  • This is the second half of dovetailing this huge case by hand, which yielded predictably hand-cut results, which is fine, except when it isn't, in which case I show you how to fix it.

I've been a carpenter/woodworker for 47 years now. I still love what I do. And I still make a lot mistakes. What makes us the craftsmen we are, to me, is the ability to ingeniously hide and correct mistakes without anyone knowing. And when a paycheck and reputation are involved............ we want to deliver our best...........I appreciate the hand made human aspect of your work. And have complete respect for it. thanks.

Great content in these two videos on Big Case Hand Dovetails! I really appreciate that you take the time to go over solutions to challenges that you find along the way. Each project is different and discovering ways to overcome these challenges is key to a successful project.
Using a trim router with a pattern routing bit to pare directly to the baseline works great! Remove waste with the coping or fret saw and use the router to remove the final 1/8" or so. Clamp a board overhanging the board the router rides on as a stop for setting the height of the pin board in the Moxon vise. Use a test board with the same baseline to set and test the depth of the router bit. Mike Pekovich demonstrates this technique in Fine Woodworking mag.
    Cheers, Gary

I made myself a dedicated dovetailing bench. I built it 28 inches wide and 48 inches long. I've got 4 Moxon vices on it the length of each side, dog holes n the top, and supports that fit in the dog holes with brackets I can raise up and down to hold the long and wide panels. I've got 4 panels in the bench vices right now for a reproduction Penn chest of drawers joined with dovetails I'm building. Your videos are 1st class, especially for beginners getting into hand tools. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks R.C.! As always, there is so much I learn from your videos and experience. It is looking great! By the way, that white lead mechanical pencil from Dritz Fons & Porter looks awesome for dark woods. Just ordered one. Don’t know if I missed it, but would have learned also a lot from you showing how to make the dadoes (or joint used) for the shelves.

I love your honesty when it comes to issues that we all face. The cupping tail board fix and filling gaps was incredibly helpful, and reassuring. Thank you for all the great content.

You take a tremendous number of strokes to saw each of the dovetails...how many tpi is that saw?

I don't recall, but like I said in the video, the saw isn't designed for stock anywhere near this thick. It's the only dovetail saw I have though, so I just deal with it. It could probably stand to be sharpened as well.

I really like the desk lamp setup with the lamp bushing for dogholes. I checked my cheapo desk lamp, but it doesn't seem to have the 1/2" diameter post to work with the Lee Valley lamp bushing. Plus, the post is so flimsy I feel like it needs a set screw to stay in place. Do you happen to know where you got your lamp or who makes one that fits the adapter? I'm trying to look online for a compatible lamp, but (gasp) that diameter doesn't seem to be one of the commonly listed specs. Would happily click an affiliate link.

In my experience the ones most likely to fit the lamp bushing are the ones that have a clamp and post design like this one: amzn.to/3HFIn3V I also prefer the ones with a standard socket so I can put whatever bulb I prefer in it. As always, it's good to shop somewhere that makes returns easy just in case it doesn't fit, but I'll probably order this one myself and try it out.

Also, these cheap desk lamps are just that, and don't always hold their positioning every well with the plastic knobs provided. Be prepared to swap the plastic knobs out for metal ones, or try your luck with the exceedingly rare higher end versions.
