  • Bell 206 Helicopter Crash in the Woods and the Remarkable Recovery
In the heart of a dense woodland, a routine flight turned into a harrowing tale of survival when a Bell 206 helicopter experienced engine failure, leading to a crash that left the aircraft entangled in the unforgiving foliage. The pilot, recognizing the severity of the situation, swiftly initiated emergency procedures and executed an autorotation descent, attempting to minimize the impact.
Despite the pilot's skillful handling, the helicopter crashed in the dense forest. The impact left the aircraft partially obscured by trees and vegetation, its rotor blades destroyed , and the cabin showing signs of deformation. The pilot's quick thinking and subsequent rescue efforts by police aviators played crucial roles in turning a potential tragedy into a story of resilience and triumph.
    The Incident:
As the Bell 206 helicopter, a workhorse known for its versatility, navigated over wooded terrain, it suddenly faced a catastrophic engine failure. In this instance, an investigation revealed that a critical component within the engine experienced a failure, leading to a loss of power.
The wooded environment posed its own challenges, limiting the pilots options for a safe landing area.
Immediately after the crash, the un-injured pilot prioritized safety and initiated a series of survival actions. The first step involved securing communication devices to call for help. With a distress signal transmitted, the pilot focused on ensuring personal safety since it was late in the day and getting dark.
The pilot assessed the surrounding environment for potential hazards and realized it would be extremely difficult for rescue personnel to reach the crash site, not wanting to wait out the night he decided to leave the crash area to find a road.
    Rescue Operation:
News of the crash reached the authorities, prompting a swift response for a search and rescue mission. A Bell 206 helicopter was dispatched for the operation. The Bell 206, equipped for various missions including search and rescue, swiftly reached the crash site and found the pilot waiting at a nearby road.
    Wreck Removal 5 days later:
It would be impossible to remove the wreck from the densely wooded crash site by ground vehicles. There would be only one way possible. A skilled crew were employed to assess the situation and carefully devise a plan for wreck removal. It was determined a helicopter would be required to lift the Bell 206 wreck out of the forest. With precision flying and specialized equipment, a Bell 407 hoisted the damaged Bell 206 into the air for its final flight, clearing the crash site and transporting the wreckage to a secure location for further investigation.
    Conclusion:
This gripping narrative of a Bell 206 helicopter crash in the woods showcases the resilience and preparedness of the pilot in the face of adversity. The successful coordination of emergency procedures, survival actions, and the subsequent wreck removal by the Bell 407 helicopter highlights the critical role that skilled aviators and specialized rescue teams play in ensuring the safety of those involved in aviation incidents.

Indeed. After 20 years in the army doing aviation maintenance, as an aerial observer, scout platoon sergeant and and maintenance inspector, specifically on the OH-58 (Bell 206) and others, it just caught my attention. Kind of like when people call helicopters "Choppers". lol Choppers have two wheels and long front forks. (-: @@Trackup1

That is one seriously impressive longline pick. Talk about threading the needle. And with the ship doing the lift not substantially more powerful than the one being flown out. 407/206. Dang.

I see what you mean. I looked up the description in my firefighting aircraft recognition guide and I read that the Bell 407 is described as "based on the older Bell 206L-3 with some major modifications from older models including the four bladed main rotor system and increased engine performance making it the light helicopter of choice at many bases. The helicopter's increased airspeed, lifting capability and improved density altitude performance makes this helicopter ideal for wildland initial fire attack". I have some experience working on wildlife management projects in the Eastern Sierra out of the 206B back in the 70's and 80's. I have fond memories of the ship serving as a very capable machine for our uses at the time in sling-loading out captured Desert Bighorn Sheep for relocation to their new habitat.@@michaelcohen904

I don't think I would have relied on the main mast s a good point to hook too. It was moving round like it was broke. I Might have gone around the MGB frame, or at lest something that wasn't moving around when you wiggled it!!

What do you think the mast does??? The rotor is attached to the mast which holds the aircraft in the air! The mast is the beefiest stongest component on the entire aircraft! So why would you be afraid to attatch the long line to the mast???? Like saying I don't think I would jack up your car by the axle! Duh! 😜😝😁🤭

    • @JestRR
      @JestRR 7 місяців тому

@@joncox9719 I know that the mass is the single most strongest point, but what the mass is attached to was not the strongest point after the crash. You saw it move when he started lifting it. The mass shouldn’t be moving like it did.
If I was in charge of the lift, once I saw that movement, I would have called it off.
It could have fell on its way to where ever they were dropping it off to.

Wikipedia states the Max Hook Weight of a 407 as 2646 pounds and the empty weight of a 206 as 2331 pounds. It looks like the engine on the 206 has been removed. Look at all of that, I can see where a 407 is more than capable of lifting the 206 in those conditions. Still an interesting choice for the lift, though.
