AccioHHr She didn't murder anyone, that's the thing. She changed their fates, ultimately leading to their death. But as said, she was delusional. She really thought she saw Robby. I have no idea why it sounds like I'm sticking up for her but I'm not. People just need to empathize.
