I really liked the closing statement of RR about how artists should come together in a more systemic way, and be helpful to each other and to the larger community, especially during these covid times. I also agree that this idea of free kutcheris eleven months in a year, with the December month alone being ticketed (1:52 hour of the conversation) that RR spoke about is not a sustainable model in the long run. There are however a couple of things (a) most of those 5,000 kutcheris he spoke about are of upcoming artists who are not known yet and hence unlikely to gain mass interest (b) the infrastructure where most concerts are held are very casual, and is not worthy of a concert venue where highly skilled musicians come together; the same people who will cringe paying Rs 250 for a ticket would not bat an eyelid paying similar money for a 3-hour movie at a mulitplex. While it does not tell the full story, there is a message there that if you provide a fantastic ambience to enjoy music, you can rightfully demand decent money, and over time, that model will stay (c) the current format of presenting music has been around for over 5-7 decades; there is absolutely no attempt at innovation in presenting music in new ways (with TMK being a sole exception in a some sense) - say bringing dance and vocal music together in an interesting way, or with appropriate stage sets that transports the audience physically and mentally to a place or time when that particular score was written. Basically, carnatic music industry has been lazy about doing anything more than just offering a moderate quality space for musicians to showcase their art. If you as an industry/community do not invest in presenting your music in an aesthetically imaginative way, why would audience invest their time or money? I am not attempting to give a free pass to audience (they have had it good so far for sure), but there is a huge huge room to monetise that is just not being done. MadRasana and their ilk are wonderful green shoots in this space.

Naresh Sadasivan very well put together about the how the Carnatic music concert experience has been stagnant for decades ! While every other industry has had to move with the times, the classical arts has made very little efforts both in terms of the venues, ambience and also content and presentations. About time, the artists invest in this aspect and these are creative lot, surely they can floor us with their innovations :))

Excellent interview and conversation exploring the guru disciple dynamics and so much more. Really enjoyed listening to this. Sri TMK and Ritvik were exceedingly well spoken, thoughtful and insightful. Kudos to the interviewers on thoughtful questions which sparked a great conversation.

Thanks for uploading the video! Since I am a young student of carnatic music, I enjoy listening to such dialogues between interesting artists and this did not disappoint. In such depressing times, this is indeed comedy gold

You guys are doing a fabulous job with your interviews. Insightful questions, great conversations. Thanks. I once bumped into Sri TMK at an airport and we coincidentally on two aisle seats next to each others and we spent 3 of the 4 hour journey talking. We spoke a bit about music, and a lot more about cricket (it was just before the 2007 cricket world cup I think and he mentioned he was heading to WI later that year) and a couple of mutual friends. He is a great conversationalist, beautifully rounded, with such well-thought and nuanced positions. Keep up the good work, guys.

Rithvik, there is no need to compare TMK with other musicians. People have their own journey and calling.
