@@mcalos2814 Yes a good point and Callas had a special connection with her audience.I was fortunate enough to hear Renata Tebaldi sing Tosca at Covent Garden 1955 and Callas sing Tosca there in 1964.I think Tebaldi possessed one of the most beautiful lirico-spinto soprano voices of the last century, Callas sang with such passion and emotion, she became Tosca and whilst Tebaldi produced more beautiful notes, the performance by Callas is something I shall remember for the rest of my life.A different genre of music, but Judy Garland had the same ability as Callas to connect with an audience, sang with passion and emotion and acted her songs.I saw her in top form London Palladium 1960, like Callas, something I shall remember for the rest of my life. Also saw Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan live, both had beautiful voices, superior to Garland, but never received the mass adulation Garland had.Have a good day.Comments just my personal opinion.

This is one of the first operatic recordings that I ever bought, and on listening to it now I'm struck by how subtle, conversational and understated the performance is, especially from Callas and Gobbi. It feels more like the reading of a play, and the lack of verismo excess in the musical style renders it even more gripping and believable. One of the great monuments of recorded sound.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how Angelo Mercuriali's Spoletta is also the very best you'll find out there? I'm mean, I HATE when the tenor just _sing_ very calmly Spoletta's final part, but he just SHOUTS out Tosca's fate. It is the only one who I believe would make me jump. This is why this recording is so amazing, Tosca is not the best opera ever, but they really paid attention to every single detail. Bravi tutti.
The moment Callas vocally enters, there is a thrilling fusion of such emotional truth and great vocal execution, combined with exquisite musicianship. Wow* She lives in this recording! Shines! All the colors, and delicate emotive pianissimos, explosive fortes, and such a focus delicate vocal line. A completely open tbroat, no false darkening from the tongue like Sopranos today. DiStefano, and Gobbi are truly inspired in their acting. i wish i had been in the theater... Genius.
And when I hear Callas sing....the sounds emanating from her bring tears to my eyes...never saw her in person but grew up hearing opera every Saturday on live from the Met while sitting in my grandfathers shoe repair shop in Brooklyn...Tosca is one of my favorite operas....as bright as any a star in the sky

I chose to listen to this as my formal introduction to Italian opera today. Astounded in every aspect. I've listened to so many great music and gained some wonderful experiences, and this will be remembered as one of my greatest experiences. Thank you CMRR
MOST BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE'S BY SOME OF THE GREATEST OPERA SINGERS EVER CALLAS, DiSEFANO, GOBBI "TOSCA" A DREAM. YOU DONT NEED TO BE AN EXPERT IN OPERA TO HEAR GREATNESS........... BY PERFORMANCE THAT was GOD-GIVEN, WITH THE ADDED GIFT TO HEAR AND ENJOY. WOW, WOW AND ANOTHER WOW.
A great recording in every sense. The cast outstanding and awesome. Direction magnificent. What an amazing aesthetic experience !!! Thanks for sharing!!! Callas, Di Stefano and Gobbi in their best!!!
Callas has ruined all future Tosca performances for me. In each I strive to find the same power of expression and passion of delivery - and find none! She will live forever in our memory and in this recording.
This is the first opera recording i ever bought purely based on the fact it was the cheapest in price so i thought i would give Opera a try, what a stroke of luck. I have bought many other recordings since of Tosca and other opera's but nothing compares to this. Recommend this to anyone trying Opera for first time. Feel sorry for today's singer's and conductors if they record this Opera absolutely no chance of them surpassing Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi and De Sabata. I suppose I spoiled it for myself hearing the greatest first but I wouldn't change things for the world it's a honour to listen to this much talent on one recording.
When I first heard this version, I didn't know it was so highly regarded. It just took my breath away, Gobbi is perfect, Callas convincing as always, Di Stefano makes Cavaradossi relevant in a piece where Tosca and Scarpia carry the show and the conductor, just brilliant. It impressed me so much, I learned by heart everybody's lines and music.
It takes a strong personality to portray heroic evil. Most singers have only strong voices! In drama, a comparable achievement to Tito Gobbi's charismatic Scarpia would be Laurence Olivier's Richard lll, also a sexual predator.
If you ever want to test whether your hi-fi speakers powerful music, try playing the end of act one at a decent volume. I'm not someone who makes a habit of annoying my neighbours with loud music, but that ending affects every fibre of my being and I have to turn it up - pure emotion!
No one else sings "Vittoria, vittoria, ...." like Giuseppe Di Stefano, starting at 1:02:00. And when Callas joins him a bit later... ah. All with a perfect orchestra, orchestration, and conductor!
Hmmm...the Solti Ring might have a thing or two to say about that, not to mention the Kleiber Traviata, the first Karajan Rosenkavalier, the Beecham Boheme, the Kempe Lohengrin, the Giulini Don Carlo, the Furtwängler Tristan, the Solti Elektra, the Muti Aïda, the Kubelik Meistersinger, the Toscanini Falstaff, the Abbado Simon Boccanegra...
Widely acclaimed by whom? The Callas Queens? Personally, I love this recording, but let's please leave these ridiculously pompous statements for drunken moments in gay bars.
This is quite a reasonable recording for UA-cam - well done. All the more so since Tidal do not have the EMI recordings, including this one. Thank you.
this is the first opera that i listen in my life, with the two L.P. set of columbia, and follow the history with the booklet included. I love all the casting of this version, no one is out of the opera. Gobbi and callas superlative voices and interpretaions.
QUESTA È LA PIU GRANDE INSUPERATA INCISIONE DELLA TOSCA!!! Quella della prima della SCALA DI MILANO DI POCHI GIORNI FA NON È NEANCHE L OMBRA DI QUESTA CON LA MAGISTRALE DIREZIONE DI DE SABATA!! ALTRO CHE CHAILLY....!!!!
Decided to listen to this version after chatting with a friend this afternoon. She received the record nearly 20 years ago when she was 12yrs old, and loved it! So did I tonight - wonderful way to pass evening during #Lockdown Happy #Easter2020
thank you for posting this brilliant recording it is the best there is for Tosca heard it many times over the years and now have it thanks to you. I figured it would have been done at the La Scala could not happen at a more poignant establishment. This is truly beautiful next time and many times after listen uninterrupted the first time had to pause it to get a cookie and switch the fan off other that uninterrupted listening pleasure. Really thank you again.
Thank you very much for sharing this historic recording. It stands with the Milanov-Bjoerling-Warren-Barbieri Aida and Trovatore, and the Toscanini Otellio and Falstaff as among the very greatest recordings of Italian opera. DiStefano in fabulous voice, and of course what can one say of Callas and Gobbi, except that they were supreme artists at their peaks. Oh to have been born earlier to hear them live, on stage....
... I'm sorry, Opera is an art I feel it and live it closely, deep in my chest and guts. Bravi! Callas, unsurpassable! Gobbi, grande, in one of the roles he succeeded. Di Stefano é sempre magnifico, uno dei miei favoriti tenori, even when I can't stand the characters like this one. De Sabata and the orchestra: the glorious days of La Scala. If you can't feel an Opera, then it is a failure. If it pushes your spirits to the top while being delivered, like this, then it is a success (even considering this is not at all the best of Puccini's greatest works).
I just listened to the entire opera last night, did not recognize it until I got to #28 of Act 3. Took my breath away the moment #29 started. Maria Callas is one powerful singer!
Most chilling moment for me is Scarpia's "Te Deum" concluding Act 1....and that organ...a villain plotting behind a religious glorification...if it's done with the proper visual spectacles, the effect can be overpowering...👰😈.
It’s odd to post a dislike to a genre you dislike vs a performance with this or that cast, orchestra or conductor. For me this recording is the gold standard for opera recording. I feel blessed to be able to listen at this most memorable evenings at La Scala. Blessed....
@@JoePalau Hands down, the best Tosca I ever heard. Also, I read somewhere that Karajan listened to Tosca entrance in third act and said that that's the way to conduct that part and he was not able to do it like that, no matter how much he tried.
When people say this is the recording of the century, are they talking about the technical recording on an audiophile point of view, or the performance of the artists and orchestra?
@arthurroosterwing9871: Oh no, if you must know everyone is referencing the cover art of the recording on the Angel when it appeared in America using an image of s painting from the Detroit Institute of Arts titled “A View of the Tiber.” Who buys opera recordings for the recording or technical achievements. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COVER ART!!!
@giuseppecuscani4409: DiStefano when he was satisfied to remain a lyric tenor before blowing out his voice on dramatic roles. By 1965 when he was 43, he was finished. More dead than Cavaradossi after being executed.

Genius.
Terrific and evocative description- thank you!

I love her! Everytime I sing Tosca it’s impossible for me not to be inspired by the great Maria. There's always a bit of her in every note I play
whoa
Di Stefano/Callas is one of the best duets ever.
I chose to listen to this as my formal introduction to Italian opera today. Astounded in every aspect. I've listened to so many great music and gained some wonderful experiences, and this will be remembered as one of my greatest experiences. Thank you CMRR
Welcome to the world of opera!
L'incisione più importante e straordinaria del 900. Victor... mi fai volare cielo! Viva De Sabata!
Oh my god! That ending completely floored me, messed up my breathing and everything. Wow.

The best performance of the most enduring opera ever written
So beautiful. No one sings e non guingono... bada, better than Maria.
Feel sorry for today's singer's and conductors
if they record this Opera absolutely no chance of them surpassing Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi and De Sabata.
You were very lucky, Brian. This is the best version that I've ever heard of Tosca. At her very best moment.
This a great opera recording, soloists and conductor to match. If Gobbi isn't the most evil lech in this opera I can't think of anyone else right now.
It takes a strong personality to portray heroic evil. Most singers have only strong voices! In drama, a comparable achievement to Tito Gobbi's charismatic Scarpia would be Laurence Olivier's Richard lll, also a sexual predator.
The best recording of this opera. Period.
I grew up on this. Listened to it almost daily when I was a kid. I imprinted on this recording so hard I end up disappointed by almost any other cast.
Tito Gobbi was one of opera's greatest baritones, and his performances of Scarpa's arias in Act 2 are magnificent.

What a cast! A classic for all time.
What got me hooked was Callas' last line before the Te Deum ("Dio mi perdona... Egli vede ch'io piango!"). It always gives me goosebumps.

Ray bradbury was right, i cant help but find myself in tears to this overwhelming beauty
Callas makes me proud to be Greek! Love her so much!!!
Maria: The Demon Barber of UA-cam Puccini makes me proud to be human.

Best Tosca! Thank you heartily for sharing this amazing, outstanding version.
If you ever want to test whether your hi-fi speakers powerful music, try playing the end of act one at a decent volume. I'm not someone who makes a habit of annoying my neighbours with loud music, but that ending affects every fibre of my being and I have to turn it up - pure emotion!
'can' handle powerful music.
No one else sings "Vittoria, vittoria, ...." like Giuseppe Di Stefano, starting at 1:02:00. And when Callas joins him a bit later... ah. All with a perfect orchestra, orchestration, and conductor!
To my mind and in my most humble opinion, this is the very best Tosca ever performed........
Widely acclaimed as the greatest operatic recording ever made.
It's right up there...
Critics have praised this recording as a great one for decades.

Thank God, I did.
