Some words of advice with water farming. 1. I hit a hard cap on Xbox where no more water at all was being generated. I was making around 550 water. then I made more plants then no matter how many days went by no more water was generated. I did everything. Stored the purifiers, waited days, reloaded, nothing, absolute nothing worked. I now limit myself to only making 560 water bottles a time. This may not affect everyone but I thought I should share. 2. Make a container next to your workshop storage. I make 560 water in one of my farms. I need to take this water out before more water can be generated. I take the water out and place it in a nearby container NOT CONNECTED TO THE WORKSHOP INVENTORY and adventure till i get more water. 3. Another glitch is that companions can (I'm rusty on this one) can either pick up everything in a container if its one type of item or just pick up everything in a container when told to inspect the container. In your nearby container tell dogmeat (or any other follower) to inspect a suitcase with 10,000 bottles of water inside and he'll be able to carry it no problem. 4. This may or may not be an issue. I've read online that similar water items in your workshop can affect production of water. to be safe I store other water items in a container not connected to the workshop inventory. 5. Because of my tip #1 I never go with the perk that connects all the workshop inventories. If you want to transfer a large amount of items from place to place follow tip #3.
Thanks alot for sharing your advice, all very good point. Just some quick responses from me. Yes, you can force a companion to carry as much as you want by asking them to take items from containers. I've never had any issues with the amount of water, regardless if I have supply lines or not. In fact I have at times struggled to sell my water because I have too much. I recall at times I have had close to 1-2k water but this only really happened when I had left a settlement for about 3 in game weeks. Not sure about the others but thankfully I have not seen the other issues but I may have just been lucky.
Aye from the hundreds of hours put into this game and so many opportunities to patch them i truly do believe that devs on the build and gun section put these in on purpose for the more hardcore players so can do start from fresh level up quickly using "All the Features " that you learn and be very precise with alot especially timing of button presses i cant wait for fallout 5 but considering its highly likely its going to be outsourced to another Team just breaks my heart 😢 thanks for another great Tip/Tips Have Great Week Dude 🤟

I don’t understand why but I have running water pumps that are in actual water and I’ve got some purified water from it in my workbench but then it has just stopped adding it any idea why?
Water can be shared between settlements and they can disappear because of that. Also, when their are too many items in a workshop, items with the highest amounts also tend to be reduced a bit. It's something I have noticed in my playthroughs.
Eventually you hit a cap and no more water will be added. I suggest you build a container near your workshop and place water in that container freeing space for more generated water to be added. My current farm generates 570 water at a time. So I take that and add it to a nearby suitcase. I return from exploring to be greeted by another 570 in the workshop and add that to the suitcase. Also your followers have unlimited carrying capacity if they take items from a container. I think if the container has only one type of item or maybe overall (i forget 😅) but it works in this case. Add lets say 10,000 water to a suit case then tell any follower in this case dogmeat to inspect the case. He'll be able to carry all of it to a vender.

If you want to build the land based purifiers where there isn't dirt, use a garden plot. Looking at you Hangman's alley.
