I'm so glad it was helpful! You'll find that POTA park hunting is actually a good way to learn CW as well. It will help you become familiar with exchanges. Also, simply hearing CW will allow your brain to absorb more. You'e going to love the KX2!

I’ve been in agony trying to decide which radio to buy for extended hiking trips (to supplement/replace my beloved KX1) and you helped me decide firmly on the KX2. Mainly it was your comment regarding the roofing filter and receiver performance that made me realize I was splitting hairs over what’s really nothing to fret over in lieu of nearly twice the weight in the KX3.
I've had a KX-3 for a number of years. It's mostly loaded. Also have the PX-3 and the 100 watt amp. Took it to St Lucia in 2016 and made over 3000 Q's on CW with it. What a blast! Still want a KX-2, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. - KI8R
KX3 was released and appeared on the market in 2011 because I bought mine in the middle of 2012. The serial number of mine is 2630. Still one of my favorite QRP transceivers.
Nice video Thomas. Well done. I, like you, own both radios and love them both. I do find myself using the KX2 for the few activations I've done because of the size and the battery. Thanks for the review. Received my KX2 last friday - a second hand, at a very good price (for europe). Tried a SOTA activation in weekend with a random wire - the ATU just blows my mind. (failed the activation, after two QSOs my hands got so frozen that I couldn't press the PTT)
I bought an FT817 at a swap meet many years ago. Loved it to death. Ran a lot of miles on it. Eventually I sifted through many other qrp rigs like the X1M, the Flex-1500, and eventually a KX2. I honestly like using all of them. I've recently bought an X5105 and for christmas got my hands on an icom 705. Its hard to beat all the bells and whistles you get on a 705 but the KX2 has what I call simplicity. The layout reminds me of using a fancy calculator back in high school. I always wanted a KX3. Watched many many many dxpedition and sota videos of hams using them.
Like you, I truly enjoy exploring various QRP rigs and taking them to the field. All of them have their own character. The KX2 *really* hits a sweet spot for ops who are sticking to 80-10 HF operation. Truly a brilliant radio. And, yes, the KX3 is a phenomenal radio as well and I'm not selling it unless Elecraft comes out with a KX4. :)
Tom, I use a 26 ft. vertical wire and a 26 ft. ground radial and it works great! I regularly reach all four corners of the U.S. and Alaska from the hills of SE Ohio. Last summer I was at Alum Creek State Park, just North of Columbus and picked up France, England, Germany and Norway on successive calls, 5W, CW. The wires are my go-to antennas for hike-in park activations... de AF8E (John)
Great tip! I'll cut those lengths and give it a go. I like the fact that the radiator and counterpoise are the same length too which makes it a little simpler to deploy and pack up. TU! Thomas K4SWL
I just purchased the KX3 on Ebay on what happens to be the 3 year anniversary of this video! I really like both the KX2 and KX3 but their current factory ship times are pretty crazy! Glad I found one used :) Thanks for the video!
I owned both for quite some time, sold the KX3 and still have the KX2. The KX2 is my canoe, backpacking and go anywhere radio, less stuff I found to bump and bang and bend. On our canoe trips and hiking trips I never use a band lower then 40 meters. Being up in Northwestern Ontario repeaters are hit and miss and so sparsely placed that 2 meters is a non seller for anyone hoping to utilize it on any of these trips we do. Both have a place in or out of the shack, but for me the KX2 fit that bill, now I have my 3 band KX1 that is and has a smaller footprint that makes it even more handier. I have to add the KX2 internal microphone is also one of the other reasons I kept it for portable use. Cheers Fred VE3FAL
For Outdoors operators I suggest to get the KX2 if you plan to hike and drop the radio in a backpack. If you are only going to a picnic table or camping site get the KX3.

My KX3 has been with me across the USA and Hawaii. My one issue is the audio is not loud enough so it requires me to wear a headset which is easy to do. I have a small battery powered speaker I can bring along but that is just one more thing. Then I bring a LiFePO4 battery that runs me a few days in the field at 10 to 15 watts. Just a wire in a tree works well... or MFJ big ears for even better signal. .. again one more goodie to carry. Fun rig. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
The small speaker is one of the few criticisms of the KX3. Like you, unless I'm making a video of an activation, I use a Heil Boomset. Sounds like your KX3 is well-traveled! Cheers, Thomas K4SWL
Total agreement with your review. I owned a KX2 first and absolutely love, love, loved it. But I wanted 6 meters and I NEEDED 2 meters for ARES/RACES WinLink messaging. I couldn’t afford both and don’t have room for a separate 2 M rig. The KX3 became the logical choice. I sold the KX2 in a few hours, getting exactly what I had paid for it. The 3 has all the options.
Almost every time I've purchased a used Elecraft rig and sold it years later (KX1, K1, K2/10, K2/100) I made money on the transaction. These radios often do more than hold their value. The KX3 is a no-comprise performer, too.
Got them both. The KX3 many years ago after my K3, probably in 2014. Use it at my girlfriend's house, who is now a ham, with the 100 watt amp and PX3. Also use it in the car with the amp in the trunk for mobile ops. You can contest with that combination! Bought a used KX2 recently, and I didn't understand the need for it at first, but got a good price. It's amazing. It doesn't have the "big radio" feel of the KX3, but it does so much so well in such a small package. Having both is a luxury, but like you, I wouldn't get rid of either. 73 de VE3YT

Hi, Tom. Another great video. I have owned the kx3 but when the kx2 came out I sold the kx3 and bought the elecraft 100 watt amp and use the kx2 in the field and at home as my 100 watt base station. Also, page 10 of the kx2 manual shows using the bnc post binder with 25 feet of wire on both posts for 40-10 use. 73 Alan KZ6B

Great overview. I agree, buy both. These are the best QRP rigs on the market IMHO. Everytime I use a smaller packable model I miss the bands and modes they offer for a few more ounces. I love my MTR3B for sure but it is a compromise. The IC 705 is a serious challenge but the missed the boat with no tuner. Since I'm not a digital user, it's and expensive compromise.
I'm a dual owner also... bought the KX3 and had to have the KX2... I'm primarily a SOTA activator and i love the "simplicity" of the KX2 ;it's now my go-to radio. My Kx2 is configured with Tuner option only... without the ability to charge the battery in the radio.. that seemed like it would become a chore and I pretty much always run external LiFeP04 battery packs anyway... I don't think you mentioned the Audio quality difference between the two the Radios..... the Kx2 is the Winner in that regard..
Yes, a good point. The KX2 audio is much better than that of the KX3. In fact, I'm trying to eliminate harmonic vibrations in my KX3 at the moment--it's bad enough sometimes the encoder will move a bit. :)
Ordered my KX3 in December 2011, got it August 2012 started SOTA October 2012. Done 457 SOTA activations its now March 2024. Only mod I've done is make a new power lead for it as the original lead went a bit brittle and not so flexible anymore. Been a great rig and hope it keeps going longer so I can get to MG x 2. 73 thanks great review. I'm using an icom 705 and love touchscreen, watterfall and also that capacity to records qso's with the sd card . But no antenna tuner, no integrated microphone. Kx2 all in one and tiny. Tx500 from lab599 rugged one. God it's always like that 😅 ....
First of all great video. I had the KX2 first and sold it, now I own the KX3. I feel the KX3 has a quieter noise floor, much better to listen to. I use my KX3 and an amp for all my field days. LOL I leave my 100W radios at home.
BTW. I’m not sure why I think this as I’ve not been able to find any ‘timeline’ Unlike most tech, when the model number increases, it’s usually a newer model, but is the KX2 NEWER than the KX3?
I've owned the KX3 for several years now and it's an impressive rig.....however, I was at Pacificon in October and Elecraft was there, but no hint of an updated version of the KX3 with touch screen and band scope. For field work, IMO, my KX3 is way overkill for a simple park or peak activation. I owned at one time the Youkits HB1B qrp transceiver which was the "perfect" SOTA/POTA radio. My only complaint was it didn't have a built in auto tuner which, after 50+ years of hamming, I refuse to live without...HI HI 73 ~ k6sdw
@@ThomasK4SWL When I bought my KX3 the KX1 had just been discontinued....At Pacificon in October a vendor was selling the Xeigu G90 for $350 new....man, it took everything I had to keep me from buying the G90 at that price. If you were limiting yourself to SSB then which would you prefer? Do the extra filers in the KX3 do anything for SSB? 6m would be nice as well as 2m but they are not a necessity for me. And I'm not sure if I will ever have time to learn CW.
So if the 6M and the 2M option aren't a big deal, I would go with the KX2. Either radio would be brilliant and, I'm sure, the KX3 performance would be a tad better than the KX2, but not enough to really notice. I own both but tend to use the KX2 much more because it's such a great field radio.
I just picked up a used KX3 and I absolutely love it. But now a KX2 opportunity has popped up. I have the cash set aside, so I need to make up my mind. I do not have any SOTA opportunities in my area, so my primary usage will be CW POTA. Frankly, though, I think I prefer the KX3 to my IC-7300, primarily because of the filters and the pin diode t/r switching. Thomas - Regarding filters, do you miss the roofing filter in the KX2?
I do not miss the roofing filters in my KX2. I would, I'm sure, if I were using the KX2 in, say, a CW contest with really dense RF. If the KX2 is a good deal, I'd pounce on it! I have both the KX3 and KX2 and love both. Keep in mind: you easily could sell the KX2 later and likely get what you put into it. :) Elecraft rigs really hold their value.
I pulled the trigger yesterday on the KX3 Pack (includes ATU fac installed) w/roofing filter installed as an option, and I added the ax1 antenna with the 40m add on. I also ordered a photog back pack from B&H photo. Lowepro 450. So thx for the vids. Also, for those deciding which radio to get. Elecraft has a note on their website that there’s going to be a price increase in March. Didn’t say what was gonna change but I assume the kx line has to be on that list.
Both perform well. I use my KX3 strictly in the primary station. I use my KX2 strictly for portable. There's no way I planned on using 160 meters portable so why use the KX3 when portable. The KX2, by far, has a better internal battery. The batteries in the KX3 is almost useless. It's good for keeping the clock running. Make a few short Q's with the internal battery and you're done. No matter what internal batteries you use, they just don't last. If I had to choose one radio, I'd choose the KX2 only because of the limited choice for internal batteries. If you could use a LiPo internal battery in the KX3, then the KX3 would be my single radio choice. I hope if they come out with a KX4 with a built in pan adapter display and a GOOD LiPo battery, I'd sell both of my radios and get the KX4. "Are you listening Elecraft?" Barry, KU3X/QRP
Yes you can! Check out the owner's manual--it describes how to initiate it and where the numbers are silk screened on the front face. Works brilliantly!
I have the KX3. I wanted something to take RV camping and to grow a small home shack. I am surprised at how well it works. I'll probably end up getting the KX2 someday. KE8PAG
I pair mine with the KX3 all the time. It doesn't fit *inside* the KX3, however. At least, you'd have to modify it and I suspect if it could be done, it already would have been documented on the internet.
If you're referring to the folding knee board, there isn't one in production *yet*. There should be soon, though, and when it is you'll see it posted on QRPer.com!
I got the FT-891 a lot cheaper, got the 891 + Super Antenna and still had change over the Kx2 at least here in Europe. Can't beat having 100 watts when you need it either. I use either an 8.4 Ah LiFeP04 RC type battery or 45 Ah car battery depending how long I intend operating, the 8.4 Ah can keep me going for hrs at 100w SSB. Sure, I'm not going to be back packing with that setup.
It's between this or an Icom 7100 but I have to be able to TX on 11m with at least a couple watts for when I'm in a car club tour or visiting a new town looking for a good restaurant recommendation, and a Mazda Miata doesn't have room for a 2nd radio & antenna for as rarely & seldom as I'll be using it on the CB band. - As an Advanced class Op I should be able to utilize any radio I want so long as it's not off frequency, over-powered for the band restrictions, and am not producing spurious harmonics. I've heard that Elecraft won't provide any 11m conversion info, which is silly for a licensed Amateur, since I can legally *_build_* my own radio if I choose - so long as the aforementioned parameters are met. It looks like it's going to have to be the IC-7100, though the KX-3 was my preference.
You might check if there's a "MARS mod." Often, those are mods to transceivers that open them up to transmit pretty much anywhere. Some manufactures make it extremely easy to do. Others, not so much. I've no clue about Elecraft.
@@ThomasK4SWL I will but I've heard they don't so I'm already resigned to getting an Icom, which isn't so bad I guess, I won't have to install an outboard 100w amp and it might actually be easier to mount. Of course I'll ask Elecraft but having heard so many times that they won't, I'm not expecting a miracle - lol 73
So both work well, but the KX2 actually has a built-in mic in the body so if you forget your mic, it's not a problem. Personally, I'd go for the KX2 even though the KX3 is also one of my favorite radios.
@@ThomasK4SWL Thank you, that's very helpful! As a newbie ham, I'm actually quite glad that this isn't an easy choice even for experienced people. Means I've got something right! :) I'm mostly interested in SOTA (activating and chasing) and will probably have to use the same portable setup even when chasing from home. Lightweight is obviously good from a carrying point of view, but I don't want to compromise too much on ability/performance and, as a beginner, ease of use is also particularly important. Having a UK Foundation licence means that I'm limited to 10W, so at least I don't need to worry about whether I'd like a higher wattage rig or not. :D
@@sararassner in that case, I would lean toward the KX2. You can practically carry it in your pocket to a summit. :) The KX3 is super portable, too, but there's no good internal battery option for it. The KX2 makes for a fine home transceiver, too.
You said everything, nothing much to add. Maybe regarding the "almost the same" physical factor I would disagree slightly. To the weight and volume of KX3 you have to add power supply, regardless of what you used to take, as 8xNiMh AA cells in KX3 are worth less that they weight. Also you have to take microphone even if SSB is your secondary mode, but you don't want to cut this possibility. KX2 for CW and contingency SSB is completely self containing. Because of that I would be more keen to say that KX2 is less or equal to half of KX3 in terms of weight and volume. I have KX3 and for me this radio is somewhere between portable QRP rig and mobile rig but with limited power. It's too big for a backpack and to compact/low power for mobile or home use. When going mobile you can add PA to KX3 easily but this will give you 2k$ set, which is 3.5 times more than eg TS-480SAT... is it worth? I'm not sure.
Good points. The KX3--at time of introduction--was one of the more compact full-featured general coverage transceivers. The KX2 took that concept even further.
The Elecraft looks/feels like 1998 and they option you half to death. The end result seems ok but NiMh batteries? Fixed pattern mono LCD display? External panadapter? They need an industrial designer (like me!) to ditch the 1990's. I like its radio features, size, etc.....but everything else has me continuing to look around for QRP solutions.
I don't know. The KX2 is one of my favorite field radios because of its simple design, but deep feature set for my application. The display is easy to read, everything is one button or knob away, and it just gets the job done. The batteries are not NiMh, they're Lithium Ion and last longer than any other internal internal battery I've ever tested: a full 10 watts output for about 1.5 hours, then 5 watts for three hours--all of heavy use. @@ThomasK4SWL That is a fair assessment. Please pardon my mistake on the battery chemistry, clearly I got some unreliable information at some point. The capability of the units are rather impressive - I mainly desire integrated pan-adapter functionality. Although that is an additional load on the battery so perhaps a compromise for many users. Maybe the IC-705 and KX3 could get together and have a baby. Both are almost interesting for me. :-) Thanks for the review - love the perspective. I learned from it.
Why not have the wife get a KX3 and hubby a KX2? In fact, why don't they get a *K2* kit and build it together? That way they could become _real_ hams, not just appliance operators!
Well, I'm going to buy either a KX2 or the IC-705. I have my wife's approval (yeah!), but need to wait for our Tax return or Biden's gift, which ever comes first. :)
You know? I've often thought about such an arrangement at one of the forest towers--put the apex at the top and turn it into a 160M inverted vee. Then again, the tower metal would probably mess up the dynamics a bit. Of course--not a totally "field portable" antenna concept. :) Ha ha!
I guess I'm ignorant enough that I don't know any better, but I would disagree. I have been QRP only until just recently when I bought a KXPA100 to complement my KX2. QRP CAN be a challenge, especially with poor band conditions, but to say that a new ham needs more power might not always be the case. I should qualify my remarks in that I'm a CW op. I have no experience with QRP SSB ops.
We might have to agree to disagree on that. :) I find the Elecraft front ends to be some of the most robust in the business. Their audio doesn't compare with larger radios, but then again their current drain is wee for battery operation.

Got them both. The KX3 many years ago after my K3, probably in 2014. Use it at my girlfriend's house, who is now a ham, with the 100 watt amp and PX3. Also use it in the car with the amp in the trunk for mobile ops. You can contest with that combination! Bought a used KX2 recently, and I didn't understand the need for it at first, but got a good price. It's amazing. It doesn't have the "big radio" feel of the KX3, but it does so much so well in such a small package. Having both is a luxury, but like you, I wouldn't get rid of either. 73 de VE3YT
They're both benchmark radios for the portable Op. You're right, too. Each time I reach for the KX3, it feels so "big" compared with the KX2. Never let go of those two transceivers! Cheers de K4SWL
Hi, Tom. Another great video. I have owned the kx3 but when the kx2 came out I sold the kx3 and bought the elecraft 100 watt amp and use the kx2 in the field and at home as my 100 watt base station. Also, page 10 of the kx2 manual shows using the bnc post binder with 25 feet of wire on both posts for 40-10 use. 73 Alan KZ6B

I have the KX2 for its portability. It flys easier than the KX3 and I take it everywhere. Yes its also my favorite radio too.
Great overview. I agree, buy both. These are the best QRP rigs on the market IMHO. Everytime I use a smaller packable model I miss the bands and modes they offer for a few more ounces. I love my MTR3B for sure but it is a compromise. The IC 705 is a serious challenge but the missed the boat with no tuner. Since I'm not a digital user, it's and expensive compromise.

I'm a dual owner also... bought the KX3 and had to have the KX2... I'm primarily a SOTA activator and i love the "simplicity" of the KX2 ;it's now my go-to radio. My Kx2 is configured with Tuner option only... without the ability to charge the battery in the radio.. that seemed like it would become a chore and I pretty much always run external LiFeP04 battery packs anyway... I don't think you mentioned the Audio quality difference between the two the Radios..... the Kx2 is the Winner in that regard..
Yes, a good point. The KX2 audio is much better than that of the KX3. In fact, I'm trying to eliminate harmonic vibrations in my KX3 at the moment--it's bad enough sometimes the encoder will move a bit. :)
Ordered my KX3 in December 2011, got it August 2012 started SOTA October 2012. Done 457 SOTA activations its now March 2024. Only mod I've done is make a new power lead for it as the original lead went a bit brittle and not so flexible anymore. Been a great rig and hope it keeps going longer so I can get to MG x 2. But no antenna tuner, no integrated microphone.
Kx2 all in one and tiny.

First of all great video. I had the KX2 first and sold it, now I own the KX3. I feel the KX3 has a quieter noise floor, much better to listen to. I use my KX3 and an amp for all my field days. LOL I leave my 100W radios at home.
The KX3 definitely has great specs. But for my purposes (SOTA and mountain operating) I opted for the KX2 due to the size and weight reduction.
Would like to see a video of your shack and what base antennas you use.

The kickstands are built into a stock KX3. The side panels are really only panels.

I've owned the KX3 for several years now and it's an impressive rig.....however, I was at Pacificon in October and Elecraft was there, but no hint of an updated version of the KX3 with touch screen and band scope. For field work, IMO, my KX3 is way overkill for a simple park or peak activation. I owned at one time the Youkits HB1B qrp transceiver which was the "perfect" SOTA/POTA radio. My only complaint was it didn't have a built in auto tuner which, after 50+ years of hamming, I refuse to live without...HI HI

You should find a good used KX1. That radio was made for SOTA, is super simple, and incredibly compact! And even has a built-in ATU! :)

If you were limiting yourself to SSB then which would you prefer? Do the extra filers in the KX3 do anything for SSB? 6m would be nice as well as 2m but they are not a necessity for me. And I'm not sure if I will ever have time to learn CW.
So if the 6M and the 2M option aren't a big deal, I would go with the KX2. Either radio would be brilliant and, I'm sure, the KX3 performance would be a tad better than the KX2, but not enough to really notice. I own both but tend to use the KX2 much more because it's such a great field radio.
I just picked up a used KX3 and I absolutely love it. But now a KX2 opportunity has popped up. I have the cash set aside, so I need to make up my mind. I do not have any SOTA opportunities in my area, so my primary usage will be CW POTA. Frankly, though, I think I prefer the KX3 to my IC-7300, primarily because of the filters and the pin diode t/r switching. Thomas - Regarding filters, do you miss the roofing filter in the KX2?
I do not miss the roofing filters in my KX2. I would, I'm sure, if I were using the KX2 in, say, a CW contest with really dense RF. If the KX2 is a good deal, I'd pounce on it! I have both the KX3 and KX2 and love both. Keep in mind: you easily could sell the KX2 later and likely get what you put into it. :) Elecraft rigs really hold their value.

I pulled the trigger yesterday on the KX3 Pack (includes ATU fac installed) w/roofing filter installed as an option, and I added the ax1 antenna with the 40m add on. I also ordered a photog back pack from B&H photo. Lowepro 450. So thx for the vids. Also, for those deciding which radio to get. Elecraft has a note on their website that there’s going to be a price increase in March. Didn’t say what was gonna change but I assume the kx line has to be on that list.

Yes, identical.
Both perform well. I use my KX3 strictly in the primary station. I use my KX2 strictly for portable. There's no way I planned on using 160 meters portable so why use the KX3 when portable. The KX2, by far, has a better internal battery. The batteries in the KX3 is almost useless. It's good for keeping the clock running. Make a few short Q's with the internal battery and you're done. No matter what internal batteries you use, they just don't last.
If I had to choose one radio, I'd choose the KX2 only because of the limited choice for internal batteries. If you could use a LiPo internal battery in the KX3, then the KX3 would be my single radio choice. I hope if they come out with a KX4 with a built in pan adapter display and a GOOD LiPo battery, I'd sell both of my radios and get the KX4. "Are you listening Elecraft?" Barry, KU3X/QRP

Correct. There are no additional filters to add to it, in fact.

Yes you can! Check out the owner's manual--it describes how to initiate it and where the numbers are silk screened on the front face. Works brilliantly!

If you look at the testing done by Rob Sherwood (sherweng.com) you will see that the KX3 rates way up near the top, ahead of many "home" rigs.
Could you use the KX2 battery pack in the KX3 radio?
I pair mine with the KX3 all the time. It doesn't fit *inside* the KX3, however. At least, you'd have to modify it and I suspect if it could be done, it already would have been documented on the internet.

It's commonly called a "BNC Binding Post Adapter." It has Binding Posts on one end and a male BNC on the other.

In my opinion, the KX2 does. The KX2 speaker is pretty darn good for such a small radio. It's down-facing, but has quite a bit of volume.
Kx3 for the win.
I got the FT-891 a lot cheaper, got the 891 + Super Antenna and still had change over the Kx2 at least here in Europe. Can't beat having 100 watts when you need it either. I use either an 8.4 Ah LiFeP04 RC type battery or 45 Ah car battery depending how long I intend operating, the 8.4 Ah can keep me going for hrs at 100w SSB.
Sure, I'm not going to be back packing with that setup.

Ha ha! I rarely toss anything. When I have gear and accessories that are beyond my needs, I often give things away to people who can use them.
It's between this or an Icom 7100 but I have to be able to TX on 11m with at least a couple watts for when I'm in a car club tour or visiting a new town looking for a good restaurant recommendation, and a Mazda Miata doesn't have room for a 2nd radio & antenna for as rarely & seldom as I'll be using it on the CB band.
- As an Advanced class Op I should be able to utilize any radio I want so long as it's not off frequency, over-powered for the band restrictions, and am not producing spurious harmonics.
I've heard that Elecraft won't provide any 11m conversion info, which is silly for a licensed Amateur, since I can legally *_build_* my own radio if I choose - so long as the aforementioned parameters are met.
It looks like it's going to have to be the IC-7100, though the KX-3 was my preference.
You might check if there's a "MARS mod." Often, those are mods to transceivers that open them up to transmit pretty much anywhere. Some manufactures make it extremely easy to do. Others, not so much. I've no clue about Elecraft.

So both work well, but the KX2 actually has a built-in mic in the body so if you forget your mic, it's not a problem. Personally, I'd go for the KX2 even though the KX3 is also one of my favorite radios.

@@ThomasK4SWL Thank you, that's very helpful! As a newbie ham, I'm actually quite glad that this isn't an easy choice even for experienced people. Means I've got something right! :) I'm mostly interested in SOTA (activating and chasing) and will probably have to use the same portable setup even when chasing from home. Lightweight is obviously good from a carrying point of view, but I don't want to compromise too much on ability/performance and, as a beginner, ease of use is also particularly important. Having a UK Foundation licence means that I'm limited to 10W, so at least I don't need to worry about whether I'd like a higher wattage rig or not. :D
@@sararassner in that case, I would lean toward the KX2. You can practically carry it in your pocket to a summit. :) The KX3 is super portable, too, but there's no good internal battery option for it. The KX2 makes for a fine home transceiver, too.

You said everything, nothing much to add. Maybe regarding the "almost the same" physical factor I would disagree slightly. To the weight and volume of KX3 you have to add power supply, regardless of what you used to take, as 8xNiMh AA cells in KX3 are worth less that they weight. Also you have to take microphone even if SSB is your secondary mode, but you don't want to cut this possibility. KX2 for CW and contingency SSB is completely self containing. Because of that I would be more keen to say that KX2 is less or equal to half of KX3 in terms of weight and volume.
I have KX3 and for me this radio is somewhere between portable QRP rig and mobile rig but with limited power. It's too big for a backpack and to compact/low power for mobile or home use. When going mobile you can add PA to KX3 easily but this will give you 2k$ set, which is 3.5 times more than eg TS-480SAT... is it worth? I'm not sure.
Good points. The KX3--at time of introduction--was one of the more compact full-featured general coverage transceivers. The KX2 took that concept even further.
The Elecraft looks/feels like 1998 and they option you half to death. The end result seems ok but NiMh batteries? Fixed pattern mono LCD display? External panadapter? They need an industrial designer (like me!) to ditch the 1990's.
I like its radio features, size, etc.....but everything else has me continuing to look around for QRP solutions.
I don't know. The KX2 is one of my favorite field radios because of its simple design, but deep feature set for my application. The display is easy to read, everything is one button or knob away, and it just gets the job done. The batteries are not NiMh, they're Lithium Ion and last longer than any other internal internal battery I've ever tested: a full 10 watts output for about 1.5 hours, then 5 watts for three hours--all of heavy use. The capability of the units are rather impressive - I mainly desire integrated pan-adapter functionality. Although that is an additional load on the battery so perhaps a compromise for many users.
Maybe the IC-705 and KX3 could get together and have a baby. Both are almost interesting for me. :-)

You know? I've often thought about such an arrangement at one of the forest towers--put the apex at the top and turn it into a 160M inverted vee. Then again, the tower metal would probably mess up the dynamics a bit. Of course--not a totally "field portable" antenna concept. :) Ha ha!

I guess I'm ignorant enough that I don't know any better, but I would disagree. I have been QRP only until just recently when I bought a KXPA100 to complement my KX2. QRP CAN be a challenge, especially with poor band conditions, but to say that a new ham needs more power might not always be the case. I should qualify my remarks in that I'm a CW op. I have no experience with QRP SSB ops.
You get a 100 watt radio and turn the power down...2 separate radios....really....

We might have to agree to disagree on that. :) I find the Elecraft front ends to be some of the most robust in the business. Their audio doesn't compare with larger radios, but then again their current drain is wee for battery operation.
