      Its important to distinguish between devotion and obsession. He fawned upon her and both Ernest and Wallis played that to their advantage. Ultimately she was trapped by his cloying affections. She married him from cowardice. In the end she despised and abused him and did not bother to attend him at his deathbed.

She carried herself well, deferred to her husband publically, was always impeccably dressed, came from old, wealthy, and high bred Southerners (her father's early death caused her financial loss and insecurity). Wallis did the world a favor. QEII was a fabulous queen for more than 60 years and stabilized the monarchy. She had children to continue the reign after her but even if the Prince did ascend the throne, when he died, QEII would have still ascended to the throne since The Prince and Wallis had no children.

      By getting Edward to abdicate and replacing him with a better king, Britain showed that the monarch should be chosen, not by order of birth, but by selecting which person is best for the job. So why not throw the job open to applicants and select from a wider field? That way you don't have to keep one family captive, forcing them to do a job no matter how they feel about it. The "royals" are kept as slaves. Charles and William are unable to choose the jobs they might like, are forced to be Anglicans, have to live in Britain and have to endure endless scrutiny from birth to death, like in the film "The Truman Show." Ask yourself, how many diamonds would it take to buy your freedom?

    The truth is that Edward never wanted the responsibility and hard work of kingship and he used his love for Wallis as an out. They could have had a morganatic marriage but Edward rejected that. He only wanted the privileges of kingship but not the sacrifices and hard work. Wallis wrote a letter to the govt saying she would leave Edward and step back from the whole situation but Edward was determined to badicate anyway. When Wallis realized this she felt she had no choice but to stick by his side and go ahead with the wedding, when she had never wanted to marry him. It was just a bit if fun. Too late she realized she still loved her husband Ernest, and she did so for the rest of her life, but he had fallen in love with someone else and moved on with his life. She had nothing left but Edward.

    Wasn't there a little interregnum where Wallis picked up some useful skills in the oldest profession after her first marriage? Her hold over Edward VIII was said to be related to that skill set. A poor sad little boy whose natural mother was incapable of or unwilling to give him any affection or intimacy and who was emotionally wrecked as a result. It shows in his eyes: a sad, lonely little boy drawn inescapably to what had made him the mess he was.

    For all his faults (if not wishing to be held captive in a golden cage is a fault) Edward was treated appallingly by the British Monarchy. Absolutely atrociously. And they call themselves a 'family'! Quite shocking in itself.

    • @heatherhillman1
      @heatherhillman1 5 років тому +1

      Well, considering that current Monarchs used to kill former Monarchs.........even family members, I'd say he got off easy. Besides, it was mainly his mother, Mary of Teck, and his sister-in-law that conspired to keep them out. I don't think they were necessarily trying to punish Edward, they didn't want Wallis to be rewarded for her part in the whole debacle. Mary, George and Elizabeth were deeply unhappy with Edward's decision to put his personal wants ahead of his duty to his country. Since it was an unprecedented event (a still living former king), no one really knew how to respond to it, but my guess is the crown's main goal was to cut Wallis out as best they could. If Edward was a part of that, well.... so be it. Edward and George were very close growing up. When Edward gave up the crown and walked away, it destroyed their relationship. George simply didn't want to be King, never expected to be King. His wife and daughters were convinced that being King led George to an early grave, and they were probably right.

    • @TheGreatestBeyonder
      @TheGreatestBeyonder 5 років тому +1

      @@heatherhillman1 A good response Heather, thank you. You summed it up with "George simply didn't want to be King". I appreciate it wasn't his primary existence and like Prince Harry of today, he was more than happy to be the 'spare' (why work when you can take the tax payers hard earned cash for next to nothing)...? (they have to explain themselves slightly more these days... but not much more)) but since Edward relinquished his duties (and let's be honest, because Wallace was only part of his desire to abdicate... as he was already 'looking for the exit'), and as you quite rightly point out Mary, George and Elizabeth were deeply unhappy with his decision, George had to step-up-to-the-plate or do the same as Edward (which morally and mentally he knew he either could not or would not). I'm sure in some part the role of King may of contributed to his death but ultimately I believe his smoking ended his life prematurely. After all, many monarchs have lived longer and most, certainly today. I'm afraid I refuse to sugar-coat it. Edward wanted out AND as a human being he had every right to leave. Regardless of how long standing our monarchy has survived they still have choices and had it happened today I'm sure we would have been even more understanding. But I also understand the Royal families need to 'retain' the Thrown. It's the most elite position one can aspire to and comes with a recession proof position, if you can stomach it...

    Whatever might be true about Wallis, she didn't cause the downfall of Edward. They were together long enough for Edward to chose reason if he had wanted to. She was driven by a desire for prestige, and he was driven by a desire for acceptance. Their partnership was disastrous; neither of them got it right.

    This was interesting in the fact that this is rather a positive take on Wallis Simpson. I listened to an interview that she gave...she came off as being quite enchanting. I can easily see why so many people were so taken with her. BUT, that's only on the surface. Simpson was a very dangerous woman. The last thing she needed to do was become queen. There were also interviews with the Duke & Duchess where they supported Hitler. The last place Churchhill wanted the Duke was Germany - but they both went there anyway. That's one of the reasons that the couple were placed in the Bahamas. Wallis' letters state how much she hated being there - and referred to the local native population as lazy n-word. I agree she was a fascinating person. But she was also a very dangerous person....with a very loose mouth.

    He loved his country more than anything, it was a stupid rumor that he sided with hitler, started by the people in power that wanted him out because of the changes they feared he would bring. The wave he gave in Germany for instance was not a hi- hitler only a royal wave. he went to Germany to study the great housing that they had developed. England had a horrible housing shortage, Edward was wanting to help England. The people close to him said he would have never would gone along with the plan to dethrone his brother. Edward would not have done anything to hurt England, he did hope that war would not come but was helpless to stop it and if he had been king I think war would have happened anyway, he was not that different from his brother.

    The general public has forgotten how a severe up bringing informs the later adult. Edward, not the only one but certainly one of the most high profile, was sexually dysfunctional , needing to dress up as a baby and pushed around in a pram. With that came the importance of having a very domineering partner ....Yes! S&M and that's how he rolled. Being a dom to 'real king' must've been intimidating to most but Wallis had it in her to assume this role. Edward, of course, was getting what he needed and wanted and although SHE was getting bored of the role, HE would've been crushed (and maybe more) if she hadn't gone along with it plus she was making mountains in jewels and now had a certain notoriety whether good or not. And 'royals" didn't need 'this' 'rumor' verified if she left.........................

      No she never wanted to be queen. She never wanted to marry Edward....it was all just a bit of fun for her as she still loved her husband Ernest. She had no idea the prince would fall for her in a big way and that he would give up the throne for her. She tried every which way to get out of the marriage but he wouldn't let her. When she realized he was going to abdicate she wrote a letter to the govt to say she was prepared to leave him and move away to another country but Edward, who had never wanted to be king, was determined to abdicate anyway. When Wallis realised this she knew she was trapped and would have looked really bad if she abandoned him now, and by now he was all she had. Her ex husband Ernest had fallen in love with another woman and married her. Wallis had nothing left and nowhere to go....

Holy moly inbreeding at it's finest. What an ugly man, and dull, and his tone and slow talking makes him sound confused. The powers that be got what they wanted. Edward got to live the good life he so enjoyed and Wallis got caught up in the game.

      +Msunbird02 King Edward thought quite rightly that she was fit to become his Queen. Her two previous marriages were not the problem, most of the Royal family had affairs and did not have the decency to marry. Elizabeth Bowes Lyon who had been spurned by the Prince of Wales never forgave Mrs Simpson for marrying the man she loved.
