When you hear the riders talking about the ‘sensations’, this is what they mean. You have to become so intuitively knowledgable about your own physiology to be doing these superhuman things

Great review of the Interview guys, enjoyed listening to your chat on this :) I wonder how Lance or similar rider from that era would compare to Tadej or a few of todays riders.. Pete

Lance was great for his time but would be nowhere close to the top riders today. In this year's tour he would probably be around Derek Gee's level at the peak of his career. Tadej beat Lance's best Plateau De Bellie time on stage 15 by around 5 minutes this year

The fact that he had always relied more on heart rate than power meter in his training is one of the key takeaways here. Heart rate can often tell you more than looking too much at power. Another is that he do other exercises like weightlifting and cross-country skiing. And also running. My ftp rose when I started doing a run every week. It also jumped even more when I started weightlifting with leg exercises two days a week. Yoga made me able to ride more aero and be more comfortable and have better posture and balance on the bike. Many amateurs make the assumption that riding more and harder is the only way to get faster and improve, but it’s not. Often it can be counterproductive and only make you burn out.

No sorry heart rate is not a reliable measure alone. There are 3 variables that most endurance experts use TOGETHER to assess performance in training and racing
      1. Power
      2. Heart rate
      3. Perceived effort

Umm. I like how you eventually phrased this. Power is a more reliable measure than speed for sure, and power is good for assessing the effectiveness of programme. However, power does not help much in assessing the real time difficulty of a workout because it needs to be measured against a dynamic capacity. This is what the world is waking up to. Workouts written and conducted by power and zones derived from FTP tests just aren’t proving to be as effective as they could be. Heart rate, its rate of change and variability are again, proving their usefulness.

Sugar doesn't cause T2DM. Weight gain causes T2DM. You can consume as much sugar as you spend.

It's important to remember the relationship of KJ and Kcal. Most of us won't need 120g because we won't put out the same amount of KJ/h. That's good for us and because we won't need to eat that much.

    • @82vitt

More precisely from prolonged energy overload and as a consequence insulin resistance which can and is caused by overeating on dietary fat in junk food more than from the sugar, which is often overlooked. Weight gain alone could mean gaining lean mass from workout hypertrophy too.

TJ?😂 Max heart rate is individual property and mostly irrelevant. Anything above 200 suggests smaller heart size. What matters is how much time does it take to get back to stable state - better fitness metric than HRV.

The indoor trainer industry is a scam , and far too many club level cyclists nowadays have got into the habit of training indoors when they could've went out on the road/off-road/gravel whatever for the same time.

It’s far from a scam. I’d say it’s almost becoming a separate industry. The gamification of exercise is still booming. We have customers that would never consider riding a bike outdoors and only use Zwift.
