I’m a flight attendant for a major airlines and I love watching your videos to get a different point of view! I love traveling and hope to do so long after I retire, keep up the great job but it’s not a job when you are having fun! ✈
The word Saran was formed from a combination of John Reilly's wife's and daughter's names, Sarah and Ann Reilly. In 1949, Dow introduced Saran Wrap, a thin, clingy plastic wrap that was sold in rolls and used primarily for wrapping food. It quickly became popular for preserving food items stored in the refrigerator.
I flew AA many many years ago. Back then it was outstanding. Sorry to see how it is these days. By the by. $4500 is extortionate. I have not long bought a new (to me) second hand car for far less than that. Good video as ever Noel.
Hi noel, im Argentinian and live in Argentina and have to say that you got pretty unlucky. I see you travelled on board the A330 registered LV-GKP, which is Aerolineas Argentinas second oldest plane in its fleet. Fun fact I also travelled on LV-GKP, and its age was visible inside the cabin. Aerolineas has 10 A330s in its fleet and there are two, LV-GKO and LV-GKP, the two oldest that are really old and have a slightly worse configuration. Aerolineas has 4 other A330s that were delivered brand new directly from Airbus that are 8-10 years old, these have a slightly better configuration but are a lot newer. And I also have to say that Madrid isn’t Aerolineas’s best route, because they usually send these 6 A330s there with the “worst” configuration. Miami, punta cana or cancun usually, not always, are the routes that Aerolineas chooses to send it’s 4 A330s with the better configurations. For example 2 A330s feature a 1-2-1 in some rows of Business. It was the cabin of the airline that previously operated those A330s. Just wanted to let you know that, anyway, the pricing is so overly ridiculous. I don’t defend Aerolineas or particularly like it, but it can get a little better than that. And tip if you ever come back to Argentina, fly JetSmart, its the best airline for domestic flights in Argentina in my opinion. Love and really enjoy your videos and adventures, and I’m a fan of your personality, thank you for visiting my country!
The funny thing is that "Saran Wrap" as a brand is now using an entirely different chemical formula for the plastic film than what was patented as Saran Wrap.
The loo appeared to be an accessible one, and as such the larger than expected changing table is likely designed to accommodate (as best as possible, given the constraints of an airplane loo) non-infants with disabilities that need to be changed by a care-giver.
Your comment regarding how grim the terminal was in Madrid reminded me of a time several years ago where a group of us went to Jamaica. Our flight arrived in Jamaica, along with 3 or 4 other flights and a cruise ship, all about the same time, and we had to stand in line to go thru customs in a non-air conditioned room, that had seen better days. That took us about 2 hours. Then, when we left we were in the upstairs area and it had all these beautiful shops, restaurants etc. You'd think they'd want that when you arrived in the country, not leaving it. Needless to say, have no desire to go back there.
Noel, one thing to point out. Depending on the airline and the culture, the plastic wrap is considered polite and a way to prove the product is fresh. Now for the most part smart airlines will have the staff remove it just at the time of delivery to your seat. Some just don't know or care. But the product would have been in the meal trolley wrapped individually like this right until serving.
If the outside of the plane reflects the inside and the food ---> you´re a brave man, Noel Thank you for the insights and warm greetings from Basel, Switzerland
As an Argentinian follower, I'm sorry you had this bad experience on our airline. Just for a little bit of context, and not to excuse anything here, but worth saying...the airline has been having a rough time. For the past 10 years or so, goverments and people have been fighting over the budget the airline has, and everything due to the economic situation of the country. There would be amazing if they improved the service, but I think we do our best with what we have. The pricing made no sense to me though...and I'll give you that. Just one more note...the "automatic" passport controls in Ezeiza are ONLY for Argentinians older than 16yo. Maybe the signs were not great, but they are there. People usually just queue for the machines when they should actually go to the other queue for manual control unless you're from Argentina. So, for next time, instead of doing that queue, just pass through the people keeping your right, and you'll see another entrance for the manual control right before the entrance to the "machines" section. I'll save you some time. Also, if you have any Visa Signature card, you can book the "Express" lane 1 week in advance and that's hardly ever full. If you have Mastercard Black you can book that as well but you have to pay 35usd.
@@thebouncer9107 You're right...machines for going out I believe work with anyone. The ones on the "inbound" inmigration are only for Argentina citizens.
From Wikipedia: "Saran is a trade name used by S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. for a polyethylene food wrap. The Saran trade name was first owned by Dow Chemical for polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), along with other monomers. The formulation was changed to the less effective polyethylene in 2004 due to the chlorine content of PVDC."
The reason they probably don't want to unwrap it before serving it is because they could drop it and cause an accident if they can't find what they've dropped, oh and the smell when it goes off if it goes under a seat or something and can't be retrieved.
This was interesting Noel, for some reason I was expecting something with a bit more pizazz to Argentina's national flag carrier. Another fabulous vid! Take care now and muchos gracias.
In the United States, "clingfilm" is commonly referred to as "plastic wrap" or "Saran wrap." "Saran wrap" is a brand name that has become a generic term for this type of plastic film, similar to how "Kleenex" is used for facial tissues.
My mom used to call all soft drinks Coke, but now Energy Drinks are probably close to being as popular-- yet nobody has started saying Red Bull for all energy drinks😳😳😳😳 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
baby changing beds are not just for babies. Sometimes children with additional needs may need to use it and that looks big enough for up to about 7/8 year olds. That is a a really good changing facility for an aircraft.
Oof, that price for what you got, you're right, extortionate! Food not great, loung not great, weirdly configured loo and the rest. Thank you for taking us with you and showing us what to avoid as much as which airlines to give our money to.
It’s Saran wrap not sarin wrap. Saran is the brand name for a type of plastic wrap in the US. Just like Ziplock is the brand name for a type of plastic sandwich bag.
The link between saran wrap and the Falklands War was that the Capt of the main Vulcan bomber on Black Buck 1 used his sandwich wrap to plug a leak in his cabin windshield.
Ay caramba! It didn’t bode well for you from the airport in Buenos Aires, queues, slop with plastic cutlery, and aeroplanes with 90’s seats. Still, the Malbec was nice and you made it to beautiful Madrid in one piece. Nice one Noel, enjoy mate! Oh yeah, loved your rhyming in the video too 😂
We call plastic wrap Saran Wrap because it was the first plastic wrap that came out back in the 60's. When I flew Aerolinas Argentina back in the 80's, the flight crew wouldn't speak in English; and the food was horrible.
I wouldn’t be surprised if AA is in such a dire shape because of the economic troubles in the country, since it’s a government owned airline. Goes to show that selling it to a private company may be the best option to improve service. I always fly Copa Airlines whenever I go to Argentina, since that’s the cheapest from Texas. Would be cool to see a video from you on them!
It’s kind of neat to see the baby changing station a little bigger, that way the mother can put her diaper bag up there as well to grab things out of the diaper bag easier, i’ve never seen one that big.
A rough experience & very expensive but glad they got you there safely. Beautiful Madrid Spain would love to see that country. Enjoy Spain Noel ❤️❤️❤️ Much love on to your next journey.
Back in the 90's my husband was living & working in Madrid and I commuted each weekend between LHR & Madrid. Would you believe I used to fly with A.Argentinas . They used to fly EZE - LHR - MAD...................they used 747-200's and the fares were dirt cheap. I never had any problems and I flew them alot on that route.
I flew on numerous flights with Aerolinas Argentina back in 2014. To this day I will always remember them as the absolute worst airline I ever encountered. Cancelled flights with no help, no hotels or any kind of information or vouchers. Giving away my pre booked seats. Horrible staff. Overall Horrible airline
Back when I used to work sales and marketing for Airbus we used to call those angled beds that you slide down during the night a ‘wedgie seat’. Most airlines had them, to be fair. From the late 90s to about 2017 or 18. BA’s yin-yang seats were a revelation, and then Cathay came along with herringbone. Luvverly.
Jeez, that’s rubbish for that price! Main course looked like reheated roadkill. Thing I’ve noticed about landing at Madrid is how small some of the towns seem considering they have their own coliseums for bullfighting.
10:48 So in America we tend to call things by certain brand names instead of generic words. So cling film is Seran wrap, adhesive bandages are Bandaids, etc. etc.
Saran (suh-ran or sah-ran, depending on the region) Wrap is a brand originally made by Dow in 1949. It's creator named it after both his wife Sarah and his daughter Ann; hence Saran. In America, we tend to just call things by the most popular national brand name for the item whether it's made by that brand or not. ex: adhesive bandage is a Band-Aid, facial tissue is Kleenex, cling film is Saran Wrap, reusable containers are Tupperware, etc.
Saran Wrap is a brand name and it just stuck for all kinds of plastic wrap etc. My dad kind of likens it to saying a certain brand name for a type of Soda in parts of the US (like no matter what- if you're in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska if you order a soda- you're ordering a Coke, even if its a Sprite/7up, Dr. Pepper or even a Pepsi).
I miss Spanair based out of Madrid despite being very old school and long out of business. The Spanair station manager at Washington Dulles was hella cute too! Never got to pay her back properly for the awesome non-rev tickets either.
I'm not a fan of airline food maybe its because I once worked in a place where its cooked, prepared, stored & then transported onto planes. How they manage to keep it looking fresh, is a mystery to me. I also never buy food at airports but prefer to buy myself a cheap take away on my way to the airport. I then ask the flight attendant to warm it up for me as they serve passengers or Ill simply eat it as we wait to board. If its a long overnight flight, I'll usually only have a cup of coffee in the morning because the plane will soon land anyway & I can buy proper food from somewhere.
I too was underwhelmed flying AR in the past couple of months. I would characterize their service as basic and would not go out of my way to fly them again.
I kinda miss those old seat configurations when I have both seats to myself. I would use the window seat for sleeping, and then the aisle seat for sitting.
'Saran' is a brand of cling wrap. Same as 'Kleenex' is a brand of facial tissue. Most companies work hard to ensure their brand name does NOT become the defacto name for something since once it does they risk loosing their trademark.
I've always thought Aerolineas Argentinas is lacking compared to other airlines considering they been flying dated second hand 747s and A340s on their long haul for years in recent while other carriers are ordering new widebodies with the latest cabin refresh
Americans typically call a product by the name they are first introduced to that product by. Saran Wrap (plastic wrap) is how we distinguish from Reynold's wrap (Aluminum foil) . We call all brands of plastic "Saran" and all brands of aluminum "Reynolds". Most parents who didn't know better used the word "Nintendo" to refer to ALL video games.
Although plastic wrap was created in 1933, Saran Wrap came out in 1949 by a famous American company called S.C. Johnson. S.C Johnson is known for brands like Ziplock, Raid, etc. The name "Saran" came from a combination of the founder's wife and daughter's names.
If you have a choice between Aerolineas Argentinas and something else, always choose the “something else”, even if it’s Air Koryo. As per “Saran” wrap… that’s exactly what it is. It’s a brand that dominated the product for decades and became the colloquial name.
Years ago, flew United to BA from Miami. At customs, they had a traffic light (called it “the lottery light”). You pushed a button, and if you got a green light, off you go. If you got red, they opened and searched your baggage. Everyone got red-took over an hour to get through…
I first flew Aerolineas in 1977 and we.were.served beef tenderloin in Economy! Over the years Air Canada began direct flights so never flew them again, glad i didnt but they used to have the best food, best service and the prettiest stewardesses!
For me Aerolineas is amazing only domestically within Argentina. I usually fly them for sub-4h flights around the country. I would not choose Aerolineas for international or transatlantic flights just because - as you mentioned - the competition is miles better. So far I have taken either Avianca or Swiss from EZE to Europe with a connection.
Ignorant comments from people who have not the first idea of “british” food. There is no such thing as the uk isfour countries with great individual regional food
To your question “not sure who’s paying,” maybe the Argentinian government flying their employees to Madrid, or government contractors somehow obligated to use the state airline?
Yes, Noel, Saran Wrap is a brand name of plastic wrap, so we basically call all of it Saran Wrap, as a generalization. Just like we call all facial tissues Kleenex. I'm quite certain you lot do this, too, lol. BTW, Noel, King Charles is my second cousin once removed. HMTQ was my second cousin. I'm a direct descendant of Queen Victoria. I have a courtesy title, but of course, am not allowed to use it here in America. So I'm related to the two longest reigning monarchs of England. I swear, Noel, you find the craziest airlines to fly on. How the heck do you even discover them? I would have been terrified to fly that plane!
Hey Noel! I hope you are doing fine. I remember your wife got sick a while ago. I hope she is okay. Yeah this flight was kind of expensive for the service you got! All the best from Miami. ❤
Seems to be an airline business class from 20+ years ago but charging modern day prices. Definitely would not want to fly in this. The baby seat in the loo would be more comfortable than the seat - haha. Another great review.
Aerolineas Argentinas looks like absolute shite. Over USD 1000 more than the competition, which offers a superior product. The Argentine government should be ashamed of this airline. AR can't afford new widebodies, so it would be better off ditching its long-haul flights and instead focusing on domestic and short-haul international service.
"Cling film" was invented in the 1930s by the American company Dow Chemical. Saran was one of their trademarks [until they sold it to Johnson & Johnson or Beatrice, can't recall] - thus 'Saran Wrap'. Like Kleenex [Kimberly-Clark], Band-Aid [Johnson & Johnson], and Escalator [Otis Elevator Company] it has become a genericized trade mark/name.
Ahh yes , I remember flying with them once in the 90,s . An experience I would rather forget , crap food , 0 service from the staff and crew ( they disappeared after dinner never to be seen again till just before landing ) broken overhead lockers , broken seats and a bolt missing from the floor panel which blew cold 🥶 air straight up my left jeans leg plus a throughly filthy aircraft as well . See things haven’t changed much , not surprised .
I would have been absolutely miserable sleeping like that. One miserable flight I was on was Flying Tiger. It ended up being 21 hours. Nothing on board just crammed pack with Marines. I was a Navy Corpsman assigned to them.
Aerolíneas was once a really good airline when I was a kid back in the 1980’s. The flight attendants were on different tv commercials for different products as I recognized a few of them from the big 747 that took me there. I was a bit too energetic as a youth for the flight attendants. So, the flight attendants put me to work in the galley where I helped unwrap the mid flight snack!!!😂 It was a good experience. It makes me sad that they are a shadow of what they once were. The flight attendants were helping me with my Spanish since I was on my way there to learn the language… They use to be one of the best airlines in the world…
l was blessed with my first AR flight feeling more like a hostage flying from LAX to EZE with stops in MEX & SCL. One of the most unpleasant 14 hours of my life.
The word Saran was formed from a combination of John Reilly, the inventors, wife's and daughter's names, Sarah and Ann Reilly. He was an employee of Dow Chemical, the maker.
saran wrap is just a brand name, and it's the same kind of case as bandaid. It is just a big enough brand that it has just become what it is called. People don't say adhesive bandage, they say bandaid. So also they don't say plastic wrap they just say saran wrap.
Good day Noel. As someone who is going thru a horrible flu virus, it was great joy to see a bowl of "white slop". 🤢🤣 Awesome episode again. Cheers from the Canadian Rockies l*l.
Yeh Noel.......I agree 💯 that for the price paid, you should have received a much, much better experience. 😮 I look forward to your next video of your trip! 👍👍😃
Aerolineas Argentinas is the most subsidized, overbudgeted airline in the world. Yet, it keeps operating at a loss of $ 200M a year, even having a monopoly over the skies of Argentina before the Milei government. Soon will be privatized and probably broken into smaller regional airlines.
Another fine episode of "I fly a crappy airline so you don't have to".
This week Noel eats dubious chicken and flies Air Anus so you don't have to.
I flew with them a ton. Their short flights are actually very comfy. I always sleep like a baby with them.
I was waiting to see if you worked a Falklands war reference in. Didn’t have to wait long. Bravo.

Yes Noel. Saran Wrap is a brand name for a plastic wrap.

Aerolineas hasn't flown 747s or A340s in like 10 years or more.
@ yes I said “dated”. 2010s still recent delta and United still flying the 757s and 767s which some are quite old now
@ back then when the A340s and 747s were flying for AR, they are quite dated and lacking comped the latest offerings back then of their competitors
Saran Wrap is a popular brand name of cling film in the US yes, like Hoover is used in the UK for a vacuum cleaner
"hairbrush, very handy" 😅
Hi Noel. To add to the other notes, Saran wrap is pronounced " Suh-Ran' ", with the accent on Ran.
or suh-ran-uh-rap. Although I haven't heard it used in years
If you have a choice between Aerolineas Argentinas and something else, always choose the “something else”, even if it’s Air Koryo.
Great video Noel 😊
Where the “ Falkland’s 🇬🇧 “ T-shirt 🤷♂️
The lounge seemed to set the tone for your entire trip. I would be miffed too after paying that.
Saran is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable.
I once stayed for 2 months a while back in a town near Madrid in winter. Trust me, it gets cold and snowy.
If a british guy starts complaining about food it has to be horrible hahahahah
That’s what I was thinking. Normally he gets excited by sausages and chips.
lol this is true
Ignorant comments from people who have not the first idea of “british” food. There is no such thing as the uk isfour countries with great individual regional food
Agree this is an ignorant comment - all countries produce great food , you just gotta find it. Ever heard of 'English Breakfast'?
@ yes and I have tried it. Nothing special hahahah. Are you from the UK?
To your question “not sure who’s paying,” maybe the Argentinian government flying their employees to Madrid, or government contractors somehow obligated to use the state airline?
We calll Saran Wrap, saran wrap for the same reason Brit’s call a vacuumcleaner a Hoover
It used to be great! It is sad to see Aerolineas Argentinas in this state!
An excellent honest review. I will choose another airline when given the choice. I appreciate your Business class reviews.
9:52 all we need now is for Noel to review tat from 99p Store equivalents from where he travels to get the full Ashens experience.
great to watch on a sunday meal, thank you noel!
Hey Noel! I hope you are doing fine. I remember your wife got sick a while ago. I hope she is okay. Yeah this flight was kind of expensive for the service you got! All the best from Miami. ❤
I understand the word-play on Aerolineas Argentineas might be tedious or offensive to some, but I found it delightful-eas!
Seems to be an airline business class from 20+ years ago but charging modern day prices. Definitely would not want to fly in this. The baby seat in the loo would be more comfortable than the seat - haha. Another great review.
“The chill chair.” I lost it
Aerolineas Argentinas looks like absolute shite. Over USD 1000 more than the competition, which offers a superior product. The Argentine government should be ashamed of this airline. AR can't afford new widebodies, so it would be better off ditching its long-haul flights and instead focusing on domestic and short-haul international service.
It is. The current government is trying to sell the airline but the opposition and trade unions want to stop them.
I didn't have to wait as long as you did at Ezeiza, but I was generally unimpressed with the airport.
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!
Well done!
Cool Video, Noel's subtle humor. 4500k is a major rip off... Noel took one for the team°
that Ashens refrence took me so off guard, I absolutely lost it.
Yay it's time to watch the latest episode on what is probably my favorite channel.
He dropped the Aerolineo Argentinio video :)
$4500 got me business class on EMIRATES from JFK to Dubai and then to Seychelles.
I had business class lounge access in New York and in Dubai.
The plane probably from the year 2000 😅
I would have been absolutely miserable sleeping like that.
I HATE the 2x2x2 configuration. That's basically "premium economy" on better airlines.
New Business class is all 1x2x1.
Ashens! 😂😂😂😂
Hello!
Love it!
The word Saran was formed from a combination of John Reilly, the inventors, wife's and daughter's names, Sarah and Ann Reilly. He was an employee of Dow Chemical, the maker.
Yes, cling wrap can be called saran wrap. The accent is on the "ran" ❤
saran wrap is just a brand name, and it's the same kind of case as bandaid.
Awesome episode again.
Cheers from the Canadian Rockies l*l.
Hello Noel Philips Another great show Thank you ❤📨
I thought £535.82 Newport to JFK was expensive!
