As much as audi has risen, it still suffers consumer perception of being the budget BMW. Mazda is constantly getting knocked when it deserves way better. It was the coolest little positive cult following that the brand had! That is totally gone now with almost every VW model being cheapened for the "American " market. Now they are just another cookie cutter company selling hundreds of thousands to car rental companies like Nissan making their cars cheaper in all aspects and destroying the "special " factor of owning one VW was soooo known for for decades. Sad..
@SPECTRE Unfortunately....they are not. I've yet to find a German brand that over the long haul are reliable durable and dependable. Now if you please on you will be fine because you dont own it. Regular maintenance is all you are responsible for. Any breakdowns is the responsibility of the dealer/ manufacturer!
Audi has always been one of those brands that made it out of normal and into premeum. It's considered as one of the top 3 German cars because of that innovation and perseverance. They said themselves that it was one of the most improved cars of the decade so it is what it is. I commend Audi, they're actually doing pretty okay.
@@mujjuman The term "millennials" was created for children who were born around 1982, The high school graduation class of 2000. So usually its for people born from 1981 all the way to 1995. So people born from 81 to 85 are the kings of the Millenials. I graduated 2002, I drive an Audi S5.
I believe Audi is and has been the industry leader when it comes to interiors. Extremely high quality materials, fit and finish, and design and execution have be the hallmarks of the brand for at least 3 decades. I just think they are top of the food chain in that area. Always have been. Where they struggle is electrical engineering quality. Like almost all German brands they continue to have long term glitches and issues with their electrical componentry and their mechanical engineering as well. My 2001 vw Jetta 1.8t was an absolute blast but was PLAGUED with issues ranging from electrical engine problems to ignition coils misfiring and this was multiple times over a 7 year period. Audi makes some of the most beautiful cars on the road and are my favorite company from an aesthetics perspective. But I simply can't invest my money in the brand until they can get extremely consistent with their engineering. Hint: Consult Lexus engineers about EVERYTHING EXCEPT DESIGN AND INTERIORS. Lexus isn't bad at all but to me audi is a cut above!
Well put! I own currently 2 Audi A4s/ One 03, and the other 2016. Love them both dearly. Prior to these I owned Several Vdubs. Yes they have their issues here and there, but with all seriousness. I found when you handled the maintenance when needed, and shopped around for parts, it really isn't all that bad. And the Feel, the drive, the fit and finish and the all over experience you get when you sit in, and move in these cars, cannot be beat. Yes Lexus has Reliable Toyota chassis/Power-trains in them, but they don't remotely prevoke that finesse you get when in Audi. I also personally dont find Toyota and Lexus (and many other brands really) Attractive looking anymore. They went from boring to hard lines design....
2001 was a LONG time ago. I know... The cars are more reliable now. But they are still german cars - so parts are more expensive than japanese or american cars.
@@Amidat you are correct about being a long time ago. My problem now with the brand is that reliability has only gone up marginally and now they have downgraded all of the interiors to suit American buyers as opposed to what they used to do which was build german quality interiors in regards to fit and finish. Always loved Audi! I grew up on long dirt roads in the 80's/90's and a neighbor had an Audi Quattro with the big logo on the door. That car would fly down the roads and catch air going over the tops of the steep hills. That crackling sound was unbelievable and still gives me chills. I was hooked.
The American car market is so strange. Audi is a massive brand in Europe. The same can be said with Ford oddly. Ford Europe is far more successful than the US nowadays. It’s not surprising. Ford Europe make excellent value for money cars whereas the Ford US models are not very nice cars.

VW and Audi have the most amount of cars on the road in Europe with over 100,000 miles, they don't reach those figures by being unreliable or badly made. In the UK, Honda sits at just 2% of market share. Ive had Audis with nearly 200,000 miles on the clock, and its still driving around today. Keep up with regular serving, and the Audi will provide you with years of trouble-free motoring.
Bought my first Audi in 2018, though I wanted one earlier. Some said I was crazy. But I have loved it. I’m now in my 2nd Audi, and I am a customer for life. Your video explains some reasons why - I grew up in the 80s, and have always wanted to be a bit different. Thanks for making this.
I’m a millennial and I love the simplicity of the 1990s and 2000s interiors. My 04 convertible is what a true Audi supposed to look like. It’s not a concern to me of luxury or not. You can’t beat an Audi in the winter.
I wouldn't use the term innovate but they manage make niche cars MB/BMW didn't make and it made the brand very popular. The S8 was the first sport luxury sedan and before the RS4/RS6 Avant sporty wagons were barely a thing. Winning the 24h of Le Mans several times probably helped a lot.
You can only sustain niche for so long though. Audi knows this and that’s why they’re panicking because Tesla is now the niche, young, tech brand. BMW and Mercedes Benz have nothing to worry about-they’re top tier gasoline machines until the foreseeable future. The transition into electric-only will be very interesting thing to watch. If the Japanese automakers slice it just right; I bet they could be the ones to rival Tesla with electric cars.
@@Johnnygga But most of what Audi sells isn't niche. Niche cars are only Halo cars. Maybe it's different in the US because you guys don't get a lot of the cool stuff so that strategy doesn't work as well as in other markets
@@blackshadow7192 With Audi, I would definitely use the word innovate. Look up how advanced the headlights are on the Audi e-Tron Sportback; they project animations onto the ground or a wall when you turn it on, have extremely advanced high beam assist, and lay a carpet of light onto the road ahead to help you stay in the lane (Only activated in Europe currently).
60 minutes actually modified a car to get it to do what they wanted for their story because they couldn’t get it to do it stock. They ended up loosing a lawsuit over it.
Yep. The issue arose because Audi moved the driver seat slightly more inboard due to stricter side impact crash test ratings. That small amount was enough to throw some people off to where they were mistakenly hitting the gas instead of the brake.
Incredible how marketing strategies lead the image of a brand and even characteristics of a product, which actually should come from the product itself. Audi has accomplished a remarkable polished and stand-alone image by now (especially in terms of quality and reliability). In germany Audi definitely isn't that "youth" car (rather an established competitor to BMW & Mercedes). It's image in the US may shift a lot.
Me and my wife bought a used 2009 Audi Q5. Some of the features that sold us was; great crash test ratings, arguably the best AWD system in the business, 2 Ton towing capacity, decent gas mileage and serviceability by myself. The 3.2L engine has been bulletproof to us (unfortunately I can't say that about the 2.0L Turbo) They built this car with the same parts all the way to 2017, making new and used parts supply abundant, which is important considering I do all the maintenance myself. 270hp and surprisingly spunky. While it does have its unique issues, we absolutely love this car and encourage anyone in the market to consider getting one.
Love my Q5. I compared to X5 BMW, felt it slightly too big and lacked style and luxury of Audi. MB lacked performance and sporty ride of Audi. So far, 10 years later, I still love my Q5 and has been near perfect for me.

The 2.0T is widely the most commonly used engine in Audis throughout North America and that engine, through several iterations, has had some pretty major reliability problems. I personally know several people who have catastrophic failures with the 2.0T. The 3.0T (supercharged) on the other hand has been exceptional. Of course every engine has some potential issues that need to be taken care of but overall Audi has been better than the other Germans, even though often perceived the other way around.

Audi at least builds attractive vehicles, unlike Teslas which, aside from the S, look like blobs on wheels. And Audi interiors vastly surpass those of post S Teslas (of course, that's true of most cars, except for an old Saturn Ion or some Toyotas).
Their marketing is great too. I distinctly remember their Superbowl commercials in 2013 (kid goes to prom) and 2016 (retired astronaut with Bowie in the background).
Great point. Since the 80's I remember VW had commercials that resonated with me unlike any other brand, Apple were good but less so since the competitors just followed suit. I rewatched 2013,2016 (Commander) and 2017 (Daughter). All great, last two brought tears.
I personally love Audi. I love the design, I love the interiors and I love how high quality it feels. I am not sure how reliability is on a brand new Audi a6 for example, but my 2010 Audi A6 Le Mans has been nothing but exceptional!
Owned all 3 brands BUT owning a Lexus has showed me they truly are the most reliable luxury car brand in the universe. The peace of mind, built quality everything about it. German automakers couldn’t come close.
Mike D. What motor? Sure! I drive the previous model A4 with 1.8T and 163Hp. Great handling and dead quiet. But you should stay away from the 2006-2013 TFSI engines! The pistons have a faulty design and because of that, the oil rings get clogged.

I will forever love my Audi Q5. I test drove the X3, Q5 and GLC and the Q5 blew me away with its interior quality, ride quality, design, driving feel and stereo are both better than the competition in my opinion. I love it, the other cars were by no means even approaching bad but they didn't click with me like the Q5 did. I love it.

Toyota is reliable only because it doesn't innovate. Innovation comes with bold risks. Toyota took 30 years to get to turbocharging. It gives the impression of reliability. Germans always had better comfort, materials, fit, finish and performance. Toyotas are solid, cheap, low performance, low fit/finish & cheap materials. Yeah, good as an appliance. For fun, it's either German cars or latest Camaro, Corvette, Mustangs.
I am in UK and had Audis for years in some cases from new. I bought a nearly new 3 series touring two years ago and havent looked back. The BMW diesels are 'head and shoulders' better. The BMW is overall less fragile I think. The only thing I miss is the nicer Audi interior and slightly better ergonomics ---- dont miss the Audi dealers and Audi service costs !
I drove an Audi for 11 years. It was a little underpowered, but it was absolutely the most fun car to drive (outside of the 1970s Mini I once owned). It always felt stable and I drove to work after a 3ft snowstorm with no issues. The only problem was after the warranty ran out… it cost over $200 to change a headlight bulb! That needed a special tool that only their techs had. The bulb was $22; the rest was labor. Yikes! I traded it in and didn’t fix the hole in the exhaust because it would probably have cost more than the car was valued. I’d definitely buy an Audi again.
The Audi rally racing was huge and they are still reaping the benefits of it. Look at a group B rally Audi in a four wheel drift, nothing like it. And Michelle Mouton at the controls!
I have driven Audi for the last 7 years and will never drive another brands cars. Quattro has been able to take me we’re no other vehicles were able to get in.
roof pizza Absolutely. A good friend of mine owns a German auto repair shop and ONLY works on Audi’s, BMW’s, Mercedes, etc for a reason. He can charge a lot, and they’re always breaking down. Not sure what the hell all this “reliability” talk is coming from.
Because in Germany, the whole VW Group is offering a really good warranty when buying new or nearly new cars. I bought my A1 1 year ago when it had like 50.000km its still having its warranty until I give it back to Audi or buy it in 2 years. You usually have to renew wear parts after 80.000-100.000km.

Leased cars are still counted as sold cars. At least from a manufacturer's point of view. You are leasing from a leasing company not directly from the car maker.
Digi tal not exactly. VWFS for example. Regardless, they will make just as much from leasing. You lease an A3 and pay £8000 over 2 years to them. Then they sell it for £13,000 at an auction. The way that Audi used to become one of the giants of the car market is that Audi did not try to be like others. Audi tried to develop the areas in which two giants Mercedes and BMW lacked attention. Jody Owen that’s blatantly false and purely marketing. German cars have great engineering dont get me wrong, but it’s usually engineered to give a very solid feel initially, and after 3-5 years starts to break (speaking from family members experience). Japanese engineering is about engineering to last longer, hence the use of iron blocks, not using dry sumped turbos, lower psi, and larger layout for gearboxes. This gives more tolerance for use allowing the engines and gearboxes that endure large forces in their lifetime. If you lease then german cars are great since the first 3 years are trouble free, but if you buy, go with lexus and you wont be wasting time in a repair shop.

As much as audi has risen, it still suffers consumer perception of being the budget BMW. Mazda is constantly getting knocked when it deserves way better. Buying a mazda shouldn't be what you settle for cause of the price. @SPECTRE if you take care of them, yes
Yes!!! I bought a brand new 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T 5 speed manual in silver arrow and loved it as a drivers car! Sooo much fun. Every single time I passed another VW for 7years they ALWAYS waved at me!
The new TTRS kicks ass.
Audi has always been one of those brands that made it out of normal and into premeum. It's considered as one of the top 3 German cars because of that innovation and perseverance. They said themselves that it was one of the most improved cars of the decade so it is what it is. I commend Audi, they're actually doing pretty okay.

George L they don’t look ugly as other brands do over time, they hold their looks extremely well for a very long time
2001 was a LONG time ago.
Just don't find that appealing even though the gti will ALWAYS remain a desirable sweetheart in the industry and the jetta gli is pretty cool. But look at the Passat now...only one engine and it's a base engine. Boring. How can they compete at all. Maybe they will invest more aesthetically and performance wise in the new one if a new one even gets built.
@@gabevillarreal96 oh ok.... well Passat's only share a platform now with the A3. Audi's are much more differentiated from VW's now. That said - all car companies have to spend a lot of money on "clean energy vehicles"... So more choices will be removed and less quality materials in many cases... That's the reality for all except the most expensive vehicles.
Over here, every second car is an Audi.
Greetings from Ingolstadt. :)

That was a brilliant car. Putting 4WD on a sedan was genius.
The American car market is so strange. Audi is a massive brand in Europe. The same can be said with Ford oddly. Ford Europe is far more successful than the US nowadays. It’s not surprising. Ford Europe make excellent value for money cars whereas the Ford US models are not very nice cars.
The US is about excess. All we want over here is SUVs even when we don't actually _need_ them. If I'm not mistaken, Ford is discontinuing all of its cars here in the US aside from the mustang in favor of crossovers and trucks.
Justin Simmons yeah that’s true. Meanwhile in Europe they make some fantastic little cars like the Fiesta and Focus

@Slatternly Skaghalter making comments like that means you are either a BMW fan boy or you have no clue about cars.
Dont listen to the "my civic is much better than your Audi". People will always defend only what they can afford.

Nah you can't beat no audi in winter
How Audi gave BMW a run for their money?
It's simple: They started innovating unlike BMW and made better (value for money) cars.
@@JackC11111 It's mostly a gimmick.
The days of crazy innovation like in the 90s and early 2000s are long gone.
Casts doubt that it was mechanical? Idiots were hitting the gas at the same time as the brake and were too stupid to even realize it, thats all.
Truth
60 minutes actually modified a car to get it to do what they wanted for their story because they couldn’t get it to do it stock. They ended up loosing a lawsuit over it.
Yep. The issue arose because Audi moved the driver seat slightly more inboard due to stricter side impact crash test ratings. That small amount was enough to throw some people off to where they were mistakenly hitting the gas instead of the brake.
+ Patrick: Ja. Ami´s kenne eigentlich nur Automatik. Manuell ist "to difficult".
Brian K I thought it was because of the pedal sizes or proximity to each other or something like that
Incredible how marketing strategies lead the image of a brand and even characteristics of a product, which actually should come from the product itself.

The reliability of Audi in recent years is phenomenal, at least for German cars.
I think this perception comes more from the fact that people are leasing their cars more and more rather than buying.
The 2.0T is widely the most commonly used engine in Audis throughout North America and that engine, through several iterations, has had some pretty major reliability problems. I personally know several people who have catastrophic failures with the 2.0T. The 3.0T (supercharged) on the other hand has been exceptional. Millennial here: I love my Audi S5 - the power and exterior/interior design are all top notch compared to the current 4-series
Audi did a pretty good job placing their products in movies such as Ironman from Marvel
Man. really wish i can afford rs3 i love that car the design performance and everything
And with the avant coming to the United States... they’re gonna own the wagon market🔥
My inside Scotty tells me that it is an Audi commercial with phony experts.
tendencytoexplore “endless money pit”
I have an inner The SKipper.
Haaaa!! Rev up yer engines!!!!! Totally! we know the truth
You got it man. That is all a sponsored movie by Audi.

We purchased an Audi Q7 suv, and love it. It has a sleek, well integrated electronic dash. Most cars in this price range look like they have an iPad stuck on top of the dash. My one complaint about the Q7 is that it is 18 inches off the ground, a huge step and ungraceful and possibly dangerous entry for shorter people.
We are investigating running boards designed for this model.
My brother in law had a Audi A4 R and man that car was a beast. The interior was incredible and that digital display behind the steering wheel was amazing. I wish he had kept it so i could had more chances of driving it.
I never knew the r8 was the first production car to get LED head lights, very cool! I remember when it came out in 2008 I thought they were damn good looking!
1:43 TBH, the Audi 5000 unintended acceleration stuff was practically BS. I could say much of the same about the Toyota acceleration recall years later.
Bmw 2020 are amazing
Honestly both are

I’ve recently started a switch from BMW to Audi and I gotta say, I love Audi! I love the RS models, The design of their cars are way nicer and only Getting better. Unlike BMW and Mercedes’s designs which are becoming monstrously different from what their heritage used to be. Plus the grill looks way better than BMW. Their cars have also gone up in reliability and their interiors are clean and modern. Overall I love Audi.
I will always have a audi in my driveway Great in rain snow or in a clear day the drivability is so good 😊
America is so self centered, Audi is massive in Europe.
Right
TreeFiddy that’s a nice joke)
@TreeFiddy You are funny did you add school shootings and divide by obesity to get that fake number.
Most of the BMWs, Mercedes and Audis are being sold in China anyway.
"The R8 was the first production vehicle to get LED Headlamps" stop summarising facts they mislead people. Thankfully the lady clarified "The R8 was Audi's first vehicle..."
fiddley west that was the first car to use FULL led lights. The first led car was like in 1993
Any Audi fans here, who want to see how cool Audi is
Audis are just overpriced VW's.
@@JackoBanon1 yet they are at least better quality
@@abayamangali just ignore him, bmw fanboys back at it again with the hating
Went from an ATS to an A4 and I love it. Actually the quattro saved my life... so tks AUDI:)
I have a 21 TT RS. worth every penny.
lets face it, Tony Stark made Audi rise. Driving the R8 had an instant Ironman song in your head.
Not here :)
Excellent job keeping Volkswagen out of this docuseries... with that said, I am kind of amazed that 'Diesel-gate' wasn't used once to explain drops in sales
Out of all the expensive unreliable sports cars, Audi's are my favorite.
The sports cars are the reliable ones. The 3.0T in the s4 and other cars is damn near bulletproof. I have never seen one blow or be replaced. The V10s and direct injected 4.2 V8s are very strong too. Now the 2.0T, that makes me a lot of money.
@@TheSMedema my obtainable dream daily driver is an RS3 with that 400hp 5 cyl turbo.
@@TheSMedema looking a the s4. Can it handle 25k miles a year without exploding
@@hesko125 Do all of your recommended services and it will last forever. Might have to fix a leaky water pump at some point but nothing to worry about.
@@TheSMedema how are s3 as far as reliability. I take it you work for audi
Wow as a kid we would say “I’m Audi 5000” meaning we’re leaving somewhere, like we’re saying goodbye. I never knew why until now.
There is a humours saying with audi brand '4 rings to rule them all'
I have an Audi TTS. Best car I’ve ever owned
Audi is also the best company to work for 😍
I love it!!!
Audi is giving us the RS6 in the US. I'm sure that car is gonna blow up
Audi has proven that innovation is the key to success in product marketing
They also proved that cheating on a big scale without feeling shameful can be a way to success, too. (Until they got caught)
@@JackoBanon1 That was VW parent company i have never heard that Audi explicitly cheating as well, and getting caught, but you may be right.
@@maa1649 Some emails by high Audi managers were found after the scandal that basically said something like: 'Without cheating we won't be able to sell our Diesel cars'.
More high ranked Audi managers knew about the scandal since 2010 but didn't say anything and kept it a secret.
The way that Audi used to become one of the giants of the car market is that Audi did not try to be like others. Audi tried to develop the areas in which two giants Mercedes and BMW lacked attention. That was the 4 wheel drive cars. The Quatro of Audi, even if not the best, is one of the best ones. For the latest models, the interior of Audi cars is noticed to have very good high-tech screens, seats. Like Audi, another car that succeded because of pointing one skill of car is Toyota. Toyota sells most cars in all over the world just because those cars are the most reliable ones.
Heres a great tip to avoid frustration, buy Japanese cars.
Every car has its pros and cons, nothing is perfect. Spend your hard earned money on what makes you happy.
Can't bring myself to do it, but it is good advice (for non enthusiasts). -Frustrated
I just say try everything, thats what I do every time my lease is up, different brand every time.
@Jody Owen Wow, Brilliantly said. And to your point, the only reason Ford trucks are still the choice over Toyo is because of tariffs (pre Trump). Tariffs in the long run is not a way to sustain a company. Guess where GM and Ford make their majority profits from?
Good editorial video. I like Audi cars and am happy to see more of them on the road. Maybe soon I’ll get myself an Audi S3. (:

Audi is one of the best cars out there! I have owned 6

For how many years and miles did own them because it seems like some Audi aren’t meant to last
Rey Perez - Yeah, it might have been 6 in the last year or something
@@reyperez3424 I'd rather take an Audi instead of the BMW we have at work ... the last longer for sure ^^
I still miss the 1996 A4 Quattro I reluctantly retired this year due to a steadily increasing rate of electrical failures and my loss of confidence that it would not strand me or my wife. I hope Audi doesn't overdo the electronic technology, given that so many of my problems have been electrical.
My elder son still has the 2002 A4 Quattro I bought him as a university graduation present. It was 5 years old at the time, and it has served him well, but now it is showing its age.
Audi's intensity of wins at Le Mans in the recent years helped it gain a much better image.
