Fromsoft actually start each game by making a highly detailed and realistic foot sniffing simulator, then add the combat elements later in development. The final step is incrementally reducing the amount of foot content until they meet their minimum performance requirements.
It's an unusual approach to software design, but you can't deny the results.
Can't be real. Tarantino isn't part of FromSoft.
That's why they call themselves that. When they smell feet, they go Fromsoft to Hard
@@KainYusanagiHe works on contract. Highly in demand foot freelancer.
They actually start by taking a dictionary and checking how many verbs they can end with "-th", and then throw a dart at a map of Africa so they can have the next lore character's name for weapon descriptions and their bosses "forgive me" lines.
Saw ctf_2fort, imidiate click
I want to add a 3 million polygon sphere to my game that just sits in the game's files doing nothing.
You have been promoted to Lead Developer and two people are working over three days on it already.
I mean... Why not? It's gonna weight a megabyte or two, and if it isn't used, it's not gonna impact performance.
@@band_tsiferkiyou see, it wont be a couple megabytes, it will be at least more than 5 gigs. Normal models weigh megabytes.
nice try Yanderedev
do a billion, continously make it shift shape and move a gazillion kilometers underneath the map's floor and render it at all times, then we have a deal
the tf2 coconut cow stuff drives me nuts in a way i can’t quite describe. honestly tf2’s “spaghetti” code ain’t even half bad for a game of that scope. i guess it’s just the weird redditor fashion people will rush to comment “the 2fort cow strikes again” when their game buckles under the weight of their 6 tb gamebanana custom folder
People find it funny
Yeah it seems like most people forget that RESEARCH is a thing you can do... When i see someone asking things and spreading stupid stuff on social media instead of simply doing a SECOND worth of research it drives me mad
Hot do you know what the TF2 code looks like?

Asking chatgpt for anything is like going to a blackout drunk guy and expecting him to solve math problems for you
I had a guy come in to my tech shop saying Chat GPT said he could put a 10w40 oil in his sports car, and that he just needed to provide a specific coupon code to get it free through us even. ChatGPT said so, so it must be true, AI can't be misinformed or lie now can it?
For the record, 10w40 is used in motorbikes, not cars. His car also wouldn't accept a similar weight, since it would overpressure his crankcase and bust gaskets. Like trying to drink a DQ Blizzard thru a coffee stirstick straw.
And there were no coupons for free oil changes, our franchise barely has a 20% off coupon you can get thru a How's My Driving survey.
and he's also lobotomized
shut up
And he gets it right
The best part about the whole TF2 coconut.jpg thing is the fact that TF2 doesn't even use JPEG or any other common image format; It uses a custom-built format made for the engine the game runs on, the Valve Texture Format, or VTF for short.
I wonder what the point of them making a whole knew format would be. As a fairly tech illiterate person, all the image file types kinda seem the same to me except png allows transparency.
@@GlupSloppo the VTF format also includes the lower-res versions of the texture (aka mipmaps; used for when the model it's on is far away and loading a high-res image is not necessary), as well as some extra information like how reflective the surface should be
@@GlupSloppo VTF is an "all in one" format that can be used to make images behave like png, jpg, gif, or any other format. That's probably why valve uses it, it can do everything and they only have to worry about 1 file type for their game textures.
@@GlupSloppo Oh and image file type tldr: jpg and mp4 use less space but smear pixel art, png and gif keep pixels clean but use more space.
@@GlupSloppo Different priorities; file size/data integrity/encoding speed/decoding speed/streaming ability/etc etc. Think of it like knives and blades. You can use a butchering knife to cut carrots but there's probably a better tool to use for that.
You don't even need that much ass geometry anyway. As someone who makes that type of content, asses aren't exactly any more dense in topology than other areas, you don't need that much even for good physics
Gotta get that nice smooth curvature on closeups though.
@@mechadekayou do that with shaders and normal maps I’d assume, you really don’t need very high poly count for smoothness
Sorry what?
I mean if it pays well its cool but huh?
I guess most of it comes from the texture to give the illusion of something smoother
asses really are only a couple hundred verts, you do have a subdiv at the end of the render but asses really don't go over at most 1k vertices. It stops being smoother very fast so there is just no need for insane amount of vertices
The worst part about being a 3D artist is that youre so overworked and tired, you cant even be bothered correcting morons who pull random bullshit out of their ass, so the misinformation is never countered lmao
You just get shouted down for "being rude" anyway. If you phrase it politely it will be ignored. People just want to listen to whatever the most entertaining narrative is, they don't want factual information.
The worst part about being a 3D artist is that they are so overworked and tired, they cant even be bothered correcting their own mistakes
I tried subdividing meshes and sending screenshots to game companies like in your last video and it actually got me a job!

What I wanna see is cursed UV maps. I'm willing to bet every game has at least one extremely cursed UV map that is wider than the sahara desert because the devs were like fuck it
lethal company's are insane, would recommend looking at those. the custom skin mod created late last year/earlier this year took a minute cause of how bad the islands were in the textures.

Texel density? Hehe, what for?
I can't comment on how true the resident evil poly count thing is but it would make sense because all that game used was a few animated characters and objects movable in the world, and the rest was collision meshes which can be much simpler than textured ones intending to represent a more exact shape, with prerendered overlays. The GameCube remake did the same and looked amazing for the time in a way that many say still holds up
Yeah, not to mention when people say polygons, they're usually talking about rendered polygons and not collision boxes, so if we use that definition, resident evil 1 has very few polygons. Basically just characters, weapons, and enemies.
The RE Remake and RE0 still looks amazing even now.

"I don't spread misinformation I just lie"
The coconut myth is interesting to me personally because even if it's not true it makes a convenient mascot for those totally inexplicable bugs that sometimes happen when you're doing low-level programming that you just can't seem to figure out no matter what. There's regular bugs, there's Schrödinger's bugs, and now we have coconut bugs.
4:30 shounic is joking, and it was meant as a joke, people simply began playing with the joke that the VPK’s cow cutout was the most important tf2 file, because Shounic was unable to find what was actually causing the VPK file to be so bloated
Did you know that in Fallout new vegas, you can start the game
@@luukderuijter1332 not the way I play it (I tried installing more than one mod)
@ProperGoblinGames i was spreading misinformation
@@luukderuijter1332 fun fact: if you are spreading incorrect information on purpose then its called disinformation :)
the coconut was a lie...😢
0:00 Mr.Information won't like the sound of that
Really? I heard he’s into that
You know, when I found out that the coconut was an urban legend it made me want to learn coding just to intentionally include a vitally important picture of a coconut, and obscurely include various operations on and with the exact data of the coconut so that you can't tell what they all do and if you change or remove any of the code related to the coconut the entire program breaks.
your editing style makes me laugh so hard man keep it up
Knowing internet artists, I wouldn't be surprised if some fanmade 2B and Lady Dimitrescu models actually did have that many polygons.
Or that Half-life 2 Cinema and the anatomically correct Alyx? (even though that was less a case of him modeling all that himself and more stealing a model that was supposed to be used in..... animation)
As someone working in video games, there is more urban legend out there than information on what happens in the game's industry.
Even people that do "breaking news" like Jason Schreier often get incomplete pictures of straight wrong info in their stuff (granted, Jason is the best in the business so he's usually trust worthy when it comes to his reporting)
Michael Patcher was a legend at this. His bread and butter was the financial side so while a lot of what he said was based on good fundamentals, just looking at inputs and outputs can give the absolute worst picture of what is going on inside gaming companies.
I mean Shounic was probably joking about the cow thing, not actually trying to make a point that people should believe.
@@orionbarnes1733 nuh uh
its because there are other vital files inside that archive file with the cow model
I watched a good 3 minutes of the video where there was a duplicate tab playing at a 2 second delay i thought it was a really drawn out joke
that’s so funny, i wish i had experienced that
For a real example of the coconut cow thing, there's a mushroom object in Mario Galaxy that, if removed, causes the game to refuse to run. It will always crash if it's not there.
I am a developer and that is simply how code works if you specifically don't write in "graceful" error handling.
It is way, way, way, way more common than you think.
this will crash
loadMushroom();
this will not
try {
loadMushroom();
}
catch(Error error) {
sendErrorReport(error);

I don't get why you say that Shounic "debunked" the cow prop thingy. I watched the video, and he only ever mentions it just to say "It's in this file that if we delete, the game won't run anymore, so let's just say it's the cow for lols"
Nowhere else in the video does he talk about it.
mr spread misinformation channel .
@mendyshelios0451 Fair point lol
Never, under any circumstances, state that the fake model itself is from the game in question.
That way, if you’re called out, you can still get away with “Oh, well I was talking about a fan-made/edited model, I thought that was pretty obvious, but still, sorry for the confusion :)” with at least *SOME* Credibility.
You're my new favourite gamedev youtuber man, i love your perspective on this stuff

Glad to be rid of whatever Windows bloatware I can
4:50 wait, is that Markiplier on the left, in the white shirt?
Yep, Markiplier and Game grumps
i`ve once got a nightmare of when i was mapping in hammer, wacky old ass source map-making app, and every time i got distracted by overly decorating one single place at the meanwile when the layout was unclear, the game became haunted. I sadly don`t remember exactly since it happened a while ago, but i think there were like jumpscares of some sort but i didn`t act that scared or like fps falling even though its a mapmaking app and so on. And then somehow i realised that there was a demon in my hammer, but been perfectly fine with it. Weird, just like all dreams are.
Ok
@Pobiin what is a point of this comment reply, if you hadn't had more to say than just "ok", perhaps you shouldn't have

I love that pretty much all of your videos have Metal Arms footage in them
metal arms is fucking peak im glad someone else knows about this game
Metal Gear / Kojima's Track record have lots of definitely true urban legends to delve into >:)

Ah, Metal Arms peak game, I have yet to see a game feature a similar mechanic like the control tether, my fav level was the one where you play as Krunk and the one that was also on the demo disc where in the middle portion of the level you get a level up for your control tether and use an Ultra Titan to kill everything
the thumbnail was good
i thought that was 'Fully Modeled' in the thumbnail
Your videos are real good
Your commentary is A+
Metal Arms jumpscare, was definitely not expecting to see it here
You would be absolutely flabbergasted to learn the kind of things that were gonna be in that game & a lot of the comments in stuff are insane, some of them are so weird they'd rank these kind of "game development urban legends" as the mere tip of the iceberg from how absurd they are. Some of them might get my comment hidden if I explained them.

The fact I saw that thumbnail and not only knew it was supposed to be 2b but also fake not because I've seen the post or know much about 3d modeling only goes to show how obsessed with drakengard i am.
Yoko taro told the model maker to make it "perfect" or clear out his desk. That's too plump. -I'm like 90% sure her hip bones are more defined in game.-
0:59 that line is actually sick

dude jokes aside it seems so simple but it truly sets you apart that you actually use the video you have to convey the other half of the jokes instead of using it as visual aid on top of some over-the-top hyper-expressive youtuber voice where every single reference is on the script. it lets you keep videos short whilst having it so compact that I can comment this just a minute in.
A video as a million words, we need more youtubers to realise videos are visual!
I feel like I'm losing my mind
I too ERP as a competent game developer
I love more polygon man in video game characters man
But not on the platforms platform is just simple mostly effects of characters from RPG franchise you know high budget franchises like resident evil Mario crash bandicoot, and sonic Minecraft Steve just another one I know Minecraft isn’t really much of a platform, but it has some junk just simple, a simple sandbox game

5:58 Actually I do recall hearing some legit errors, usually ones that lead to speedrun tech.
Like Pac Man with Pinky's target being off to the side if you go upwards.
I know there was something wack in pokemon but I forget what.
And there's this issue with Mario 64's AI pathing because when a creature is supposed to turn around the values it uses are backwards. Meaning in some situations it keeps just walking the wrong way until it gets stuck.
Countless examples of real devs making kind of obvious mistakes.
Tearfully placing my palm on my forehead as I realize this one has been traveling the dark path for some time. Where did it go wrong?
