no, the tape is anchored at the bottom, he carries the tape high on the stick till he gets to the mark, the tape puller at the ring is getting the bends out of the tape and beginning to pull it tight, then marker releases his end so tape puller can get a straight tight measurement. its commonly done that way

@@BigSkyCurmudgeon I saw it later with him holding it up upon better review. We use a thinner, shorter stick with a washer type attachment for the tape that slid down easy. Looking back at this, the crew looked top flight. 3 guys marking at a HS event is impressive. I guess they don't want to miss one of her throws. She's fantastic.

@@lesmoore3638 illinois state championships has 4 officials at the ring, and usually 8 or more officials-certified- working the field. montana state serieswill have 4 and 4-6 in the field.

@@BigSkyCurmudgeon State Championships should be. Here in NY there is a shortage. I watched a dual meet the other day. One official (starter). Eighty years old with a walker. The discus was being marked by an 8th grader. Many officials are older and many have little, if any, track background. They are in it for $100 they can make in a 3 hour dual meet. Invitational are a different story. Can go 7 hrs for a little over $100. You learn, very quickly, who's good/cares.

@@lesmoore3638 agree completely. the lack of official recruitment is a plague that infests every sport across the nation. whenever the verbal and sometimes physical abuse of officials become too much the young official decides that putrid sum of "pay" is not worth it the trouble. so a sport is stuck depending on old tired seen it all umps, referees and officials.
