In Bird's 1993 retirement ceremony when Magic said he's the greatest basketball player ever, Magic and the Lakers had been beaten in the '91 Finals by Jordan and the Bulls. So he knew very well how good Jordan was. In Larry's career he and the Celtics swept Jordan's Bulls TWICE in the playoffs. They never lost in the postseason to the Bulls as long as Larry was playing, and had a 17-11 regular season record against Jordan's Bulls. So you can say, like Magic did, that Larry is arguably the greatest player of all time.
Watch "Larry Bird greatest passer re-edit" and it'll blow your mind how great a passer Larry was.

Bird was one of the best players in the league right from day one. He made 1st team All-NBA as a ROOKIE. (Do you know who HASN'T done that? LeBron, KD, Harden, Giannis, Jokic, Embiid, Curry...NO active player.) Here are his MVP voting finishes for the first nine years of his career: 4th (as a rookie!), 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st (still only the third player to win three in a row - although Jokic has a shot at it this year), 3rd and 2nd. Injuries slowed him down later in his career.
Also, he didn't just put up empty numbers. He impacted WINNING. He led the Celtics to 61 wins in his rookie year after the Celtics had only won 29 the year before (and with no other significant roster changes).

Well, they also added Pistol Pete Maravich that year, but this was after injuries had reduced him to a shadow of his former self. He could still make beautiful plays, but if he'd still had his 1974 form along with rookie Bird, Cedric Maxwell, and the rest, the 76ers would have been in a lot of trouble in the eastern conference finals. Now, Dr. J and company could handle trouble, they were tough as hell... but that series would have been VERY interesting if the Celtics had had that one extra element.

This video doesn't even scratch the surface of Bird's greatness. Check out his battles with MJ ( lots of videos on that), his passing skills, "Larry Bird Greatest Passer Ever", his trash talking (again, lots of videos on that) and many more. The thing about Bird though is that he did EVERYTHING on the court, and never stopped moving, positioning himself to help his team every second of the game. He was a nightmare for any defender. fun fact about that. when the dream team was being assembled, jordan was asked to join first. he said he wanted to wait to see who would join up, since he was previously on an olympic basketball team before and didn't want to be on a team full of college kids. the recruiter then asked magic, who had to retire due to his HIV diagnosis, and he said "i won't do it unless larry joins." larry, who was a few months away from retiring at this point and his back was absolutely wrecked, was asked and when he heard magic what said, he readily agreed. with both magic and larry on the team, the rest fell in to place and the last to officially join was MJ.

He was easily one of the best players in NBA history, in fact my number one pick of all time, Jordan a close 2nd place.
It is really difficult for young people who did not watch 80s basketball to get a firm grasp of what was it like. I have watched the NBA from the late 70s until recent times, so I have witnessed the level of play decade after decade. 80s NBA was rough, physical, holding jerseys, hand checks, hard fouls, elbows in the face, ribs, back. Tripping players, fights, etc. And yes, the 80s were the Golden Era of basketball, and Bird was the primary reason, along with Magic. Bird, from Day One in the NBA knew how to win, taking a losing Celtics team all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals as a rookie.
Many players have Bird in their all time five. Including Kobe Bryant, (one of my Top 10 players) here he is stating giving his starting five. ua-cam.com/users/shortslbi-_7u8uQM

Hey Jordan LEARNED from Bird! If this is your first Larry Bird video you got a lot to learn. Check out NBA Legends Talk About Larry Bird. And while you watch all his greatness in videos, remember he was playing with a bad back, Achilles surgery, and other health issues, but never took meds. He played in pain and still played like the GOAT!

Bird broke ankles because he was living in the defenders head. He was elite at shooting, driving the lane, and passing, all from the same look. Players didn't want to draw the assignment of guarding him, they would have nightmares. Alot of his highlights show him being double, triple teamed.

New sub here. Looking forward to see you learn more about Bird and the 80s & 90s. Bird's teammates learned to always be ready to catch the ball because Larry made a conscious effort to include the team especially if someone was struggling, he always knew where teammates were going to be and passed without looking at them. MJ watched the 3 point contest and said he is glad he didn't have to follow Bird after watching him win while still wearing his warm-up jacket. LeBron has said more than once that he learned a lot from watching Larry Bird play and picked him for his top three. MJ was swept twice by Bird and the Celtics. Please pause when you want to comment because you are missing the info that the commentator/players are sharing. Enjoyed your reaction.

Bird and Magic had a serious rivalry. There's a documentary about them doing a shoe commercial at Larry's home on his basketball court. They became amazing friends. When Magic announced he was going to leave basketball it upset Bird so much he said he didn't even want to keep playing.

He came back into that game with a broken cheekbone and a serious concussion that left him seeing double. Rumor has it that he sneaked away from the trainer to go back out and finish the game. Not to mention his major back problems that caused him to have to set on a heating pad during time outs so he could keep playing. He went on to win Coach of the Year while coaching the Pacers to the playoffs and was later awarded Executive of the Year as their general manager

You have only scratched the surface my friend larry and magics rivalry saved the nba when it was on its knees. Without these two legends there would probaly be no jordan kobe lebron curry or shaq. Their impact was as big on the basketball court as it was off it. Try his thrash talking video or making the case or he best passing redit version. Magics mixtape is a must too. But as far as mixtapes go Jordans bulls mixtape is by far the most savage there is absolutely no mercy from the billy goat. Although jordan never really got the better of larry with a 6-0 in the playoffs against bird 23-11 if you include the regular season. All 3 all legends and brought something different to the game. Pete Maravich or pistol pete is another legend that is underated too.

Bird was one of the greatest passing forwards, ever. He was unselfish, with over 5,600 assists. What he lacked in speed (such as athleticism possessed by Lebron James), he made up with supreme mastery of fundamentals, incredible IQ and ability to see the entire court. He and Magic Johnson became great friends off the court. (ua-cam.com/video/iVKJ7IAOKLI/v-deo.html).

11:30 "Dang! What was thatt?" They were "going' for the ball". That's what it was called back then. If I remember correctly that was just a regular foul and not a flagrant/"intentional" one. Today's NBA (which, TBH, I don't even bother to watch) is like the NFL's era of when the defender looking cross-eyed at the receiver drew a pass interference call.
