We've been eagerly waiting for months to finally try the production version of Guntherwerks' absolutely insane Twin Turbo Remastered 993. With a Rothsport developed engine making 810 HP in top tune on pump gas and a curb weight under 2,800 lbs, we knew it would be a monster. Fortunately, Gunther have put in the time developing the chassis so it's usable, compliant, communicative and fun. At over $1m and with only 25 units being made, neither you nor I are getting one. But there are few wilder rides on Earth.
NOTE: When we returned the car to Gunther we told them we enjoyed it but it did not feel like full power. They told us the sport mode switch was not working properly, fixed it, and asked us to try the car again, which we did, although we did not have time to film it. On the second go, the car absolutely made an enormous amount of power, substantially more than we experienced in our video. Take away from this what you will, but it is at least possible - Matt
Guntherwerks provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

I'm out of Florida as an insurance adjuster working for the California Fair Plan in Malibu and Palisades, inspecting and estimating total loss rebuilds. Last week, I had a claim with a World Famous Olympian runner known for running in gold shoes in the 90s who had a couple of great supercars in the garage. Yesterday, I had an odd claim in La Canada at the bottom of Angels Crest. As soon as I realized where I was, I shot up the mountain slowly in my Fox rental car, a bright Red Challenger. Holy Shit, you guys are nuts! I saw 3 cops in 10 minutes and couldn't believe how twisty the road was. Wow, you boys can drive! That sucker is no joke, especially in the damp foggy conditions like yesterday. I filmed and posted part of my little drive at 40 mph on FB and gave The Smoking Tire a shout-out and a nod to Matt for braving the threat of the law or driving off a cliff for our viewing pleasure.

This looks amazing, but idk. It's just yet another unobtanium mobile that no one will ever see, touch, or drive because they'll make 22 of them that'll all be stashed away in rich dudes garages to be busted out for one car show a year or bubblewrapped until they're worth well into the 8 figures. They do incredible work and I have nothing but respect for the absolutely jawdropping craftsmanship they put into these cars, its just a shame they can only be afforded by the people least likely to actually use them for what they were made to do.

They actually exist and get driven by people who love and enjoy them, and on the used market they do actual hit a degree of attainability. Obviously you'd still have to live a very successful life and save in a disciplined way, but like, I'm just a truck driver and there's a world where I could be disciplined and plan out the purchase of a $300k car in like, y'know, 30 years or something when I retire. These Singers and Guntherworks cars are just on a whole new level of "haha you wish, peasant."

Doing this in a sense with my generic C5 Z06. It has been a labor of love and will be, when done this Spring, a leap through several generations of Corvette blended as seamlessly as possible with modern hardware. The core is a forged 402 with ccw crank for better high rpm balance and less wear on the bearings in time. Mamo 235 heads with a custom ground cam for rapid spooling will be force fed by a pair of HPT F2 6466s on pump, E85 or C16 and controlled with an R3 by Haltech wired in tandem with the factory ecu which will exist to run the stock dash and keep the car that one step down from race car on the street. Boost by gear? By speed? Traction controlled within percentage of slip? All that and no-lift shifting come with the R3. With so many dispassionate 8 and 10-speed autos and DCTs out in the world I have also engaged a clutch slipper so we keep up with the Joneses in non-prepped scenarios. Because we DO like the flog the "bought not built types." Drivetrain is C6 Z06 6060 and diff upgraded to high spec with sprayers on the box and some custom gearing as well as a wavetrac out back. AP brakes front and rear powered by a ps referenced master. The suspension is in no way stock, but also not set like a race car on the street. Aggressive, correct, tight but not specifically not jarring and custom rate coilovers to aid this. Turn-in ought to feel a bit tighter than factory by use of FDF's min-mantis on a low setting to improve the steering ratio. A smaller diameter steering wheel will be forthcoming. The car is intended to be a jack of many trades. Likely a true master of none, but most won't know the difference. With the turbos on an anti-lag air tank system and the R3 running the show it will have a true Mild-to-Wild function in a car built to hold over 1k if desired. I am just waiting another two weeks for the metal in the garage to warm up and we'll be back in action.

I was more recently seeking a C6 Z06. Much like the S600 I own which was bought because I wanted to experience a V12 saloon at some point in my life, I have wanted the 427 experience as well. Newly married and planning other expenses, a C6 Z06 just never hit my price / fixit ratio. Instead, I lucked into a pretty high test setup being used as a drag car. No one was making serious offered because they were afraid of what is clearly low 1k rw, and this on a factory ecu tuned for E85-only. Not a problem! So I have picked up the "Poor Man's C6 Z06" which is a 99 coupe with forged 427 in a C5-R block sporting AFR/TEA heads, undeclared cam spec, and an F1R kit with similar full drivetrain upgrades, suspension and Brembo GTs on all four. It had made 850rw at 10psi on pump/meth, is currently at 16psi on E85-only but has not been dyno'd. I do plan to get the number figured out. After that I don't yet know what I will do with the car. Keep it SC? Install a Lingenfelter TT kit I have in the basement? With the Z06 coming online and being the real baby of the household, I am leaning toward converting down to NA and using the car for track day laps and races as I start my rookie year here in the northeast. Since there is no need for more than 650rw on the street, and since I expect the nasty h/c combo will still bang out 550 to 600rw in NA trim, or maybe more (?), I figure an all-motor ripper is a great alternative to the turbo car and a great way to compare back and forth between the two.

If fleet mpg requirements and 1000 pounds of safety stuff weren't mandatory I feel like there's a market for building brand new cars from the past. Stuff like an E39 M5, Mercedes 500 SEC and of course air cooled 911s. You could build them as close to original spec if you wanted or you could pack new technology in them, or do something like slapping a supercharger on that M5 with everything else staying the same. People pay top dollar for low milage vintage cars and there's been a number of replica Cobras over the years. That's basically what these resto mods are but the experience of buying a truly new car can't be totally replicated with them

Guntherwerks said they were going to make 70 of the Turbo models. The previous two models were indeed limited to 25 of each though, and the upcoming GWR model is going to be limited to 40

What! Air Cooled with water cooling? Madness! I love it. I've gotta hard time watching someone complain about something I could only wish to own, yet even drive. Apparently it's the only way to be a Car Critic. Like a wife, never satisfied

It’s a weird time in the automotive space. I lusted after F40s, Diablos, etc during the 90s. Shortly after college I was able to afford and buy a used 360, and stuff at that pricing level for the following years.
Now I could afford many of the new “mainstream” super cars. But have zero desire to own any of them. They all feel like playing a video game. Sorta like that first feeling of when the R35 GTR came out.
Like growing up in the 90s, I’m lusting after stuff I cannot afford. Like this beautiful example here!
    First world problems!

Lust for the 90s Super machines has to be the best ever! I just drive Vipers and always feel like I am partaking in all the 90s magic and brutality. Try and we'll sorter Gen 2 Viper is you prefer purity and analog.

@ I love the 1st and 2nd gen viper for what they are. But I live in the mountains and drive right curvy roads… Not the vipers strong suite. Insane gearing, and fairly subpar handling. Not to mention very limited tire choices.

Meanwhile even the r35 GT-R feels very analog compared to the most recent sports cars

Glad they retained the 911 doors 😂. Do they need the vin to avoid testing as a new car? I always wondered about that. The wide front ruins the look imo. Singer does a nicer visual job

I want one so badly. I would ask them to put comfort seats like my m4c, and mild sound deadening so that I could enjoy it more on a daily basis in the summers. The rest of the car could stay as is for me and I may even ask for them to take the track mode tune to lower power just so I can use that and feel safer on the track.
