Nice adventure! Good calcs. I would never have pushed my Baron that far since I did not have any of the nice avionics you have when I quit flying. It was all by timing, experience of previous flights, and the POH....never the fuel gauges! I think you're making a wise investment in the new gear. Fuel management is good for safety, the engines, and your pocketbook!

Endurance and range are two different things. A certain power setting and fuel flow will give you maximum range. 10 gph per side or 20 gph @ 136 gallons is 6+ hours range. However if you fly for Endurance then the minimum power setting for level flight adjusted for leaning will give you the most endurance or flying time. It's been awhile but I recall its near the best rate of climb speed. Of course keeping the engines running cool is more important. Fuel is cheap and new engines are expensive. Just my thoughts. There is the saying that says, headwind go faster and with tailwind go slower for saving fuel. The real test is how long can your SIC last without a pit stop and lunch along the way. Happy Flying

I installed the CIES system in my Cirrus SR22. Great system but as you noted accuracy is dependent on initial calibration and is mostly accurate on straight and level flight. Still subjected to variations due to sloshing around in turbulence.

Not only is Kim attractive but she comes off as very personable and down to earth. Both of your personalities seem to mesh well and you seem to bring the best out of each other. Well, from what we can see on video of course. Your videos have become some of my favorites. Both of you take care of yourselves and try to keep healthy during this time of uncertainty.
One thing we notice since our heater registers on the fuel flow and totalizer is while at wide open the heater can burn what the POH says, at low settings the fuel flow is greatly reduced. Our heater works very well and most of the time we are running it on the lowest setting with a very minimal impact on the remaining reserves. Just another thing you can test on a different flight. See how much it actually uses compared to what it says it will.
Looks like a fun landing for sure what were the winds it becomes a headache above 7 knots xwind in the ercoupe (owner refuses to put the rudder kit in it) all i get is a darn brake pedal lol

I don't know if you can control volume levels or not, but the ATC calls in the background drowned out a good part of your explanations in the first part of the video ... also, can you explain why the heater uses 2 gallons/hour to operate ....
Not sure exactly which model is installed on this Baron, but Barons have a “combustion heater” which literally burns fuel in a closed system to heat air in an exchange chamber... fuel+spark=fire=warm air to move through the cabin... at about 2 gal per hour total.
so a 5:06 flt + 30 for gas turned into 6:39 with no stop? and froze the whole way because couldn't run the heat? wow, you guys are troopers!. I dont have any pax in my life that would sign up for that. LOL... a good test to find out if the old fuel totalizer is 100% accurate also. would have been exciting if ASG's one runway was closed due to a disabled aircraft. particularly if it happened when you were on final. full go around and divert to alternate at bingo fuel in gusty winds. that's really sporty....... hope the upgrades go well.
So many variables in aviation with regards to fuel. Was interesting to see how it all played out! On the ground in the automotive world, high headwinds can play a part, especially when towing something as aerodynamic as a grand piano, but not to the extent it does in aviation. Winds are just about everything. Then you've got mixtures, RPM, and manifold pressure - these are fixed more or less in relation to speed in the automotive world. Interesting! 26°F and no heat can get chilly if you're not dressed for it, for sure. It's worse when you're just sitting there during a trip. My wife wouldn't have liked that much, and she's born and raised in MA, lol! She would've shivered worse than poor Kim there! Just like fall hunting. 😂 I remember as a teenager, I blew the heater core in my '85 Monte Carlo - was shooting white fog out of the vents with the heat on, LOL. To avoid getting poisoned (which I ended up doing to myself anyway), I kept the windows cracked with the heat on - was 6°F outside. That sucked. Then I had flu-like symptoms for 24 hours following that. Guess I should've just toughed it out with the heat off! Antifreeze vapor is no bueno to breathe in! 😁 Only way to learn that as a teen was to carry the cat by the tail.😜 Anyway, great vid, Kris & Kim! Still waiting for the right weather to start getting the paramotor out up here. Hopefully I'll be off the ground by Halloween, lol. 😉
Very entertaining video. However I believe you unnecessarily suffered the cold because the cabin heater doesn’t burn 2 gallons an hour like you said in the video. It only burns a fraction of a gallon per hour. so little in fact that it doesn’t factor into fuel planning. Per the POH.

Hi, I fly long legs in a BE-58 all the time. I changed out my IO-520s for Ram IO-550s with Gami injectors and fine wire plugs. I usually do about 10,500 to 12,500 with an oxygen bottle and run 2200 by 18 to 20 by 11.2 gallons per hour and 22.5 gph total and 180 KTAS. This is about the best you are going to do and still keep a reasonable airspeed in the stretch baron. We all know the totalizers are a garbage in garbage out instrument. My tanks are 200 total/194 useful by the book. I checked mine on the ground and during engine change out and actually all 100 a side was useful not 97 a side. Legally, of course it is 97. I wanted to know if it was less than 97. You have to make sure you are really topping the tanks and the wings are level. I fly a1066nm leg often and plan on 35 gallons on the ground. I never go under 30 gallons on the ground. I am always within 2 gallons for the entire flight. I had to adjust the shadin totalizer when I bought the plane. It is now within 1% which is crazy accurate running by tracking multiple tanks of fuel. Refueling can vary about 2 gallons for the baron because of not being exactly level. You pick up about 1 knot as you burn off each 100 lbs of fuel approximately. I found the heater uses about 1 gallon an hour on average. This is just a rough guess after 20 years using it. If you are down low in the baron and running out of fuel and ideas I've found minimum fuel flow is about 7.5 to 8 gallons a side light weight at 2000 rpm by 17 or 18 inches and about 130 KIAS. It should be noted that the manual says no takeoffs below 26 gallons (the yellow on the fuel guages) because of unporting the fuel in the tanks. I would use care if a go around was necessary. Absolute max range in the baron is probably 2100 rpm and flying slow which is not practical. I have found 17,500 feet, 2500rpm, 15 inches, 10.5 gph per side gave a 190KTAS at 140 KIAS at 5200 lbs gross weight. I have found fuel guages in general aviation aircraft to be inaccurate. I have found personally that fuel guages in airliners and military fighters are very good. I am very untrusting. I compare clock, totalizer and guages. I once had a totalizer reading higher than the guages, it was a dripping slow fuel line leak. I really like your videos and I think you are a really sharp pilot.

At my age, I'm can't drive more than 2-3 hours without having to stop.... FWIW, my first date with my wife was at Nightengale's on Fisherman's Wharf in Punta Gorda. Lived in Fort Myers for ten years and am very familiar with your neck of the woods.
I hope ANJ (NAA?) Avionics will setup your Avidyne TAS Skywatch Active Traffic with correlated traffic using your existing ADS-B in to allow for both. Just remember that even with a TAS active traffic system that you will not see traffic without a transponder. I work for a Part 145 Avionics repair station, and a correlated traffic picture is a beautiful thing to have when flying in the soup. Congrats on your new avionics... the JPI 930 is extremely nice as well. I am curious which AOA system you went with... Great Video!
Baron Pilot Ahhh, Okay... I have only heard of Northwest Arkansan Avionics, but found A&J in the AEA directory. The Alpha systems AOA looks like a good AOA system, but I can’t say that I have ever installed one myself. I am more fimilar with the Garmin GI-260 AOA... either way both of these products will be a nice upgrade for your Baron.

Of course, you know when you go back to get the airplane, the winds are going to be on the nose all the way home, too! Okay, JPI EDM-960, great choice. AOA indicator, excellent choice. Upgrading to ActiveSky (I think that's what it's called, I could go look, but I'm not going to), good choice. So, the next big thing, of course, is the PFD. Are you looking at that yet, and have you made a 'I'd like that in my cockpit' choice yet, even if it's not available yet. When is Kim going to get her ticket?

I used to do aerial photography work for the forestry department in a 172 ans longest I went was about 4.5 hours. It was a race to the toilet when we landed

I notice this with every aviation video I watch - the tires all look flat. Even the 200+ psi tires on a C-5 Super Galaxy looked this way as I stood next to it last year. That is one HEAVY bird right there!
I wanted to show how you can extend the range when needed in addition to having Minimal fuel. They do need to drain the fuel tanks to install the new Cies Fuel Senders.

The most important figure on a trip of max endurance is MPG. I think you said it was a bit over 7. Not bad.

Correct, fuel remaining is total. I did misspeak at one point and say per side after I made reference to my fuel burn per side. It was a long flight.

My tanks are 200 total/194 useful by the book. I checked mine on the ground and during engine change out and actually all 100 a side was useful not 97 a side. Legally, of course it is 97. I wanted to know if it was less than 97. You have to make sure you are really topping the tanks and the wings are level. I fly a1066nm leg often and plan on 35 gallons on the ground. I never go under 30 gallons on the ground. I am always within 2 gallons for the entire flight. I had to adjust the shadin totalizer when I bought the plane. It is now within 1% which is crazy accurate running by tracking multiple tanks of fuel. Refueling can vary about 2 gallons for the baron because of not being exactly level. You pick up about 1 knot as you burn off each 100 lbs of fuel approximately. I found the heater uses about 1 gallon an hour on average. This is just a rough guess after 20 years using it. If you are down low in the baron and running out of fuel and ideas I've found minimum fuel flow is about 7.5 to 8 gallons a side light weight at 2000 rpm by 17 or 18 inches and about 130 KIAS. It should be noted that the manual says no takeoffs below 26 gallons (the yellow on the fuel guages) because of unporting the fuel in the tanks. I would use care if a go around was necessary. Absolute max range in the baron is probably 2100 rpm and flying slow which is not practical. I have found 17,500 feet, 2500rpm, 15 inches, 10.5 gph per side gave a 190KTAS at 140 KIAS at 5200 lbs gross weight. I have found fuel guages in general aviation aircraft to be inaccurate. I have found personally that fuel guages in airliners and military fighters are very good. I am very untrusting. I compare clock, totalizer and guages. I once had a totalizer reading higher than the guages, it was a dripping slow fuel line leak. I really like your videos and I think you are a really sharp pilot.

I hope ANJ (NAA?) Avionics will setup your Avidyne TAS Skywatch Active Traffic with correlated traffic using your existing ADS-B in to allow for both. Just remember that even with a TAS active traffic system that you will not see traffic without a transponder. I work for a Part 145 Avionics repair station, and a correlated traffic picture is a beautiful thing to have when flying in the soup. Congrats on your new avionics... the JPI 930 is extremely nice as well. I am curious which AOA system you went with... Great Video!
A&J. I went with the Alpha Systems AOA. It will have a HUD on my dash as well as compensation for my flap settings.
Baron Pilot Ahhh, Okay... I have only heard of Northwest Arkansan Avionics, but found A&J in the AEA directory. The Alpha systems AOA looks like a good AOA system, but I can’t say that I have ever installed one myself. I am more fimilar with the Garmin GI-260 AOA... either way both of these products will be a nice upgrade for your Baron.

I'm just curious, at 2200 RPM, are you subject to the Continental Advisory Bulletin CSB09-11A limiting the RPM to greater than 2300 RPM?

Okay, JPI EDM-960, great choice. AOA indicator, excellent choice. Upgrading to ActiveSky (I think that's what it's called, I could go look, but I'm not going to), good choice. So, the next big thing, of course, is the PFD. Are you looking at that yet, and have you made a 'I'd like that in my cockpit' choice yet, even if it's not available yet.

Chris why dont you install oxygen and fly in the flight levels like Nikos wings does. You would get some nice tail winds there.
Ralph Hippard we have oxygen and do fly up there sometimes. This particular flight the winds were the lowest where we flew and got worse going higher.

I notice this with every aviation video I watch - the tires all look flat. Even the 200+ psi tires on a C-5 Super Galaxy looked this way as I stood next to it last year. That is one HEAVY bird right there!

Did getting there with min fuel have to do with some of the upgrades your having done ?
I wanted to show how you can extend the range when needed in addition to having Minimal fuel. They do need to drain the fuel tanks to install the new Cies Fuel Senders.
