  • The Rarest Amtrak Train Ever .. You Wont Believe This One!
    This is a pretty rare sight to see. Here we have a Norfolk Southern Locomotive that had to rescue a disabled Amtrak train in the middle of winter! Here you can see the Norfolk Southern Locomotive leading the Amtrak train as it goes through Sheridan and Dunkirk New York. Filmed on January 10th 2015.This is very interesting to see a Norfolk Southern unit leading a rescued Amtrak train #48, the Lake Shore Limited, on CSX trackage. This rescue must have taken place while the eastbound Lake Shore Limited was still running on Norfolk Southern trackage. I know that the Lake Shore Limited runs through Chesterton, Indiana on Norfolk Southern trackage but I do not know at what point the Lake Shore Limited transfers from Norfolk Southern trackage to CSX trackage so that the Lake Shore Limited can run on the former New York Central "Water Level Route" to New York City. You were at the Harrington Road crossing in Sheridan, New York when you captured this train on 10 January 2015.

    Have you ever gotten to ride on any of the engines? I did as a kid of 5 years old in 1960, when the Tran that ran through my grandma’s property, stopped and I had been sitting on a fence waving at the engineer! He asked me if I would like to ride with him for the rest of the day, and I said “you bet, but you better ask mom”, so to make a long story short, she said “yes” and I had the time of my life and I was hooked on trains and now I am 74 and am a disabled vet and I live in a nursing home!

    wow! P40's on that Lake Shore Ltd !!! 800 series

  • @ryandavis7593
    @ryandavis7593 2 роки тому +9

    It reminds me of the Sunset Limited coming into El Paso Texas in the 80s. The P30s were notoriously bad units and we would regularly see SP units to the rescue. If the SSL was late it had a GE failure which was almost every time it came through.
    We saw fires, radiator failures, fan failures, fuel pump failures and those P30s coming in looking like badly fired steam locomotives.
    I rode the SSL coming home from Michigan and amazingly came in two and a half hours early behind those GEs. I sat in the station waiting for my mother to come pick me up. The one time those engines ran perfect.
    Greetings from the high plains of Texas.

      Those GE P30CH's, or "Pooches" as they were called, they were not well liked by traincrews. These units were notorious for all the aforementioned issues and were mostly "confined" to the Sunset Limited and the Auto Train.

      I saw an westbound Amtrak train departing from El Paso (I was on the mexican side of the border), and it was pulled by an SP SD40M-2. Later, I saw another Amtrak train pulled by SSW GP60. I always asked to myself why the Amtrak trains sometimes are pulled by freight locomotives. Greetings from Ciudad Juárez, México✌

Did quite a few rescues, and was rescued several times, usually on an underpowered freight, going uphill with 30 or 40 scrap cars, having to stop and phone the IHB dispatcher for permission.*

      The NS unit could have been on loan to CSX and they could have stuck it on there. I remember one year 48 had and electrical issue shortly after they departed Syracuse around December 1998 and CSX let Amtrak use a rather filthy HCLX rent a wreck to tow 48 back west to Syracuse to get the passengers off the train. From there 48 was pulled east and dropped off in DeWitt Yard till Amtrak could send engines out from Rensselaer to get the train out.

      Well, as a Guesstimate, since that red hose is hooked on a Baggage car, it might be a remote signal,for the conductor to signal the engineer, during Backing moves when they get to Boston. Having ridden the Lakeshore Limited, from Chi-Town to N.Y., Penn Station, and knowing the time the Boston section leaves Albany, the shadows show it's not too far east into Mass., and the grunge on the back door frame is stirred up dirt from crossing sanded roads. The length of the train, says it may be hauling football fans East to a Patriot's game, or home from a Chicago, or Buffalo Game.

    So question. In cases like this when the Amtrak power goes down and a freight engine come to the rescue. Where does the engineer that was operating the Amtrak go. Do they stay inside the Amtrak engine during transit or are they up in the freight engine with the engineer and conductor?
